The Loire Castles

Château d’ Chambord

Along the river edge of the Loire, the Castles that inhabit it have been historically related

with water.

Mothe Chandenier is a unique example among these castles. Its a castle set far apart from its river edge but that, however, brings the water of the Loire by artificial means, such as the deviation of it through new affluents and channels that end up with the creation of a lake that surrounds the castle. The Dam In this way, we understand our propposal as a step further in the historical evolution of this castle and its way of interacting with water. For this to happen, we take advantage of the dam typology (a barrier constructed to hold back water) to host new programs without modifying the existing ruin.

The Dam & the Castle Wall

The space between the two walls will host the different programs along the castle. The inner wall belongs to the castle while the outer one made out of reinforced concrete will be the new one that holds back the water.

The Walkway & the New Enclosures

Between these massive walls, a light walkway is inserted in order to stress the linear character of the proposal. When the line goes inside the castle, the inner space gets closed up through a light permeable enclosure that enables the castle to host some of the required programs while preserving the ruins and the nature that inhabits it.

IOR TION

Due to the circular footprint of this dam, we have the opportunity to provide a continuous and changing pathway along its perimeter, entering inside the castle just in the chambers where accessibility and the preexistence levels allows it. Accessibility can be understood as one of the key concepts of our design proposal. The width and the floor level of the dam vary adapting themselves to the castle outline and the program along its way round. This creates a continuous and interactive path in relation to the water.

The Dam - Pathway Plan S: 1/200m

The Public Programs The different changes in the width and floor level of the walkway between the two walls allows to create different spaces that host de different public programs that complement the castle and the villas, such as outside pools, benches and steps.

The Villas For the design of the Villas hidden in the dam under water, we take into account the sun input and build them facing south, with big skylights facing that direction and allowing the guests to have direct views from the bed to the castle outer facade.
