EVOLUTION OF Z!NK 2002-2015

U.S, CANADA, MEXICO, RUSSIA, ST.BARTH- WHAT’S NEXT?

A LETTER FROM OUR PUBLISHER:

PUBLISHER’S LETTER I am truly excited to debut this mock Autumn/Winter 2015 Z!NK Magazine. My team and I thought long and hard about a theme for this issue and came up with Romeo and Juliet. It’s a tragic love story that everyone knows except this time we will take a look at it through fashion photography. Our demagraphics for this project include millenials ages 20-30. Z!nk is a quintessential international fashion and lifestyle magazine that was founded in 2002. Its wide appeal is indulged by creative minds, initiating a movement that has captured the expression of numerous virtuosos in each issue. The editorial content is uncensored, sharp and inquisitive. Its photography is artfully sexy and overtly creative. Z!nk inspire artists, Z!nk is inspired by art. Far beyond fashion, the publication is a provocateur and a multidimensional experience in the world of design, entertainment, art, music, technology and uncensored politics. Z!nk is the authority on emerging and reinventing talent. The Magazine is a true original, ceaselessly innovating. Z!nk speaks a vernacular that our reader responds to; intelligent, creative, witty and analytical. The publication serves as an exploration into all the themes of the fashion world; a stark contrast to the context of all others. In its 13 year legacy, Z!NK’s exclusive, extravagant and avant-garde content includes covers graced by Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Tyra Banks, Jessie J, Charlize Theron, and an exclusive feature with Jay Z (in his cross-over to the business world) amongst much more.this We would like to personally like to thank all of the people that helped with putting the magazine together.Thank you to all of the photographers, models, makeup artists, stylist and our team. Best of Z!NK

THE MIDNIGHT PLANETARIUM The Midnight Planetarium is a new futuristic time piece that features six bejeweled planets in our solar system accurately rotating around the sun. The watch was created by Van Cleef and Arpels in partnership with Christian Van der Klaauw. Instead of hands denoting the hours and minutes, it incorporates six of our solar system’s planets rotating a tiny version of the sun in real time. Mercury will make a lap around the watch’s face in just 88 days, Venus will require 224, and Earth of course does it in exactly a year. Saturn, on the other hand, the farthest planet from the sun won’t make it back to its starting position for a whopping 29 and half years.

There is also a cool feature on the watch called “the lucky day” feature that uses the bezel to allow owners to select any day of the year as your lucky day and the earth will fall underneath the painted star on the watch’s crystal on that day every year. After three years of work, the watch was unveiled at the annual Salon International de la Haute Harlogerie (SIHH), held every January in Geneva. Each of the planets are represented by precious and semi-precious stones, ranging from red jasperto serpentine and turquoise. The Midnight Planetarium starts at a price of $245,000. LUISA SOARES

Chanel products have always been timeless products that will never go out of style and Chanel’s 5th perfume is still a major symbol of the brand. The new fragrance, with it’s touch of femininity was created by Ernest Beaux.

Some notes on the perfume say it’s composed of aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, neroli and ylang-ylang, the heart of jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, and iris, while the base is created of vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, amber and patchouli.

This new fragrance is well-known for being one of Marlyn Monroe’s favorite perfumes. She is one of the sexiest and most influential women in history. Marlyn said that to bed she wore just a few drops of the fragrance.

Never get out of the classic. Be feminine, chic and sexy with the fragrance that never goes out of style – Chanel No 5. 15 ml $200.00. http://www.chanel.com LUIZA PINHEIRO

Out of all the twenty-four creations of the perfume, mademoiselle chose the 5th, and from that came the name of product. Chanel believed her lucky number was 5, and so the Chanel No 5 was presented on the fifth day of the fifth month of 1921.

New studies have shown that staying active while on vacation can significantly reduce stress and can enhance your overall experience. SLEEP MORE Sleep is valuable when it comes to living a healthy and well balanced life. Those who don’t get enough sleep have less energy to move throughout the day and that can actually slow down their metabolism over time. Seven to nine hours is the recommended amount by doctors but as we all live busy lives we sometimes put sleep off for another time. No matter how busy your day may get make sure to add sleep to your daily to-do list. CHERISH RILEY

THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERA: ETHAN GUICE

Ethan Guice is the photographer behind the amazing breathtaking photos of Juliet’s Chamber. He is from Enterprise, Alabama and is now studying at Savannah College of Art and Design pursuing a career in photography. He started to get into photography his Junior year of high school, doingphotography for his school newspaper and yearbook. After that, he became more passionate about this form of art and hopes to pursue it in many different ways for the rest of his life. Q: How do you get a person, place or thing that is in front of the camera onto the film, chip or paper the way you want? A: I work primarily with portraits and nudes so when I work with people I tend to talk a lot more than I shoot trying to make the model as comfortable as possible.

I love photography because I get to meet so many people that I otherwise probably wouldn’t so I try to learn as much as I can about these people while shooting them in order to make a more accurate portrait and make sure the model is comfortable in this very exposed state. Q: Which photographers influence you the most? A: I have a lot of photographer that influence me but to just name a few that I look up to would be Magdalena Wosinska and her amazing portraits of her close friends and their adventures together, Alex Prager and her amazing mixture of cinematic film and photography in her work, and Edward Weston who I consider that master of the female nude.

ETHAN GUICE

Q: What type of camera do you use? and why? A: I use a lot of different cameras for different things. I always have my Leica Minilux 35mm point and shoot with me for snapshots. I tend to work with a lot of bigger view cameras when I have the chance. I like the challenge of using a more meticulous camera. Q: Whats your favorite place to shoot? A: I am for the most part a studio photographer but I don’t think I really have a favorite place to shoot. I always try to find new places if I shoot outside of the studio. Q: Tell us the story behind your amazing photographs. A: I have always loved shooting portraits and have worked this past couple years to really find my style for portraits and I am still working on it now.

57

My nudes came from my introduction into alternative and historic printing processes and paying an ode to the old masters of photography such as Weston. Q: Whats your secret to make photographs look beautiful? A: I don’t know if I really have a secret to making photographs. I am just a really good people person and really enjoy working with people and try very hard to make everyone feel comfortable during shoots and I think that may be what helps make my photographs. LUCAS MENEZES BRAZILIAN PHOTOGRAPHER

Lucas is a young twenty year old photographer who got his start at the age of fifteen, using his friends from school to model. Over time as his photography skills progressed and his work became more recognized, he began to focus more on major and other personal projects. These days he’s working on collaborating his photography career with his Fashion Design major. “During these past five years of being a photographer I have made mistakes and learned from them and it has really helped me evolve as a photographer. The hardest part of my career was finding my own style and now that I have found it, I make sure to stay true to what my beliefs are and that’s definitely seen throughout my work. I notice my qualities but I’m constantly working on things to improve on because it helps to better label the style and segment of an artist. I really love what I do and plan to further my career as a fashion photographer”.

Q: What thoughts normally run through your mind right before you capture a shot? A: I’m always thinking about if this shot is going to execute the idea that I’m going for. I want people to be able to see the story I’m trying to portray and feel all the emotions I feel for the piece. Q: How long have you been a photographer? A: Five years. Q: Where do you seek inspiration? A: I get inspiration from a lot of places. When I start getting ideas for a new project, I become observant of all of my surroundings picking up on anything that is inspirational to me. For instance, If I’m walking down the street and pass by an interesting building, I immediately start creating a story in my head picturing how I could convey the idea while it incorporating the building.

CULTURE

CULTURE

But my main source of inspiration comes from poetic images, surrealism, exotic paintings, random photographs, movie scenes, or an important editorial that I admire. All of these different sources generate ideas for the overall look of the photo. Q: Who are your favorite artists? A: Helmut Newton, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott and Mario Testino. Q: How would you describe your style? A: A vibe with some specifically points of color, using caricatures and very peculiar. I really convey my feelings through the poses, which are always extremely emphasized. Also, it has a bit of drama because it is something that I think that can’t miss. Q:What is your favorite accessory, other than your camera? A: I don’t have one. My camera is my favorite accessory and as a matter of fact some of my most memorable and amazing shots were captured using just my camera and nothing else. I only use other accessories like light equipment when really necessary. Q: What do you feel is the most challenging thing about photographing models? A: One of the most challenging things about photographing models is when you’re doing a multiple themed shoot in a short time span with the same models. Sometimes changing the aesthetic can be difficult, especially because you want to make sure you’re giving your client exactly what they want.

Q: What do you prefer to shoot: fashion weeks or photoshoots? A: I really don’t know because I love both. My feelings for the two are completely different. During an editorial you come up with a plan and create ideas with your team and constantly tweak things up until the day of the shoot. Being a part of fashion week is always a surprising and fast pace type of job. You’re in competition with so many other photographers and all of us are trying to capture “The Shot” which can be some what stressful because I want my shot to be perfect and have a sense of originality to it. Q: What type of advice would you give to someone who’s planning to start a career as a Fashion Photographer? A: If someone is interested in starting a career in photography, the biggest advice I would give to them would be to not give up on the first “no”. if I would’ve given up the first time someone told me “no” I would’ve never had the opportunity to work with all the people who told me “yes “and who have made my career so entertaining and memorable so far. There will be no’s in every profession no matter if you’re a photographer or fashion designer but it well help you to better yourself as an artist and to become a stronger person. LUISA SOARES

SOUL BEHIND THE MUSIC + INTERVIEW WITH JUSTICE RILEY

Q: When did you start playing the guitar? A: I decided to start playing the guitar 7 years ago when I saw a video on YouTube of Jimi Hendrix playing the star spangled banner. I thought it was pretty cool. Q: What types of things inspires you to write your music? A: Everything around me inspires me to write music. I try to make music my unorthodox. You know, different. Q: As a musician, what has been the most challenging thing for you so far? A: The most challenging thing about being a musician is trying to create my own sound. I want people to be able to listen to a song and say “Oh, that’s Inigo Sane.”

Q: When did you start producing music for other people? A: I started producing music when I was a freshman in high school. I sucked though. But my consistency with it allowed me to get better. That’s when I started producing for a local rapper in Atlanta. Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? A: In 5 years, I hope I’m sitting in an LA studio, working on my second album. CHERISH RILEY

THE DO IT YOURSELF GIRL: BEAUTY MCKNIGHT

Beaty Mcknight’s work is a constant reflection of her desire to better the environment as well as the humans which inhabit it. The dress featured in this issue was made to reflect the impact of sweatshops on labor workers. The white denim dress is distressed all over with gear embellishments around the collar and front panel to symbolize heavy machinery and labor wear. The chain links in the skirt act as weights, creating a gravitating pull on the wearer while leaving a train at the back. The weight and train reflects the ongoing cycle of factory workers and their families. “If we do not care about the way our industry manufactures, what good is there to be left behind? The future of fashion lies within each of our marks, as producers and as consumers.” -Beaty McKnight Q: What is a typical day like for you? A: These days... Detox tea. Dark chocolate. Coffee. Work. Repeat. Q: How do you stay inspired? A: I stay up to date on news and the environmental impacts around the world. My work always stems from factors pertaining to humanity.

Q: What is your favorite artist? A: Favorites are for the close minded. All art is wonderful if you let it be. Q: How have your deisgns changed from when you first began? A: B:When I first began I didn’t have a clear vision of the direction I wanted to go. Now I am able to design according to where I wish to see my work in 10 years. Q: What projects are you currently working on? A: I am trying to jumpstart my own company. Right now I’m in website building. With a vision comes clarity (laughs) but also comes OCD. It’s taking forever to get it exactly how I envision it. Anyone fast with coding? I’m hiring. Q: What would you say is one of the most important steps in your design process that impacts your final piece? A: :Research. It’s important for me to have reasoning behind my designs. Whether it be aiding an event or simply supplying a functional garment, research is the most important factor. I like to remain aware of how I’m impacting the environment and what I can do to make it better.

What’s better than one model? Two! And what makes it better is that they’re twins! It was such a pleasure working with these two sisters that have a passion for the arts and are truly a breath of fresh air.Their career is just beginning, but we are pretty sure that these girls will hit big in the modeling and acting world. Caroline and Rebecca Huey are both 20 years old and are majoring in Performing Arts. They like doing television acting and improvisational comedy and Caroline also took the time to show us her love for dancing during one of the garment changes with a few ballet positions. Q:What other projects have you worked on? C: This summer I had the opportunity to do improv for a play called Amazon Pilot. We did a show once a week and that was really cool. I also had the chance to perform in a festival in New York. Q: When and how did you start acting? R:We started doing theater and everything in high school. A really good friend of ours was auditioning for a show, and she convinced us to audition as well. We fell in love with it and then we decided we wanted to pursue a career in it. When I came to SCAD I didn’t even know I wanted to do film and Television acting but after taking a few of my classes I realized I liked it and started getting into it, and now I’m in love with it!

87

Q: How is it working with your sister? C: It’s really good, because we automatically think very similar. Like today, we just finished writing a sitcom together. This past friday we were on an improv trip with one of our best friends but unfortunately she got sick and had to perform alone. That was a bittersweet moment for us since we have never performed without her before, but over all it was a really cool experience. R: I like working together, because we can always tell each other when we are being ridiculous and call each other out when we are doing something wrong. I know how she thinks, I know what she will do, so it’s really easy for us to work together, because we are on the same page all the time. Q: Who and what inspires you? Anyplace or anything? R: This summer, my sister and I got the chance to travel to New York and that was our first time. We spent three months there and it was really inspiring to us. The atmosphere and the people are so different in New York. Everyone there walks and talks with a purpose and are doing things to chase what they want to do with their life and that to me is inspiring. C: For me, watching other really amazing actors, good quality programs, and partaking in art shows is truly inspiring.

88

CULTURE

CULTURE

I also look to Choreographers and dancers for inspiration as well. Pina Bausch is one of my favorite choreographers. She has a documentary on her and every time I watch it I get inspired. So overall, just watching other passionate artists can be inspiring to your life. Q: What or with who, would be your dream work like? R: My ideal career path would be doing independent films or maybe being apart of a netflix television series. I would really like to have a career like Marie Gauthier, she’s one of my favorites actresses. C: For me, my dream would be to act in one of Wes Anderson’s and Woody Allen’s films. They are incredible directors and I absolutely love their film style. R: Being able to fully support myself as an actress, would be very wonderful Q: What would be your dream destination? For work, or maybe travel C: I’ve always wanted to go to Sweden because I am very passionate about the culture and the people there. I also really love the mountains and scenery of Sweden. So it would be cool to stay there for a couple of months, away from everything and just have fun exploring the country and experiencing a new culture.

89

R: I really want to go to Ireland or Scotland one day. Our oldest sister had the chance to go to Ireland last year and turns out we even have some family from there. I imagine it must be a very beautiful place and has such an interesting culture. I believe if I ever got the opportunity to ever go there I would truly enjoy it. Q: What does the fashion world need the most? R: I think the fashion world needs individuality. It’s so easy to get inspired by other people and forget all your own rules. There are so many rules in fashion but also people need to realize that fashion is about breaking the rules as well. Just having your individuality and putting that into how you dressis what makes you interesting. C: I think fashion always needs inspiration from what’s been done in the past. There are always different types of trends that are coming back and repeating. I also think it’s fun to go back and see how people used to dress in the past and then fast forward to the future and see how people will react to how our generation dressed. LUIZA PINHEIRO

Q: What song do you play before a big night out?

After class I get lunch and finish off my day by hanging out with friends and completing homework assignments.

Q: If you could live in one place forever, where would it be?

Q: How were you discovered (as a model), and how old were you? A: I was discovered when I was 13. I was out shopping with my mom, and a scout approached me, asking if I was interested in pursuing modeling. Q: What was your first gig? A: My first gig was a small fashion show for a boutique. Q: Tell us a little bit about your family and the values they installed in you. A: I’m really lucky to have a great family who supports my ambitions. My parents have been a big influence in my life, and taught me a lot of things that I am very thankful for today. It was very important for them that I learned, you have to work hard to get what you want, so from that perspective they instilled a good work ethic in me from an early age, which I am very grateful of, because if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Q: Who are some of your idols and how do you find inspiration? A: One of my Idols in the industry is Dian Von Furstenberg, I recently read her book “The Woman I Wanted To Be” and highly recommend it! I love that she went out and created the life she wanted for herself, instead of waiting for someone to give it to her. I admire her and her brand for choosing to empower young women. Q: Is there a particular client (friend) that you are always happy to work with or any designer that you like walking for in particular? A: One of my favorite people to collaborate with is my friend Erin Kelley, we always have fun working together, and are on the same page with a lot of things which makes everything easier.

A: Not really but I have always loved traveling to new places and experiencing new environments and learning about new cultures! Q: What does the fashion world need most? A: I think right now the fashion industry needs a shake up, everything is getting a little tired. We need someone new and exciting to come along and change things up a bit. Q: Are you working on any other projects besides modeling? A: I’m working on a few fashion projects and I’m really excited about it! Q: What can we expect from you in the future? A: Hopefully something great, you’ll have to stay tuned to find out! Q: What can we find on your fall music playlist? A: So many random artists, but one of my favorites at the moment is The Weekend. Q: What’s your dream travel destination? A: One of the places I really want to go to is Greece, my mom’s family is Greek, so it’s been somewhere I’ve always wanted to go. CHERISH RILEY
