The Helm and Mantling are in red and gold. Above the helm is an unusual coronet which links the area to its Roman past.
The adoption of these armorial bearings was very appropriate as it covers the history of Keynsham and Saltford over one thousand years.
The Golden Dragon relates to the Dragon of Wessex, the Royal West Saxon connection to Keynsham.

COURSE TOUR Saltford Golf Course has become one of Somerset’s finest golf courses, providing an excellent challenge to golfers of all abilities throughout the year. The course is always in first class condition and rarely closes during the winter months, when we continue to use the main greens whenever possible. Our PGA Professional Darren Read is here to give you the hole-by-hole tour and a few tips to help you conquer our Par 71, 6402 yard course. Hole 1 – Par 5, 531 yards. S.I. 9 This hole throws you in at the deep end as a tough par 5 sets you on your way. To get your round off to a good start it is best to hug the left hand side on this left to right dogleg to avoid the out of bounds area on the right. This approach gives you more options to attempt to find the green with your second shot.
Hole 2 – Par 3, 168 yards. S.I. 15 Bunkers on the left and the right guard the long and narrow green so take care from the tee because an inaccurate tee-shot could land your ball in trouble. Hole 3 – Par 4, 344 yards. S.I. 11 This short par 4 slopes from left to right and can be tough for anyone who attempts to reach the green in one. Any balls that come up short may be punished by the deep bunker on the front right of the green. A short shot left of the oak tree only leaves a short approach and a good birdie opportunity.

COURSE TOUR

Hole 4 – Par 4, 423 yards. S.I. 3 This dead straight hole is the highest point on the course. The fairway rolls away to the right and the short rough on the left can leave you in trouble as can the stream which crosses the fairway. Two well-placed shots can set you up well but a par on this hole will feel like a victory. Hole 5 – Par 5, 571 yards. S.I. 7 This is a hole for the big hitters. Avoid the left hand side which is covered in woodland and be sure to take care with your second shot. It is possible to reach the hole in two but short hitters may want to pitch up short before attempting to reach the green. Hole 6 – Par 4, 442 yards. S.I. 1 There is no room for error on this tricky par 4. Favouring the left hand side gives you the best chance of reaching the green in two as the hole opens up just short of the ridge from where the green is visible.
12 | www.saltfordgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 7 – Par 4, 346 yards. S.I. 17 A right to left dogleg par 4 that goes downhill, this hole is relatively straightforward but you have to be wary of the three bunkers on the left of the fairway. An iron off the tee leaves you a simple shot to the green. Hole 8 – Par 4, 453 yards. S.I. 5 Everything runs to the left on this long par 4 and the trees are hard to avoid. Problems abound when you reach this green and leaving the ball a long way from the flag on this two tiered green will make a par score difficult to achieve. Halfway House The natural stone-built Halfway House behind the 8th green provides delicious hot and cold snacks all the year round. A bacon roll or cup of tea is the perfect start to the second half of your round. Toilet facilities are also located here.
Hole 9 – Par 3, 165 yards. S.I. 13 This hole has a very narrow approach and is surrounded by bunkers and, to make things even trickier, shots normally have to be taken into the prevailing wind. If you’re going to miss the green here it is best to miss to the left.
Hole 12 – Par 4, 340 yards. S.I. 10 This short par 4 over the valley offers up stunning views of Bath and Kelston. It is a hole the long hitters relish as they see the possibility of an eagle but the greenside bunkers punish those who aren’t accurate. Brave golfers will often be rewarded.
Hole 10 – Par 4, 364 yards. S.I. 6 The tee shot is the key to success on this tricky par 4. The green may look tempting but beware as the severe back to front slope makes it the most difficult two putt on the course.
Hole 13 – Par 4, 423 yards. S.I. 2 A tight fairway makes for a tricky hole with well placed trees ready to catch wayward shots. A three tiered green makes putting tough and, as with many of our holes, a par should be considered a very good result.
Hole 11 – Par 3, 154 yards. S.I. 12 One of the most picturesque holes on the course; a sloping green surrounded by bunkers leaves little room for error and only a wellplaced shot to the centre of the green will give you any hope of a birdie.
Hole 14 – Par 5, 476 yards. S.I. 16 Out of bounds on the right and a line of trees on the left means that only a straight shot down the fairway will see you in a good position for your second shot. Longer hitters may be tempted to go for the green in two but bunkers short of the green await, so take care.

COURSE TOUR

Hole 15 – Par 4, 298 yards. S.I. 18 The wind usually plays a factor on the shortest par 4 on the course. Many hidden undulations can catch visitors out but it is a feature to which our members have grown accustomed. Panoramic views of Bath and Bristol can be enjoyed from the tee. Hole 16 – Par 4, 385 yards. S.I. 4 It’s back across the valley for the 16th and a tough par 4 which can be deceptively long. Avoiding the bank on the right is your best chance of making the green in two.
14 | www.saltfordgolfclub.co.uk
Hole 17 – Par 3, 156 yards. S.I. 14 This is our signature hole; a drop hole par 3 with a lake-fed stream and a deep bunker protecting the green, it is truly a sight to behold. Aim for the back of the green to be safe or the hazards could claim your ball. Hole 18 – Par 4, 363 yards. S.I. 8 A tight drive through an avenue of trees gets you on your way for the final hole. With dense woodland on the left and an out of bounds area on the right there can be no margin for error. Once the tee shot is on the fairway a relatively simple second should see you on the green. With the testing course completed breathe a sigh of relief and go and enjoy a drink in the clubhouse.
Dry Stone Walls When we discovered that we had, at the side of one of our tees, an ancient parish boundary wall which had been reduced to a heap of rubble, a group of senior members decided to try and rebuild it. Their enthusiasm and success was such that for the following four years they rebuilt several other dry stone walls which now add history and charm to our course.
The commitment of our members to take up this challenge and help rebuild a part of the club that is so significantly tied to our history shows the passion our members hold for the club. This is something that makes us very proud.

PRACTICE FACILITIES Driving Range The new floodlit driving range is the club’s latest initiative in its mission to become one of the leading golf clubs in the South West. An 8 bay, fully floodlit covered driving range was the culmination of years of planning and negotiation with external contractors. The range itself has been fully landscaped by the use of thousands of tonnes of imported fill material, which was then grassed to produce natural looking mounding. The driving bays offer the latest state of the art technology and balls are dispensed to customers by means of a plastic swipe card, which can be charged with money in the Pro Shop, making the whole process simple, smooth and user friendly. The low level floodlighting is extremely effective and unobtrusive and this allows the range to be fully open for use until 9.00pm throughout the year.
Resident PGA Club Professional Darren Read said: “The 300 yards range is a great addition to our practice and teaching facilities. It means we can hold lessons regardless of the weather and we hope a lot of schools will be using this facility to introduce young people to golf.” Planning restrictions mean that the range is only open to club members and visiting golfers. However, range membership is currently available at just £20 per annum, which includes £10 put on the swipe card for use in the clubhouse. This new facility, together with our practice chipping area, putting green and indoor practice room makes Saltford Golf Club the venue of choice for many golfers in the surrounding area. Other additions to these extensive facilities will be an approach course at the far end of the driving range, and a purpose built new chipping green. These will enable youngsters and beginners to learn the game of golf. This is scheduled to open in 2019.

Each junior is allocated an unofficial handicap of 72 (4 per hole) as soon as they progress to the black tees and, through the numerous competitions run on the black tees, can reduce their handicap to 30 at which point they will progress to the yellow tees.
