Welcome
Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club prides itself on being an active, allyear-round club with one of the best clubhouses on the south coast. Our bright, modern clubhouse, which we opened in 2006, is the base for our active racing, cruising and social programmes, and we enjoy a wide range of events throughout the year. Located at the eastern end of Eastbourne’s famous promenade, Sovereign Harbour is one of the largest and most stunning marinas in northern Europe. Excellent visitor facilities, berthing for nearly 1,000 boats and 24/7 access make Sovereign Harbour a popular port of call for yachtsmen. The Royal Sovereign Suite on the top floor of the Club, for private functions and conferencing. With stunning harbour views and ample free parking, it is the ideal venue for any event. Whether a prospective member or a visiting yachtsman, you will find Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club to be a friendly club. We extend a warm welcome to visitors from the UK and the continent alike.

Club History
Sovereign Harbour, originally known as The Crumbles, was built by developers Carillion and opened in 1993. In those early days the harbour was not quite the enchanting or well-appointed location to be found today, with the thoughts of a yacht club and accompanying purposebuilt facilities little more than a distant dream. However, the early boat-owners had several things in common, among them sharing a love of the water and for having a good time in the company of like-minded individuals. One such person was John Males, who formed “the berth holders”, a group who held their first meeting in the Boat House. The lack of a clubhouse proved nothing more than a small hindrance rather than an insurmountable obstacle and as a group they had many an evening with parties and barbecues and singing late into the night outside and inside the shower block. After this, John instigated the first Yacht Club – finding the building and raising the money from other boat owners – and spending many hours putting it together with other volunteers; painting and decorating, and running the Galley before handing it over to a franchise. John was the first commodore, for 18 months, and then President, supported by his wife Maureen. Then, just as now, it was club to be proud of.

Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club moved into its first clubhouse in 1997. The old clubhouse, a group of portable buildings, was purchased by the founders of the club. This, together with the active encouragement of Sovereign Harbour Marina Ltd (SHM), who leased a plot of ground for a peppercorn rent, enabled the members to erect and furnish the building on its former site east of the main harbour. In 2001 we were required to move (buildings and all) close to our present site in the North Harbour where we improved and extended the club buildings. With the support of SHM, negotiations for a permanent home were successfully concluded in December 2004 and, after obtaining detailed planning permission for a purpose-built facility, we took up occupation of the new building to coincide with hosting the Sussex Regatta in April 2006.

SHYC – the Club Today
Today, SHYC is a thriving yacht club. Our smart clubhouse, one of the best facilities on the south coast, serves the needs of our diverse membership as well as providing a much-needed social club for harbour residents. With air-conditioned bars, large picture windows and extensive sunny balconies on both the first and second floors, the clubhouse provides fantastic views over the North Harbour and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the marina. The contemporary design provides three floors comprising: • Ground floor – main entrance and berth holders’ facilities • 1st floor – club room and bar incorporating a small training/conference room • 2nd floor – main function and conference suite and toilets, including disabled facilities. We are proud of our clubhouse and prouder still of our reputation as a thriving, active and friendly club.

Visitors and Guests
Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club extends a warm welcome to members, their guests and visiting yachtsmen. The yacht club is located in the North Harbour adjacent to the lift-out hoist – directly facing the Waterfront car park and just a five-minute walk from the visitor pontoons. Sailors visiting the marina are encouraged to make full use of our clubhouse and join in with our various social, cruising and racing activities. Simply sign the visitors’ book inside the Flag Room and then come and say hello at the bar where you will invariably find a friendly face to talk to. We have free Wi-Fi available for use by visitors. Members can sign in up to four guests at any one time and each guest may come in up to six times per year. More frequent visitors will be invited to join in their own right. We are a family-friendly club and well-behaved children are always welcome, though we regret that pets are not permitted in the clubhouse. The sailing community is naturally a very friendly fraternity and we are confident the reception you receive at Sovereign Harbour will be as genuine and warm as you will find at any yacht club anywhere.

Bar and Galley
Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club is a fantastic venue for eating, drinking and socialising. With superb views across the North Harbour from the air-conditioned clubhouse and its sunny balconies, there is no better place to relax and soak up the sights, sounds and atmosphere of this amazing marina. We have a well-stocked bar with an extensive range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, all served with a smile by our bar staff. It is open every evening Tuesday-Thursday and from midday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In the galley we serve excellent quality food at very reasonable prices. There is a Sunday Carvery, themed food nights and, during the summer, frequent barbecues on the balcony. Our Sunday carvery is very popular and we recommend booking a table. The menu features a choice of succulent roasts and all the trimmings, followed by tempting desserts. Good food and good company enjoyed in the most wonderful of settings is an enticing combination that proves difficult to resist. Ahoy! our monthly newsletter, club noticeboards and our website all have details of forthcoming food nights and other special culinary events. To enable us to plan the catering, tables in the galley should be booked in advance in person at the bar, or simply by phoning the club. For further information about the bar and galley please call 01323 470888.

Becoming a Member
Membership of Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club is open to anyone whether you have an interest in water sports including sailing, power boating or diving, or are just looking for somewhere different to socialize on the harbor. You do not have to be a boat owner to join the club as social members are very welcome. Anyone interested in getting out on the water is encouraged to join as there are usually boat owning members looking for extra crew for racing or cruising. The Club is keen to attract new members. We hold Open Days at various times throughout the year, advertised around the harbour and in local newsletters, but anyone who is interested in becoming a member is welcome to drop in at any time to look around and have a friendly chat. Our membership rates are highly competitive at £90p.a. for full membership and £60p.a. for social membership. As well as having active sailing, racing and social programmes, SHYC members benefit from use of the superb clubhouse facilities, with delightful views and an excellent members bar Our members also benefit from a range of discounts negotiated with local companies. We offer full membership to anyone who is a boat owner or is associated with a boat as regular crew and offer social membership to members who are not directly associated with boating but wish to enjoy the Club’s lively social side. All members have access to the same great facilities and are welcome to attend the club’s Annual General Meeting in November, but you do need to be a full member to vote on policy matters. You also need to be a full member to hold office on the Club’s Board. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact the Membership Secretary at membership@shyc.co.uk or complete the appropriate application form which can be found on our website: www.shyc.co.uk.

Sovereign Harbour Marina
Sovereign Harbour comprises five harbours that together provide more than 800 marina berths and make up the UK’s largest composite marina. The inner basins are entered via one of two 24-hour high-capacity locks and along with floating pontoons, these locks make access to the marina easy - even for the novice boater. Sovereign Harbour’s outstanding location on the Sussex coastline also offers easy cruising along the south coast - east to the Kentish coastal ports - and west to Brighton Marina and the delights of the Solent. We are also a great starting point for crossing the English Channel to France, Holland or Belgium. On shore, Sovereign Harbour offers superb marina facilities and a professional team of staff is on hand 24 hours a day to assist boat owners. In fact, Sovereign Harbour’s first-class facilities and customer service have earned the marina the prestigious Yacht Harbour Association’s Five Gold Anchor award, as well as the Royal Yachting Association’s Berth Holders’ Charter. As well as SHYC’s own wonderful and welcoming clubhouse, why not explore ‘The Waterfront’ with its cosmopolitan mix of bars, restaurants and cafés which add to the laid-back atmosphere. Here you can take time to enjoy a meal on the quayside or just relax and watch the world go by.
18 | www.shyc.co.uk
Just moments away from the marina, you’ll find a retail park with an ASDA, a good mix of high street retailers and a multiplex cinema. A little further away still there’s the Victorian seaside town of Eastbourne. CCTV cameras add to the reassuring 24-hour on-site security at the marina. Berthing accommodation is first-class too with quality floating pontoons designed for maximum stability and safety; these pontoons can cater for vessels up to 24m in length. Sovereign Harbour offers one of the best-equipped fully-serviced boatyards on the south coast with lifting facilities that include the use of an Italian Ascom Travel-lift that’s capable of lifting up to 50 tonnes with a maximum beam of 5.7m. The lift also supports a 2-tonne crane that is ideal for engine lifts or mast work. The boatyard with its professional team operates throughout the year providing lift, high pressure wash hull cleaning, mast removal/stepping and engine lift services.

Cruising in Company
Every season SHYC looks to provide an exciting cruising calendar with something for everyone – from short weekend breaks and long spring/ summer holidays, travelling across the Channel and down to the West Country, to familiar destinations and new ports. Some of our members undertake challenging cruises but the emphasis is on enjoyment making many local trips, enabling as many boats as possible to feel comfortable about each voyage. We particularly welcome any new boats that have not cruised with us before and invite them to join in with the familiar faces. It only takes one voyage with the cruising section to realise what a friendly bunch our members are and having been out with us once we guarantee you will want to spend all of your spare time on the water in good company and visiting destinations of interest. Skippers’ meetings are always held to provide as much information as possible to help us cruise together, and we also hold ‘crew-meetskippers’ events for members looking for crew places and skippers looking for extra hands on deck. We want to deliver a programme that pleases as many members as possible and always welcome ideas and suggestions for members about how this popular section of the club can be made even more enjoyable.

Racing
Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club is able to offer its keen sailing membership an active all-year round programme of racing. SHYC is a prime hosts for the Sussex Regatta (Easter 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2012) and actively supports both the RNLI and Beneteau Regattas each summer. Members travel to support other regattas and races; for example Royal Escape a single day race in May from Brighton’s palace pier to Fecamp in Normandy, Cowes Week and Ramsgate Week – generally in early August and various national Championships. For the hardy souls who enjoy racing whatever the weather or the air temperature, the Club racing year starts in early January with the aptlynamed Frostbite series. This is traditionally a six-race series run every other Sunday morning, with boats counting their four best results to determine the overall win. There are two Spring series, featuring eight races of differing lengths from five to 20 miles, with again the keen sailors who have contested every race being able to discard their worst results. With longer days those who enjoy their time on the water can continue racing throughout the summer with some especially relaxing Wednesday evening series to chase away the midweek blues, and you don’t need to worry that you might not be able to complete a full series as three series allow you to fit in your annual holiday around the Race Calendar! With two competitive winter series taking place from early September to mid-December, you will see there truly is racing throughout the year and this culminates in the Boxing Day Rum Race, where yes, you have guessed it, the prize is a ....bottle of rum to warm you up after that

refreshing jaunt on the sea.
A good many Club boats take part in the Round the Island race out of Cowes at the end of June, and SHYC’s own regatta, run in conjunction with the RNLI is a particular highlight of the year at the end of August. More recently our yachts are taking part in Regattas in France and the RORC Fastnet race and getting very good results Then there is the offshore series, which rewards the best performing yacht in the major races we attend at home and abroad during the course of the season. Trophies are awarded for all these series and are presented at one of the Club’s two prize- giving evenings in October or the Spring and the silverware may be taken home by the victors or continue to grace the club Trophy cabinet. Our wonderful sailing tradition and team GB’s success in the recent Olympic Games sailing, held down in Weymouth and Portland, has seen an upsurge in the popularity of our sport and is something that will continue to grow being the island nation that we are. Having seen, either in person, or on the television, what an exhilarating sport sailing can be more and more people want to have a go themselves. We might not all have the natural talent, drive or determination to become the next Ben Ainslie, but the sport welcomes all ages and abilities and if you do not have a craft yourself, there are always other skippers looking for crew. The beauty about sailing is that you can be competitive whatever your boat, because the handicap system we use to determine our winners gives everyone a chance of glory on a particular day, depending on the

Racing Continued
strength of the wind, the water conditions and, of course, their own natural ability A broad range of boats in length, weight and age make up the two classes of races that compete for over a dozen cups and awards each year. The larger and keener racers compete under the IRC flag, with a second class of Club handicapped competitors, CPI (club performance indicator), for those who like the idea of competition but not at the cost of expensive rigging and measuring. Both classes actively encourage new members to participate, so there is an opportunity to experience all the skills required for sailing, or simply find your niche. You don’t necessarily have to be very young or supremely fit and the beauty of sailing a yacht is that, unlike a dinghy, it doesn’t capsize. If you love the sea but don’t want to go on it, don’t let that stop you. You are always welcome to join the Race Officer on the start line on Sunday morning at 10am most weeks down near the sewage works on the seafront, or join us all in the bar after racing and hear us congratulate or commiserate with each other.

The Sussex Regatta and Sussex Championship
The Sussex Regatta was started a few years ago as a way to improve the standard of yacht racing in Sussex by promoting better competition. It was originally run by the three main yacht clubs in central Sussex – the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club, Sussex Yacht Club and Brighton Marina Yacht Club, with Arun Yacht Club joining the organising committee in 2011. At first each club was left alone to organise whatever sort of regatta they preferred. But since 2005 there has been increasing co-operation between the clubs to share resources, expertise and to improve the standard of racing. There is now a standing organising committee with representatives from all the clubs. The site of the regatta rotates between the participating clubs, with SHYC proud host of the event in 2012. Open to everyone from any of the yacht clubs in Sussex, from Chichester to Rye, the regatta is usually held over the Easter Weekend so is one of the first major meetings of the year.

In 2007 the Sussex Combined Clubs Handicap (SCCH) system was started which is now used by the clubs in their open events, the Sussex Regatta and the Royal Escape Race. The Sussex Championship had been decided on the outcome of a single event, the Sussex Regatta. But in 2010 the Sussex Combined Clubs Committee agreed to extend the scope of the Championship, which is now decided on a series of qualifying events and has become known as the Sussex Challenge Series. It now consists of a series of regattas - the Sussex Regatta, plus the individual regattas of the four member yacht clubs. Using a high point-scoring system, with results in the Sussex Regatta counting double, prizes are awarded to the boats that perform best over the whole series of regattas in both IRC and SCCH (PY) classes. In addition a prize is awarded to the club performing best overall.

Saturday Sailing
Saturday Sailing is a new initiative to Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club that offers the chance for novice and improver sailors to become involved in crewing on racing boats. We take people with a variety of experience and offer a gradual introduction to yacht racing with our experienced fleet of skippers and crew over five Saturday mornings. Much of the course is land-based – in our fabulous yacht club clubhouse – with the emphasis on covering the essential areas of theory such as tying knots, packing spinnakers, race start procedures, racing rules, names of items on the boats and much more besides. At the end of each session there will also be the opportunity for each attendee to get out on the water on board some of the fastest local yachts to practise some of the basic sailing and racing techniques covered during the course. Saturday Sailing sessions are provided by volunteers who receive no payment for their involvement. Saturday Sailing is not an ‘official’ training course, it is designed to provide an introduction to inshore yacht racing and an appreciation of the basic skills required to crew on a racing yacht. Lifejackets are provided, but you need to come prepared to be outside for a couple of hours. Waterproofs are essential, as are sailing gloves, and it may also be beneficial to bring a change of clothes as well.

Social Events
There is a very active social side to the yacht club, with several events every month catering for all tastes - live bands and discos, quiz nights, karaoke and the occasional talk of local interest. Those with a passion for a good time should boogie on down to the Club on a weekend when we often have a party with a live band or disco every month. Our regular events include quiz nights, which take place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, and a Ladies Lunch.once a month. There’s also a superb calendar of traditional yacht club social events from the Fitting Out to Laying Up Suppers, Burns’ Night, Commodore’s Sail Past, Trafalgar Supper, Christmas Lunch, and New Year’s Eve party. Where else can you enjoy such a varied and lively social scene at the harbour? And remember, many of these events are free of charge to Club members. The social programme is published every month on the Club’s website and Club noticeboards. Also look out for updates on forthcoming events and activities in Ahoy!, the club’s monthly newsletter.

The following courses are offered: • Day Skipper RYA Theory Course • Yachtmaster RYA Theory Course • Basic Navigation & Safety (Shorebased) • Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore (Shorebased) In addition, the club runs a range of practical one-day courses which include: • Diesel Engine • First Aid • Marine Radio Short Range Certificate • Radar Besides these formal courses, arrangements can be made through the club to meet specific practical training needs, including coaching for the Yachtmaster practical exam and ladies-only sailing days.
34 | www.shyc.co.uk
A growing number of countries require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) to be held by skippers, sailing in their territorial and inland waters. The Club is authorised to carry out the necessary test procedure for those who need it, and can arrange a short session of pretest tuition if required. SHYC is keen to promote high standards of safety at sea. This aim is pursued, both by raising personal skill levels under the RYA Training Scheme, and also by co-operation with the Sovereign Harbour BerthHolders Association and the Eastbourne RNLI Water Safety Team, staging safety events in the Harbour to focus on particular issues, such as flares, lifejackets, and life-rafts. For dates of upcoming courses, please visit our website: www.shyc.co.uk/safetyandtraining.

With ample free parking and great transport links SHYC is the perfect place for your special event out on the water. We can provide either a gentle cruise around the bay of Eastbourne including a sail past the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse or something a little more energetic with a competitive edge: With a minimum of 16 guests we can provide two yachts. Each corporate day will be tailored to your specific needs, but a typical day, depending on the weather, would consist of: 08.30 Arrival at Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club for breakfast and safety briefing 09.30 Out to sea in the yachts for some training on both sailing and racing techniques 12.30 Lunch served on the yachts whilst at anchor in the bay. During the lunchtime break your guests could have the option to sample the thrill of a fast ride in either a rib or Zap Cat 14.00 Time to put into practice the lessons learnt in the morning with some friendly but competitive racing between the yachts 15.30 Return to the yacht club for refreshments, prize giving and dinner enjoying the views from the Club House balcony. Christmas Parties
We appreciate times have become increasingly challenging for businesses with the downturn in the economic climate in recent years. Staff are working even harder than before, sometimes filling more than one role and it can be easy to forget to say thank you for their efforts. Christmas parties are an excellent way of giving something back to the workforce and are also a superb way of building staff morale. With free ample parking and easy access, the Royal Sovereign Suite is the ideal venue to hold your Christmas party. For one very reasonable price your party night package can include: • Four-course menu • Disco • Festive napkins • Christmas crackers • Festively-decorated venue • Venue available from 7pm to midnight • Sit-down meal from 7.30pm • DJ throughout the evening You can hire out the venue for a minimum booking of 60 quests, or share the evening with like-minded companies and maybe make some new friends. If an evening sit-down meal is not to your liking, how about a Christmas buffet or Christmas lunch? Please contact us on 01323 470888 or enquiries@shyc.co.uk for further information.
