Welcome to Wenvoe Castle Golf Club

envoe Castle Golf Club is a members club that warmly welcomes new members, visitors and societies.

The golf club was formed in 1936 and laid out by James Braid the distinguished course architect and five times Open winner. The 6514 yard, Par 72 parkland course is recognised as one of the best challenges of golf in Wales. and comprises two loops of nine holes which start and end near the Clubhouse, a magnificent 18th Century Mansion designed by Robert Adams on the site of a former castle.

The first nine holes provide spectacular views across the Bristol Channel and neighbouring countryside while the second nine are attractively tree lined but carefully phased planting has ensured an interesting challenge. The course provides a challenging mix of holes, each separate and with their own character, and the tricky slopes and subtle borrows make for a very enjoyable test for golfers of all abilities. The attractiveness and quality of the course has attracted more and more players in recent years, with many members achieving golfing honours at the highest level. The club has hosted major National and County Championships and was the venue for the

first Welsh Classic in 1979 which attracted many of the top European golfers and won by Ryder Cup Captain Mark James.

The elegant and charming Grade 2 Listed Clubhouse provides a relaxing place to wind down and enjoy the impressive bar and catering facilities particularly the external patio offering panoramic views over the course and the pro-shop is not to be missed. Whether you are a guest of a member, a visiting golfer, a member of a society or attending a company day we trust this course planner will prove to be a valuable source of information and help in the enjoyment of this delightful and challenging parkland course.

History of Wenvoe Castle Golf Club

he current clubhouse is on the site of a former castle which was built in the early 1700’s. There is still speculation that a Wenvoe Castle known to exist in the mid 1500’s was its predecessor and reputed to have been burned down by Owain Glyndwr, a potent Welsh nationalist who led the rebellion against the occupying English forces at that time.

The buildings and land forming the golf course were owned by the Thomas family who accumulated wealth and significant influence as they gradually passed from affluence to extravagance fuelled by a desire to be both Members of Parliament and Landscapers on a grand scale. It is possible that at that time the early seeds of

a golf course were beginning to emerge with records showing the area of the front nine holes was known as ‘The Gathers’ and the back nine aptly called ‘The Lawns’.

The Thomas family eventually paid the price for their extravagant lifestyle and in 1774 were forced to sell land and property and Wenvoe Castle passed into the hands of Peter Birt who made his personal fortune from coal and canals in Yorkshire. Mr Birt immediately set about dismantling the buildings on the site rebuilding in its place a mansion house with castellated battlements with front of the new ‘castle’ measuring some 374 feet long. This was the only Mansion House built in Wales that

was designed by Robert Adams and the accompanying picture illustrates a grand and imposing building. The Birt family married into the Jenner family who later became involved in the creation of the golf course. However, In 1910 there was serious fire which destroyed almost all of the Birt-built Wenvoe Castle with only the East Pavilion, the Stables and Archway Tower remaining intact. These remaining buildings are still sufficient to provide the elegance and grace of a Country Mansion House and enjoy protection as a Grade 2 Listed Building. The buildings took on a new lease of life as a Club house when the golf course was opened in July 1936 by the Rev. Hugh Jenner the

Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first President and Benefactor over many years. James Braid a 5 times winner of the Open advised on the original layout and in later years C.K. Cotton, another top name in golf architecture, was brought in to advise on further modifications. Early records indicate the initial club membership was about 100, which included the Ladies, producing approximately ÂŁ66 in subscriptions. The 1936 PGA Handbook refers to Wenvoe Castle GC listing the Standard Scratch Score as 74 and the first club professional as Mr C.A. Pickett.

History of Wenvoe Castle Golf Club CONTINUED The outbreak of World War 2 had a dramatic effect on the golf course. The top floor of the club house was requisitioned and the back nine holes were ploughed up and commanded to produce cereals. By early 1941 club meetings were cancelled because of air raids and black outs and this fear was not without justification as bombs actually fell on the fifth fairway causing considerable damage.

After the war it took some considerable time to regain the land for golfing purposes and it was not until 1956 that the full 18 holes finally came back into play and by 1958 a water supply had been installed to every green.

Over the years improvements to the course have been carefully planned and implemented. A demanding layout has been developed through the planting of significant numbers of trees particularly on the back nine holes. Additional bunkers were strategically placed to supplement the natural hazards such as the lakes. The result demands good course management by the player and a stern but fair and enjoyable test of golf. Adjustment of the tees has enabled the length of the course to be maximised and the course has now been extended to championship standard of 6544 yards from the back tees. Many club members have achieved golfing honours at the highest level.

• Tegwen Matthews (Perkins) who was selected for the Curtis Cup side before being chosen as Captain of the team in 2012 and 2014. The victory in 2012 meant for the first time brought all four major trophies, The Ryder Cup, Solheim Trophy, Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup to Europe: the first time all of these were by European teams. • Sylvia Webster (nee Hales) is another former Welsh Ladies Champion, Welsh Ladies Team Captain and player and subsequently appointed selector for the Welsh Team and the British Team from 2007 t0 2010.

• Simon Cox, as an amateur, represented Wales on numerous occasions from 1970 to 1974 and on turning professional in 1975 he went on to win the Welsh Professional Championship in 1976 and 1983.

• Keith Stimpson has won the Welsh Seniors title and represented Wales in the Home Countries Championships. Keith was also part of the Club Team which won the Welsh Team Championships in 2007 thus repeating the success achieved by the Club in honours at the highest level, in 1977.

History of Wenvoe Castle Golf Club CONTINUED Wenvoe Castle is proud to have been chosen as the venue for the first Welsh Classic in 1979 which was introduced as part of the Professional European Golf Tour. The event included most of the top European golfers including Tony Jacklin, Nick Faldo, Brian Barnes, Bernhard Gallagher, Bob Charles, Christy Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor Jnr., Sandy Lyle, Mark James to name but a few. Even for the seasoned professionals the course proved to be a tough challenge and the eventual winner was Mark James who won in a three way play off after posting a score of only 6 under after four rounds. No doubt this achievement helped in some small way to his subsequent selection as Captain of the Great Britain and European Ryder Cup Team! The Club continues to be selected to host major Welsh Championships notably the Welsh

Boys Championships, the Welsh Ladies Team Championships and recently the Welsh Open Youth Championships in June 2018.

The Grade 2 Listed Clubhouse has also seen significant improvements reflecting its historical background. The Castle Suite function room is a popular and attractive venue for weddings and other social events. The Lounge and Bar together with a separate dining room have been tastefully refurbished and both the Ladies and Gentlemen Locker Rooms have also been completely renewed to provide first class facilities for members and visitors. The external patio offers impressive panoramic views over the course particularly any drama in the final stages of any competitions being played out on the nearby 18th green.

Course Tour – Pro’s Tips • Hole 1 Par 5 A great challenging tee shot from an elevated tee to a long Par 5. A sensible third shot is needed to an elevated green.

• Hole 2 Par 3 A challenging short Par 3 that requires accuracy to hit the centre of the green. Any tee shots wide of this face the risk of ending up in one of three testing bunkers. • Hole 3 Par 4 A lovely Par 4 that requires a good tee shot landing on the left of the spine of the fairway which sets up the ideal approach shot to the green that slopes from left to right.

• Hole 4 Par 4 A deceptive but challenging Par 4 depending on wind conditions and a second shot played from anywhere other than the fairway. The green is protected by two front bunkers.

• Hole 5 Par 5 A great undulating Par 5 if the player uses their shot sensibly keeping the ball in play aiming to avoid the valley on the left for their second shot. The approach to the green should be followed by a safe two putt.

• Hole 6 Par 4 A challenging tee shot from the white box as it is impossible to see the green. A straight shot will be rewarded by a fairway that is

wide and more accommodating then may be perceived from the tee. The second shot is played to a very small narrow green that slopes from front to back.

• Hole 7 Par 4 A strong drive off the tee is needed to meet the challenge of an uphill fairway followed by an extremely accurate shot to the smallest green on the course. Make a four here and be very happy. • Hole 8 Par 4 Both distance and accuracy are required for the tee shot to clear the valley and set up for the second shot. A bunker free hole still

asks you to meet the challenge of using the natural contours of the fairway to land safely on the green. • Hole 9 Par 3 A tough medium sized Par 3 surrounded by bunkers where trickery and challenge is found on an undulating green where a successful two putt is met with relief.

• Hole 10 Par4 This is considered to be the Club’s signature hole with a dogleg right as the green cannot be seen from the tee. An ideal tee shot will run left of centre toward the lake to reveal a tiered green surrounded by bunkers.

Course Tour – Pro’s Tips CONTINUED • Hole 11 Par 4 One of the toughest drives on the course on a dogleg running left andrequires a tee shot right of centre to maximize distance and position. The fun really starts with the second shot to the green as any putt from above the hole has ruined many a good score.

• Hole 12 Par 4 A seemingly innocent looking hole uphill away from the clubhouse is challenged by a potentially blind shot to an elevated green. • Hole 13 Par 5 A straight drive to the marker post leaves the player requiring a strong and straight shot past the fairway bunker setting up for

an accurate third shot to a sloping green that can punish a player finishing above the hole.

• Hole 14 Par 4 (pictured above) The only option is to hit the centre of the fairway which leaves the player with a greater chance of success on reaching the green in two. There is no hope of recovery of a shot through the green which is also protected each side by bunkers.

• Hole 15 Par 3 This is what club members consider to be the start of their “Amen Corner”. Both length and accuracy are required to hit a small green surrounded by bunkers on this final Par 3 hole.

Course Tour – Pro’s Tips CONTINUED • Hole 16 Par 4 Anyone driving over the ridge will benefit from a straight forward approach shot to the flattest green on the course. Two front bunkers and a large oak on the left guard the green. • Hole 17 Par 4 A dogleg left requires a long and accurate drive to the marker post that allows the player a chance of seeing the green. A shot of equal standard is needed to hit the green and finish with a straightforward two putt.

• Hole 18 Par 4 For the longer hitter a tee shot landing just right of and past the marker post will give a player additional distance from the downhill fairway. To all that have played the course the view of the majestic clubhouse as the background to the second shot to a well-guarded green is quite memorable.

He is currently instructing two groups of ladies in basic skills that are participating in the “New to Golf” programme.

Lessons take place outside on a practice area that has room for every club in the bag, a practice bunker to a green, a putting green and chipping area. An indoor practice area is available for lessons should the weather be inclement or for just a quick warm up before a game.

envoe Castle Golf Club offers a variety of membership categories and sections that suit all ages and standards. The process of joining is simple and you can choose a membership category which best suits you.

Our membership is incredibly broad in terms of age, golfing experience, cultural background and occupation. We are a traditional members club with a strong equal gender philosophy and whether you are male, female, new to golf, or a scratch player, everyone is welcome as a member.

Our full playing membership allows unlimited use of the course and our club house, the opportunity to enter club competitions and the chance to maintain an official handicap. Our Social membership is opportune for those who do not play golf but would benefit from our excellent bar and catering facilities as well as use of the function and meeting rooms.

The Country membership is specifically for members of another affiliated club who may wish to play the course on a regular basis but without the opportunity to play in the Club competitions.

If as a member you fancy an occasional change of scenery we have reciprocal golf with 8 other clubs in the Wales Golf Network and Wenvoe Castle is also a member of the Association of James Braid courses and provides an opportunity to play any of these kindred courses at discounted rates. We recognise the future of our great game is in the hands of our young golfers and offer discounted membership rates to younger players aged 18 t0 24 with even more attractive rates on offer for those aged 17 and under. There are also discounted fees for students in full time education.

Beginner players will also find we represent an ideal choice with coaching facilities and our talented PGA Professional, Jason Harris always on hand to offer instructions and support. Group sessions or individual lessons are arranged to help beginners and help with a transition to full playing membership.

There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire and at ‘Wenvoe Castle’ you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities. The Club can facilitate members who are competitive, and wish to play in a competition, as well as social

golfers who wish to round of golf or a number of holes with their friends. If you are the latter you will be made very welcome by our members and this is a great way of making new friends and familiarising yourself with the Club’s activities. We have an on line booking system for competitions but social golf can be played by turning up and simply teeing off when it is your turn. Simple and relaxing.

At Wenvoe Castle we extend a friendly welcome to all visitors whether it is the first time you have played our magnificent course or it encourages you to return as a regular green fee payer. Our PGA Club Professional will be on hand to extend a warm welcome and ensure you have all you need to enjoy your game. The majority of our guests play during the week and there is plenty of opportunity to play other than when tee times are

reserved for members or possibly societies or other visitors. The on line booking system will clearly show the availability and once booked your tee time is guaranteed for you and your colleagues. There are often discounts for on line bookings and usually represent good value on the day.

Alternatively, if you prefer, why not make a call to the Club Professional on 029 20594371 (option3) who will enable a booking to be made and confirmed. There is limited availability on the weekends where Club Competitions are played on Saturday and Sunday mornings but there is usually a good chance of a tee time on weekend afternoons after 2.00pm.

The Clubhouse

he 19th hole is well supported by club members and visitors alike. It is the centre of the social activities of the club and the well-stocked bar offers everything from teas and coffees to wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks.

The restaurant offers snacks, sandwiches and a variety of baked potatoes throughout the day and all dietary requirements are accommodated. The Golfers Bar includes Sky TV, a Âž size snooker table and dartboard. It is also used as a Spikes Bar giving the golfer the opportunity of walking into the clubhouse for a quick drink without having to change shoes.

envoe Castle Golf Club is located in the heart of picturesque Vale of Glamorgan but only a short distance from the M4 motorway on the outskirts of Cardiff.

• At Culverhouse Cross take the third exit signed Cardiff Airport and Barry and join Route A4050.

• Leave the M4 motorway at Junction 33 (Capel Llanillterne/ Cardiff West Services) following the signs to Cardiff Airport and Barry and join Route A4232.

• At the 4th roundabout the Style Garden Centre will be seen to the right.

Directions from Junction 33 on the M4:-

• On Route A4232 after 2 miles take the slip road leading to Culverhouse Cross again following the signs to A4050 Cardiff Airport and Barry.

• On Route A4050 continue straight ahead for two miles through 4 roundabouts which by pass the village of Wenvoe.

• Continue straight ahead on Route A4050 for approximately 100 metres and turn right into drive signposted to Wenvoe Castle Golf Club.
