WELCOME Established in 1894, Sherborne Golf Club one of the premier clubs in Dorset offering a superb and challenging 18 hole golf course, and a warm and friendly welcome to everyone. Situated in one of the most picturesque areas of Dorset countryside, the course is maintained to the very highest standards, and when coupled with our superb practice facilities, and recently refurbished clubhouse and award winning steward, we are able to offer the full golfing package to all our members and visitors. Set in a distinctive hilltop location in rural northwest Dorset, Sherborne boasts one of the finest
mature parkland courses in the South West of England. In fact, due to Sherborne’s unique hilltop location, the course drains outstandingly well, meaning the course was shut for only two days during the 2013/14 winter; the wettest winter on record for 200 years. Here at Sherborne Golf Club we pride ourselves on being one of the friendliest golf clubs in the area and extend our warm welcome to new members, societies and visitors. Recent new members and visitors have commented how everyone smiles and says hello.
Many who experience what we have to offer frequently return and have now been visiting us for years! In addition, Sherborne boasts a thriving membership, and we pride ourselves as a well-run, traditional members club with an egalitarian and forward-looking attitude. All our members agree this results in an unrivalled, sociable environment. The result is a unique golf club where traditional barriers have been overcome, and we welcome you to come along and join us to see what makes us special.

Prospectus regarding James Braid 1930’s redesign

HISTORY Sherborne Golf Club was originally founded as the Blackmore Vale Golf Club in February 1894, as a 9 hole course near Sandford Road. As a result of the club’s popularity, by March 1894 the club already had 42 members, within a year the club moved to Clatcombe Farm. After a few location changes the County Record Office confirms the club’s planning application for the current site was approved in 1910.
6 SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB
At this time the club dropped the Blackmore Vale name and became the Sherborne Golf Club, playing on 9 holes, eight of which were sited on the existing course on the northern clubhouse side of the lane. The club remained as 9 holes until 1936 when the famous open champion and course architect James Braid designed 10 new holes on land south of the lane and totally redesigned the old nine holes to become eight of an entirely different character.
Now a high quality 18 hole course, Sherborne was ready to enter the Premier League of County golf – however, the war intervened. For the war years the club reverted to 9 holes and much of James Braid’s work was lost to agriculture, and continued as 9 holes for some time. A further blow was the loss of the clubhouse and almost all the club’s records in a disastrous fire in 1955.
Preliminary work to bring back the lost 9 holes began in 1959. As the club had no money for the project, each committee member was allocated a green and with the help of volunteers using their own tools, and the help of the local Youth Club clearing stones from fairways. The lost holes were gradually brought back into play over a period of 5 years. To celebrate the return of the 18 hole course in 1964, there was an exhibition match between Peter Alliss, John Jacobs, Bernard Hunt and Dai Rees.
Over the remainder of the 20th century there were some small changes to the second, third and fourteenth holes and improvements to the clubhouse. In 2000 parts of the course were remodelled and lengthened – building three new greens, reusing two of the greens, extending the course into the practice ground, and gaining a number of new holes.
Currently holes 2, 3 and 4 are being landscaped to improve their definition, also with some smaller improvements on holes 7, 8 and 13. Much of the work has been completed, grass re-sown and is in play, giving a new perspective for these holes. However one factor has remained constant ever since 1894: the course and club has maintained its warm and welcoming environment for all.
SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB 7
About The Course Set in a unique hilltop location, the Sherborne Golf Club has a wonderfully British feel and design, boasting a 6425 yard course with a variety of golfing challenges that do not require big hitting to score well. The course has a first-rate design, much influenced by renowned 1930’s course designer James Braid, and is part of the Braid Association. Lined with mature trees, the Sherborne course stretches out across the gentle undulating Dorset landscape. In fact, the beauty of the course can be deceptive, and many visitors describe the course as a ‘wolf in sheep’s
8 SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB
clothing’, as it often proves tougher than it looks, ranked at par 72, course SSS off the white tees is 71. Each hole poses a different challenge; with an abundance of hazards all defined by the tree lined parkland setting. We’re sure you’ll come away from Sherborne impressed by the condition of both surroundings and course. Certainly, there’s nothing in the area to beat the views, the layout and the quality of the fairways and greens. Try not to get too distracted by the lush, well-manicured fairways with your shots
from the tee, and be prepared to face some well-protected greens often with testing pin positions. And even if your score ends up a little higher than expected, you will walk off the course having enjoyed the peace and tranquillity offered by this unique course. In fact, in 2014 Sherborne opened a modern green-keepers complex to support the club’s maintenance of the course to highest standard. The green-keepers’ complex demonstrates the club’s continual investment in its playing surface, and assures all of its long-term provisions for its quality course.

Course Tour If you have never played at Sherborne Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait, and how to avoid them, by following our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1- Par 4 – 407 Yards Hole One provides a good testing start to your round. The drive should favour the left half of the fairway to keep away from the danger of the trees and open up the approach to the green. A solid second shot pitched short of the green and left of the bunker, will feed onto the testing green that slopes from front to back.
10 SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB
Hole 2 – Par 4 – 357 Yards
Hole 3 – Par 4 – 330 Yards
This dog leg par 4 forces you to drive right of the bunker that protects the direct route to the hole. Long hitters may risk trying to carry the bunker to open up the green and all should beware the steep slopes with rough left and right of the fairway that will catch a misdirected shot.
What this hole lacks in length it makes up for in trickery. The tee-shot has to be placed between the steep slope on the right and a bunker in the fairway on the left. A long iron or fairway wood from the tee may avoid the bunker coming into play. It is essential to place your approach shot onto the correct level of this two tiered green, which is protected by bunkers in front and to the right. The safe approach shot will be played towards the back of the green avoiding the bunkers.
Hole 4 – Par 4 – 339 Yards
Hole 5 – Par 4 – 439 Yards
Hole 6 – Par 5 – 490 Yards
This tee shot has to be played for position with most golfers choosing to play short of the fairway bunkers. This will leave a straight forward approach shot from around 150 yards to a generous green sloping from back to front. The front bunker offers the green protection on the left side with the green falling away on each side and at the back to punish the wayward shot.
The fifth is the toughest hole at Sherborne, and can ruin your scorecard before your round has really started. The generous uphill fairway narrows sharply with a dogleg to the right with three bunkers on the right corner to be avoided, along with the infamous Braid’s bush in the middle of the fairway. A wayward approach to the right will be sucked in by the bunkers whilst any shot to the left of the green will kick down into the trees. A bogey on this hole will please most golfers.
The tee shot on this the first of the par 5’s needs to be steered straight through the tunnel of trees to a fairway protected by a sand bunker left and a grass bunker right. A good drive for the longer hitters will set them up for a long second shot to try and feed between four bunkers protecting the downhill green. More moderate golfers will find a nice wide lay-up area from where they can try to pitch and putt for a birdie.
SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB 11
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 7 – Par 3 – 188 Yards
Hole 8 – Par 5 – 487 Yards
Hole 9 – Par 3 – 192 Yards
The first of three par 3’s at Sherborne, all of which stay in the memory of all visiting golfers. Hole Seven offers a stern test with the green drifting away to the right protected by three well positioned bunkers. Longer players need to hit a high soft landing shot to the narrow green. Shorter hitters would be well advised to play short of the green to the left and try to pitch close for their par.
This sweeping right to left par 5 needs to be played to the right of the centre of the fairway as any shot to the left will be caught by fir trees and thrown down out of bounds. There is a wellpositioned bunker on the right of the fairway to make you think about your tee shot and a fairway bunker on the left threatens an errant second shot Your approach to this long green needs to be flown all the way onto the putting surface as anything landing short will be thrown down the bank to the left of the green.
This tough par 3 offers no safety for any shot that does not hit the receptive green, which slopes from back to front. Anything short or left will fall violently away from the green, and a safer shot to the right of the green will leave a treacherous downhill chip to the green – provided you manage to avoid the two deep bunkers positioned to catch your ball!
12 SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB
Hole 10 – Par 4 – 404 Yards
Hole 11 – Par 5 – 510 Yards
Hole 12 – Par 4 – 456 Yards
The start of the back nine provides a stern testing dog leg par 4. The tee shot needs to hug the trees on the left of the fairway towards the big tree in the distance. Your approach shot needs to be played short of the green where the downhill approach will carry the ball onto the green. Again this approach needs to be in the middle of the fairway to avoid the bunkers protecting the large sloping green.
Don’t be fooled by the stroke index of this hole as it plays every yard of its 510 yards. This double dog leg undulating hole needs to be played between two sets of trees on your lay-up shot with three large cross bunkers stopping golfers from running the ball towards the green. Once in the lay-up position, a green that sits across you protected by bunkers either side and hollows around the green will test any golfers approach shot.
The second toughest hole on the course, which leads you away from the clubhouse again, is an inviting hole that gently sweeps down into the fairway and green in the distance. Your drive should favour the left hand side of the fairway inside the line of the trees to avoid the left to right slope pushing your ball towards the awaiting bunker and rough. All but the big hitters will play their second shot short of the green from a sloping lie to leave a straight forward pitch to the green which has bunkers either side.
SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB 13
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 13 – Par 4 –331 Yards
Hole 14 – Par 4 – 311 Yards
Hole 15 – Par 3 – 162 Yards
From a new men’s tee more in keeping with James Braid’s original design, play your tee shot into the uphill fairway avoiding the trees left and the slopes on the right which will kick your ball into the trouble. Your uphill second shot from a sloping lie needs to clear two fairway bunkers 90 yards short of the green to make the green or leave a straight forward approach to the first unprotected green on the course.
Once you have taken in the panoramic views of Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset countryside, you see the challenge that lies below you. The tee shot has to be played for position as distance isn’t vital here. The shot should favour the right side of the sloping fairway to roll towards the middle, which opens up the hidden green. Anything short of the green will kick away to the left and anything long will fall away violently from the bank at the back of the green.
On the 15th two treacherous bunkers will catch any ball on the front of the green leaving a bunker shot to a green well above your head. The back of the green is sloped to gather any ball that goes long of the hole. The advice for this hole is always to take an extra club, keep your head down and hope it will fly far enough!
14 SHERBORNE GOLF CLUB
Hole 16 – Par 4 – 370 Yards
Hole 17 – Par 4 – 276 Yards
Hole 18 – Par 4 – 351 Yards
Your tee shot should played to the left of the ravine toward the shared fairway with the seventeenth. Any shot sliced to the right will fall into the ravine out of bounds. Longer hitters may try to carry the ravine but beware it is a 220 yard carry over tall trees. This really is a picturesque hole which can ruin any good score card.
A real risk and reward par 4 with the fairway narrowing the further that you go. The tee shot should be played to a safe spot on the fairway that will leave a straight uphill approach shot to a testing green. The hole is protected from the longer hitters with three deep bunkers placed in the bank which approaches the green. Again take an extra club to ensure that you make it all the way up to the green.
A tough uphill drive awaits you to finish your round. With out of bounds running up the right side of the hole, the tee shot should favour the left side of the fairway. This will also leave you an approach into the green by avoiding the two deep bunkers on the front right of the green. But beware a further bunker will catch any shot that drifts left of the green. The final green slopes from back to front with a putt that will always break more than you imagine! Finish with a gross or nett par here and you will walk off the course happy.

SHERBORNE WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES EST 1980
Commercial, Industrial & Domestic Window Cleaning We all have dreams and aspirations for the future, but some of us can envisage a bigger future than others. Even if you have achieved a ripe old age, you’ll probably have aspirations for your grandchildren or important causes. The key to a successful financial plan is setting personal life goals and objectives in the context of your money. What is important about money to you? Setting goals is not easy. Many people have never set a goal in their life. However, it can be life changing. How many people wish they could retire earlier than anticipated? How frustrating must it be to work five years longer than is strictly necessary? At Fort Financial Planning we analyse what you have already accumulated and help you to work out what should be kept, what should not and what needs to be changed. Over a period of time we help you to edge ever closer to your goals, both financial and personal. We help you to identify how much more you can spend without running out of money. To identify how much you might be able to give away, to family or good causes. We help you to identify how much risk you need to take with your investments, if indeed you need to take risk at all. We help you to build investment portfolios that will deliver what you want. We help to stop you from making typical investing mistakes.

J oine ry Fitting
Custom Fitting There has been a growing realisation in recent times that, along with professional coaching, golf equipment should allow each player to make the most of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification, but unfortunately golfers are not – we come in all shapes and sizes! The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suited to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in.
Custom fitting is a relatively new phenomenon which allows a set of clubs to be married with each golfer’s physique and swing characteristics. We understand the importance of being fitted correctly, whether for a glove, a pair of shoes, or ultimately for a set of golf clubs. Customising the clubs according to the user’s physical characteristics will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and develop a better swing plane. Without doubt this results in better scores.
Here at Sherborne Golf Club, our custom fittings team specialise in Titleist and Cobra woods, irons, wedges, utility clubs and putters, but can custom fit any brand of clubs that you require. It may even be possible to custom fit the clubs that you are currently using. Custom fitting costs less than you think, and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking, so contact the Pro Shop for more information.

The Clubhouse CONTINUED In the clubhouse dining areas our chefs serve hot and cold snacks and meals every day of the week, with a Chef’s specials board updated daily using fresh local produce in a selection of wholesome, home cooked dishes. Most Sundays the club offers a traditional roast lunch. Due to the popularity of the set menus and carveries we advise booking well in advance.
We are fully licensed with a selection of draught and speciality bottled beers, wines, and spirits, alongside an extensive range of soft drinks.
Here at Sherborne customer service is paramount to everything we do, and we pride ourselves on ensuring our accommodating staff make your visit to Sherborne a memorable one. Open Competitions We feel we have something special here at Sherborne, and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

These are broken down into different categories, comprised of Men’s, Ladies’, Senior Men’s, Mixed, Senior Mixed, and Junior. We also run a Pro-Am competition and Glovers Day, which are opportunities for visiting teams to play with a PGA Pro or a current or past Yeovil Town FC player or management staff member.
Our open events are normally very popular, with early entry submission advisable. Places will normally be allocated on a first-come firstserved basis in the event that any Open event becomes oversubscribed.
