Surbiton Golf Club provides a wonderful blend of modern golfing and all the benefits of a Private Members’ Club. That’s one of the reasons why we have Golfmark status – a clear indication of our inclusive approach.
With a heritage stretching back to 1895, you’d expect Surbiton to have some history. We’re particularly proud that Ryder Cup-winning Captain Dai Rees learnt his trade as an Assistant at Surbiton and that Sir Sydney Camm, who designed the Hawker Hurricane Fighter – the first RAF aircraft to top 300 mph – was one of our members.
Our course – one of the best presented in Surrey - has been evolving and adapting to golf technology, and the needs of golfers, since 1895. The original course comprised nine holes and was designed by local Professional, Tom Dunn - a prolific designer of the late Victorian era. Dunn designed some 137 courses in Great Britain including: Broadstone, Lindrick and Ganton, the latter designed in conjunction with Harry Varden.
As a result, the 6,056-yard (par 70) course offers a surprising test - with narrow fairways, small greens, plenty of mature trees and changes in elevation. Members
love it because every round feels like a different golfing experience.
Our impressive clubhouse has excellent facilities including the main bar, restaurant and 19th, where social and business functions take place throughout the year.
Our professional and friendly team work hard at ensuring members, visitors and guests are given an experience to remember on every visit.
SURBITON GOLF CLUB 5 WELCOME
The opening shot was struck on Saturday, 18th May 1895, unfortunately it is not recorded who had that honour although it was likely to be either Mr. A.H. Lisner or Mr. Bulmer Howell. Lisner should rightly be regarded the founding father of what is now The Surbiton Golf Club. It was Lisner, as the lessee of the Waffrons and its farmland, who placed an advertisement in the Surrey Comet asking for golfers and prospective players to attend a meeting on Friday, 29th March 1895 at the Southampton Hotel, in Surbiton, in order to form a Golf Club.
The meeting was presided over by Bulmer Howell, who subsequently became the Club’s first Captain, a position held until 1899.
That a Club could be formed and a course laid out in six weeks appears unthinkable by today’s standards. However, there is some evidence that preparations had been made some years earlier. A bank account, for whatever may have been the Club’s predecessor, was opened at the Westminster Bank in Surbiton in 1892, where it remains to this day.
The fact that the course was playable so soon may have been due in part to the likelihood that the Richie family who occupied the Waffrons, laid out a rudimentary course for their two sons. The official opening of The Waffrons Golf Club, as it was originally known, took place on Saturday, 8th June 1895 when an 18 hole competition was won by James Wild with a net score of 78.
6 SURBITON GOLF CLUB
HISTORY
The first surviving record of an official competition at the Club is in Golf magazine of 8th November 1895. It details the results of the Autumn Meeting held on Saturday, 26th October.
The original course comprised nine holes and was designed by local Professional, Tom Dunn. His golfing life started as the Professional at London Scottish Golf Club on Wimbledon Common in 1869 before moving to North Berwick in 1881 and finally to Tooting Bec in 1889.
Dunn was a prolific designer of the late Victorian era being involved in some 137 courses in Great Britain. Unfortunately, many of his local courses such as Raynes Park and Walton on Thames no longer exist. Three of his designs, in particular, remain as examples of his undoubted expertise, Broadstone, Lindrick and Ganton, the latter designed in conjunction with Harry Varden.
So there it is - the history of a Club; founded in a pub in Surbiton, playing on a course designed by one of the foremost golf architects, served by only eight professionals during its first hundred years and saved from extinction by the tenacity and hard work of those who went before us.

Surbiton offers a surprising test - with narrow fairways, small greens, plenty of mature trees and changes in elevation. Members love it because every round feels like a different golfing experience.
Our Greens committee and greens staff set-up the course so it can be enjoyed by golfers of all ages and skill levels. Challenges are strategically placed for low handicappers and a more forgiving setup can be enjoyed by shorter hitters. Although designed in 1895, the course also suits people who may be tight on time. We have 4-hole, 8-hole and 10-hole
loops so you can pick and choose how long you want to be on the course.
The toughest hole on the course is the par4 6th. At 373-yards it is not a difficult hole to reach but a straight drive is imperative. The real difficulty lies with the second shot as towards the green the fairway narrows, with the added hazards of a bunker to the left, another large bunker to the right, and a third positioned on the front left of the green. Assuming the first two bunkers are safely circumvented, there is still the challenge of getting up on to the upper tier of this elevated green.
Our signature hole is the challenging par4 18th. A right-hand dog-leg with mature trees and out of bounds lining the right side requires a steely nerve on the tee. Your second shot offers a picturesque view of the large green, shared with the 8th, with the clubhouse behind, offering a superb backdrop.
As part of our continuous course investment we are lengthening three holes. The most eye-catching will be the 572 yard 14th. The drive from the new elevated tees will be through a corridor of mature oaks. It is a hole that is sure to stay long in the memory when you play it.
SURBITON GOLF CLUB 9 ABOUT THE COURSE
If you have not had the opportunity to play at Surbiton Golf Club before, you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the challenges that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 1 - Ten Acre, 401 yards, par 4
A drive favouring the right half of the fairway, while taking care not to end up in the strategically placed bunker on the right side of the fairway, will set up a second shot into the largish, flatish, circular green which is guarded in front by two bunkers on the left and right sides. There are several mature conifers to the
right and out of bounds is a matter of yards from the back.
Hole 2 - The Gate, 314 yards, par 4
With most of the front left side of the green guarded by a large bunker, a drive down the right centre of the fairway (avoiding the bunker on the right) will provide the best route in for your second shot to this largish circular green with a raised tier in the back right quarter. Out of bounds looms close to the back and to the left.
Hole 3 - Castle View, 406 yards, par 4
Straight and long is the objective from this tee. It is unlikely, other than for
the very longest of hitters, that you will be able to see the green for your second shot as it lies at the bottom of a downward slope. A bunker catches long drives to the left and another in the right centre catches shorter drives to the right. A white disc marker, above and behind the green, indicates the centre line of the green, however anything landing short will usually be moved from right to left by the slope.
Be warned though that anything more than a few feet through the two tiered green will, more often than not, result in a lost ball and that dreaded walk back to replay.
10 SURBITON GOLF CLUB
COURSE TOUR
Hole 4 – Willows, 180 yards, par 3
Trees left and right, a ditch (lateral water hazard) along the left, ground sloping from left to right on the right side and bunkers surrounding the green all make for an intimidating tee shot.
Hole 5 – Waffrons, 402 yards, par 4
Having taken in arguably the finest view on the course, your drive should favour the right side of the fairway. Anything centre, or left thereof, will invariably roll into the left hand rough, making your second shot to the green, which is guarded by a bunker on the left, a rather difficult shot to play.
Hole 6 - James Braid, 373 yards, par 4
Down the middle from the tee to a quite wide and flat fairway is the target. The real difficulty lies with the second shot as towards the green the fairway narrows, with the added hazards of a bunker to the left about 110 yards from the green, another large bunker to the right about 20 yards or so nearer in, and a third positioned on the front left of the green. Assuming the first two bunkers are safely circumvented, there is still the challenge of getting up on to the upper tier, where the pin is regularly placed, of this elevated green.
Hole 7 - The Slopes, 343 yards, par 4
From an elevated plateau tee you will be all too conscious of a dense wood (out of bounds), fronted by a ditch (lateral water hazard), along the right hand side of the fairway. The ideal tee shot should be aimed to the right side of the fairway. Your approach shot has to be equally accurate to avoid the two greenside bunkers negotiate a narrow entrance to a slightly bowl-shaped green.
SURBITON GOLF CLUB 11
Hole 8 - Bridle Path, 404 yards, par 4
Considered to be the most intimidating hole at Surbiton. With mature trees close in to the left, out of bounds to the right and a thick hedge running obliquely right across in front of the fairway, a long straight drive, into a sloping left to right fairway, is called for if you are to reach the green in two.
Hole 9 – Crater, 268 yards, par 4
With an upwards sloping fairway, a slight dog leg from right to left, a small copse of conifers to the right and an old World War II wooded bomb crater to the left, an accurate, rather than a long drive, into the right half of the fairway is called for.
Hole 10 – Paddocks, 383 yards, par 4
From the tees the ground falls away gradually for about two thirds of the length of this hole, and a little from left to right. The green itself is pretty flat and long, with a small ridge circling the left and rear of it.
Hole 11 – Cottages, 184 yards, par 3
Uphill, all the way to the green from the tees. Either side of the sloping entrance to the green are large, high grassy mounds which taper down the sides to the rear of this oblong-shaped green.
Hole 12 - Windy Ridge, 506 yards, par 5
A long straight drive over a thick hedge crossing in front of a generously broad fairway, guarded left and right by fairway bunkers should set you up nicely for your second shot. Your third shot to the unseen green at the bottom of the reverse slope will be influenced by any wind and the ground conditions.
Hole 13 - The Glade, 128 yards, par 3
A straight tee shot to the heart of this largish, oblong-shaped green on this picturesque, almost completely tree encircled hole, will set you up nicely for a birdie opportunity.
12 SURBITON GOLF CLUB
COURSE TOUR CONTINUED
Hole 14 – Claygate, 572 yards, par 5
Avoid the out of bounds all along the right side and the three fairway bunkers, all visible from the tee, and the second shots are relatively straight forward. Your approach shot to the green, should be aimed to the front left of the green, allowing for the left to right incline down to the green, which itself also slopes left to right.
Hole 15 - Mount Ararat, 142 yards, par 3
From the tee the ground rises quickly and steeply to the plateau green, with a bunker guarding the front right half.
Hole 16 - Telegraph View, 425 yards, par 4
A longish well-directed drive ideally left of centre, to compensate for the fairway’s slope and keeping clear of the out of bounds on the right, should be the aim here. Your second shot needs to carry a large clover leaf-shaped bunker, in the middle of the fairway, about 100 yards from the green.
Hole 17 - The Moat, 281 yards, par 4
A bank of mature trees crossing in front of the fairway which tilts from left to right over the greater part of its length makes accuracy of the tee the priority. The front right half of the kidney shaped
green is guarded by a large bunker which draws balls unerringly to its heart so only the bravest will take on a right hand pin placement directly.
Hole 18 – Periscope, 447 yards, par 4
Arguably the hardest hole on the course, a right hand dog-leg with mature trees and out of bounds lining the right side requires a steely nerve on the tee, as going left adds extra distance to your second shot.
