Precedent Analysis

A study of the design and spa services at Amangiri + Spa Fasano Las Piedras

Amangiri Spa Canyon Point, Southern Utah

Amangiri, meaning ‘peaceful mountain’, is the collective effort of architects Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette, and Rick Joy. Nestled in the remote hills of Utah’s rugged landscape, the Amangiri Resort and Spa implements local Navajo wellness practices, blurs the line between interior and exterior, and adopts a naturally stepped architecture for a truly immersive experience

Site Materials

Like the cliffs that surround it, Amangiri’s planes are hued with ochre, yellow and pink that changes color with the sun and moon. Sandblasted, brushed and poured concrete Indian and white sand stone Moss laminar stone Walnut wood

Integration

Set in the heart of the Grand Circle, the largest concentration of national parks in the United States, Amangiri covers 600 acres of “wind water and stone The water hollowed the stone, the wind dispersed the water, the stone stopped the wind. Water and wind and stone... Octavio Paz

Wellness

The 25,000 square foot Spa aims to reflect the healing traditions of the Navajo through the four elements of earth, wind, fire and water,or ‘hozho’. Crystal salt and pink argiletz clay body scrub in the 7 treatment rooms. 1 yoga pavilion opens up to views and sounds of the Mesa. 3 outdoor saunas and 14 temperature controlled pools are integrated into the landscape offering floatation therapy and desert views. Vegan products are packaged in 100% recyclable materials.

Playing with Light

The geometric planes of Amangiri’s architecture and the Southwestern sun form a playful relationship that is expressed in the different light qualities. The small shafts also allow wind to blow through.

Spa Fasano LAS PIEDRAS PUNTA DEL ESTE, URUGUAY

Scattered amongst the rocky slope of La Barra, Isay Weinfeld’s Fasano Las Piedras is more of a random grouping of isolated modules and facilities than it is a conventional hotel and spa. The filtered light, natural materials, and raw aesthetic mimics the landscape’s sparse vegetation.

Site Materials

Local rock and stone were used to erect the walls of the module. The natural striations of the rock mimics the grain of the wood that is implemented as an accent finish on some of the interior walls.

Integration

As if they were rocks that had “landed naturally on the terrain, the buildings of the resort are scattered across the 480 hectare property in order to minimize their interference with the natural landscape.

Nature’s Energy

Designed to express the power of nature and the energy that comes from it, Fasano Las Piedras Spa is a center for serenity. The spa and hospitality complex is a single-story concrete rectangular volume, where 5 treatment rooms are placed in the perimeter leaving an open garden in the center of the building, around which all circulations evolve. With more than 20 massage and oil therapies, the spa is a proponent of ayurvedic treatments.

Transactional Space

Views to the rocky landscape were a major concern for the designers. Through the choice of materials and filtered light that comes in through the windows and skylights, guests feel immersed in nature.

Conclusion Both the Amangiri Spa in Utah and the Spa Fasano at Las Piedras demonstrate a strong integration into the natural landscape. Not only are the programs directly affected by their environment but the spas offer services and experiences that are unique to their site. Through the wellness centers and spas philosophies’ there is a strong focus on local remedies, traditions, rituals, and products. Materials are also locally sourced which represent a deep understanding of sustainability and the landscape. By way of its color, texture and finish both projects blend natural landscape and

Project Goals + Concept Model

Identification of project goals + Articulation of selected archetypes through model making

Goal Statements To offer clients immersive spa services that encourage sound mind, body and transcendental experiences It is the ultimate goal of the spa to create positive change in a client’s life by combining traditional Balinese services and the indigenous commuity’s knowledge with modern amenities and styles Dominant programmatic features include fluid floors, a yoga pavilion, gardens, a tea room, and ocean views. Auxiliary structures are a crucial aspect of the project because of the limited square footage in main house With proximity to the Atlantc sea shore and the site’s Tequesta Indian history, the Mandara Spa takes inspiration from the fluidity and strata of the ocean as a continuous source of reflection and rebirth

Fluid Floor

Archetypes + Model

Describes a descent into water or a definitive node of the space between mental and physical reality. The fluidity from the ocean that surrounds the site influences the circulation. Creates the sensation of push and pull within interior spaces

Strata

Natural horizontal or vertical wall treatments similar to the layers of the earth. Reinforces delineated pathways and suggests a hierarchy through staggered elevations.
