Welcome
W
hen you arrive at The Oaks, you will find two first class golf courses set in the heart of the Surrey countryside and you will be assured of the warmest of welcomes and some superb play.
4 • The Oaks Golf Club
The Oaks Golf Club in Carshalton is a family owned 27 hole public golf facility with a floodlit covered range and clubhouse with restaurant and function suites. It is open to the public every day and although it does have a membership, it prides itself on offering everyone a warm and friendly welcome without all the stuffy rules that golf courses often have.
The Oaks is a public golf facility located in Surrey which boasts two courses, a full 18 hole course and a tricky 9 hole short course. Both courses welcome players of all abilities and ages. Set in the middle of commuter land with ease of access but far away from commuter stress with its wide sweeping greens and tranquil ambience. The golf courses are blessed with being built on some of the best free draining land allowing play to continue uninterrupted all year round with spectacular views over London from many holes.
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
The 18 hole is a par 70 parkland course with many distinguishing features. The course is set up to provide a fair test of golf but still maintains a challenge for the advanced player. In the summer months the mature parkland surroundings and superb views over London provide excellent scenery. Throughout the winter months the course offers a reliable golfing experience as the drainage is second to none meaning the fairways stay dry and players very rarely have to resort to temporary greens.
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
The 9 hole is an excellent facility for people learning the game or for golfers who just fancy a leisurely 9 holes. Practice always makes perfect so you can come and improve your golf at the excellent 16 bay driving range which is covered and floodlit so even on those long dark winter evenings you can come down and enjoy practicing. 13 of the bays have astro-turf type mats with power tees and there are short and long game net targets to really hone your skills and enable you to have a bit of fun whilst you develop your game.
This fantastic practice facility is open to the public and enables you to work on your skills and really sharpen up your swing! One happy reviewer writes “I have just used the driving range and it’s great. Location is nice and beautiful, people very friendly and prices reasonable. There is plenty of parking outside and I think it offers a great setting for a family outing”. Source: Trip Advisor Visited February 2016 There is also a large putting green outside the clubhouse which is open to everybody.

History
T
he Oaks was one of the great sporting country houses of 18th century England. At 33.57 Hectares Oaks Park is a mixture of landscapes, including formal horticulture, natural chalk meadows, woodlands and informal parkland. There are a number of interesting walks based in Oaks Park and some of those pass through the park walls.
6 • The Oaks Golf Club
The main club house was rebuilt completely in 2007 and offers a formal restaurant together with first-class conference and banqueting facilities. The Oaks is proud to say that we are fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. We also have a friendly cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating.
Set on free-draining chalk downland, the centre is encircled by superb trees including oaks, silver birch and beech and is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife. It adjoins the famous “Oaks Park” and still boasts some of the finest oak trees in the county.
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
The 18 Hole Horley Course
The 9 Hole Acorn Course
Opened in 1975 the 18 hole course is the best draining that you will ever find built as it is on chalk and high ground allowing the course to remain open and playable even after the wettest weather that the British climate can throw at us. The parkland layout is easy walking and challenging although there are holes where an errant drive can end up on the fairway, it may not be your fairway, but it is someone’s fairway.
Initially a pitch and putt this was extended in 1982 into a longer par 3 course where the longest hole is 230 yards. This is a perfect course for people to begin their golfing career and it is maintained to the same standard as the 18 hole course. There are no bunkers on the course, deliberately to ensure that everyone is able to have fun playing it, the main difficulty is the undulating terrain meaning that you will hardly ever have a level lie to play from.
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
Over the years many thousands of people have started playing golf on the 9 hole Acorn course at The Oaks and many have even gone on to become golf professionals. The centre is named after “The Oaks” – the original manor house which was built on the property and also gave its name to the horse race run annually at nearby Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Starting with a short hole is often tricky, particularly when judging the distance is difficult. This hole plays slightly uphill, so take one more club than you think. The green is massive from left to right with a distinct tier so you can be over 100 feet away from the hole but putting.
Out of bounds all the way up the left is not the only issue on this tough par 4. A tree about 70 yards short of the green can block you out if you have boomed the driver, but if you go safe with the smaller woods it will leave you a long second shot to an elevated green that is difficult to make yourself hit enough club to.
Playing downhill and usually wind behind, this par 3 seems easier than the first, but the trees cut in from the left considerably so if you want to start your ball left and fade it in you will be in trouble. Landing short is made easy as there are no hazards before the green, but the ball will kick right and can take a very firm bounce through the green.

Long par 4, usually into the wind, so only the longer hitter can contemplate reaching in 2. A row of bushes are where a shortish drive will land so might be worth going for the big hit, plenty of room right, but out of bounds left. Just one bunker to protect the green on the left, but if you are long you will be lost.
The best shot into the green comes from the right hand side of the fairway, but the trees up the right could ruin that plan if you go too far that way. Perfect hole if you fade the ball, start it at the trees on the left and let it peel away into the fairway and do the same with the approach shot for a soft landing on a green facing you.
Time to open the shoulders, tons of room here on this short downhill par 4 which in summer with the big hitters is reachable. One small bunker to the right may spoil your fun, but if you don’t come of this hole with a smile on your face it is your own fault.
10 • The Oaks Golf Club

Now you could do with one leg shorter than the other. Long par 5 with out of bounds down the right, but you should be aiming so far left to allow for the camber of the fairway this should not enter your thoughts. It is the approach to the green that may tax you more. A bunker short and right draws golf balls to it so I would suggest play short in 2 and then leave yourself a short iron into a large green and take your chance with your putter. If you fly this green you are out of bounds so make that last shot as easy as possible as it will be from a hanging lie.
Long par 4 where if you get a draw on your drive with the correct line, you can have a short into the tiny green. If you fade to the right, trees await and so does a really long club for your second shot, no disgrace in dropping a shot on this hole, there are others later you get it back on.
Close out the front 9 like you started with an uphill par 3. This time the green is thin and like an upturned bowl, making club selection vital. Too short and the ball rolls back towards you, too long and you are in the trees and out of the hole.

12
Like hole 6, this par 4 is definitely in reach from the tee, but you will have to be brave as it is out of bounds just over the back and although if you get the line right the camber of the fairway will throw the ball in towards the green, if you get it wrong, there are trees and bushes either side to spoil your fun.
Blind driving hole with out of bounds up the right, so needs to be treated with respect. If you are safe with your driver, it is worth a go as the second shot will be quite short to a green guarded by mounding. If you stray left, some trees will block your path to the green and you will end up punching the ball below the branches, thus negating the advantage of taking the driver, so up to you to decide, you should know by now how your driver is performing.
Signature hole. Beautiful looking par 3 over a valley to a green protected in all 4 corners by bunkers. The green is another upturned bowl and a vicious slope from front to back, so even when you arrive safely on the putting surface your job is far from done. From the front tees this is a challenging, pretty hole, from the back tees, particularly if the wind is blowing, it is a monster, enjoy it.
12 • The Oaks Golf Club
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
13
14
Unless you love your driver, this is a hole to let it have a break. The out of bounds on the right is clearly in sight as are the trees on the left although a medium length drive will get past them. To add to the difficult decision, there are 2 very tall trees right in the middle of the fairway where a well hit small wood or long iron would land. So that could deflect the ball or mean that you are blocked for your second shot to a fairly large flat green -whoever said this game was supposed to be fair .
Again you have the out of bounds up the right, although you have more room this time. The row of trees down the left are nothing more than annoying, but do grab the attention. So it might be best to play a small wood from the tee as this par 5 is out of range in 2 shots, so lay up is the best choice. But when you get near the green this hole comes into it’s own. There is a small copse of very tall trees 50 yards from the green. So if you play your second shot to the right you will have to take these on with your wedge into the green. The sensible approach
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
is to play down the left of the fairway so the trees don’t come into your third shot reckoning, but the designer has thought of that and placed a couple of tasty bunkers there for you to avoid. So precision placement required. 15 If you miss this mid range par 3 hole to the right you are in a mess. The recovery shot will probably be made harder by the trees over there as well as the hill you will have to come over. Come in from the left and you can if you wish land it short and let the slope of the ground take the ball towards the hole.

Loads of room up the right hand side, the trees on the left shouldn’t trouble you here. The tough bit is the approach shot as the green is guarded by bunkers front left and front right that are treacherous. You need to fly the ball all the way onto the putting surface so try to get as big a drive down here as you can to make the club you use more lofted thus allowing you more spin to stop the ball on what is a fairly generous size green. Not sure that the stroke index on this hole is quite right, take advantage.
Blind drive to a fairway that slopes right to left. Try to keep the ball as far up the right as you dare to make the next shot easier as the lie will be flatter, but if you stray too far right, there is disaster waiting. The biggest hitters will fancy going for the green in 2 and so they should, but you will need a career shot to accomplish that. The bunkers to the right stop you rolling in from that side and the deep bunker front left is where everything gathers to, so advice is play your second to the top of the hill and wedge it onto the green, too much danger left.
Banks to the left and right will help toss a slightly wayward drive back into play, but a wild drive will be out of bounds. The green is very narrow and a yard over the back will be out of bounds so there is no way that you can take life easy on this final challenge. You need to come in from the right hand side of the fairway to give you the simpler approach shot, but you better get the club selection right or you could be reloading up the last, not a good way to end your day.

You can then make your way to the 19th hole for some well earned refreshment!

T
o help make golf more affordable and accessible for everyone, at The Oaks we offer free beginners group classes taken by the UK’s leading exponent of teaching beginners, Jon Woodroffe. The classes run for 4 consecutive weeks and cover the basics of the game. In the words of our Director of Golf, Jon Woodroffe
www.theoaksgolf.co.uk
“In my 35 years experience of coaching golf it is always the same things that stop people hitting the golf ball well and straight, the grip and the posture. So with the 4 free beginners group classes I will make sure that the new or returning golfers that come along will be put on the right path with these basics and thus will improve and be better golfers than they have ever been. Swinging a golf club is the easy bit, holding the club and standing correctly is so much harder but I will make sure they have those skills by the end of the 4 week course of lessons”
There is no catch to the free beginners group lessons, the only cost is for the range balls that you need for the lesson, but that is the same price as if you came to the range on your own to practice, so the lessons are really free and you are in the hands of the most experienced golf professional in the UK, Jon Woodroffe, Advanced Fellow of the PGA.

The free beginners group classes are also a great fun way to learn with other new golfers that are suffering the same problems as you are and there is of course the chance that you will hook up with the other people on your class as playing partners for the future. Golf is a very sociable game and this is a very sociable way to learn it. For the dates of the next set of lessons either call the golf club on 020 8643 8363 or email Jon Woodroffe directly on woodroffe17@btinternet.com

Lessons To make a step change in your golf game the quickest way is to book some private golf lessons with our team of PGA qualified professionals. Whether it is to stop that pesky slice off the tee or sharpen up your short game skills, the best way is to have a PGA qualified, dedicated, experienced professional look at what you are doing and offer solutions to your problems. The lessons can be arranged almost all the hours that the golf range is open 7 days a week and we
only charge for the professional’s time, so if there are 2 or 3 of you then it is fine to share the lesson and divide the cost. It is also a very sociable way to learn. Gift vouchers are available for lessons if you are not sure what to get the avid golfer in your life.
