OUROBOROS CITY THE DEATH AND REBIRTH OF MAANSHAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Guan-Hom Liu 2014, Thunghai University Thesis Design Kenting, Taiwan Dystopia Urban Planing Nuclear Plant Decommision > national golden award : BEST NEW ARCHITECT
An architectural fable story, depicted a city which science was worship as alchemy, mystery and superstition. Based on comparative architecture typology, retrospect from the Pantheon, Newton Memorial, and decommissioning Nuclear Power plant, as a contemporary Zeitgeist Memorial, how it tur n out to be a scifidystopia at last. The existied complexity and contradiction are reasonably but absurdly coexist, as it always is.

1880The main distinction between historical and modern architecture, is the difference of typology and space form. In in cultural heritage historical sites, the clarity of figureground could be presented by Giambattista Nolli’s "Map of Rome" in 1748. In the other hands, the lack of figure-ground in modern architecture, could be showed in Colin Rowe’s “Collage City" in 1978, which took Wiesbaden the german city as example. This project begin with the historical site Dadaocheng, based on the context pattern as the figure-ground site plan strategy. In addition, transfer the neighbourhood facade texture turn into the elevation interface. At last, controlled the whole volume by existed skyline, intent to develop renewal design method.

Structure system is one primary factor of progress Architecture Form. Retrospect of architecture history, the advance of architecture language is highly correlated to the invention of structure system. Specifically, the beam-column system in greek temple, the arch in roman basilica, the vault in Mid-century gothic church, till contemporary the domino system which Le Corbusier advocated, the Toyo Ito’s generative order. At last,Cecil Balmond’s stucture system desgin methodology. This project is mainly focused on the notion of binary of structure system, based on the invention of structure system as design method, intent to create novel architecture language and space experience. The Rowhouse W is the reconsinderation of residential typology. To look back at Taiwanese architectrue history, there're much of sensational rowhouse paradigm design show the elder wisdom, not only the patio allowed the sunlight and ventilation, but also the hierarchy of space. Based on the methodology of reinterpretation of rowhouse typology, as well as applied those displine into this project, all in all, to create a W-Shaped rowhouse, composed by patio and room.
