Simply A Club Like No Other
A
t the confluence of the rivers Wye and Monnow lies the ancient market and border town of Monmouth surrounded by hills in a region where lowland Britain merges into the highlands of the west.
Four miles west of Monmouth on the B4233 to Abergavenny lies our magnificent championship course. Opened in 1982 and ready to welcome any golfers eager to test themselves against a demanding 6733 yards of parklands, streams and lakes.
Back in 1982 Tony Jacklin asked why The Rolls was being kept a firmly guarded secret. Greg Norman, a one-time touring professional of the course described the four short holes as “fantastic.
The course itself, and the countryside surrounding it, is home to local wildlife and water fowl and combined with the spectacular view of the Black Mountains, makes The Rolls one of the most outstanding golf courses, not just in Wales, but the whole of the UK.

History
T
he Rolls of Monmouth Estate, also known as The Hendre, has been the country seat of the Rolls family since 1767 when John Rolls married Sarah Coysh. The mansion was originally a hunting lodge, but successive generations have enlarged it, adding extra rooms and facilities that reflected their particular concerns and interests. It was John Allen Rolls, an enthusiastic bibliophile, who commissioned the fine cedar library from Sir Aston Webb, the architect who built the facade of Buckingham Palace, Admiralty Arch and other notable parts of the Mall. John Allen Rolls was also an MP, High Sheriff of Monmouthshire and the first Baron Llangattock. One of his remarkable descendants, Charles Stewart Rolls, was the co-founder of the Rolls Royce motor company. Charles had many unusual interests for a young man of his background. During his holidays from Eton he supervised the installation of the first electricity supply to the family home. He read mechanics at Cambridge and bought his first car, a 33/4hp Peugeot whilst on a visit to Paris. Driving home from Cambridge to Monmouth for Christmas took him three days despite achieving a remarkable 12 mph. He arrived at midnight to be greeted by delighted crowds who had never seen a car before.
THE ROLLS OF MONMOUTH | 7
History continued He took part in many races on the continent, including the Paris to Berlin Race of 1901, before setting up a car sales and repair company, CS Rolls of Fulham, in 1902, selling mainly Panhard vehicles. When he met Frederick Royce in 1904, and saw the quality of the car he had built, he immediately suggested joining forces to manufacture their own cars.
8 | THE ROLLS OF MONMOUTH
Charles, however, was not only interested in cars. In fact, from 1906 to 1909, he spent much of his time and energy on the new sport of ballooning, organising frequent races and ballooning parties at the Monmouth estate. In 1908, Charles went to France to meet the Wright Brothers and was thrilled to fly with Wilbur in his latest biplane. Flying immediately became a passion.
He taught himself to fly, firstly in a glider and then in a Wright Brothers biplane, assembled by the Short brothers, ballooning friends, who were destined to build many famous planes, including the Empire and Sunderland flying boats.
Within a month of learning to fly, Charles had won a trophy for being the first Briton to fly a distance of half a mile. Early in 1910 the first pilots’ licences were issued and he received licence number two. In June of that year he became a national hero when he made the first non-stop return flight across the Channel, in a time of 90 minutes. Arriving back to an enthusiastic welcome from a huge crowd at Dover, he was complimented on his
momentous feat. “The plane behaved well,” he said, “I just sat in it”.
Charles and his two brothers all died without children, so the estate passed to the Harding side of the family.
Less than six weeks later he was dead, the first British victim of an aeroplane crash. His plane broke up in mid-air at a flying display at Bournemouth and thousands saw the young hero plunge to his death.

Course Tour
> Hole 1 Deceptively long green, be sure to have a good club selection for your approach shot or you could face a long putt. Keep to the right of the fairway for the best angle in to the green.
> Hole 3 Try and keep your tee shot as tight to the left side or even move the ball right to left if possible. A tee shot too straight or to the right will leave a long approach to the green.
> Hole 2 A good tee shot required here, it’s important to be past or to the right of the oak tree on the left side of the fairway, otherwise you may be blocked out.
> Hole 4 Good club selection is required here. Anything past the hole will leave a fast and tricky putt.
14 | THE ROLLS OF MONMOUTH
> Hole 5 Be positive with your approach shot, anything short will roll back off the front of the green and leave a tough pitch up the green. > Hole 6 Keep your approach to the flag on the right side and below the hole if possible. Anything left or long of the hole will leave you with one of the toughest putts on the course.
> Hole 7 Favour the right side with your tee shot and this should help you get a little extra distance if you catch the slope. > Hole 8 Two tier green, so your club selection is important again. Get it wrong and you will be lucky to two putt. Miss the green left and the toughest bunker shot on the course will await.
> Hole 9 Be careful with your approach shot. Out of bounds is close to the back of the green. You should be happy with a two putt, as it’s very undulating.
> Hole 11 This short par 4 will have the big hitters tempted. However a good tee shot down the middle will leave a simple pitch to the green.
> Hole 10 It’s a must to keep the ball below the hole on your approach. Anything past the pin and you could easily see your first putt roll off the front of the green.
> Hole 12 After a friendly tee shot the hole gets tough. Try to avoid the huge oak trees with your second shot. When hitting to the green be sure to miss the bunkers on either side of the green.
THE ROLLS OF MONMOUTH | 15
16 | THE ROLLS OF MONMOUTH
Course Tour continued > Hole 13 A great par 3, my favourite hole on the course. Easy to say, but try and hit the middle of the green and two putt. Miss the green and it’s a tough pitch or bunker shot no matter where you are. > Hole 14 A smart tee shot would leave 130-150 yards to the green. A tee shot going too far will leave a tricky pitch to an elevated green.
> Hole 15 When hitting your approach to the green try and keep the ball below the hole. Any putt down this green will be lightening fast.
> Hole 17 A testing par 5. Be careful with your approach to the green, however; favour the left side as the natural contours will help the ball find the putting surface.
> Hole 16 The approach shot is most important. A wrong club selection will leave you with a huge putt.
> Hole 18 With a fantastic view of the mansion you are faced with a tough finishing hole. Make sure you have enough club to make the long carry over water and avoid the large green side bunker. Walking off with a par 3 should make you very happy indeed. Now enjoy the 19th.
