ABOUT
Course Tour Hole 1 – Par 4 – 255 yds
Hole 2 –Par 4 – 363 yds
Hole 3 – Par 4 – 328 yds
An appealing short par 4 to set you on your way, although do not underestimate this hole as it is a potential ‘card wrecker’. Keep the drive left and away from the canal, allowing a good angle into a narrow, undulating green. The pin position on the day is key to how you approach this hole.
With this hole sloping left-to-right, a drive up the left of the fairway should allow the ball to run down to the right. Better players may choose to draw the tee shot to counter the slope. The green again slopes from left-to-right as you approach it. A shot aimed at the left edge of the green is safe, although beware it may leave you a treacherous downhill slider?
A true ‘Risk Reward’ tee shot! The better player may choose to cut the corner, but must be mindful that trouble lurks left of the hedges. The smartest play is to aim just to the right of the marker post, allowing an open second shot to the green, which slopes away from you. A difficult approach shot to keep on the green with bunkers left and right!
COURSE TOUR
7
Hole 4 – Par 4 – 344 yds
Hole 5 – Par 4 – 381 yds
A potential birdie hole for all standards. The ideal tee shot is up the middle of the fairway between the two plantations leaving a short approach to a big green. The bigger hitter may be tempted to have a go at the green from the tee.
And so begins ‘Cerney’s Amen Corner’, a stretch of 3 holes that have wrecked many a player’s card after a promising start. A tactical drive is needed due to the lake, which protrudes into the fairway. A straightforward approach to an inviting green sets up a good par chance... providing the lake has not been visited!
Hole 6 – Par 3 – 186 yds
Hole 7 – Par 4 – 434 yds
The first of five par 3s. Measuring over 180 yards, a lot of club is needed to reach this narrow green. Be mindful of the pin position on this green; hitting the target on this hole will not guarantee you a par! The green is guarded by two bunkers left and right and out-of-bounds borders the hole on the right side. A par here definitely feels like a birdie!
A long par 4 to finish this stretch of tricky holes! A right dog-leg hole, which generally plays into the teeth of the wind. The smart play is to drive to the marker post leaving a wood/long iron to an inviting green guarded by a bunker on the left side. The bigger hitter may choose to drive over the corner of the dog-leg leaving themselves a mid/short iron into the green.
8
COURSE TOUR
Hole 8 – Par 3 – 187 yds
Hole 9 – Par 5 – 543 yds
Another par 3 measuring over 180 yards. Although wider than the previous par 3, danger lurks around this green from every angle. With two grass bunkers placed short of the green, bunkers on each side of the green and also a hedge behind the green, club selection is crucial and only a well struck shot will find the green.
What a spectacular hole to finish the front 9! Measuring nearly 550 yards, it’s a big ask to reach this green in 2 shots, and with out-of-bounds markers lining the right side of this hole from tee to green, it plays as a proper par 5. The key to this hole is simply to keep the ball left and in play, and golfers of all abilities should play this hole as a 3 shot par 5... par is a definite achievement!
Hole 10 – Par 3 – 171 yds
Hole 11 – Par 4 – 448 yds
A tricky par 3 to begin the back 9. Measuring over 170 yards, a lot of club is needed for golfers of all standards and club selection is crucial because of the long, 3 tiered green. Bunkers guard left and right and if this green is missed with the tee shot, it makes the up-and-down to par a difficult chore!
Another long par 4 to challenge golfers of all abilities. With a blind tee shot and out-ofbounds lining the left hand side of the hole, the marker post is the ideal line. The second shot is played through the hedges left and right of the fairway, to a large, inviting green. Be mindful, if the flag is on the back tier, not to be suckered into attacking the pin... a slight misjudgement in club selection could leave you an almost impossible chip shot!
COURSE TOUR
9
Hole 12 – Par 4 – 328 yds
Hole 13 - Par 4 - 390 yds
Another definite ‘Risk-reward’ tee shot; as many high scores have been made on this hole as low ones! The left edge of the bunker on the right of the fairway is the ideal line for the tee shot with ample room right. Those golfers full of confidence may attempt to drive the green from the tee, but be aware that out-of-bounds markers line this hole on the left hand side. This green is also guarded by two bunkers left and right. Up and down for birdie/par is not always a foregone conclusion! When putting on this green take extra care - subtle breaks cover this green... I advise a second look!
Generally into the wind, from both the back and forward tees, this is another long par 4! The ideal tee shot is to play between the two bunkers which line the fairway. The bigger hitters will be looking to reach the top level of the fairway. The second shot can be played with any club, from a long iron to a wedge, depending on the wind, but be mindful to take enough club as it is deceptively uphill... although not too much as there is a hedge that lines the back of the green!
Hole 14 – Par 4 – 448 yds The hardest hole on the golf course for more than one reason. Firstly the length, measuring nearly 450 yards, the ideal tee shot is to be played between the hedges or over the corner of the left hand side, depending on the golfers ability. This leaves a long second shot, with anything from a wood to a mid iron, depending on the wind direction. Secondly the green; another narrow target guarded by bunkers left and right, and long in length, so a two putt is by no means guaranteed and the club selection is crucial! Another green full of subtle breaks, so a 2nd look is always advised!
10
COURSE TOUR
Hole 15 – Par 3 – 158 yds
Hole 16 – Par 5 - 472 yds
From the hardest hole to the easiest... although some would argue this point. Although the shortest of the par 3s, it still measures over 150 yards. At least a mid iron is needed to reach the green, with bunkers on the left and right, and more importantly a bunker 20 yards short. Only a well struck golf shot will make this green and allow a 2 putt par!
A definite chance to pick up some shots on this reachable par 5 and a chance to lose them as well! A drive through the two hedges onto a weaving fairway is ideal. The decision then presents itself whether to lay up or take on the lake that covers the fairway... there is no bail out area, so the decision must be made? The bigger hitters will be able to reach the green in two shots, setting up a definite birdie chance... or better.
Hole 17 – Par 3 – 211 yds
Hole 18 – Par 5 – 492 yds
As you head for home, in front of you is a 200 yard par 3 with a bunker left of the green and a long bunker short of the green to catch those who attempt to run the ball onto the green. This hole plays difficult because of the length and having to use a wood/long iron, the ball must fly almost all the way to the target. A real tough final par 3!
A long finish to the round! A par 5, reachable in two for the bigger hitters, depending on the wind direction. A fairly straight forward hole as long as you find the fairway. A good tip is to aim for the white house you see in the distance. Ensure you do not flirt with the trees in the middle of the fairway with your second shot and this will leave you a simple chip to an inviting green. Be aware this green may seem at first glance to be shaped like a bowl, but as before it has some subtle breaks that at first glance, are not always visible.
