Our History

welcome Founded in 1908, Penn Golf Club is a high quality heathland golf course with great character set in the picturesque surroundings of Penn Common, where the city border meets the rural countryside of South Staffordshire.

With views extending over the Clee Hills, visitors find it hard to believe that we are just two miles from Wolverhampton city centre yet conveniently located for easy access to the West Midlands motorway network and Black Country route. Penn Golf Club is renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere both on and off the course.

There is no tee reservation system for members and you will always be invited to ‘fix up’. Regular events such as popular weekday fiddles and lady’s day compliment a busy competition diary. However, if social golf is your preference the rich and unique tradition of Sunday hosted by the Captain makes Penn an extra special place.

Our History Golf Starts in Wolverhampton

The course at Penn Common is arguably the oldest in the Wolverhampton area, dating back to the early 1890â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when a group of distinguished local gentlemen and dignitaries, notably Charles Mander, Neville Mander, W Wentworth Walker, W R Lysaght, Mein Wilkie partner at a Wolverhampton accountancy firm, Thomas Graham and Dr Biggam, founded what was then called The South Staffordshire Golf Club.

By mid-1893 the club had nearly 100 members and a nine-hole course had been laid out. The Barley Mow Inn was used as the first clubhouse and Samuel Jones from Hoylake was the first professional. Dr Biggam was to become the first Captain and Mein Wilkie, partner at a Wolverhampton accountant, the first Honorary Treasurer. T F Waterhouse was the first Honorary Secretary and The Earl of Dartmouth President.

At the turn of the century the club was thriving and had been extended to eighteen holes totalling 4,700 yards. The clubhouse had been extended to a pavilion style although the original Barley Mow Inn was still open to the public. By 1904 the Committee were looking to relocate the club and ultimately secured a plot of land in Danescourt, Tettenhall and in 1908 The South Staffordshie Golf Club relocated there. Some members decided to stay at the old course which became Penn Golf Club.

Famous Characters Two of the most colourful characters ever to grace English golf played their first tentative shots at Penn Golf Club. One was Archie Compston, who rose to be a leading professional and friend and tutor of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII and then Duke of Windsor when he gave up the throne for love of American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The other was from the other extreme of the social spectrum - Charlie Stowe, a Black Country miner who crashed through the class barrier to reach the highest peaks of amateur golf.

In their early days these illustrious golfers needed on occasion to shoo away horses and cattle to play their shots because of local grazing rights on the ancient common. Thankfully, all that became history when members bought the land from the Duke of Sutherland in 1955.

Charlie Stowe was born in a cottage on the common and lived all his life in a little semi near the course, his front parlour rumoured to hold a mountain of splendid silver cups and cut glass, all mementos of his days of glory. He started as an artisan at Penn because he couldn’t afford the fees. But by the time he was 26 he had won Midland championships and in 1935 was summoned from the coal mine to play for England. It was the start of an amateur career that saw him string together a long list of victories for his country. Then in 1938 he was a member of the first GB&I side to beat the Americans in the Walker Cup. He did his part by beating the redoubtable Charles Kocsis. Stowe also came close to winning a major three times, being runner-up in the Amateur (1948) and the English Championship twice (1947 and 1949). His Black Country

humour was legendary. When the England captain suggested he would phone him for a game, Charlie replied: “Telephone? We ay on the bleedin’ gas yet!” Archie Compston (sacked by Kidderminster at 16 for idleness) was one of Britain’s leading pros from 1925 to the early 1930’s and came close to winning the Open, being runner-up in 1925 and 3rd in 1928. But he was best known for his close association with the Prince of Wales, a keen golfer, and also for his incredible 18 up with 17 to play victory in a challenge match against the mighty Walter Hagen. Penn can look back with pride on two outstanding golfers who cut their first divots on the common.

The Course Penn Golf Club is a heathland course with easy walking set in the natural environment of Penn Common with rough, gorse, copses, and water courses predominating the landscape.

Over recent years our highly skilled greens team led by Course Manager Tim Johnson have carefully managed the course with help from Natural England and expert advice from Gordon Irvine. As well as being in excellent condition the course at Penn is as fair a test for golfers of all abilities as anywhere in the Midlands.

From our hand mown and slick, true greens to our lush fairways, we believe that our course is comparable to those of the most prestigious clubs. We have recently hosted an EGU event, and regularly host county competitions including the Staffordshire Amateur Championship.

hole by hole HOLE 1 | Mein Wilkie, 397yds par 4 Dog-leg left with a risk & reward tee shot. Hit driver to clear the fairway bunkers, or a long iron to lay up and leave around 200 yds to the green. Clear the traps and you’re faced with 110yds to a well-protected green with bunkers either side. Go too long and you’re down the slope into the rough. HOLE 2 | Barley Mow, 368yds par 4 Slightly uphill from the tee with large trees right and left. Favour the left side of the fairway to take out the greenside bunker which protects a raised green. Fall short and

you’ll spin off so go up one more club, it’s further than you think.

HOLE 3 | Red Lane, 371yds par 4 Tricky tee shot to a humpback fairway which runs off toward a ditch that snakes the length of the fairway and drains into the Captain’s charity pond in front of the green. Three wood from the tee leaves a mid-iron 2nd to a well-guarded green with swales right and OOB left. HOLE 4 | Bung, 548yds par 5 Dog-leg left par 5 with a semi-blind tee shot.

Find the fairway and a straight second will avoid the rough either side. The approach is a downhill shot from an undulating fairway to a green that slopes away from you.

HOLE 5 | Stowe, 347yds par 4 An uphill dog-leg left that demands an accurate tee shot to avoid bunkers on the left. Too short and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re blocked out, too far and you run out of fairway. The green slopes from back to front so leave yourself an uphill putt.

Another risk and reward hole. Two fairway bunkers make for a narrow landing area 250yds from the tee. Favour the left side as the green is well protected by trees and a bunker to the right. Lay up to set up a shot of some 145 yds to a small green with a severe front slope.

A well-guarded par 3 through the trees. Misjudge the breeze short and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bunkered, long and you have to negotiate a ridge back onto the green.

Negotiate a shrub-filled gully to reach a fairway protected by trees to the right and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on your way. Clear the ditch 100yds from the two-tier green for maximum reward, however beware the bail out on the right as the green slopes away from there toward the greenside bunker.

HOLE 12 | Hades, 400yds par 4 A dog-leg right that rewards a good tee shot. The flat green is protected by a bunker and a deep dell to the right and a peripheral ridge makes any chip and run tricky to judge. A misjudged approach may find the ditch 30yds short of the green.

HOLE 14 | Oasis, 399yds par 4 A wide, gently sloping fairway with trees right and left which rises to a large green. Favour the right side for the clearest shot to the green, however trust the yardage

markers as there’s a false green ahead of the flag and bunker right-side, you’ll need that extra club.

Play a 3 wood for safety or try clearing the ditch that dissects the fairway to leave a short iron to a gently sloping green. Favour the left as tall trees prevent any attempt at the green from the right. A bunker left-side can catch your approach to the green.

A ditch dissects the fairway and could be in range for the biggest of hitters. Favour the left side for the fastest route to the green which is protected by a bunker short right. The green is large and slick so two putts is very rewarding.

Membership Penn Golf Club has a very friendly and active membership of around 500. Our men’s, ladies and junior sections offer a full competition fixture schedule aimed at players of all standards.

Team’s are entered into Scratch Leagues, West Midlands Leagues, ’B’ team Fixtures and Staffordshire Junior League matches as well as friendly games against clubs from all over the Midlands. Our senior section is also very active with a strong seniors fixture list as well as regular club competitions.There are also regular “roll-ups” throughout the week with a warm welcome for new members. The Ladies section is one of the most successful in the area with a full programme

of competitions.There is a full calendar of inter-club fixtures both competitive and friendlies. Ladies competition days are a Tuesday and Sunday. As well as club teams across the range of abilities we also run several friendly events including a full and varied social calendar including Family Fun Week-Ends. We pride ourselves that you need never play a round on your own here at our friendly club. We welcome all membership applications,whether you are being invited

by a current member or if you are joining on your own or part of a group you will feel immediately at ease with our friendly staff and patrons. There is currently no joining fee for any of Penn Golf Club’s fantastic cost effective packages. Seven-Day membership is available for £20 per week for a full paying adult,much less for Junior members and Five Day membership is also available on a Pro-Rata basis. Penn Golf Club is keen to encourage our younger membership and offers a

competitive discounted rate for those joining between the ages of 18-30. We are always keen to promote the future of our great game. The junior section at Penn Golf Club has a full schedule of Staffordshire League matches, a programme of club competitions, a Junior Captain and a Captain’s day event.It is the perfect introduction to a premiere course for those under 18. Packages are available to include 18 or 27 holes with hospitality from breakfast through to dinner depending on your requirements. All packages include a complimentary fourball voucher for your prize table plus 10% discount off your next society package price (if booked on the day). Nearest the pin and Longest Drive competitions can be arranged for any Golf day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the tricky 7th hole being the favourite for nearest the pin with the option of the 4th or 13th for the longest drive.
