FAMILY COLLECTION

I T ’S A F A M I LY T H I N G The iconic PARKHOUSE legacy was born back in 1794, when a Blandford man, Daniel Pegler set up a family jewellery business on England’s south coast. It was combined with other family jewellers in 1925 and 1940, before being acquired by Scotland’s oldest family jeweller, LAING, in 1995. Family is and always has been at the heart of PARKHOUSE. Now in our sixth generation, we have come this far by always putting our customers at the centre of everything we do, adapting over the decades to continually offer a fresh, modern approach that is steeped in history and tradition. Owner Michael Laing obe and his son Richard hand select each and every diamond, while our exclusive Family Collection designs are inspired by the ladies of the Laing family.

A showcase for the world’s leading international jewellery and watch brands such as Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe and Omega, PARKHOUSE is home to the largest collection of luxury timepieces on the south coast. PARKHOUSE Hampshire is also privileged to be the exclusive stockist for Cartier, Chopard and IWC in the area, and home to some of the most sought after luxury jewellery brands: Mikimoto, the finest and most famous of pearl brands, and Italian designer Marco Bicego. It’s not just the surroundings, collections and luxury brands that define PARKHOUSE Hampshire, it’s a combination of the personal touches, attention to detail and highest customer service with in-store experts and fluent Mandarin speakers guaranteeing a five-star experience for all visitors.

Ocean Village Clubhouse

Royal Southampton is exceptional in having two waterside clubhouses. And each is in a stunning but very different location.

Ocean Village Clubhouse at 1 Channel Way, is close to the heart of Southampton yet also gloriously positioned overlooking the Ocean Village marina. The view from the bar and the restaurant impresses everyone as they enter, as does the traditional, imposing décor, and there are few places in the City as pleasant to relax in the Summer with a morning coffee or a sundowner, as on its wraparound balcony. This purpose built premises is the heart of the Club, and is where our staff team is based: The General Manager, Membership Secretary and the Events team are all available on weekdays to answer any queries you may have, and the noticeboards are worth perusing to catch up with what’s happening. Lunch is offered in the restaurant or bar seven days a week, from noon to 2pm (3pm on Sundays) and the restaurant is open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday inclusive, 7 to 9pm. The Club’s chefs pride themselves on the quality of freshly cooked, locally sourced dishes. Menus are varied and weekly speciality nights are also offered. The bar is also open every day from 11am to 3pm and again from 6 to 11pm Tuesday to Friday, and continuously (11am to 11pm) on Saturdays.* In addition to the spacious and flexible bar and restaurant areas the club also boasts a large additional function room on the top floor, the Admirals Room, for events, conferences and meetings and also the Trafalgar Room, an attractive smaller multipurpose room adjacent to the restaurant. *There may be occasional variation of these opening times.

Gins Clubhouse Untitled map UntitledBeaulieu layer Gins – on the River

Our second clubhouse is wonderfully located in the heart of the New Forest. It is accessed by a private road leading from St Leonards, and overlooks a wide reach of the unspoilt Beaulieu River, with its varied plant and birdlife, on the protected Beaulieu Estate. Our Members are uniquely fortunate to have access to the Club facilities in this outstandingly beautiful area, including our recently extended, shore pontoon, a river pontoon and Club moorings supported by a Bosun service, dinghies and kayaks for Members’ use – and even specially trained crabs to delight the children! All this plus a clubhouse with commanding views over the river and cuisine of the same high standard as its sister clubhouse at Ocean Village. The Sunday Carvery is particularly popular – make sure to book! Opening hours vary according to season – The bar and restaurant are open Weds to Sun in High Season (early April to mid Oct) and Fri to Sun in the Low Season. (The Clubhouse is closed from mid Dec to mid Feb). Lunch is served on all open days and Dinner on Fridays and Saturdays (6 to 9pm) Exciting plans are currently being developed for further enhancement of both the activities available at this glorious site and of the clubhouse itself. Watch out for further news!

The six races in each Series will alternate between the popular pursuit and average lap formats. • T he annual Commodore’s Charity Pursuit race will again be run in November bridged by the ten-race Winter Series. • S ome Fully Crewed races will again be open to double handed and/or white sail boats that wish to compete. Double Handed • The most popular Double Handed Series in the Solent returns to a eight-race Main Series for 2017 with two four-race sub-series Solent and Passage. There will be social events ashore and one discard for each sub-series; two overall for the Main Series. • Having run the IRC Double Handed National Championships since its inception in 2014 we have been invited to run it again in 2017. A four-race Championship Regatta will start on Friday, September 8 with evening prizegiving and social events in Cowes. Fully Crewed Racing Royal Southampton Yacht Club is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive programmes of year round fully crewed racing of any Solent yacht club. Many of our events are run on Southampton Water adjacent to our Ocean Village clubhouse and offer challenging and competitive racing but without the Solent chop. Southampton Water is in easy reach of Southampton, Hythe, Hamble and Cowes marinas and offers scope for a wide variety of racing using fixed and laid race marks to suit the sailing wind. Conditions are generally more sheltered than the Solent whilst the funnelling effect of the channel sometimes means that we have enough sailing breeze when conditions in the Solent are too light. Many races are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats. Typically there will be racing for two or three classes but we are always willing to establish a class for six or more similar boats. Races are normally followed by a prizegiving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar where hot food and a warm welcome await.

Sunday Morning Racing Between January to May and October to November we race on Sunday mornings. Typically we run two races per morning, each of around an hour’s duration starting at 10.00 with racing normally finishing in time for lunch.

Thursday Evening Racing Between May and August our Southampton Water racing is held on Thursday evenings with a mixture of pursuit and average lap races; one per evening. White sail and double handed boats are welcome. Get out on the water after a hard day at the office; enjoy the hour’s racing and the sunset before heading back to the Ocean Village clubhouse bar for prize giving.

Double Handed Racing

W

e are proud to organise what is probably the most popular double handed racing in the country.

Both Solent and Passage Series will each consist of four races with one discard. The Solent Series is made up of The Spring, Autumn, West Princessa and Nab Doubles. The Island, Weymouth and Long Distance Doubles make up the Alongshore Series. The Main series will comprise all eight races with two discards. The new Mike Golding Trophy will once again reward the best contribution to the spirit of double handed racing. If you’ve not raced double handed, come and see what you’ve been missing! There’s a great atmosphere both on and off the water. In the RSYC Double Handed Series there are individual race class prizes and trophies, plus class trophies for the Solent, Passage and Main Series. SPRING SOLENT DOUBLE (Solent) Early May B/H Saturday, 29th April The first race of the season and of the Main and Solent Series. Three or four hours of racing with a windward leeward flavour where conditions allow in the Solent. A race prizegiving and welcome at the Ocean Village Clubhouse after racing. WEYMOUTH DOUBLE (Passage Series) Saturday / Sunday 20th and 21st May The first and second races of the Passage Series commence with an early start. This has been popular with both experienced and first time crews. There will be the usual celebration and prizegiving for the outbound leg on the Saturday evening. 20

Double Handed Racing ISLAND DOUBLE (Passage Series) Saturday, 17th June Always the most popular of the double handed races, regularly attracting more than 100 boats. Circumnavigate the Isle of Wight with The Needles to port and collect a pair of engraved glasses as well as competing for the usual prizes and trophies! WEST PRINCESSA DOUBLE (Solent Series) Saturday, 15th July East to West Princessa Buoy but be ready for some Solent marks or even a windward start. Once again, there’ll be a party and a prizegiving at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. Le Havre DOUBLE (Passage Series) Friday, 25th August The longest and the last of the 2016 Passage Series. This race over the August Bank Holiday can be challenging but a great welcome awaits us; plus it offers the opportunity to linger on the other side of the Channel and cruise home. NAB TOWER DOUBLE (Solent Series) Saturday, 9th September This is the classic race of around 30 nm from the central Solent to the Nab Tower and back and will be run alongside the IRC Double Handed National Championships (see below). Radio Controlled Boats

N

ow an established RSYC social and recreational facility for all, the Radio Control Section continues to offer access to the fun and enjoyment that this sport offers. Open to the younger generation right through to the more mature members of the RSYC.

The RC Section runs sailing events at GINS, workshops and marina sailing at OV and periodic talks on carvery evenings at OV. So not only a chance to sail RC boats, to partake of good food but also to ‘natter’ with the experts in this addictive sport. A joint initiative with the Yacht Design Course at Southampton Solent University provides for a very interesting collaboration, access to their design tools, construction facilities and their test tank. They in turn gain access to our events and club facilities. The RC Section has also been given a classic 50 year old ‘Vane’ boat for restoration. To get you started, the RSYC has two DF 65 club boats which can be hired for your initial RC experiences. At only £20 a boat per day, this is really good value and a great way to try out the sport without committing to a purchase. As your interest grows, the RC Section can help you choose and acquire your own boat. RC Yachts offer all the sailing, design and tactical challenges, as well as the sensations of sailing larger yachts and dinghies, all at a minimal cost. Try it and see for yourself!

Cadet Sailing 2017

W

e see it as one of our fundamental responsibilities to encourage youngsters to get involved in our sport and to give them a safe and friendly introduction to what we hope may become a lifetime’s pleasure. Our Cadet events run though the year mainly in school holidays and mainly from our Gins clubhouse on the River Beaulieu. These family orientated but fully formally supervised days and weekends offer sailing and boating in a range of craft and a real chance for young people to gain hands-on experience. Often Cadets are related to RSYC Members but that’s not a pre-requisite: All are welcome. Please see our 2017 diary of cadet events and contact us for more details.

rsyc Trust

T

he RSYC Trust is the charitable arm of the Club and aims to make boating more accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstances.

For many years the Club has supported various organisations through its Commodore’s Charity initiative and in the last year, has expanded the charitable efforts into an RSYC Trust run totally by volunteers. The aim is to promote the advancement of amateur sport, in particular the provision of facilities, equipment and assistance, including the awarding of grants, to enable and encourage participation in sailing and associated activities for the benefit of the public in the south of England. The aims however are not limited solely to advancement of sailing but include other associated activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding and model yachting. In addition to the awarding grants or awards RSYC will develop sailing and instructing capability at Gins to enable the activities to be provided in-house. www.rsyc.org.uk

Destination Hamble Gins Marchwood

HW Portsmouth 1840 GMT 1120 GMT 1040 GMT

Height 4.1m 4.7m 4.4m

Once again our year begins with the frostbite rallies. These are planned so that the hardier souls whose boats are still afloat can come by water but by restricting the destinations to the mainland all may attend whatever the weather. These rallies are an excellent opportunity to discuss the summer plans for the individual yachts or for newer Members to meet and join in. They can be icebreakers in more ways than one! The destination for our first rally is Mercury Marina where there is plenty of room in the marina and amble car parking too. We will meet in the evening at the Water Edge Restaurant. Our second rally is to Gins and is timed to coincide with the party to celebrate the opening of the clubhouse after the winter break. Our third is to a traditional favourite, Marchwood. Whether you come by boat or by car, join us and make a great start to the new cruising season.

Spring Rally Date Mar 18

Destination Folly Inn

HW Portsmouth 1500 GMT

Height 4.2m

This is a new early cruise for those whose boats are now in the water, a Spring Rally to a favourite destination. www.rsyc.org.uk

Training

T

he RSYC is a fully accredited RYA Training Centre. We provide a range of both practical and theory courses to Club Members and nonmembers alike.

Theory courses are, in the main, held at the Club. Powerboat Level 2 courses are held on local waters using the Club’s own Ribcraft 585 powerboat. There is also a very healthy training scheme for those Members wishing to progress through the RYA qualified race officer scheme and, once again, practical training takes place on the Club committee boat, a Mitchell 31, and the Ribcraft 585. From time to time, a one day structured safety programme for man-overboard training and flare demonstration is run to allow Members to practise on their own boats those aspects not normally covered by other courses. The recovery of a dummy from the water using own methods being the main exercise, but the opportunity to handle and fire flares is also part of the day’s activities.

The RYA Courses offered include: Basic Navigation and Safety Theory; Day Skipper Theory; Yachtmaster Theory; Sea Survival; ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate; Diesel Engine; GMDSS VHF; RADAR; First Aid; ISAF Personal Safety. Powerboat Level 2 and practical ‘own boat’ assessments for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) together with Inland Waterways. CEVNI Endorsements are also offered. All courses are run by fully qualified RYA instructors. Given sufficient numbers, other courses and course dates can be arranged in addition to those currently listed in the Club programme. Please keep an eye on the Training area of the website for more details. Visit the RSYC Website and subscribe to our e-bulletins for all the latest information. Information and updates about all our on the water events from cruising, racing, training and seminars to dinghies, cadets and radio controlled boats are in the Club programme and will also appear in our regular e-bulletins and on the website.

Events, Social Groups and Activities

S

ocialising with like-minded people is what Club life is all about. In the Summer this may be out on the water at rallies or on cruises, beside the beautiful Beaulieu river at Gins or overlooking the marina on the balconies of the Ocean village clubhouse. In the Winter friends may then gather for cosier parties and get-togethers, swapping stories and comparing notes. Excellent food, convivial bars and attentive staff all contribute to the special experience that is RSYC. Our reputation as a friendly club has not come about by accident — we work hard to bring our newer members into the heart of the Club. Invitations to receptions hosted by the Commodore and Committee members throughout their first year of membership enable them to be introduced to compatible people and activities that interest them. The Club offers a huge range of social opportunities beyond its core boating activities of racing, cruising, dinghy sailing, radio controlled yachts and RYA accredited training. These include organised events, special interest groups and one off activities. Details of those already scheduled are as follows, but make sure to read your regular e-bulletins and check on the website (www.rsyc.org.uk) for additional functions. Also remember to look at the Cruising and Racing pages of this booklet for the additional social events and talks organised by these groups.

Formal Parties As a Royal Club we know how to do formal well - and make it fun! During the Winter season we console ourselves for the reduction in activity on the water with legendary black tie and posh frock parties. Live music, dancing, entertainment and inventive menus showcasing the skills of our professional chefs make these particularly special. It’s even more fun if you make up a table of friends, who can be either Members or your personal guests who are not Members. This year all of these are being held at the Ocean Village clubhouse. If it’s not already too late, book immediately for Burns Night (Sat, January 21) as this has become so successful that reservations from Scots, quasi Scots and Sassenachs who just enjoy a good party tend to come in early. There’s plenty of time however to book for the formal parties the other side of the summer. Whilst not black tie, the Commodore’s Cocktail Party (Fri, July 28) marking the beginning of Cowes Week, is one of the smartest events on our Calendar, attended by many of our Honorary Members; it is followed by a formal dinner. The winter season is launched by the grand Commodore’s Dinner (Sat, October 21). And then, before you know it, it’s time to get dressed up for the Christmas Party, which this year is on Sat, December 16. Then wind down from your Christmas activities and party your heart out to welcome in 2018 at our glamorous New Year’s Eve celebration!

Events, Social Groups and Activities Members’ Social Events at Ocean Village Have a look at the centrefold calendar to see the many other events lined up for you this year. Dress for these is typically Smart or Smart Casual, which Members interpret as they think appropriate. The days of compulsory jackets and ties for men are long gone, apart of course from the formal events above, but these are frequently worn to smarter events. Our exciting innovation this year is the Dining Club. Themed cuisines will be matched with a selection of wine for tasting and discussion. Book in now for Friday, February 17– and if you like what we’re doing join us again in May (12), July (7) and October (6). The long established Steak & Kidney Pudding Club serves the absolutely best Steak and Kidney pudding you will ever have tasted (apart from your Grandmother’s maybe? – but possibly not even that) These huge shared suet crust puddings are a surviving tradition of our Victorian Gentlemen’s club days, and have to be tasted to be believed. (But there is a light alternative for modern healthier eaters too). The Pudding Club is held in the evening of the third Wednesday of each Winter month (i.e. January to April inclusive and again in October and November.) You are entertained afterwards by an informative talk while you digest. The topic is advertised prior to each event. The vibrant Carvery and Quiz Night is on the second Thursday of the month from October to April. Teams of six compete over the seven months. Newcomers are welcome to come along at any time and will be assigned to a team if they do not already have one. The Convivial Evenings on the last Friday of each month, which were launched last year, have proved a popular way of staying in touch with friends and making new ones. Just come for a few drinks or stay on for supper too (Please make sure you let the office or restaurant know if you are planning to eat – The chef prefers not to have too many surprises, though he can usually handle a few spontaneous decisions on the night) This is a hosted event, to ensure that newcomers are quickly introduced around to the more regular attendees. The RSYC Trust is our newly established Charity, which has been founded to reach out to young people whose circumstances mean they might not otherwise have the chance to experience water sports. It is partly funded by our Commodore’s charity. There will be a Horse and Pig Racing fundraising event for this extremely worthwhile cause on Sat, March 11. Get a team together (or be assigned to one on the night if you prefer) and come and have fun. Big Band boppers should enjoy the nostalgic Glenn Miller Night on April 22. If you’re square, be there! Our Fashion Shows are not, perhaps surprisingly, Ladies Only occasions. Partners are typically coaxed along by the promise of the pre-show meal, followed by the opportunity of watching the show or enjoying camaraderie in the bar while it is on (The attractive models obligingly make a point of strolling through the bar and giving a twirl at the end of their turns; the gentlemen have not been heard to object… ) Devernois of Bedford Place, Southampton, will be treating us to a preview of their Autumn/Winter collection on Wednesday, October 4. We round off our Ocean Village programme with Carols Around the Tree on Thurs, December 21, followed by the Carvery. A great start to Christmas proper!

Events, Social Groups and Activities Members’ Social Events at Gins Gins closes for the winter break in mid December but comes back to life with an Opening Party on February 11. This is when we start to believe Summer must be on its way, out there, somewhere… April Fools Day has been chosen as the appropriate date for an evening of Comedy and Magic, enhanced by a choice of delicious Curries. This gloriously located venue overlooking the Beaulieu River fully comes into its own in the summer months, when Members celebrate their good fortune in having this a ‘jewel in the crown’. On July 1 we mark the Round The Island Race with a Round the Island Party. Hopefully a few Club Skippers and Crews will make it back to Gins to regale the rest of us with tales of the day. This is followed on Saturday, July 15 with an Absolutely Must Do Summer Party. (Think Pimms, sunshine, girls in floaty dresses… the Weather Gods have had their instructions!). Why jostle with the crowds in Cowes to see the fireworks at the end of Cowes Week when you can watch them from afar while sitting comfortably on the Gins Terrace with a glass in your hand, and then sit down to the Cowes Fireworks Dinner (Fri, August 4). Saturday, September 9 sees the Gins Proms Concert – the Last Night of the Proms broadcasted live from the Albert Hall. Bring flags patriotic gear - and perhaps throat sprays? The Gins Autumn party on Saturday, Nov 11 is a cosy affair as we admire the glorious foliage of the New Forest from the warmth of the Clubhouse and discuss our Summer happenings over good food and wine. Gins weekly Sunday lunchtime Carveries sign off for a couple of months with their Closing Carvery Lunch on December 10. The Clubhouse then officially closes down till mid February 2018. But it comes to life again for one day in this period for the Members’ popular After Christmas Walk on Weds Dec 27 on the shores of the Beaulieu Estate, and Chef comes briefly out of hibernation to provide a buffet lunch. Access to the Estate is with the kind permission of Lord Montagu, whose late father was Commodore and a lifelong staunch supporter of our Club. It was he who granted the lease of the land on which RSYC built this Clubhouse over 50 years ago. We continue to be very appreciative of this privilege.

Luncheons Formal lunches at Ocean Village are organised during the year, starting with the Valentines Lunch, with an appropriately themed menu, for couples who prefer to mark the day earlier rather than over dinner. The Mothering Sunday lunch is on March 26 this year. Make sure to book early for this one – the lavish Sunday carveries are often over-subscribed, even without the excuse of a special event! The Royal Ladies Lunch on Thursday Nov 9 offers the rare chance to listen to the Queen’s own dressmaker and to meet up and find common interest with lady members of other Royal Clubs in the region. www.rsyc.org.uk

Events, Social Groups and Activities And of course the famous RSYC Carvery Lunches are held every Sunday throughout the year at both Ocean Village and Gins Clubhouses (excluding the Gins winter closure months) Booking at both is essential.

Supper Talks Evening talks are intermittently arranged throughout the year to link with the regular Thursday night Carvery or Weds Bistro dining. This year there will be a variety of topics considered to be of interest to members, on nautical and non-nautical subjects, including Cowes Harbour, Radio Controlled Yachts, a Cruising Author talk and book-signing, Classic Cars, Internet Security, plus plus….

Special Interest Groups In addition to the above array of social activities, the Club has developed a number of interest groups reflecting the enthusiasms of the Membership. Contact the Membership Secretary on 02380 210877 for details of who to contact about any of these – The Bridge Group plays fortnightly on a Weds from 2 to 5.30 pm. All levels are welcome. Partners are not essential. The recently formed Classic Car Group has tapped into a rich seam in the Club. Could we have more motoring than marine hardware amongst our Members?? Clay Shooting offers those with some experience the opportunity to practise and to compete with other clubs. Members’ Games Evenings are organised from time to time, according to interest. Monthly Painting and Drawing workshops have revealed previously unsuspected skills and are proving addictive, and intermittent Floral Display and Chocolate-making workshops are also popular. Outdoor activities at Gins – Dinghies and Kayaks are available for Members’ use at Gins. We are also in the process of increasing the range of outdoor activities available to maximise enjoyment of this wonderful area of outstanding natural beauty. Plans are in place to provide bicycles, paddle-boards and other equipment as well as information on flora and fauna to make this Summer at Gins better than ever!

Trips Excursions are arranged as and when there is the opportunity and interest, and have recently included a trip to the rugby at Twickenham and to the Christmas Market in Bath. Further ones are proposed to theatre productions, Ascot and Goodwood, amongst others. We work hard in the Club to be as inclusive as possible to all members. Avoiding an overdominating ‘couples’ culture is part of this, and these trips offer both singles and couples a pleasant way of sharing interests and integrating.

Member Private Functions Birthday parties, Anniversaries, Weddings – If Members have a family or other special event to celebrate, do talk to the General Manager or the Events team to see how the club may be able to help you to celebrate in style, at a sensible price, at Ocean Village or Gins. Attractive rates are also available for business or group meetings and dinners. www.rsyc.org.uk
