gbourne Downs Golf Club is located just north of Marlborough, 3 miles from junction 15 of the M4, it is one of the finest down land golf courses in Wiltshire.

It’s fast draining, always open with never a temporary tee or green and boasts fabulous views. Designed by five time Open Championship winner J.H. Taylor, the holes are set amidst 200 acres of glorious down land terrain which make for a fantastic game of golf.

• THE COURSE •

he overall layout of this Wiltshire golf course is in two nines that both start and finish by the clubhouse. The first seven holes on the front nine at Ogbourne gently wind uphill to reach the high-point of the course before you turn to come back towards the Clubhouse. Pause and take some time on the eighth tee to enjoy spectacular views across the downs towards Marlborough then turn your attention to the tough par three followed by a fabulous par five down the hill all the way to the clubhouse.

The back nine is generally regarded as the tougher nine at Ogbourne; it starts with a long par five. You move uphill through eleven and twelve until you come to Ogbourne Downs’ very own ‘amen corner’ one of the toughest stretches of golf in Wiltshire. The long Par 4, Stroke Index 1, thirteenth is the first of this trio. This is followed by Ogbourne Downs’ signature hole, the Par 5, Stroke Index 3, fourteenth plays down the long valley then you play a Par 3 across the valley that’s over 200 yards and carry most of the way. Sixteen plays across the downs to bring you to the short downhill Par 3 seventeenth then it’s back down to the Clubhouse for a tough Par 4 finish.

• THE COURSE •

For golfers looking to play golf in Wiltshire, come to Ogbourne Downs Golf Club on the edge of the Marlborough Downs near the village of Ogbourne St George, just 10 minutes from the centre of Swindon. The course provides a challenge for golfers of every standard. The course is built over fast draining chalk down land which gives rise to tight springy fairways that give you excellent lies although you seldom find a flat one.

The greens are small, firm and fast and generally well bunkered. On most approach shots you don’t get to see the base of the pin so you have to trust your distances. The course is not particularly long; just 6,422 yards with a par of 71 but the course bares its teeth when the wind blows.

➤ Hole 2

Short but challenging par four with gently sloping left to right fairway. Keep drive left hand side of fairway off tee to avoid right hand bunker which is placed strategically to catch a ‘leaked’ drive. Remember second shot is uphill so take one club more than your distance aid tells you. The green is banked on the left hand side and the shrewd golfer will play for the ‘members’ bounce for their second shot into the undulating two tiered green avoiding the steep run away down into the right greenside bunker.

Long playing right to left dog leg. Drive is crucial here and a right to left tee ball will help position you for your uphill second shot. Make sure to club up for this rise up to a raised green which demands a ball flighted all the way to the top of the green to avoid the ‘false front where the ball will run all the way back down. No prizes for being short here.

Short par four, drivable for the big hitters. Be sure to aim high up on right side of fairway as the right to left slope will propel your tee ball down to the left and bring the left hand bunkers into play. Shot into the green can be fed in from the greens right hand bank. Green slopes away from front to back.

Wind a big factor for this challenging par three. Green well-guarded by three bunkers which makes club selection and accuracy crucial. Trust the yardage here there is some distance between the front bunker and the green which tends to foreshorten the hole. Very tricky pitch if green is missed on the right. Play for heart of green regardless of pin postion.

Best to favour left half of fairway with tee ball. Fairway slopes subtly left to right all the way down this long par four including the front apron of the green. Missing the green on the right side can cause problems with a difficult chip up the bank so keep left down this hole. An approach shot landing short will naturally feed in from the left onto this narrow green.

Short par four gently uphill all the way. Fairway cross bunker can catch a drive very easily so make sure to play smart from tee and stay short… or the long hitter can take it on. Make sure to take enough club for uphill second shot. Green slopes gently from back to front so don’t be afraid to be aggressive with second shot and avoid greenside bunkers short and either side.

Dog leg left to right. Drive is best placed left half of fairway to open up second shot to green. You are now at highest point of the course so take note of wind direction and strength. No prizes for going right anywhere down this hole. The right hand green side bunker protects shots being hit to a hole cut on the right side. Aim for middle of green to be safe. The green slopes gently from right to left. Don’t forget to take in the spectacular views all around.

Long playing par three especially if wind is against. Be sure to take plenty of club. Tee shot crucial to keep down left side of green as the slope kicks dramatically to the right towards the right hand bunker which can prove tricky. Best to take ample club here into this saddle shaped green.

Lovely inviting drive on this super par five. Beautiful view down through the valley towards Marlborough. Try to keep ball left of centre down fairway to avoid the fairway bunkers situated on the right side of the fairway. For big hitters is best to keep your drive on the top of the hill otherwise you will have a tricky downhill stance for your second shot. Approach into green can be dropped short onto apron and gently roll onto the green. Putts tend to roll towards Marlborough.

Super par five with fairway sloping left to right so keep drive left side of fairway, preferably down the tree line away from right hand bunker. Placement of second shot is important so be mindful of left hand bunker and cross bunker. Approach into green crucial with club choice as the green is long and two tiered. Members bounce off the left hand bank isn’t a bad way to enter this green. Remember you are hitting uphill.

Ideally a right to left tee ball required here. Second shot plays very uphill so check wind position and allow for plenty of club. Keep drive right of fairway bunker. Can easily play two clubs more than you think!! Green runs primarily from back to front and is guarded by two greenside bunkers.

A straight short par four. High part of the course so check wind position and strength. Aim at the marker post and a good drive will leave a short iron into the green. Best not to go through the green as potentially can leave a tricky chip back. Green is fairly flat so a good birdie chance here.

Long par four for the men here (par five for ladies). A good drive favouring left side of the fairway aids the long second shot to the green. Narrow entrance to the green so very demanding on accuracy. May be sensible to lay up and chip on for the higher handicapper to avoid the greenside bunkers. Green slopes from back to front so try to leave yourself an uphill putt.

Our long valley hole known as our signature hole. Be sure to admire the beautiful views and wildlife all around. This is a par five so no need to be greedy from the tee. A solid accurate drive will stand you in good stead to make a par here. Your second shot should be aimed right side of fairway and will roll down to the left towards the green. This green is tricky and plays like an upturned saucer. Intelligent play is required here not aggressive.

Long par three, all carry so be sure to take plenty of club to fly across. Aim should be right side of green to allow a kick left. An undulating two tiered green will provide a challenge to two putt.

Dog leg left to right par four. Best not to ‘chew’ off too much of the dog leg unless you can seriously launch a ball a long way. Best to stay left off the tee and play the hole as a par four in which case your second shot won’t be so tough. Remember its uphill though so take an extra club and stay half side of green avoiding right greenside bunker.

Fabulous little par three. Although short this is a challenging little hole especially in high winds and guarded well by five bunkers. Club choice is imperative here plus remember it is downhill. A little punch shot into this green can serve well and give you more ball control.

The perfect aim here is tight to the left tree line. The fairway kicks strongly left to right so the chances are you may end up in the right hand semi. If your second shot in lands short it will kick to the right. Green slopes gently towards the road.

Claire began playing golf at Ogbourne Downs where she enjoyed a glittering amateur career as a junior before going on to represent England & Great Britain obtaining a handicap of plus 4. Claire was leading amateur at the British Open in 1983 and followed up in 1984 with the English & British Amateur Championships, several successes in America and a Curtis Cup place. This resulted in Claire being the Avia Golfer of the Year for 1984 and she was voted

World’s Best Amateur by Golf Digest Magazine. Claire turned Professional in 1985 and from 1986-1992 played on the Women’s European Tour achieving several top 10 finishes. Since 1992 she has been Head Professional at Mentmore Golf & Country Club, Buckinghamshire County Coach, Danish National Coach and continues to write articles for Golf World & Women in Golf Magazines. It’s also an ideal place to work on your game, you are welcome to come and use the driving range even if you’re not playing on the course. Our covered bays give protection in all types of weather with targets at different distances. Our short game area will give you opportunity to work on many aspects of your wedge game, whether its perfecting the trademark Phil Mickelson flop shot or the Scottish pitch and run – all shots that you could potentially face on the course – there’s even a practice bunker.

To finish off, there’s a practice putting green just by the 10th tee. Ogbourne Downs Golf Club offers an extensive fleet of two-seater electric buggies to complement your game of golf.
