Welcome
F
irstly a very warm welcome to all those reading this brochure and considering playing golf at Ryde Golf Club which is arguably the most challenging course on the Isle of Wight.
Ryde Golf Club has a long history dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria and is situated on the outskirts of Ryde and benefits from easy and frequent ferry services from the mainland. Founded on October 8th 1895 the Club moved to its present site in 1923. This picturesque, tree lined, 9 hole parkland course, covers some 49 acres with breathtaking views of the Solent.
4 | Ryde Golf Club
In addition to our superb course maintained by our head greenkeeper and his team, the Board of Directors and a Management team work extremely hard running the club for the benefit of the members and visitors alike. After your round of golf you might like to relax in the clubhouse where our welcoming staff will provide you with refreshments from our extensive menu or just a drink at the bar.
Our website will provide you with all the information you need for your visit and also details of membership. If further information is required then please do not hesitate to contact our Manager who will be only too willing to assist you.
Finally I would like to wish our Members and all future guests an enjoyable days golf whenever they play our magnificent course. CLUB PRESIDENT: Michael Timms
Our Men’s, Ladies, Senior, and Junior sections are extremely popular and have many club competitions for you to participate in as well as some on the mainland. The Club also enjoys reciprocal playing privileges with a number of South Coast clubs.

About The Club
O
riginally founded in 1895, Ryde Golf Club was located close to Westridge Farm off Bullen Road. It offers a genuinely warm welcome to golfers of all ages and levels of expertise.
6 | Ryde Golf Club
Individuals or groups will discover an excellent 9 hole course layout with some alternate tees for the second 9, and one alternate green providing 18 holes of challenging golf with a par of 70.
History
I
n 1922 the club reported the news that the daughter of Queen Victoria H.R.H Princess Beatrice had become patroness of the club a piece of history the club are still very proud off.
In 1949 Ryde Golf Club put on an exhibition match with the visit of Ryder Cup players Percy Allis(father of BBC Peter) and Reggie Whitcombe.
Whitcombe played with J Tulloch (Club Champion 1949) against Allis and Gerald Newbury (Club’s lowest Handicap player). In the afternoon the two Ryder Cup players played each other and the match was halfed.

The Course Tour
T
his 2x9 hole 5,772 yard course is a par 70 and each hole has its challenges. This is a hard but fair course and you will find it a pleasure to play. The well kept greens are pacey with some tricky par 3s which characterise this entertaining course, and provides a real challenge for golfers of all ability levels – especially in windy conditions.
8 | Ryde Golf Club
Hole 1 & 10 The Dip. Par 4 Si 10/9 388 Yards: With OOB all the way down the right and a fairway bunker to the left a straight tee shot is required if you want your round to start off well. The green is protected by two mounds at the front and a bunker at the rear to guard it.
Hole 2 & 11 A Fair Way. Par 5 Si 4/3 504 Yards: This is the longest hole on the course at 504 yards. Again OOB all the way up the right. A straight tee shot is required but you will also be good on the left side of the fairway. A ditch crossing the fairway, with a bunker just beyond may catch your second shot so club selection is key. The two left hand side bunkers protect the upward sloping green but beware as there is OOB beyond the green too.
Hole 3 & 12 Old Oaks. Par 4 Si 8/7 389 Yards: This is a gentle dog-leg right with the ideal tee shot favouring the left hand side of the fairway with a slight fade. There are trees left and right so an accurate tee shot is required. The green which slopes upward has bunkers left and right to protect it, but again beware as OOB is beyond the green and all the way down the right hand side.
Hole 4 & 13 Tall Pines. Par 4 Si 12/11 348 Yards: This challenging par 4 is a dog-leg left. With trees on the left and the tall pine trees on the right an accurate tee shot is what’s required. There is a ditch along the centre of the fairway at 240 yards to be aware of and a bunker on the right of the green. Big hitters who draw the ball may be tempted to take tiger line and take all the trouble away with a risk reward tee shot.
Hole 5 & 14 The Pond. Par 4 Si 14/15 284 Yards: This is a gentle dog-leg left over the pond to well established trees to the left. The green is driveable but from the back tee you may want to lay up and pitch to the green if you have a good card going. The green is protected by a pot bunker to the right of the green to catch errant approach shots with a slope at the rear of the green if you pitch too far.
Ryde Golf Club | 9
The Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 6 & 15 Squirrel’s Corner. Par 4 Si 16 & 1 Hole 6 is 290 yards with a dog-leg left. A tee shot down the middle will leave a pitch into a green with slopes from left to right towards a bunker to catch poor approach shots. There is also a bunker to the left and front of the green so an accurate approach shot is required. Hole 15 is stroke index 1 as it lies a further 57 yards back as it has a narrow gap to drive through. The approach shot is the same as hole 6 once you get your drive away. OOB is on the right hand side of the hole.
10 | Ryde Golf Club
Hole 7 & 16 Bridges. Par 3 Si 6 & 17 Hole 7 is a 175 yard par 3 uphill to a green that slopes back towards you. A cleanly hit and accurate tee shot will bring rewards but there is a tree to the right that might affect your shot. You drive over the brook and there is OOB right so beware. Hole 16 is a 138 yard par 3 also over the brook to a green that is protected by 3 greenside bunkers. With the green having two tiers to make putting tougher than you think. OOB left.
Hole 8 & 17 The Carry. Par 4 Si 2 & 5 Hole 8 is a 371 yard par 4 with a dog-leg right from the back tee. There are trees left and right to catch poor tee shots so an accurate shot is required here. The approach shot is into a green that runs off both left and right but it has a large landing area for good shots. Hole 17 is only a further 17 yards forward but sometimes club selection should be looked at.
Hole 9 & 18. Par 3 Si 18/13 Hole 9 is a 124 yard par 3 to a two tiered green which is highly protected by 3 big bunkers. Club selection could vary from a wedge to a 7 iron depending on the wind direction. Hole 18 is a further 23 yards back and also 40 yards further left making it a completely different hole. Club selection again is key.
Key Holes: Best hole is 8/17 which is a great driving hole and has the best views. Easy holes are not easy to find as it’s all about club selection. The most difficult hole is 15th which has a tight driving area so accuracy is paramount on this par 4.
