Los agentes del arte, los profesionales que trabajamos en la difusión de la cultura visual, estamos llamados a contribuir al desarrollo de nuevos tipos expositivos, un compromiso que no podemos eludir: artistas y comisarios hemos de desarrollar los modelos clásicos de exposición adaptándolos al siglo XXI y enfatizando la empatía con el público, que es el receptor de las exposiciones. Como dice Chris Dercon, director de la Tate Modern en Londres: “Cuando la gente entra en el museo, no sale de su vida. Es parte de ella. El museo del futuro es un sitio lleno de ideas, de actividades para el espectador“. ¿Por qué va el público a una exposición? ¿para ver lo que espera ver, para sorprenderse, para criticar, con la idea de aprender? El verbo aprender, interpretado como una actividad artística más, ligada a lo artístico.

Como un tercer paso que acompaña a ese ver e interpretar. Volvemos a Chris Dercon, que plantea la Tate Modern como un lugar “donde hacerse preguntas“. El museo, el centro de exposiciones, ¿lo podemos plantear como un lugar de ejercicio mental? Y algo más: el público, hoy día, está llamado a convertirse en participante de la exposición; con su opinión y, cada vez más, con su contribución. Nos interesa la supervivencia de la noción de la palabra público; su transformación de sujeto pasivo en activo, y, a la vez, los cambios que a lo largo de la historia ha experimentado el ejercicio de la interpretación por parte del público, hasta llegar a su percepción contemporánea.

La construcción del nosotros se basa en las nociones de gente y público, y es una construcción que va más allá de lo cultural, impregnándose de lo social y lo político. Visitante, espectador, paseante, consumidor de cultura... son todos términos en transformación veloz,

As agents of art, professionals who work to broadcast visual culture, we have a duty to devise and develop new display formats, an obligation we cannot shirk: artists and curators alike must expand on traditional exhibition models, adapt them to the 21st century and establish an empathetic bond with the public, the target and recipient of our exhibitions. As Chris Dercon, director of the Tate Modern, London, says, “When people step into the museum, they don’t want to step out of their life. They want to get closer to it. The future museum will not be empty, but full of new ideas, activities and people.”

Why do people go to an exhibition? To see what they expect to see, to be surprised, to criticise, or with the idea of learning something? “Learning” can be interpreted as simply another activity for spectators in an artistic context, as the third logical step after reading and interpreting. Going back to Chris Deacon, he views the Tate Modern as a place “for asking questions”. Can we see the museum, the exhibition venue, as a mental gymnasium? Furthermore, today’s public is expected to participate in an exhibition, offering opinions and, with increasing frequency, making active contributions. I am fascinated by the survival of the idea behind the word “public”, by its transformation from passive to active subject, and how the act of interpretation on the public’s part has changed throughout history and acquired its contemporary definition.

The concept of the “we” is based on people and public, and this construct extends beyond the cultural sphere to embrace the social and political. Visitors, spectators, passers-by, cultural consumers—these rapidly shifting terms, rooted in the postmodern malaise of art, comprise a collectivity that defies definition given the myriad profiles and particularities of contemporary audiences,

Para todos estos perfiles, hay grandes espectáculos y pequeñas lecturas, representaciones teatrales, obras de arte que mirar de una en una y grandes museos con miles de ellas juntas. Federico García Lorca era un enamorado de la poesía, la música y el teatro, así como un espíritu tenaz en su convicción de acercar las artes a públicos de todas las edades y clases sociales, tanto desde su creación personal como con su contribución a proyectos como La Barraca, en un momento en el que la vanguardia abogaba por llevar la cultura a los lugares más apartados, renegando de la idea del arte para las élites. Este es uno de los mensajes de esta exposición, donde creadores del gremio del arte contemporáneo quieren acercarse a todos los públicos sin distinción, con piezas específicas realizadas para esta muestra y este centro que abre sus puertas en Granada.

El público implica también economía de la atención, que a veces deriva hasta quedarse solo en una cifra.

Este es un reto impuesto, el público-visitante-estadística. Ahora se evalúa, por ejemplo, cuánto tiempo permanece un espectador delante de una obra de arte. El público es también consumidor —horrible palabra—, de régimen frugal o devorador de exposiciones, variando, pues, el volumen de lo que consume en un espectro que va desde el individuo que asiste a todo al que apenas visita nada. El ciudadano, aunque perplejo con la situación actual del país, no deja de ser visitante de las exposiciones en los museos, que siguen compitiendo por el mayor número de espectadores. Cada vez se visitan más los centros de arte. ¿Como vía de escape, de distracción, o por una educación que, con el tiempo, nos ha acostumbrado a convivir con el arte contemporáneo? Ese encuentro entre las obras artísticas y su audiencia produce siempre una reacción, aun en el caso de que al espectador no se le pida una interacción con la pieza.

La experiencia, aunque sea simplemente de tipo sensorial, tiene que suceder. De atracción o rechazo. De comprensión o enamoramiento. Las convenciones se

Citizens demand access to the arts; the enjoyment of culture is no longer a pastime but a civil right.

The public is the individual, the people, the intellectual and the man on the street, and for each of them there are grand spectacles and intimate readings, theatrical performances, works of art to be viewed one by one and vast museums where thousands are gathered under one roof. Federico García Lorca was a great lover of poetry, music and theatre with an unswerving conviction that the arts should be made available to audiences of all ages and social classes. He honoured this belief in his personal output as well as in his contribution to projects like La Barraca, at a time when the avant-garde was determined to bring culture to the remotest corners of the earth, shunning the notion of art for an elite few. This is one of the underlying messages of this exhibition, where creative members of the contemporary art guild reach out to the public in all its variegated facets, without distinction, through pieces produced specifically for this show and this centre now making its debut in Granada.

The public is also an important factor in attention economics, where it is often boiled down to bare facts and figures. The public-visitor-statistical equation is a mandatory challenge. Now, for example, institutions evaluate how much time a spectator spends examining each work of art. The public is also a frugal or voracious consumer—that awful word—of exhibitions with a widely varying volume of ingestion, from the individual who shows up for every event to one who rarely sets foot inside a museum. Citizens, though perplexed by the country’s current situation, still flock to exhibitions at museums, which continue to compete for the largest number of spectators. Art centres are visited with

van rompiendo. Una artista de talla como es Cristina Iglesias comenta: “Cuando estoy trabajando con una obra, pienso en el espacio de la ciudad o del museo que la va a acoger como un refugio donde el ciudadano se evada“.

Investigar y profundizar en la relación entre el espectador y lo que contempla, la comprensión del objeto observado, la obra de arte, lo que le pueda transmitir.

Esa es la responsabilidad del artista frente a su receptor, el público. El artista Isidoro Valcárcel Medina argumenta: “Yo al espectador le tengo un respecto absoluto, pero no cedo un ápice por él. No me interesa el espectador pasivo, el que ni deglute, ni digiere, ni disfruta. Lo único que le pido es atención“.

El museo debe conocer a su público. Hace estudios sobre qué tipo de persona va a ver las exposiciones y eventos que programa; suma visitantes y da cifras; debe pensar, con o sin estos datos, a quién se quiere dirigir, y su trabajo es la mayor y mejor difusión de su programa cultural. Mi opinión es que generar un público crítico es mil veces más interesante que trabajar para todos los públicos, pero esto es un punto de vista personal, como comisaria independiente. Y también como espectadora.

En esta exposición en el Centro Federico García Lorca, los artistas abordan una aproximación intuitiva e inteligente al espacio. La muestra se encuentra presente no solo en la sala de exposiciones al uso, sino también repartida en otras estancias del edificio, como introducción al mismo para el público. Esta ocupación del centro permite a los artistas ejercitar tácticas definidas en las piezas creadas expresamente para el lugar —de tipo site-specific—, donde se combinan las investigaciones de campo sobre

growing frequency, but is this because we are looking for an escape valve, a distraction, or because our education over the years has accustomed us to live with contemporary art? The encounter between artworks and audiences always produces a reaction, even when spectators are not asked to interact with the piece. We inevitably experience something, even if it is only sensory: attraction or dislike, understanding or infatuation. Conventions are being shattered, little by little. An artist of the stature of Cristina Iglesias remarks, “When I’m working on a piece, I think of the space in the city or the museum that’s going to receive it as a shelter where citizens go to escape from themselves.”

To investigate and explore the relationship between the viewer and the viewed, the comprehension of the observed object, the work of art, and what it can convey—that is the artist’s duty to the work’s intended recipient, the public. Artist Isidoro Valcárcel Medina has said, “I have the utmost respect for the audience, but I won’t yield an inch for them. I have no interest in passive spectators, who neither swallow nor digest nor savour the experience. All I ask is their attention.”

Museums must know their audiences. They conduct surveys to determine what kind of people come to their exhibitions and events; they tally visitors and publish figures; they have to consider, with or without the help of that data, whom they want to target; and their job is to advertise their cultural programme as effectively and widely as possible. I believe that cultivating a critical public is a thousand times more interesting than trying to attract every possible type of audience, but this is merely my personal opinion as an independent curator, and as a spectator.

In this exhibition at the Centro Federico García Lorca, the artists have approached the space in an intuitive, intelligent way. The show is present not only in the conventional exhibition rooms but also in other parts of the building, providing a kind of introduction to the main attraction. This complete takeover of the centre has allowed the artists to employ certain tactics in their sitespecific creations, which combine field research on a variety of themes: the generic concept of the public, the citizenry, beneficiaries of the exhibition; the presence and relevance of this building’s architecture, nestled in the heart of the city; Granada and its history, inserted in this space in Plaza de la Romanilla; the comings and goings of local residents; and, above it all, the overarching,

diferentes temas como son: el concepto genérico sobre el público, la ciudadanía, receptora de la exposición; la presencia y relevancia de este edificio, su propia arquitectura, inserta en el corazón de la ciudad; Granada y su historia, que, de este modo, entra en el propio centro, situado en la plaza de la Romanilla; el ir y venir de sus habitantes, y la memoria de la figura de Federico García Lorca, que planea por encima de todo ello y se hace presente como modo de realizar un acercamiento al público de carácter artístico, social, histórico y político, a la vez que puramente estético y emocional. A través de diferentes lenguajes y soportes, se brinda al espectador la oportunidad de un conocimiento del trabajo de los artistas participantes en la muestra, de una reinterpretación de las obras presentadas. Y por qué no, también se invita a generar un juicio sobre las mismas.

El público de este Centro Federico García Lorca, que ahora abre sus puertas por primera vez a la ciudadanía, está por formar, por crearse. Y la curiosidad inicial por conocer el interior del centro se verá poco a poco superada por la costumbre de acudir de una manera regular a este espacio, donde se sucederán eventos artísticos y culturales de toda índole, para todo tipo de públicos, que mostrarán sus preferencias con la frecuencia de sus visitas a unas u otras de las citas que la nueva institución proponga.

Y este arte nuevo puede generar dudas, interrogantes, preguntas o rechazos en el espectador, que se acerca con curiosidad a ver cómo es. El museo del siglo XXI ha explotado, ha roto sus viejos parámetros, y lo ha hecho hacia fuera y por dentro, desnudando sus esquinas y sótanos, dedicándose a cosas que antes no hacía, porque el público nuevo lo quiere conocer todo

omnipresent memory of Federico García Lorca, manifested as a connection with the public that is artistic, social, historical and political yet also purely aesthetic and emotional. Through different creative languages and formats, spectators are given the chance to discover the oeuvre of the artists featured in this exhibition and reinterpret the works on display—and, naturally, they are also invited to form an opinion of those works.

The public of this recently inaugurated Centro Federico García Lorca is as yet unidentified, an unknown quantity.

People will initially come to satisfy their curiosity about the building’s interior, but this trend will eventually give way to a pattern of regular visits. The centre will host a variety of artistic and cultural events for all types of audiences, and in time the frequency of the public’s visits will reveal its preferences for certain kinds of activities offered by the fledgling institution.

This new art may raise doubts, questions, misgivings and even rejection in the minds of those first curious spectators who come to see what it is like. The museum of the 21st century has exploded, bursting its traditional banks and overflowing inside its walls and onto the street, baring its corners and basements and doing things it never did before, because today’s public insists on knowing everything in order to answer its own questions.

Nowadays, museums are expected to offer empathy, to exist and work in sync with current social dynamics, and to provide other display models that shatter the stasis of the conventional museum-as-container concept. To keep pace with the public’s demand for change, museums obviously need a new kind of visibility, and this takes the form of a new approach to interaction.

Art institutions have a tremendous responsibility to their audiences, which they fulfil by inviting cultural agents and artists to present their work under their institutional guidance and production; and all of those agents and artists in turn must make a commitment to the public. In this circular relationship, everything must be geared towards satisfying the spectators, the citizens who directly or indirectly finance the art establishment.

What happens when a group of artists is asked to dialogue with a given space? In this case, they paid an initial visit to the building to get a physical and emotional feel for the space in its context, the city of Granada—a familiar face to some, and a new source of inspiration for

Artists’ Thoughts on the Public Artists are also spectators, of their own work and that of others, and they are responsible for the relationship they establish with audiences through their creations: giving them more or less information, letting a piece reveal more or less, and forging a bond with visitors or, at times, deliberately avoiding any semblance of empathy.

Since the 1970s, the famous artistic duo Gilbert & George have staunchly defended their belief in “art for all”, behind and beyond the walls of the art centre, museum or gallery.

“We believe that people who see our exhibitions become slightly different from those who don’t see, unavoidably.”

This faith and this innocence are real and necessary, though today we seem to have lost sight of them in our absorbing preoccupation with boosting visitor numbers.

Mark Dion, an artist whom I deeply admire for his output and the way he approaches and resolves a work of art, and who has also curated several exhibitions based on the heterogeneous collections of existing museums, has the following opinion of the public: “People enter the museum with their own agendas. Museum visitors are not mindless subjects of ideology. I think many of them have a healthy scepticism of institutional narratives.” He

Reflexiones de los artistas con respecto al público Los artistas son, a su vez, público, de sus propias obras y de las de los demás, responsables de la relación que establecen a través de su trabajo con el espectador, dándole más o menos información, dejando que su pieza desvele más o menos; creando una empatía con el visitante o evitándola intencionadamente, si fuera el caso.

Gilbert & George, la famosa pareja artística, han defendido desde 1970 su lema “arte para todos“, dentro y fuera del centro de arte, el museo o la galería.

“Siempre hemos dicho que la gente, después de ver una exposición, tiene que volver a su casa siendo diferente.“ Esta fe y esta inocencia son reales y necesarias, aunque parecen parámetros perdidos hoy día, entre números de visitantes en aumento, que ahora es lo que cuenta.

Mark Dion, un artista al que respeto enormemente por su trabajo, por el acercamiento que hace a la obra de arte y cómo la resuelve, y que también ha sido comisario de unas cuantas exposiciones cuya base son las colecciones heterogéneas de museos existentes, da su opinión sobre el público: “La gente entra en el museo con su propia agenda. Los visitantes de museos no son descerebrados desprovistos de ideología. Muchos de ellos mantienen un sano escepticismo respecto a la narrativa institucional“. Y continúa: “Estoy interesado en la tensión entre la posición del museo como lugar de educación y como lugar de entretenimiento. [...] La proliferación de tiendas de regalos, restaurantes, programas de difusión pública, es testimonio de la redirección [del museo] para ser un lugar más popular. Pero lo preocupante en este giro es que el museo, al volverse más ‘educacional’ en su esfuerzo por ser un lugar más popular, se ha convertido en un sitio más tonto. El museo parece así convertir a su audiencia en un público más joven, más infantil“.

Como dice Richard Serra, “mi fuerza procede de la ansiedad“, entendida como las ganas de hacer algo que le lleve a un punto de tensión interesante, como reto intelectual y estético propio, sin olvidar nunca que este ha de serlo también para todos los demás participantes en el proyecto expositivo: otro(s) artista(s), público e institución implicada, si la hay en el proyecto.

[...] The explosion of gift shops, restaurants, entertainment programmes and public outreach projects are [a] testimony to the museum’s redirection towards becoming more popular. But a disturbing thing about these shifts is that as the museum has become more ‘educational’ as part of its popularisation efforts, it’s also become dumber. The museum seems to conceive of its audience as younger and more childlike now.”

As Richard Serra says, “my strength comes from anxiety”, the anxious yearning to do something that leads to an interesting point of tension, as a personal aesthetic and intellectual challenge, but the creator should remember that it must also be a challenge for the rest of the exhibition project’s participants: other artist(s), the audience and the host institution, if applicable.

Dominique González-Foerster offers another artist’s perspective: “It’s hard to establish an immediate connection with a place [...]. We who work with plastic media are fortunate enough to have total freedom and spectators who can move about. Film, theatre and other genres have more passive audiences. Yes, art is more intense as an experience than as an image. It is space and time. I think of exhibitions in open spaces as places where things happen, where people meet and interact.”

Otra opinión, la de la artista Dominique GonzalezFoerster: “Establecer una conexión inmediata con un lugar es difícil [...]. Quienes trabajamos en los medios plásticos tenemos la suerte de contar con una libertad total y unos espectadores que pueden circular. El cine, el teatro y otros géneros cuentan con espectadores más pasivos. Sí, el arte es más intenso como experiencia que como imagen. Es espacio, es tiempo.

Pienso en las exposiciones en espacios abiertos como lugares en los que suceden cosas, donde la gente se encuentra“.

¿Para todos los públicos?

Ahora quiero hablar de Johannes Cladders, comisario y director durante muchos años (de 1967 a 1985) del museo estatal de Mönchengladbach, donde mostró en 1967 la primera retrospectiva de Joseph Beuys.

Cladders, amigo del también comisario Harald Szeemann, es una gran figura del comisariado del siglo pasado, aunque no tan reconocido como este último porque centró su trabajo en el museo de una pequeña ciudad de Alemania. Estamos hablando de los años sesenta, momento en que se empieza a gestar la figura del comisario al uso contemporáneo, y Cladders dice que él nunca hizo ningún tipo de concesiones al público en cuanto a gustos en las exposiciones que programaba en la institución. Esta opinión es radical viniendo de un director de museo, ya que el artista, en primer lugar, y el comisario, en segundo, pueden no pensar en el público, pero la institución sí debe hacerlo... ¿o no?

Y volviendo al artista, él está marcando, con su propia experiencia discursiva, su lugar en la sociedad y en el mundo, que le debe devolver algo por ello. El objeto artístico busca su lugar y su espacio, llena un sitio al que ha sido cuidadosamente destinado, aunque sea de modo efímero, para ser contemplado, para transmitir su mensaje. Y en su representación, podemos empezar a comprender la función del arte, al artista como ciudadano que lanza una comunicación, esperando que sea captada, si no del todo entendida.

Dora García dice que “El arte es para todos, pero sólo una élite lo sabe“. La dimensión ética del arte es ahora otra, más bien alejada de la boutade duchampiana, y quizás esto tenga que ver con esa máxima ampliación

retrospective was held in 1967. Cladders, a friend of fellow curator Harald Szeemann, is one of the great curatorial figures of the 20th century, although his name is not as widely known as Szeemann’s because his life’s work revolved around a museum in a small German city.

In the 1960s, the role of the curator as we now know it was just beginning to emerge, and Cladders claimed that he never made any kind of concession to the public’s tastes when deciding what type of exhibitions to host at his institution. This is a radical statement coming from a museum director; the artist, primarily, and the curator, to a lesser degree, may choose to disregard the public’s preferences, but an institution cannot afford to do so... or can it?

Coming back to artists, when they formulate a discursive experience they are effectively staking their claim in society and in the world, which must give them something

in return. The art object seeks its own place and space, filling a site for which it has been carefully crafted and predestined to be seen, to convey its message, albeit only temporarily. In its representation we begin to understand the function of art and of the artist as a citizen who is trying to say something, hoping that the message will at least be received if not fully understood.

Dora García claims that “art is for everyone, but only the elite knows it”, yet we no longer know if we can give credence to this Duchampian boutade. Art now has another ethical dimension, and perhaps it has to do with that compulsion to enlarge audiences, all audiences.

Artists respond to this context with their art, but they are no longer working for an elite few (I am not talking about collectors here); instead, their work is designed to be contemplated by a wide range of spectators, from the erudite specialist to the inexperienced layman. And

Y el artista pertenece a esta misma extensa comunidad. El mismo Duchamp —como siempre contradictorio, aunque a la vez certero— señala: “El artista no es el único que consuma el acto creador, pues el espectador establece el contacto de la obra con el mundo exterior, descifrando e interpretando sus propias calificaciones para añadir entonces su propia contribución al proceso creativo“.

Virginia Torrente (Bilbao, 1963) works as an independent curator. Her recent projects include Patricia Gadea. Atomic Circus at the MNCARS, Madrid (2014), Eight Extraordinary Spatial Questions at Tabacalera, Madrid (2014), Arqueológica at Matadero, Madrid (2013) and Estación Experimental (co-curated with Andrés Mengs) at the CA2M, Madrid and Laboral, Gijón (2011).

Before striking out on her own in 2007, she worked as Chief Curator of Exhibitions at Casa de América, Madrid (2003-2006), Chief Curator at the Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid (2000-2003) and Chief Curator of the Colección Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid, the largest private contemporary art collection in Spain (1992-2000).

She was also the artistic director of the first JustMad Festival (2010) and is a cofounder of the independent project Doméstico (1999-2009) and founder of “a3bandas” a curatorial project organized at different art galleries in Madrid since 2011.

La obra no existe sin un entorno propicio para ser contemplada o experimentada, es decir, sin el espectador.

Necesita de su resonancia, de su reciprocidad, que sucede en un momento eventual, en un espacio determinado que podemos llamar, como se define en el teatro, una “caja mágica“. Una experiencia que se produce dentro de un sistema relacional en el que, entre creación y recepción, se suceden y conjugan pérdidas y encuentros, caminos de ida y vuelta, cruces y senderos que provocan miradas y acercamientos al trabajo del artista que van de lo común a lo inédito.

Trabajamos para un público nuevo, alejado del modelo tradicional, que fue elitista y pasivo, y que ahora se coloca a años luz de una actitud reverencial hacia lo artístico. Que ahora exige comprender y disfrutar a la vez, sin complejos. Como decía el artista Nacho Criado: “Un arte que camina necesita un observador que siga el paso“.

Contradicting García’s statement, the ever insightful Marcel Duchamp declared, “The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.”

The work cannot exist without a setting conducive to its contemplation or experience—in other words, without an audience. It needs to resonate with and be reciprocated by spectators, and this happens within a clearly defined space which we might call, to borrow a theatrical term, a “black box”. This experience takes place in a relational system where, between creation and reception, an interweaving sequence of losses and discoveries, outbound and inbound routes, intersections and paths elicits visions and approaches to the artist’s work that range from the commonplace to the unprecedented.

Today we work for a new public, far removed from the traditional idea of elitist, passive spectators and with an attitude towards art that is anything but reverential. This public has no compunctions about demanding their right to understand and enjoy at the same time. As the artist Nacho Criado once commented, “Art that strides ahead needs observers who can match its pace.”

Los sintítulos [The Untitled]

2015 Lorca dandi y elegante; Lorca irónico, que se ríe de la intelectualidad; Lorca contemporáneo, reencarnado en la poesía de Saskia Te Nicklin; Lorca sensorial, en el lenguaje y en el dibujo; Lorca estrellado en la noche granadina; Lorca protagonista de los títeres de cachiporra de los que tanto gustaba; Lorca arlequín; Lorca limonero del jardín de la Huerta de San Vicente que le vio crecer; Lorca haciendo el gamberro con sus amigos en la Residencia de Estudiantes... Todas estas y muchas otras referencias han sido utilizadas para Los sintítulos, conjunto de obras que Belén Rodríguez presenta en esta exposición, donde la artista ha querido “estar con Federico“.

Una serie de paneles, de bastidores colocados en sucesión a modo de desfile lorquiano, presentan múltiples ideas imbuidas de un espíritu alegre, de una inocencia que el poeta nunca perdió, libre de prejuicios y de libre interpretación, y que se perpetúa en la obra de Belén Rodríguez. Motivos referenciales aparentemente banales componen un teatrillo del que no somos solo espectadores: estamos obligados a participar, a pasear a través de él para ver su anverso y su reverso, para disfrutar de las bambalinas, para descubrir lo escondido en el juego de superposiciones que la artista nos propone. Desde los teatros de títeres que al Lorca niño le gustaba representar ante familia y amigos, hasta la vanguardia surrealista que se cocinó con él en la Residencia de Estudiantes en Madrid, Belén Rodríguez rememora a Lorca a lo largo del tiempo, de su vida y su trabajo artístico, con sus contradicciones y su hipersensibilidad a flor de piel.

Evoca Isabel García Lorca, hablando de su hermano: “En Federico, lo cotidiano era casi siempre algo recién hecho [...] Se le ha comparado muchas veces con un niño. Se ha hablado, y con razón, de la importancia de los niños en su obra [...] Todo esto me hace

pensar que el recuerdo que yo tengo de él es muy parecido a la alegría, la sorpresa y el entusiasmo...”.

La obra de Belén Rodríguez se mueve por un impulso investigador que fluye libre; y en esa misma libertad, sus ideas de partida llegan a concretarse en

Elegant, foppish Lorca; ironic Lorca, laughing at intellectualism; contemporary Lorca, reincarnated in the poetry of Saskia Te Nicklin; sensory Lorca, in language and in drawing; starry Lorca, glittering in the night sky of Granada; Lorca, prince of the billy-club puppets he loved so dearly; Lorca the harlequin; Lorca the lemon tree in the garden of his boyhood at Huerta de San Vicente; Lorca making mischief with his mates at the Residencia de Estudiantes... These and many other references have gone into the making of Los sintítulos, the series created for this exhibition by Belén Rodríguez which, in her words, reflects her desire to “be with Federico”.

A series of panels or frames lined up one after another like a Lorquian parade presents multiple ideas that radiate a sense of joy, that childlike innocence, unprejudiced and open to interpretation, which the poet never lost and which lives on in Belén Rodríguez’s work. Seemingly banal referential motifs create a little theatre where we are not mere spectators: we are obliged to participate, to stroll about and explore its front and backstage, to loiter in the wings, to discover what is hidden in the game of superimpositions that the artist has invented. From the puppet shows Lorca liked to put on for his family and friends as a boy to the Surrealist avant-garde theatre he helped to cook up at the Residencia de Estudiantes, Belén Rodríguez remembers Lorca through the years of his life and his artistic output, with all his contradictions and thin-skinned hypersensitivity.

Isabel García Lorca, speaking of her brother, recalls, “For Federico, the everyday was almost always something fresh and new [...]. Many people have likened him to a child. Much has been said, and with good reason, about the importance of children in his work [...]. All this makes me think that my memory of him is something very close to joy, surprise and enthusiasm...”

Belén Rodríguez’s work is driven by a free-flowing investigative impulse, and in that freedom her initial ideas become concrete materialisations where anything and everything is valid: canvases, easels, videos, writings, meteorites, films, music and countless other elements which the artist’s capable hands transform into liquid poetry. It should therefore come as no surprise that she has found it so easy to channel the Lorquian spirit, which breathed magic into

materializaciones donde todo vale: telas, caballetes, vídeos, escritos, meteoritos, películas, música, etc., elementos que devienen fluidamente poéticos en su transformación por la mano de la artista. De ahí que no nos pueda sorprender su fácil conexión con el espíritu lorquiano, que insuflaba magia en lo que tocaba. En esa conexión, el juego, lo banal, la diversión, el salir de juerga, también están presentes, quitando trascendencia a la representación artística.

La relación entre lo real y lo fantástico la establece un ojo de gran agudeza, pero, a la vez, inocente y puro, que se fija en lo extraordinario que persiste en lo cotidiano y lo eleva a un lugar destacado de observación para disfrute de terceros, los espectadores. Una tela carcomida por el sol, unos desperdicios de plástico que flotan en el agua y son finalmente arrojados a la playa, el moho que se va comiendo un trozo de cartón húmedo, la primorosa retícula de un cuaderno para aprender a escribir, el ondear de una bandera... Todo ello es apreciado por Belén Rodríguez y, una vez captado, lo hace suyo como poesía.

Selección de materiales, nuevos y reciclados, que se convierten en pequeñas joyas al ser distorsionados, separados de su uso original, bajo el potencial de la mano de la artista, creando una paradoja que nos hace percibir lo conocido de otra manera. Y esta manera tiene el poder evocador de una nostalgia que, aunque es la de la autora, nos conecta con nuestra propia infancia y nuestros propios recuerdos, suspendidos en el tiempo; y también con los de Lorca, siempre presentes en estos trabajos que aquí se re-presentan. Un simple trapo donde secar y limpiar el pincel se transforma en un nuevo cuadro; los restos de obras inconclusas, en vibrantes esculturas e instalaciones. Son como cápsulas de un poema largo, en pequeñas dosis, donde lo material y lo espiritual forman un solo cuerpo expresivo. Belén Rodríguez explora los detritus, aplica su percepción a las pequeñas cosas que despreciamos y ni miramos a lo largo del día, buscando y encontrando lo artístico en lo cotidiano; con este proceder, reconstruye en su imaginación un nuevo Lorca y nos lo muestra. El magnetismo del autor se reencarna en el trabajo de la artista.

Y en este particular homenaje al poeta que Belén Rodríguez ha creado en Los sintítulos podemos identificar plenamente las palabras que han servido como fuente de inspiración para la artista y que fueron pronunciadas por Lorca en su conferencia La mecánica de la poesía: “El arte tiene que avanzar como avanza la ciencia día tras día, en la región increíble que es creíble y en el absurdo que se convierte luego en una pura arista de verdad“.

everything it touched. Games, triviality, amusement and partying are also part of that spiritual connection, downplaying the transcendental aspect of artistic representation.

This connection between reality and fantasy is established by an eye that is keen and incisive yet also innocent and pure, one that focuses on the extraordinary vestiges of the ordinary and lifts it up to a place of visual prominence for others, the spectators, to enjoy. A piece of cloth worn ragged by the sun, bits of plastic waste that float in the water and are eventually washed up on the beach, the mould that slowly devours a scrap of wet cardboard, the perfect grid lines of a notebook for learning to write, the waving of a flag... nothing escapes the notice of Belén Rodríguez, and once it is in her sights she appropriates it as poetry.

Under the potential of the artist’s strong hands, her selected materials, both new and recycled, are distorted, divested of their original purpose and transformed into little gems, creating a paradox that makes us see the familiar in a different light. This method has the evocative power of a nostalgic emotion which, although it is the artist’s own, takes us back to our own childhood and our own memories, frozen in time, and also connects us with Lorca’s memories, which are omnipresent in the pieces re-presented here. A simple rag for drying and cleaning brushes becomes a new painting; the leftover scraps of unfinished works are transformed into vibrant sculptures and installations. They are like capsules of a long poem, administered in small doses, where the material and the spiritual unite to form a single expressive body. Belén Rodríguez explores detritus, turning a perceptive eye to the little things we consider beneath our notice and barely even look at throughout the day, searching for and finding the artistic in the commonplace. In the process, she reconstructs a new Lorca in her imagination and shows him to us. The author’s magnetism is reincarnated in the artist’s work.

One of the artist’s sources of inspiration for Los sintítulos was a phase spoken by Lorca during a lecture entitled “The Mechanics of Poetry”, and the echo of those words resounds in every canyon and crevice of Belén Rodríguez’s personal homage to the poet: “Art must advance just as science advances day after day, in the incredible region that is credible and in the absurd that later becomes a pristine ridge of truth.”

El proyecto que Andrea Canepa ha preparado para presentar en el Centro Federico García Lorca se inscribe dentro de un proceso de ida y vuelta que, de manera general, alude al tiempo y el espacio y, de forma mucho más concreta, se refiere a la ciudad de Granada y a sus visitantes, aquí en la modalidad de turistas.

Todo comienza tras reunir una colección de postales aleatoria que tienen en común la imagen de la ciudad de Granada como protagonista; postales recolectadas en mercadillos de segunda mano y que, en su momento, personas que estaban de visita en la ciudad enviaron a diferentes puntos de España con destino a sus seres queridos. Este recuerdo en forma de tarjeta postal, estos entrañables envíos que hoy día apenas tienen ya práctica, presentan un reverso en la obra de Andrea Canepa cuando decide ponerse a rastrear las direcciones de destino de dichos envíos postales, el lugar exacto adonde fueron a parar. Y aquí comienza la investigación de vuelta, cuyo paso siguiente consiste en presentarse físicamente en la dirección donde se recibió la postal, tomar una foto del lugar —el edificio, la casa de destino— y convertir esta imagen en una nueva tarjeta, que será enviada a Granada, a un apartado postal creado por la artista para la recepción de estos nuevos envíos. Así, el viaje que en principio parecía cerrado, que era un mero recordatorio cariñoso, cobra nueva vida y vuelve desde su destino, ya alejado en el tiempo, a la ciudad de la que provino, cerrando un círculo imposible, un recorrido evidentemente no planeado de antemano por el primer emisario de la tarjeta postal granadina.

The project that Andrea Canepa has devised for the Centro Federico García Lorca involves a two-way process. In a general sense, this process is about time and space, but on a much more specific level it refers to the city of Granada and to its visitors, which here take the form of tourists.

It all began with a collection of random postcards that had one thing in common: each reflected an image of the city of Granada. People who visited Granada at one time or another had sent these postcards to their loved ones in different places across Spain, and the artist picked them up at second-hand fairs and flea markets. These postal souvenirs, missives of endearment that have since fallen out of fashion, were turned around in Andrea Canepa’s work when she decided to track down the mailing addresses to which those cards were sent, the precise locations where they ended up. Then the return leg of the investigation began: her next step was to physically visit the address where each postcard had been received, take a picture of that place—the addressee’s building or house—and turn that photograph into a new card which was then mailed to Granada, to a post office box rented by the artist for the purpose of receiving these new deliveries. Thus, these simple tokens of affection, whose journeys had apparently come to an end, were given a new lease on life, returning from their long-ago destinations to the city from whence they came and so closing an impossible circle, an itinerary which the original senders of the Granada postcards obviously did not plan or even anticipate.

This type of research is not a new addition to the artist’s creative repertoire; in fact, it has long formed the basis of her modus operandi. The same is true of the concepts of fieldwork and the spatiotemporal amplification of supposedly closed or settled issues, as anyone familiar with earlier pieces like A Second Chance to Rephrase the Question (2013) is well aware. For that work, the artist purchased exquisite crossstitch embroideries which once adorned the walls of German homes but had sadly ended up in second-hand bins and flea markets. She then picked out the stitches and used the same original threads to devise new abstract patterns, the order of which depended entirely on the amount of available thread in each colour. As a result, the new compositions bear little resemblance to the landscapes that these little domestic squares of decorative fabric originally displayed.

Este tipo de trabajo de investigación, lejos de ser nuevo en el imaginario de la artista, constituye la base de su quehacer habitual. Y lo mismo la idea de trabajo de campo y la prolongación en el espacio y el tiempo de asuntos que se habían dado por cerrados, como sabrá quien conozca piezas suyas previas tales como A Second Chance to Rephrase the Question (2013). En este trabajo, los primorosos bordados de punto de cruz enmarcados que adornaron las paredes de las casas alemanas y acabaron tristemente en rastros y mercadillos de segunda mano son comprados por la artista para descoserlos y reconstruir, exactamente con los mismos hilos originales, unos nuevos patrones abstractos, cuyo orden viene dado solo por la cantidad de hilo de un mismo color y cuya iconografía resulta, por tanto, muy alejada de los paisajes originales que exhibían los cuadritos domésticos tejidos para decorar.

Otro de los aspectos recurrentes en la obra de Canepa es el interés en lo cartográfico, que aquí se visualiza a modo del recorrido de ida y vuelta implícito en este viaje postal investigado y completado que tiene tanta dosis de absurdo como de rigurosidad. En otros trabajos que incorporan estas cartografías simultáneamente absurdas y rigurosas, Canepa se ha interesado por las líneas de metro de las capitales europeas, ordenándolas en múltiples variantes posibles hasta llegar a crear mapas surrealistas, conformados por planos de color sin significado ninguno, que son de gran atractivo visual y de nula utilidad (The Lines, 2014). En Todas las calles del año, un trabajo comenzado en 2012 y todavía en proceso, la artista se interesa por organizar un calendario que incluya 365 calles de Latinoamérica denominadas por fechas que significaron algo lo suficientemente importante como para quedar fijadas, a modo de conmemoración, en el callejero de la ciudad de turno.

A Andrea Canepa le interesa jugar con la memoria y la desmemoria, se dedica a diseccionar lo establecido, lo que ya estaba acabado, cerrado y ordenado, olvidado incluso, como hace en la presente pieza al crear una nueva identidad a partir del simple elemento que es la tarjeta postal, encontrada no ya en su lugar de destino, sino en ubicaciones tan lejanas y ajenas a la dirección a la que fueron enviadas como un mercadillo, o, más extraño y anónimo todavía: compradas por internet.

En este trabajo hay una parte detectivesca, que surge como idea en la visita de exploración realizada por la artista a la ciudad de Granada y al Centro Federico García Lorca en busca de inspiración para hacer la pieza que aquí podemos ver terminada. Hay también otro aspecto de carácter lúdico. Y asimismo juega como elemento el recuerdo de hechos pasados, esos viajes anónimos a Granada de gente que no conocimos nunca.

Unos recuerdos que Canepa rescata del pasado al devolver estas postales a la ciudad de donde partieron en alguna fecha perdida en el tiempo, acompañadas de otras creadas por ella y que reflejan el lugar adonde llegaron, hilvanando así unas parejas acompañantes cuyo fin no tiene sentido práctico alguno, pero que adquieren una nueva vida a través de su trabajo.

El resultado es esta obra que surge de un viaje de expedición abstracto y a la vez romántico, de gran poética y delicado sentido del humor. El recuerdo no verdadero sino fantaseado, reconstruido mediante una nueva historia inventada por la artista, crea una cartografía de ida y vuelta perdida en el tiempo que es retomada y traída al presente, a un espacio de exposición en Granada, ciudad de la que partieron pero a la que nunca pensaron estas tarjetas postales que volverían.

Another recurring element in Canepa’s oeuvre is her interest in cartography, expressed here as the outbound and inbound routes of that researched and completed postal journey, absurd and rigorous in equal measure. In other pieces that employ the same ludicrous yet meticulous cartographic approach, Canepa focused on the underground or metro systems of Europe’s capital cities, using their lines to create multiple variations that ultimately yielded surrealistic maps of utterly meaningless colour codes, visually striking yet perfectly useless (The Lines, 2014). In Todas las calles del año [All the Streets of the Year], a work begun in 2012 and still in progress, the artist decided to create a calendar using 365 different streets in Latin America named after dates which, for one reason or another, were considered important enough to be immortalised on a town or city street map.

Andrea Canepa is interested in playing with the concepts of remembrance and forgetting. She has made it her mission to dissect that which is established, things that are already over and done, closed and filed away, and even forgotten, as she has done in this piece by forging a new identity from something as simple as a postcard—a postcard found not at its intended destination, but in farflung, random places like flea markets or, stranger and more anonymous still, on the internet.

This project has a Holmesian component, an idea that came to the artist during her first visit to the city of Granada and the Centro Federico García Lorca, searching for inspiration to create the finished piece we see here now. It also has a playful side and, on a third level, the artist delves into the memory of past events, those anonymous trips to Granada taken by people we have never met. Canepa resurrects those memories from the past by returning the postcards to the city from which they were sent at some distant time and pairing them with others of her own creation that reflect the place where they arrived, thus forming companion pieces with absolutely no practical purpose that nevertheless come to life again through her work.

The result is this piece, the product of an abstract yet romantic expeditionary journey steeped in poetry and subtly humorous. The memory of fantasy rather than truth, reconstructed in a new story of the artist’s own invention, creates a there-and-back-again cartography lost in time that is retrieved and brought into the present, to an exhibition venue in Granada, the city from which those postcards departed with no thought of ever returning.

La ciudad es el terreno de trabajo del portugués Mauro Cerqueira; la ciudad que ya no es un lugar del que escapar al campo, o ante cuya intensidad rebelarse. La metrópoli contemporánea es el mundo, allí donde la calle se mezcla con la vivienda, donde entrar y salir ya no tiene tanta importancia, porque, en el siglo XXI, el concepto de lo doméstico se está diluyendo. La ciudad es un libro abierto de historia, de tradiciones, de costumbres; en sus calles, en los recorridos de sus habitantes, lo social y lo político se gestan todos los días. Es el terreno de representación de lo real y lo artístico.

El contexto urbano, mutante por naturaleza, el trazado de la ciudad y todo lo que contiene, es algo que podemos catalogar como efímero y momentáneo, familiar y extraño, cotidiano y chocante, de espíritu colectivo e individualista, egoísta y generoso; en resumen, contradictorio y caótico. El trabajo de Mauro Cerquiera pertenece a las calles; de un modo cercano al del antropólogo, es estudioso de monumentos contemporáneos que no son los dedicados a un héroe que salvó la ciudad, sino al mendigo que resiste en el portal de un edificio que van a tirar abajo, a la familia a punto de ser desahuciada o al propio sistema de alcantarillado de la ciudad. Efectivamente, Cerqueira nos hace mirar no para otro lado, sino adonde tenemos que mirar: lo cotidiano que, por cercanía, se nos escapa; lo que, por feo e incómodo, no queremos ver, y menos aun porque está exactamente en un nuestro recorrido diario de casa al trabajo. Nos hace mirar hacia todo lo que pertenece al ámbito callejero, antes de que desaparezca o nos lo quiten.

La calle, en ciudades como Granada —u Oporto, lugar de residencia de Cerqueira—, es todavía ámbito de vida social, de encuentro, de actividad, una “extensión de los salones de las casas. Lugar donde escuchar música, bailar, compartir drogas, bebidas y meriendas, hacer negocios del tipo que sea, legales o ilegales... Un lugar

The city is Portuguese artist Mauro Cerqueira’s field of play and work. No longer a place from which to escape to the countryside or whose intensity inspires rebellion, the contemporary metropolis is the world, a place where the boundary between street life and home life is increasingly blurred, where it now makes little difference whether we are going out or coming in, because in the 21st century the concept of the domestic sphere is losing its definition. The city is an open book of history, traditions and customs; social and political realities are spawned each day on its streets, in the itineraries of its inhabitants. It is the stage on which reality and art are played out.

The urban context, mutant by definition, the lines of the city and all it contains, can be classified as ephemeral and momentary, familiar and strange, ordinary and shocking, collective and individualistic, selfish and generous—in short, contradictory and chaotic. Mauro Cerqueira’s work belongs to the street. Working like an anthropologist, he studies contemporary monuments that are not dedicated to the heroes who saved the city but to the beggars who endure in the doorways of condemned buildings, to families on the verge of eviction or even to the city’s own sewer system. Instead of letting us look away, Cerqueira makes us see what we need to see: the everyday reality whose very familiarity renders it invisible to us; the uncomfortable, ugly truths we would rather not see, especially because we encounter them each day on our way to work. He forces us to take in every aspect of life on the street, to notice them before they disappear or are taken from us.

In cities like Granada or Porto, where Cerqueira lives, the street is still a space of social interaction, encounter and activity. Cerqueira describes it as “an extension of our living rooms, a place where you can listen to music, dance, share drugs, drinks and afternoon snacks, make business deals of any kind, whether legal or illegal... A place where you can oppose and resist the privatisation of public space, sold to advertising, surveillance cameras, anti-homeless street furniture, etc.”

Redefining public and private space is the mission of the new century in which we live. It is becoming increasingly difficult to make a distinction between the art displayed “inside a venue” and that shown “outside in the street”. In Cerqueira’s case, although he works “outside” and shows what he does “inside” the halls of art, the now permeable barrier between these two spaces has rendered their differences irrelevant.

Lorca’s demise—that absurd, vengeful execution in the middle of the Spanish Civil War—loomed large in the investigations carried out by Mauro Cerqueira while preparing the piece for this show. Death, which for Lorca came at a time when his poetic creativity was in full bloom and public recognition of his genius was at an all-time high, is the conclusion of life, and this is another theme that fascinates Cerqueira: decay and decline, the end, unceremonious disposal. White marble, the star material in this installation, becomes a symbol of the attributes of purity, immaculacy and innocence associated with Federico,

who moved to Granada from Madrid even though his friends advised him not to, sensing—futuring?—the threat of imminent death that awaited him there. Here that white marble symbolises death due to its common association with gravestones, the markers which represent all that remains of an entombed person’s memory: a name and a set of dates chiselled onto a durable surface, details of the ephemeral written on the substance of the eternal.

In Cerqueira’s installation, spectators are free to search for meaning. In his research the artist branched out in several different directions, compiling data gleaned from his

donde resistir a la privatización del espacio público, vendido a la publicidad, a las cámaras de vigilancia, al mobiliario urbano antimendigos, etc.“, dice Cerqueira.

Redefinir el lugar público y el privado es tarea de este nuevo siglo en el que vivimos. La diferencia entre el arte “dentro de un centro“ y “fuera, en la calle“ empieza a ser totalmente confusa. Digamos, centrándonos en Cerqueira, que, si bien trabaja “fuera“ y muestra lo que hace “dentro“ del lugar artístico, la permeabilidad que hoy existe entre ambos espacios hace que la diferencia entre ellos deje de ser relevante.

En las investigaciones que Mauro Cerqueira ha llevado a cabo para la realización de la pieza que presenta en esta exposición, juega un cierto protagonismo la muerte de Lorca, esa ejecución absurda y vengativa que tuvo lugar en plena Guerra Civil española. La muerte —en el caso de Lorca, en un momento de auge creativo imparable del poeta y de máximo reconocimiento público a su figura— es conclusión de la vida, y este es otro tema que interesa a Cerqueira: la degradación, el final, el desecho sin contemplaciones. Así, el mármol blanco, protagonista de esta instalación, se convierte en elemento representativo de la pureza, limpieza e inocencia atribuibles a Federico, que se trasladó a Granada desde Madrid cuando sus amigos le aconsejaron no hacerlo, intuyendo —¿futurando?— el peligro de una muerte cercana en la ciudad de destino. Este mármol blanco es aquí también símbolo de muerte, en alusión al utilizado en las lápidas, lo que queda de la memoria de una persona en un sepulcro: un nombre y unas fechas cincelados sobre una superficie perdurable. Lo efímero de los datos marcado sobre lo eterno del material.

En la instalación de Cerqueira, el espectador puede buscar libremente un significado. El autor ha indagado en distintas direcciones y ha ido recopilando datos, a través de lecturas de la obra de Lorca y sobre la Guerra Civil española. También pateándose Granada, fotografiando y rodando por sus calles; buscando y hurgando en lo que para él era nuevo; explorando en todas las posibles capas de información ligadas a una ciudad en transformación constante, que acumula un peso de historia brutal ya sea en lo arquitectónico, en la huella de sus diferentes habitantes a lo largo de los tiempos, en las celebraciones religiosas o en la música, tan especial en Granada. Y plantea una visión propia, particular, a partir de los estratos de datos acumulados, que son de carácter indisciplinar a la vez que de naturaleza experimental. Así, el artista vuelca en el suelo de la sala de exposiciones del Centro Federico García Lorca lo que ha percibido, que es material e inmaterial, físico y sensorial, para intentar ordenarlo, asimilarlo, y continuar su estudio. Lo que se muestra es, por tanto, un potencial de información con posibilidades de conclusión, un trabajo que, en este momento, está abierto, esperando un feedback del espectador.

Abarcarlo todo es imposible. Los objetos encontrados y catalogados dan pistas, pero la investigación no ha terminado. De momento, Cerquiera es testigo y recolector de datos encriptados, que guardan una memoria emocional cargada de tintes que oscilan entre la nostalgia y la realidad cotidiana. Datos del pasado y del presente, estratos trucados, mezclados y alejados de su contexto real. Al presentarlos clasificados en una etnología caótica, como elementos de un trabajo de campo revuelto, el artista juega con una estructura narrativa incompleta cuyo significado queda abierto y se materializa en una instalación que necesita de la lectura del público para completarse, tanto textual como visualmente. He also gathered information by tramping about Granada, snapping photographs and wandering its streets, searching and delving into a place that was new to him, exploring all possible layers of information about a constantly changing city bowed by the staggering weight of a history that survives in its architecture, in the traces left by its inhabitants through the centuries, in its religious celebrations and in Granada’s special relationship with music. Based on the strata of accumulated data, both interdisciplinary and experimental, Cerqueira came up with his own personal vision. Consequently, what we see on the floor of the gallery in the Centro Federico García Lorca is the sum of the artist’s material and immaterial, physical and sensory perceptions, which he has attempted to organise, assimilate and continue to analyse. What we see is therefore information with the potential to reach a conclusion, a work which at this point is still open-ended, waiting for the audience’s feedback.

It is impossible to take it all in. The found and inventoried objects provide certain clues, but the investigation has not yet run its course. For now, Cerqueira is simply a witness and gatherer of encrypted data, and locked inside is an emotional memory charged with nuances that range from nostalgia to everyday reality: data from the past and the present, layers that have been rigged, jumbled and removed from their real context. In classifying them into a chaotic ethnology, like elements of a topsy-turvy fieldwork project, the artist weaves and plays with an incomplete narrative structure whose meaning is left open to interpretation and which materialises in an installation that needs to be read, both textually and visually, by an audience in order to achieve completion—in a word, futuring.

Miki Leal, catalogado como pintor figurativo con una veta pop y surrealista, asume también en su trabajo otras diversas influencias estilísticas que hacen que la clasificación anterior deje de tener sentido. Entre los temas que le atraen para dibujar, no solo están el entorno familiar y doméstico, lo onírico, su pasión por diversos géneros musicales y cierta tendencia a representar personajes icónicos de nuestro mundo; hay también otro aspecto que surge de vez en cuando y que, en el caso de su pieza para esta exposición, se convierte en protagonista: el grafismo, aunque no literalmente referido a la representación de signos, sino a piezas de diseño creadas a partir de elementos geométricos —léase azulejos, mosaicos, terrazos y otros solados compuestos de dibujos que se repiten en esquemas—. Y, junto a ese grafismo, le interesa cómo el tiempo pasa por encima de estos elementos, su uso y desgaste, su erosión y supervivencia, que los hace devenir en hallazgos pictóricos de interés. Este recurso estético surge de manera quizás inevitable y podemos relacionarlo con su origen sevillano —Miki Leal se crió rodeado de azulejos, por incidir en el tópico.

Esta recreación colorista, geométrica y de texturas, que aparece y desaparece ocasionalmente en sus pinturas, se hace ahora bien patente en la secuencia de dibujos que componen la obra que el artista ha creado para presentar en el Centro Federico García Lorca: un trampantojo lorquiano que tiene como conductor de su inspiración al propio poeta, cuyo espíritu es trasladado de la casa familiar en la Huerta de San Vicente al centro de la ciudad para pasear por la obra del pintor. Un trabajo sugerente, evocador, cargado de emoción y lirismo.

En palabras del propio artista: “Mi pintura ha ido evolucionando en los últimos tiempos hacia un interés por los márgenes frente al motivo central. Esos espacios silenciosos del cuadro, aparentemente sin final, me permiten una mirada curiosa sobre elementos tal vez anecdóticos pero de gran importancia para mí por su utilidad para la representación gráfica del paso del tiempo“.

En una visita a la Huerta de San Vicente, Miki Leal queda fascinado por las huellas del espíritu lorquiano en la casa familiar. En un recorrido continuo, de la entrada a la salida, registra los diversos suelos que se aprecian a lo largo de la sucesión de las estancias, según las funciones domésticas que estas acogen, suelos que ahora reciben los pasos de los visitantes en las incesantes visitas guiadas que allí tienen lugar y en las que, en sus tres cuartos de hora de duración, podemos impregnarnos del ambiente que en esa vivienda existió en vida de Federico. En ese recorrido como visitantes, pensamos en cuando Lorca caminaba por la casa, se sentaba en su cuarto a escribir, tocaba el piano en el salón, desayunaba en la cocina o almorzaba en el comedor...

Se trata, para el público, de un recorrido con orden obligado y que coincide exactamente con el que propone la visita virtual en la página web de la Huerta de

Though classified as a figurative painter with a Surrealist Pop streak, Miki Leal’s work incorporates a variety of other stylistic influences that render this classification moot. He likes to draw themes related to family and domestic life, dreams, his passion for diverse types of music and his penchant for depicting iconic personalities of our world. Yet he has another interest that surfaces occasionally and, in the case of this exhibition, takes centre stage: graphics. In his case this term does not literally refer to the representation of graphic signs but to designer creations made out of geometric elements, specifically wall tiles, mosaic tiles, terrazzo and other flooring materials consisting of drawings repeated in patterns. In addition to graphics, he is fascinated by the effects of time on these elements: the wear and tear, erosion and endurance that turns them into curious pictorial finds. This aesthetic device came about almost inevitably and can be linked to the artist’s Seville upbringing: Miki Leal was raised among the decorative tiles that are part of the city’s stereotypical image.

This colourful, geometric, textured recreation which surfaces from time to time in his paintings is boldly present in the series of drawings he has created to present at the Centro Federico García Lorca: a Lorquian trompe-l’oeil that takes its inspiration from the poet himself, whose spirit is summoned from his family home in Huerta de San Vicente and brought to the centre of town to stroll through the painter’s creation. It is a suggestive, evocative work, steeped in emotion and lyricism.

San Vicente: exterior, entrada-recibidor, comedor, cocina, salón del piano, escalera, dormitorio de Lorca y, por último, la habitación del fondo de la planta alta que ahora funciona como sala de exposiciones temporales.

Sin embargo, Miki Leal prefiere fijarse en cosas distintas a las que el guía indica al grupo que recorre la casa durante la visita. El artista escucha, pero, al mismo tiempo, está pensando y mirando más allá de lo que le cuentan y ve, o por debajo de ello...; está atento a ese caminar de Lorca por la casa, a sus huellas.

Las texturas de los suelos de la construcción, diferentes en cada estancia y ahora desgastados por el

paso del tiempo y el de miles de pisadas, saltan de la casa de verano de la familia del poeta a las paredes de la sala de exposiciones del Centro Federico García Lorca en la plaza de la Romanilla, que acoge una secuencia de dibujos donde el albero del patio de entrada es el que abre paso al interior de la casa. A partir de ahí se suceden los esquemas geométricos de las baldosas hidráulicas; continúa un ajedrezado de cenefa; sigue el barro verde de la cocina... En este recorrido entre lo geométrico y lo mínimo del dibujo, junto a los surcos del desgaste provocado por los pasos, el solado entero de la casa se recompone en trazado mural. En el lenguaje del dibujo, trazo y línea se unen al color para crear la composición; sencillos elementos con los que cuenta el pintor para narrar su historia, que, en el caso de Miki Leal, oculta tanto como enseña, porque todo lo que pasa por su cabeza no puede ser representado, son demasiadas historias. El artista se contiene y las retiene, mostrando una parte, tan importante como la otra, solo sugerida; y es esa parte la que queda en suspenso para que la finalice el espectador, al que le da pistas, pero no todas, en imágenes fluidas y precisas.

Un homenaje a Lorca a partir y a través de su casa familiar, del seguimiento de sus pasos y sus huellas, que se convierte en un recorrido poético para ser leído ordenadamente, de principio a fin, como un poema en estrofas, desde la entrada en la Huerta de San Vicente hasta la salida de la misma, siguiendo el camino que el poeta trazaba día tras día en su vivienda, en su quehacer doméstico. Un camino que el visitante podía hasta ahora solo remedar in situ, con la mirada cuidadosamente puesta en el suelo, para no tropezarse ni pisar donde no se debe, y que en esta pieza se ve elevado a la pared, trazado sobre el papel.

In the artist’s own words, “My painting has evolved in recent years towards an interest in the margins rather than the central motif. Those silent, seemingly endless areas of the picture offer me a curious insight into elements which may be incidental but to me are of the utmost importance, because I can use them to graphically represent the passage of time.”

When he visited Huerta de San Vicente, Miki Leal was captivated by the vestiges of the Lorquian spirit that seem to haunt the poet’s family home. As he made a full circuit of the house, he noticed the different types of floors found in the rooms he passed through, each reflecting the erstwhile domestic functions of that particular space. These same floors are now trodden by countless visitors on an endless succession of guided tours, which in three quarters of an hour allow us to soak up the atmosphere that pervaded this house in Federico’s lifetime. As visitors on this tour, we imagine the days when Lorca strode through the house, sat in his room to write, played the piano in the parlour, ate breakfast in the kitchen or lunched in the dining room...

The public must follow an itinerary that takes them through the rooms in a certain order, identical to the one followed in the virtual tour on the Huerta de San Vicente website: grounds, entrance hall, dining room, kitchen, music parlour, staircase, Lorca’s bedroom and, finally, the back room on the top floor, now used as a temporary exhibition hall. However, instead of focusing on the things pointed out by the guide as the group toured the house, Miki Leal turned his attention elsewhere. He listened, but meanwhile he was thinking and looking beyond what he was told and shown— or, more accurately, beneath, concentrating on Lorca’s strides through the house, on his footprints.

The textures of the building’s floors, different in each room and worn by the ravages of time and thousands of footsteps, have leapt from the poet’s family summer home on to the gallery walls at the Centro Federico García Lorca in Granada’s Plaza de la Romanilla. Here we see a series of drawings where the packed dirt surface of the front courtyard ushers us into the house’s interior, which leads to a sequence of geometric patterns lifted from the cement floor tiles, continues with a checkerboard frieze and is followed by the green clay floor of the kitchen... In this journey through the geometric and minimal interstices of drawing, along with the furrows worn by a thousand feet, the entire floor of the house is recomposed in a mural layout. In the language of drawing, stroke and line unite with colour to create a composition: simple resources that painters use to tell their stories which, in Miki Leal’s case, conceal as much as they reveal, because he cannot convey everything that crosses his mind. The stories are too numerous to count, much less tell. The artist checks himself and holds back his resources, showing one part and only faintly hinting at the rest, though both are equally important. That other part is left hanging, unresolved, to be completed by the audience, who are given clues (but not answers) in the flowing, precise images.

This piece is a tribute to Lorca by and through his family home, an attempt to trace his footsteps and his presence that becomes a poetic itinerary designed to be read in order, from start to finish, like a poem in stanzas, from the moment we enter his house in Huerta de San Vicente until we leave, following the same path that the poet walked day after day as he went about his domestic affairs. A path which, up until now, visitors could only experience in situ, eyes carefully fixed on the floor to avoid tripping or stepping in the wrong place, has now been lifted on to the wall and laid out on paper.

El área de recepción a un edificio marca su carácter, es donde apreciamos las pautas que nos indican a qué está dedicado. Es asimismo zona de bienvenida, primer ámbito de socialización. Como tal, la entrada al Centro Federico García Lorca es un espacio de movimiento y circulación, de una primera toma de contacto con su potente arquitectura, cuyo orden constructivo se expande en vertical, de forma que el área de recepción es centro de unión de los dos bloques que conforman el edificio.

Apreciando en este espacio un gran potencial como generador de pensamiento artístico, Juan López lo elige como enclave para su intervención, en la que plantea un giro respecto a lo ya creado por el arquitecto, buscando cómo prolongar un trabajo que, precisamente por entenderse como terminado, mueve al artista a jugar con ello, a ceder a la tentación de incorporar algo más.

El carácter urbano de las intervenciones de Juan López ha sido en ocasiones tan explícito como en las piezas donde el protagonista es el uso del grafiti; en otras, este aspecto aparece de forma más sutil y ligado definitivamente a la arquitectura, como viene mostrando, de forma mucho más experimental, en sus últimos trabajos, donde se diluyen las líneas entre interior y exterior.

Una mirada y una mentalidad abierta son las premisas de su obra; un primer pensamiento, un fogonazo de inspiración, sirve para hacer detonar la pieza a realizar: un anuncio callejero, una pintada anónima en un muro, una anomalía o defecto arquitectónico, una pared con una textura determinada, son todos elementos interesantes para el arranque del trabajo específico.

En su caso, el proceso de activación en el trabajo sobre el espacio suele partir de una cierta intención de rectificar lo hecho, lo arquitectónicamente cerrado, cambiando el resultado original, aunque sea en apariencia, mediante la generación de relaciones espaciales dislocadas, juegos metaarquitectónicos que, ya sea enfatizando la réplica o el contraste, ponen al espectador ante una suerte de trampantojo que desencadena en él el interrogante sobre lo que es original y lo que es falso.

Juan López se preocupa de la relación que se entabla entre la obra de arte, el espacio construido y la reacción ante ellos por parte del visitante. Y lo hace desde la óptica de que el confinamiento que conllevan los muros de un edificio está para romperse con la fantasía de una obra de arte, y que es trabajo del artista transformar esa ruptura en una conversación, un diálogo completo con el espacio; crear una interacción significativa con el lugar, ya sea en modo de réplica o mímica, o en una forma intermedia que abarque ambas posibilidades. López desarrolla un deseo de involucrar al público de una manera activa más allá de la contemplación, combinando lo artístico con lo social, transformando el espacio de arte en un lugar donde algo más ocurra: digamos que le interesa más un debate en el ágora que el público estático de un museo.

The entryway of a building is a character statement, offering clues that tell us about its use and purpose. It is also a space of welcome, the first circle of socialisation. The entrance to the Centro Federico García Lorca is a space of movement and circulation, an introduction to its powerful architecture defined by a vertical structural order, making the reception area a nexus between the two blocks that form the building.

Perceiving the enormous potential of this space to stimulate artistic reflection, Juan López chose it as the site for an intervention in which he proposes a twist on the architect’s existing creation. López has attempted to create an extension of the architecture, motivated by its very consideration as a “finished” work to play about with it and yield to the temptation to add something more.

Sometimes the urban nature of Juan López’s interventions is explicit, as in the works where he makes heavy use of graffiti; at other times, it is only a subtle presence inseparably linked to architecture, something we see in his much more experimental recent works, where the dividing line between interior and exterior is blurred. of inspiration is all he needs to ignite the spark of a new piece: an outdoor advertisement, anonymous graffiti on the wall, an architectural flaw or anomaly, a wall with a certain texture— anything can serve as the catalyst for a specific piece.

In his case, the activation process of a site-specific work usually begins with the desire to rectify what has already been done, to reopen an architectural closed case and change the original outcome, albeit in appearance only, by creating dislocated spatial relationships. These metaarchitectural games, which may rely on response or contrast, present viewers with a kind of trompe-l’oeil that makes them wonder which part is original and which is fake.

Juan López explores the relationship that is forged between the work of art, the built space and the visitors’ reaction to both. He is driven by the conviction that the confinement imposed by a building’s walls exists to be broken by the fantasy of a work of art, and that it is the artist’s job to turn that breakage into a conversation, a complete dialogue with the space—to create a meaningful

entre lo estrictamente arquitectónico y la experiencia subjetiva que esa estructura construida suscita. En un acercamiento cuidadosamente planeado, busca una cartografía que genere un nuevo e inesperado lenguaje. Entre el instinto y la racionalidad, encuentra los dobleces de lo existente, de manera que lo que había acaba convirtiéndose temporalmente en algo diferente.

En palabras del propio artista: “Una intervención mínima, que simula el giro de las paredes de la sala. Hasta ahora, las intervenciones murales precedentes a la aquí presentada pretendían realizar juegos visuales sobre la arquitectura a modo de boceto, utilizando las paredes como hojas en blanco sobre las que proponer ideas, simulando las tres dimensiones con dibujos materializados con cinta aislante y asumiéndolos en su resultado casi como imposibles de realizar. En esta nueva propuesta se incorporan elementos tridimensionales a este ‘dibujo’ sobre el muro, generando volumen y ayudando a que la sensación de realidad en esta acción sea mayor.

El giro como sinónimo de la acción de cambiar algo, como indicador del momento en el que se aplica una nueva mirada o enfoque al muro existente: rotar, voltear, rodar, virar, torcer, doblar, volver”.

En suma, falsear el muro sin que deje de parecer real. “¿Estaba así?, ¿qué ha pasado?“ son preguntas que el espectador se hará al contemplar este trabajo al que, muy inteligentemente, el propio artista denomina “acción“.

Dice Gilles Deleuze: “Ser sensible a los signos, considerar el mundo como cosa a descifrar, es sin duda un don. Pero este don correría el riesgo de quedar sepultado en nosotros mismos si no hiciéramos los encuentros necesarios; y estos encuentros carecerían de efecto si no llegáramos a vencer ciertas creencias estereotipadas“. Unas palabras que aplicamos al trabajo de Juan López, a su creación de fracturas colaborativas, nunca fuera de sintonía, sino en relación con el espacio donde suceden, cuyas propiedades físicas se hacen, en virtud de esa intervención, más tangibles y visibles para el espectador. Se trata de liberar —de manera ficticia y temporal— a la arquitectura de sus ataduras reales, de crear desorden en el orden establecido.

interaction with the chosen site, phrased as a rejoinder, an imitation or something halfway between the two. López acts on his desire for an actively involved rather than passively contemplative audience, creating overlaps between the social and artistic domains and turning the space of art into a place where things happen; we might say he is more interested in a lively debate in the forum than in the stationary observation of the museum-going crowd.

He therefore develops a physical extension of the structure where his piece unfolds, testing the relationship between the strictly architectural and the subjective experience which that built structure elicits. It is a carefully planned approach, attempting to draw a map that will generate a new and unexpected language. Moving between instinct and rationality, he finds the folds and creases in an existing reality, temporarily turning what was there into something different.

In the artist’s own words, it is “a minimal intervention that simulates the bend of the gallery walls. Up until now, my previous mural interventions have tried to play visual games using the architecture as a rough model, regarding the walls as blank pages on which I could outline ideas, simulating the three dimensions with drawings made of electrical tape and, in light of the outcome, accepting that they are virtually impossible to produce. In this new project, I have added threedimensional elements to that ‘drawing’ on the wall, creating volume and heightening the sense of realism in this action. I think of the bend as a synonym for the action of changing something, as an indication of the moment when the existing wall is seen from a new perspective or angle: rotate, flip, roll, turn, twist, double back, return.”

In short, he falsifies the wall yet still manages to make it look real. Visitors are bound to ask themselves, “Was it always like this? What happened?” when they see this work, which the artist intelligently refers to as an “action”.

As Gilles Deleuze wrote, “To be sensitive to signs, to consider the world as an object to be deciphered, is doubtless a gift. But this gift risks remaining buried in us if we do not make the necessary encounters, and these encounters would remain ineffective if we failed to overcome certain stock notions.” Deleuze’s words are well-

suited to Juan López’s work and the collaborative fractures he creates, never out of sync with but in relation to the space where they occur, thereby rendering the physical properties of that space more tangible and visible to spectators. His goal is to free—if only fictionally and temporarily—the architecture from its real fetters, to create chaos in the established order.

El teatro puede considerarse una de las artes más antiguas inventadas por la humanidad y, entre todas ellas, la que más rápido desarrollo cobró, por su pluralidad como arte del espectáculo, de visibilidad coral y participativa, debido a su fácil comprensión, tan directa como popular. Por su parte, el lenguaje relativo a lo escénico comprende un amplio y rico mundo de vocabulario que ya proviene de los griegos, como la palabra escena; que se incrementa con el latín gracias a su presencia y auge en la civilización romana —candilejas, espectador, platea—, y que siguió incorporando palabras de otros idiomas: atrezo, bambalinas, etc.

Federico García Lorca, cuya obra teatral es tan importante como la poética, era un gran apasionado del teatro desde su infancia y en todas sus facetas, desde

la más popular, como el guiñol y los títeres de cachiporra, hasta ampliar su gusto al repertorio escénico más trascendental y dramático.

En la pieza que ha creado para el escenario del auditorio del Centro Federico García Lorca, Maider López conjuga elementos anteriormente presentes en su extensa carrera artística junto con otros que son específicamente dedicados a Lorca, en un homenaje que es performance, representación escénica participativa y, finalmente, rodaje que permite la perpetuidad de la obra creada, más allá de la habitual experiencia en directo del teatro.

La artista describe su pieza de la siguiente manera: Un escenario vacío y un juego de telones de colores.

Theatre can be considered one of the oldest arts invented by humankind, and it certainly evolved more rapidly than any other thanks to its plurality as a visibly collective and participatory art of the spectacular, easy to understand in its directness and popular appeal. The language of the stage is a deep, rich ocean of vocabulary inherited from the Greeks, like the word “scene”, augmented with the rise and spread of Latin throughout the Roman world (orchestra, spectator, proscenium) and repeatedly enriched by words borrowed from other languages: luminaire, pantomime, etc.

Federico García Lorca, whose work as a playwright rivalled his efforts as a poet, was passionate about the theatre from early childhood. He loved all of its facets, from the simple, universal appeal of Guignol or Punch and Judy shows to the most profound, sophisticated stage dramas.

In the piece she has created for the stage of the auditorium at the Centro Federico García Lorca, Maider López has combined elements from earlier works produced in the course of her long artistic career with specific references to Lorca. This personal tribute is a performance, a participatory play and, ultimately, a film shoot that will allow her work to endure longer than the average live theatre experience.

The artist describes her piece in the following words: An empty stage and a set of multicoloured curtains.

The curtain rises: empty stage.

The curtain falls.

The curtain rises: blue background.

The curtain rises slowly and stops halfway: red below, blue above.

The curtain rises: red background.

The curtain rises: green background.

The curtain falls: red background.

The curtain rises: a small yellow strip against a green background.

A theatre without actors. A stage without a scene. The curtains fill the entire stage. A stage that denies the purpose of the traditional set, for its purpose has ceased to exist. The curtain is no longer a transitional element between scenes; it has ceased to conceal what goes on behind it, instead becoming an act in itself. A play consisting entirely of rising and falling curtains that create infinite colour combinations. A diversity of rhythms and movements that facilitate chance encounters between the different curtains and colours.

The piece was performed once and filmed to make a video that will be on display during the exhibition, and while the show is open it may be performed live again on the same very same stage, thereby perpetuating its presence.

Maider López uses an extraordinarily rich variety of media, formats and settings in her work, where colour often plays a strong leading role. “The paint leapt out of the picture and invaded the surrounding space; in fact, I began to take an interest in what was going on outside rather than inside the frame. That’s how I began to focus on space.”

La pieza se representa una primera vez y es rodada como documento que se proyecta en vídeo durante la exposición, con la posibilidad de repetirse en directo durante el tiempo de la muestra en el mismo escenario donde tuvo lugar, reiterando su presencia.

El trabajo de Maider López, de gran riqueza y diversidad en lo referente a soportes y escenarios de presentación, tiene muy a menudo el color como poderoso protagonista: “la pintura se salió del propio cuadro e invadió el espacio; de hecho, me empezó a interesar lo que pasaba fuera del cuadro en vez de lo que sucedía en él. Así empecé a ocuparme del espacio“. Y del efecto y la importancia del cromatismo en el espacio, podemos añadir. Los colores que Maider López utiliza son básicamente primarios, coincidentes con los usados en señalética, como elementos para llamar la atención del público. Y estos elementos están, en la obra de la artista, intrínsecamente relacionados con la arquitectura para la que son creados, emitiendo mensajes funcionales relacionados con la seguridad, la circulación y otras necesidades generales de un edificio abierto al uso del público.

Retomamos unas palabras de Estrella de Diego sobre el trabajo de la artista, escritas con motivo de una pieza realizada en el año 2003 para La Casa Encendida en Madrid: “[...] estos toldos-bandera tienen una función, una misión casi se diría, capaz de implicar al observador, quien en un principio se había quedado atrapado por los colores brillantes y cambiantes, que daban movilidad al estatismo de la fachada, y de pronto se siente intrigado y se pregunta por el significado oculto de esa intervención [...] Maider López juega a supeditarse a las formas, las líneas, los colores, los ritmos de los colores, en estrategias de representación“.

Con la pieza de Maider López se activa la primera representación en el teatro del Centro Federico García Lorca, a la que sucederán muchas otras en las que la palabra y los actores serán habituales. Pero, en esta primerísima acción teatral, el escenario vacío se llena con esta performance escénica, donde, por una vez, los protagonistas son los telones, que, en lo sucesivo, subirán y bajarán regularmente, volviendo a su función elemental de marcar el principio, quizás el entreacto, y el final de una representación.

El público, la obra de teatro que Federico García Lorca escribió en 1930 —una de las más difíciles y misteriosas de su producción—, tiene mucho de lúdico, de juego surrealista, de imágenes en distintos planos conceptuales de representación; está llena de sorpresas que van sucediéndose, escenas que se van desvelando en la propia secuencia de la obra. De contenido mágico y transgresor, es una pieza dominada por lo onírico. En confrontación-homenaje con ella, Maider López crea para el auditorio del centro una representación donde la complejidad de la obra de Lorca queda traducida al lenguaje directo de los colores básicos de los telones —rojo, azul, verde y amarillo— y su juego escénico. Un lenguaje cromático perfectamente estructurado que transmite un mensaje mudo, rotundo y claro.

And, we might add, on the effect and importance of colour in space. Maider López essentially uses primary colours— which also happen to be the standard palette of signage— as elements designed to grab the audience’s attention. In the artist’s oeuvre, these elements are intrinsically related to the architecture for which they were created, conveying practical messages about safety, foot traffic and other basic requirements of a building open to the public.

Estrella de Diego, writing about a piece López created for La Casa Encendida in Madrid in 2003, offered an insightful commentary on the artist’s work: “[...] these awning-flags have a purpose, which we might even call a mission, capable of drawing spectators in; at first they are captivated by the bright, changing colours that lend the rigid facade a sense of motion, and suddenly they become intrigued and start to wonder about the hidden meaning of that intervention [...]. Maider López feigns submission to forms, lines, colours and the rhythms of colours in strategies of representation.”

Maider López’s piece is the first to appear in the theatre of the Centro Federico García Lorca, and it will soon be followed by many others in which words and actors will be standard fare. However, in this very first theatrical action, the empty stage is filled with a performance where, for once, the lead roles are played by curtains—the same curtains that will henceforth rise and fall with regularity and go back to fulfilling their basic purpose, signalling the beginning and end, and perhaps the intermission, of a show.

In 1930 Federico García Lorca wrote a play entitled The Public, one of his most challenging and enigmatic works. The piece is pervaded by a spirit of playfulness, Surrealist games and images on different conceptual levels of representation; it is an endless string of surprises, scenes revealed in the play’s own sequence of events. The magical, transgressive lines of the play are delivered in a permanent oneiric haze. In contrast/homage to this work, Maider López has devised a performance for the centre’s auditorium where the complexity of Lorca’s play is translated into the straightforward language of the curtains’ basic colours— red, blue, green and yellow—and their interactive stage game. And that perfectly structured chromatic language silently conveys a resounding, crystal-clear message.

Entre las múltiples cualidades del dibujo, está la de ser una herramienta de acercamiento inmediato al pensamiento con la que materializar ideas, haciendo visible lo abstracto. Traslada al plano visual un proceso cognoscitivo, creando una vía que no necesita de palabras, pese a ser una proposición plena de comunicación. Si está en un lugar público, el dibujo, además de todo lo anterior, es capaz de abrir un proceso de debate y opinión.

El trabajo de Maciá parte de una intuición, una palpitación generada por el espacio a intervenir. El uso del dibujo en sus piezas, como propuesta primera de presentación, ya es una motivación que viene desarrollada por el propio lugar y su significado. El resultado ha de ser, para él, perfecto, claro y contundente: no existen medias tintas en su trabajo. Necesita que sea fuerte el desafío que le propone el lugar a intervenir, e igualmente potente será el resultado de ese envite, tanto en su mensaje como en su ejecución. Cuando tanto se habla de pintura y dibujo expandidos, el artista se refiere a ello como “ponerle barreras, cortarle las alas“ a estos soportes. Y también explica: “Me interesan los espacios frontera o límite. Lugares indefinidos, difusos y poco claros donde creo que se acomoda mi trabajo“.

Esa tensión necesaria en su obra se podría identificar como una comodidad en los lugares incómodos, que no son aptos para todos los artistas.

Las intervenciones de Maciá muestran una energía en el espacio, una síntesis del fluido pictórico que nos da una nueva visión del lugar donde se presentan. La escala del proyecto y la potencia del dibujo representado dotan al espacio, por su mera presencia, de una poderosa fuerza física, potenciando la arquitectura existente y expandiendo los límites de la superficie constructiva.

El significado de Markers, un título que se repite a lo largo de la obra de Maciá, se refiere a esa llamada de atención excepcional en el espacio arquitectónico, ya sea interior o exterior. Marker es un rotulador, pero también una señal que quiere remitirnos a algo, y nunca de forma sutil, sino de manera enfática. Y aunque estos Markers son concretamente piezas de modalidad escultórica, realizadas en aluminio plegado recubierto de pintura esmaltada, esa denominación tiene validez para el resto de sus trabajos. Porque las obras de Maciá son marcas de visibilidad extrema en el espacio, piezas que incorporan como parte de sí mismas la superficie en la que están realizadas, de forma que, lejos de ignorar el fondo sobre el que se trabaja, actúan sobre él enfatizándolo. Se trata de obras que, a pesar de su aparente espontaneidad y frescura visual, siguen un plan escrupulosamente trazado, han sido cuidadosamente pensadas tanto en su elaboración como de cara a la percepción por parte del espectador.

Y ello incluso teniendo en cuenta su temporalidad limitada, dado que son producidas específicamente para lugares donde la condición es que luego vuelvan a su ser anterior, como es el caso en este Centro Federico García Lorca en Granada.

One of drawing’s many merits is its usefulness as a tool for directly tapping into thoughts and materialising ideas, making the abstract visible. It transfers a cognitive process to the visual plane, creating a conduit which, though fully intended to communicate, has no need for words. When done in a public place, in addition to all of the above, drawing is even able to create a forum of debate and opinion.

Maciá’s works begin with a hunch, an intuitive feeling inspired by his chosen space. The use of drawing in his pieces, as an introductory calling card, is something motivated by the place itself and its meaning. For him, the outcome must always be perfect, clear and emphatic: there are no half measures in his art. He needs a site that will throw down the gauntlet to him forcefully, and his response to that challenge will be equally powerful in both its message and manner of execution. Today, when everyone is talking about expanded painting and drawing, the artist describes it as “throwing up obstacles, clipping the wings” of those media. He also explains, “I’m interested in frontier or border zones— undefined, vague, unclear places where I think my work belongs.” We might describe that necessary tension in his work as the ability to be comfortable in uncomfortable places, not suitable for all artists.

Maciá’s interventions reveal an energy in space, a synthesis of the pictorial flow that alters our perception of the place where they are presented. The sheer size of his project and the power of his drawing, by the mere fact of their presence, multiply the space’s physical force exponentially, augmenting the pre-existing architecture and expanding the boundaries of the usable floor area.

Markers, a title used repeatedly in Maciá’s oeuvre, is a reference to that exceptional wake-up call in an architectural space, whether interior or exterior. Marker is another word for a felt-tip pen, but it can also mean a sign that draws our attention to something, and in this sense it is always blatant, never subtle. Although these particular Markers are sculptural pieces made of folded aluminium sheets with a coating of enamel paint, the name could easily be applied to the rest of his creations because Maciá’s works are highly

En esta exposición, Maciá presenta dos intervenciones: Cuña, en la entrada del Centro Federico García Lorca, y Pasadizo, en un pasillo de tránsito dentro del mismo. Así se refiere a ellas el propio artista: Cuña: La fachada del edificio, su orientación y forma, recoge hacia la entrada toda la energía que desprende un monumento tan simbólico como es la catedral de Granada. Y ordena las direcciones visuales de la plaza de la Romanilla hacia su fachada. Aquí se dispone un gran paño de hormigón suspendido que, a modo de cuña, contiene el edificio. Este módulo es visualmente muy potente y encaja a la perfección con mis intervenciones espaciales, en las que trastorno la arquitectura por medio de acciones invasivas o expansivas.

Pasadizo: La rareza del edificio es una sala acorazada que, a modo de archivo, se sitúa en la segunda planta. Para acceder a ella debemos atravesar un peculiar pasillo que nos lleva desde el cuerpo central del edificio hacia el acceso a esta sala. Realizo una intervención basada en el atascamiento de una pieza de mi serie Markers, que consiste en planchas de aluminio lacadas industrialmente que doblo, arrugo y pliego con la propia fuerza de mi cuerpo para conformar unas estructuras tridimensionales que pinto a posteriori con rotuladores industriales. Aprovecho el paño inclinado de uno de los lados del pasillo para apoyar en él la pieza y que esta fugue, en una suerte de equilibrio casi imposible.

Un gesto gráfico, pictórico, escultórico que, al entrar en diálogo con una arquitectura concreta, tiene como resultado creativo para el público visitante del lugar una experiencia en la que el poder de lo espacial y lo temporal, limitados en su extensión, adquieren un gran peso.

Y esta temporalidad cerrada por la duración de la exposición tiene otro de sus agarres en una característica casi cosmogónica; el esfuerzo de realización es otra de las fuerzas que retroalimentan la obra de Maciá, con un impulso cercano a una futilidad romántica, así como en paralelo al espíritu del maestro Kandinski cuando decía que “el color tiene un poder que influye directamente en el alma“. Próximo a ello, Maciá tiene la capacidad de crear vívidas experiencias coloristas; su conocimiento de cómo el acto de mirar y estar en la arquitectura se puede transformar le permite llevar al espectador a una nueva percepción espacial.

El trabajo de Maciá constituye, pues, la síntesis de un pensamiento en un dibujo mural, un juego de colores en movimiento que se asienta en el espacio elegido con un agarre eléctrico, premeditadamente planeado por el autor. La expansión de la imagen es total, mostrando vitalidad, capacidad de juego y seriedad a la vez. Su pintura construida, que nace del gesto y la emoción, tiene una gran capacidad de seducción. Es una pintura visceral con vocación de mensaje emitido en un espacio de carácter social y creado para la transmisión del arte. Muralismo contemporáneo, del bueno.

visible markers in the space they occupy, pieces that make the surface on which they are produced a part of themselves. Far from ignoring the background, his interventions act upon and emphasise it. Despite their apparent spontaneity and visual freshness, these works follow a painstakingly laid plan; each one has been carefully thought out in terms of how it is made and how it will be perceived by spectators. The artist’s plans even take into account their limited lifespan, as they are specifically produced for sites that must eventually be restored to their original condition, as is the case of the Centro Federico García Lorca in Granada.

In this exhibition Maciá presents two interventions: Cuña [Wedge], at the entrance to the Centro Federico García Lorca, and Pasadizo [Passageway], located in a connecting corridor inside the building. The artist describes them as follows: Cuña: The orientation and shape of the building’s facade channel all the energy that flows from a highly symbolic monument, the Cathedral of Granada, towards the entrance. And it guides the directional lines of the square, Plaza de la Romanilla, to its facade. Here we find a large suspended concrete slab that seems to contain the building like a wedge. This structural unit is visually quite powerful and a perfect fit for my spatial interventions, in which I upset the existing architecture by means of invasive or expansive actions.

Pasadizo: The oddity in this building is a vault, a kind of archive space, located on the second floor. In order to reach it we must pass through a peculiar corridor that runs from the central part of the building to the entrance to this room. My intervention consists in jamming a piece from my Markers series into that space. The work is made of industrially lacquered aluminium sheets, which I bend, crumple and fold with the strength of my own body to create three-dimensional structures that I later paint using industrial markers. I use the sloping surface on one side of the corridor to prop up the piece and turn it into a perspective line, creating an almost impossible equilibrium.

When this graphic, pictorial, sculptural action strikes up a dialogue with a particular piece of architecture, the creative result for those who visit the place is an experience in which the power of the spatial and temporal dimensions, limited in their scope, acquires tremendous weight. That temporal dimension, constrained by the duration of the exhibition, is also anchored to another quasi-cosmogonic characteristic; the effort of creation is one of the driving forces in the loopfeed of Maciá’s work, an impulse that verges on Romantic futility and seems to echo the sentiments of the great Kandinsky when he said that “colour is a power which directly influences the soul”. In that spirit, Maciá has the ability to conjure up vividly colourful experiences; his understanding of how the act of seeing and being in architecture can be transformed allows him to transport spectators to a new level of spatial perception.

Maciá’s work is therefore a thought synthesised in a mural drawing, a set of moving colours that settles into the chosen space and clings to it with an electrifying grip, planned and premeditated by the artist. The expansion of the image is total and absolute, simultaneously demonstrating vitality, playfulness and solemn earnestness. His constructed painting, the child of gesture and emotion, is almost irresistibly seductive. It is visceral painting with the mission of conveying a message in a social space designed for the transmission of art. This is contemporary mural art at its finest.

El trabajo de Tobias Rehberger establece una alianza indispensable entre la obra y el espectador, una imprescindible interacción que le ha llevado incluso a realizar piezas netamente ambientales, que se adentran, desde una perspectiva siempre artística, en el terreno del diseño, como puede apreciarse en su creación integral de un bar, de un espacio de descanso o en sus ya conocidas lámparas, por citar solo algunos ejemplos. Pero la lectura que aproxima su obra al diseño es, como el propio artista explica, un error de interpretación relacional, pues lo que él busca señalar no es la cercanía, sino precisamente la diferencia entre arte y diseño.

Como ejemplo, centrémonos en una pieza del año 2002, titulada Arbeitend [Trabajando], que consiste en una lámpara diseñada por el artista que se expone, sola, en una habitación negra. Podemos contemplar la lámpara si está encendida, pero también es posible que esté apagada y nos deje a oscuras. La doble posibilidad de funcionamiento o no de la lámpara viene dada por el hecho de que está conectada con el estudio de Rehberger en Fráncfort, de forma que el modo de “encendido“ o “apagado“ responde respectivamente a si el artista está trabajando en aquel espacio o no, y ello de manera absolutamente independiente a los horarios del lugar donde la pieza está expuesta al público. Este planteamiento, que podría parecer un gesto de desprecio por parte del autor hacia el espectador, en realidad se sitúa en las antípodas, dado que el mensaje lanzado es que sepamos de forma directa si el artista está en su estudio o no en el momento en que contemplamos

In his artistic practice, Tobias Rehberger establishes a requisite alliance between work and spectator, an indispensable interaction that has even inspired him to create fully immersive pieces which venture into the territory of design, though always from an artistic perspective, as we see in his recreations of an entire bar and a lounge area or his well-known lamps, to name but a few examples.

However, viewing his work as something akin to design is, as the artist explains, a relational error of interpretation, for he seeks to underscore the differences rather than the affinities between art and design.

This is clearly illustrated by a piece from 2002 entitled Arbeitend [Working], which consists of a lamp designed by the artist exhibited alone in a black room. We can observe the lamp when it is on, but it may also be off, leaving us in the dark. The lamp’s dual operation mode is a product of the fact that it is connected to Rehberger’s studio in Frankfurt.

When the artist is working there the lamp is on, and when he is not it switches off, making no concessions to the regular visiting hours of the place where the piece is on public display. Though this arrangement might be viewed as a sign of the artist’s disregard for his audience, in fact it is anything but. It actually singles us out as privileged spectators, letting us know if the artist is in his studio at the moment we are contemplating his work, and this knowledge creates a kind of umbilical bond between us and Rehberger’s creative act in his habitual place of work.

In the course of his career, Rehberger has created a variety of works that demand and rely on a participative audience. In one case, he exhibited a series of vases and asked certain people to decide, based on their own preferences, which floral bouquets would be added as an essential part of the piece; on another occasion, when he was invited to show his work at the Portikus exhibition hall in Frankfurt, he took the written suggestions for specific changes

Entre los diversos trabajos en los que Rehberger, a lo largo de su carrera, ha demandado del público una actitud participativa, podemos citar también aquel en el que expuso una serie de jarrones y pidió a determinadas personas que eligieran, según su propio gusto, los ramos de flores que se incorporarían como parte esencial de la pieza; o aquel otro en el centro de exposiciones Portikus de Fráncfort, donde, cuando fue invitado a exponer, aplicó al pie de la letra las sugerencias específicas de cambio que el público había dejado por escrito como respuesta a una encuesta que proponía el centro con vistas a la mejora de las muestras que celebraba.

La obra de Rehberger necesita del otro, de su referencialidad. La escenografía de sus piezas requiere del espectador, como ya hemos comentado, una participación elocuente, en un paso que va más allá de la creación de elementos que, como los jarrones, las lámparas, las mesas y sillas, e incluso la ropa, tienen una clara vinculación con el ámbito doméstico; objetos de cuyo uso común se apropia el autor para testarlos al someterlos a la interacción con el público.

Para esta exposición, la máscara es el elemento creativo y participativo elegido por el artista. Su color —otra de las pautas a destacar en el trabajo de Rehberger— es protagonista, a pleno despliegue, ya que las referencias para el diseño de estas “cabezas“ han sido de origen popular y folklórico, trascendiendo lo estético, con lo que en ellas dominan las alusiones específicas a la tradición, a lo carnavalesco, a la fiesta ancestral que perdura a lo largo de los tiempos, a lo teatral y lo lúdico, temas lorquianos por excelencia que, a su vez, en la obra del poeta, conectan con el teatro de guiñol y los títeres de cachiporra.

Recordemos que uno de los elementos clave de la obra de teatro de Federico García Lorca El público es la máscara como símbolo surrealista, como objeto poético que alude a los sueños y al subconsciente, a lo oculto, a lo que no se puede ver. La máscara puede representar múltiples facetas, tanto de carácter artístico como estético, social o psicológico, todos ellos, factores siempre determinantes en la obra de Rehberger. El título genérico de las máscaras que aquí presenta, Me as You III —que podríamos traducir como “Yo como tú” o “Uno como el otro”—, expresa literalmente esa idea de convertirse en otro, en referencia a aquel que se transforma, tanto física como mentalmente, al introducir su cabeza dentro de la máscara. Lo individual se mezcla con lo coral en la máscara; su expresión puede llevar a engaño; el personaje, al identificase con el perfil que le otorga la máscara, abandona la pluralidad anónima para ser un nuevo ser individual, para señalarse dentro del colectivo.

Rehberger delega habitualmente la producción de sus piezas en manos de terceros, implicando al propio sistema en la fabricación del arte y alterando así el orden preestablecido en la ejecución artística. Las máscaras que aquí muestra son piezas de papel maché realizadas en China —país de origen de este material, que se utiliza en la elaboración de objetos artesanales— y han sido posteriormente decoradas por el artista en su estudio, para personalizarlas a partir de una idea genérica de temática popular. Estas piezas se exponen con la idea de que el público pueda interactuar con ellas, en sintonía con esa actitud de Rehberger que huye de la idea del artista como “genio creativo solitario“ abogando por la “creación colectiva, artesanal o industrial“, y con el destino participativo de sus piezas.

Rehberger’s work needs the referentiality of the other.

The staging of his pieces requires, as noted above, the eloquent participation of his spectators. His art goes beyond the mere creation of elements like vases, lamps, tables,

chairs and even clothing that are clearly related to the domestic context; Rehberger appropriates these objects for everyday use and forces them to interact with an audience, putting them to the test.

For this show, the artist has chosen the mask as his creative vehicle of participation. Colour—another defining feature of Rehberger’s work—plays a prominent role here, deployed in all its glory, for when designing these “heads” the artist drew heavily on popular culture and folklore, transcending aesthetic considerations, and they are therefore dominated by specific references to tradition, to the carnivalesque, to ancient celebratory rituals passed down through the ages, to the theatrical and the playful— quintessentially Lorquian themes which, in the poet’s work, are associated with Guignol shows and Punch and Judy puppets.

We should remember that one of the central elements in Federico García Lorca’s play The Public is the mask as a Surrealist symbol, as a poetic object alluding to the world of dreams and the subconscious, to that which is hidden and invisible to the human eye. The mask can represent myriad facets, whether artistic, aesthetic, social or psychological, all of which are always determining factors in Rehberger’s oeuvre. The generic title of the masks he presents here, Me as You III, literally conveys the idea of becoming someone else, the physical and mental transformation that is effected when someone dons a mask. Individuality and collectivity converge in the mask. Its expression may be misleading; the wearer, stepping into the role assigned by the mask, relinquishes anonymous plurality to become a new individual being, to stand out in the crowd.

Rehberger frequently outsources the actual production of his pieces, involving the system itself in the process of manufacturing art and thereby altering the established order of artistic creation. The masks displayed here are papiermâché pieces made in China—the country where this now standard craft material was invented—and later decorated by the artist in his studio, customising them based on the generic idea of a popular theme. These pieces are displayed so that the audience can interact with them, in keeping with Rehberger’s staunch opposition to the idea of the artist as a “solitary creative genius”, his defence of “collective creativity, whether manual or industrial” and the participatory purpose of his works.

Fernando Renes se inspira en los tradicionales lebrillos andaluces, especialmente los de estilo granadino y trianero, para la creación de esta obra homenaje a Federico García Lorca. En palabras del propio Renes al plantearse este proyecto: Hay una pieza de alfarería muy popular en toda Andalucía, el lebrillo. Soy un enamorado de la alfarería y de la cerámica en general, y Granada tiene una larga tradición alfarera, ya desde la época nazarí, incluso mucho antes, y me parecía que podía hacer algo más específico, a la par que aprovechar esta oportunidad para hacer algo nuevo. Sabiendo que a Lorca le apasionaba lo popular, intuía que la cerámica sería algo de su gusto, pero me apetecía hacer alguna pieza que no fuera meramente decorativa; por eso pensé en el lebrillo, recipiente que antes servía prácticamente para todo y que, desde el punto de vista plástico, veo muy potente, muy corpóreo. Estos lebrillos son un maridaje entre texto e imagen, teniendo a Lorca y a su obra por presencia y por ausencia. Después de meterme en el asunto, de repensar a Lorca y Granada —porque, aunque Lorca es universal, es muy granadino—, mi propuesta sería seguir investigando con el dibujo, pero, en vez de hacerlo sobre papel o pared, me gustaría hacerlo sobre lebrillos.

El lebrillo es un recipiente tradicional de barro, similar a un plato hondo o una fuente circular, que ha sido utilizado durante siglos con fines distintos: fuente de fruta, ensaladera, etc., para la higiene personal (aseo de manos, cara o pies) u otros usos domésticos (lavado de ropa y cacharros de cocina). Hoy día, el lebrillo ha perdido sus funciones prácticas para pasar a ser elemento decorativo, con dibujos y motivos diversos, reflejando la iconografía tradicional ligada a su lugar de fabricación, lo que le otorga un valor añadido.

El conjunto de lebrillos que componen esta obra de Fernando Renes se muestran en agrupaciones sobre el suelo, en lugar de como habitualmente se disponen, de modo ornamental, colgados de las paredes de las casas. La fórmula de presentación por la que opta el artista resulta, así, más “escultórica“ que decorativa, más escénica y teatral, y constituye una novedad en la práctica de Renes, que nos tiene acostumbrados a leer sus dibujos de manera clásica, sobre la pared expositiva. Y si decimos “leer“ es porque en su obra puede situarse al mismo nivel el dibujo, una imagen esquemática ilustrada, o algún texto ocasional que o bien acompaña a la imagen, o bien, incluso, se trata de una frase que es, en sí misma, protagonista de la pieza, sin anexo de dibujo alguno. Se opera en estos casos un reemplazamiento de la imagen por la palabra, lo que nos remite a Baldessari cuando afirma que “una palabra puede ser una imagen y una imagen puede ser una palabra, son intercambiables“.

[Game of Sand and Moon]

To create this tribute to Federico García Lorca, Fernando Renes sought inspiration in the traditional Andalusian earthenware bowls known as lebrillos, especially those made in the Granada and Triana styles. When he first began thinking about this project, Renes commented: There is one pottery piece that’s immensely popular throughout Andalusia, the lebrillo. I love pottery and ceramics in general, and Granada has a time-honoured pottery tradition that dates back to the Nasrid period and even earlier. I think I could do something more specific and take this opportunity to do something new.

Knowing how Lorca loved popular traditions and culture, I sensed that pottery would be something to his liking, but I wanted to create a piece that wasn’t merely decorative; that’s why I thought of the lebrillo, a bowl or basin that was once used for practically everything, which I see as very powerful, very solid and physical from a plastic perspective. These lebrillos are a marriage of text and image, where Lorca and his work are equally powerful in their presence and their absence. After getting into it, rethinking Lorca and Granada—for although Lorca is universal, he is still very Granadino—my idea is to continue investigating through drawing, but instead of drawing on a wall or a piece of paper I’d like to do it on lebrillos.

A lebrillo is a traditional earthenware vessel, rather like a large soup bowl or circular basin, which has been used in countless ways through the centuries: as a fruit bowl, salad bowl, etc., for personal hygiene (as a basin for washing hands, faces or feet) and for other domestic chores (laundry, washing up dishes and so on). Today the lebrillo has lost its

Curiosamente, algo similar ocurre con los dibujos que Federico García Lorca regalaba, enviaba, guardaba o publicaba junto con sus escritos: solían estar acompañados por una dedicatoria, un poema breve, una de sus frases surrealistas, manifestando una simbiosis entre la palabra y la imagen, una permeabilidad de géneros que, en el caso del poeta, tiene asimismo ramificaciones en su poesía y su teatro. Esa misma permeabilidad se produce en la obra de Renes cuando el dibujo se convierte en mensaje textual o cuando se transforma en animación visual. Y ahora, este proceso se extiende al barro, al utilizar, por primera vez en su carrera, el soporte cerámico del lebrillo como elemento en el que presentar sus nuevos trabajos, que son de carácter enunciativo, muy gráficos y de comprensión directa para el público. Sigue explicando el artista: “Lo que estoy haciendo con esta nueva obra es emplear los lebrillos como si fueran papel, con la salvedad de que se trata de barro. Los lebrillos son objetos muy esculturales, pero la metodología de trabajo es parecida a la que suelo utilizar. La literatura siempre me ha inspirado, así como la filosofía y frases o textos que puedo ver en cualquier sitio. Después hago ese maridaje imagen-texto“.

Citas y frases se combinan en estas piezas con dibujos esquemáticos, sencillos, obligados a contenerse en el soporte de barro cocido del lebrillo. El trasfondo popular del trabajo —que no es casual, sino característico en la obra de Renes— genera, lejos de la banalidad, una inmediata empatía emocional por su capacidad de enunciar lo poético desde la aproximación a lo cotidiano.

La desbordante imaginación que es también dominante en la obra del artista queda, así, sintetizada en el escueto mensaje de una frase, un dibujo, o la mezcla de ambos. La multitud de referentes que bullen en su cabeza pasan en este caso por el crisol de Lorca, algo que el autor hace sin esfuerzo alguno, dado que es un apasionado de la obra del poeta. El mismo título del proyecto se sitúa ya en ese plano del homenaje: “Juego de luna y arena“ es el último verso del poema que Lorca dedica al antagonismo existente entre los gitanos y la Guardia Civil, Romance de la Guardia Civil española, que a su vez pertenece al Romancero gitano. En palabras de Fernando Renes, este título “sintetiza muy bien la idea del lebrillo, que es un poco luna llena a la vez que está hecho de arena, arcilla, barro... muy del campo, una especie de maridaje entre cielo y tierra, aunque sea un matrimonio más femenino, por aquello de la noche intuitiva”. Y así vuelve a enlazar el artista con Lorca, en lo surrealista de lo poético, en lo onírico de lo cotidiano, en la apariencia inocente del gesto y en la búsqueda de la transmisión del mensaje de manera clara y cristalina. Y si hay dobleces, que se entiendan.

practical value and is considered a mere ornamental object, embellished with various drawings and motifs that reflect the traditional iconography of the place where they were made, giving them an added value.

The assorted lebrillos that comprise this work by Fernando Renes are arranged in groups on the floor instead of how they are usually displayed, as decorative pieces hanging on the walls of people’s homes. In deciding to present them this way, the artist has achieved an effect that is more “sculptural” than decorative, more dramatic and theatrical—a new development in Renes’s practice, which has us accustomed to reading his drawings in the conventional way, hung on a gallery wall. I say “reading” because in his work a drawing may be placed on the same level as a schematic illustrated image or the occasional text—either accompanying an image or standing alone as a self-sufficient protagonist of the piece, unrelated to any drawing. In such cases the image is replaced by the written word, reminding us of Baldessari’s musings on the subject: “It seemed to me that a word could be an image or an image could be a word. They could be interchangeable.”

Interestingly, something similar occurred with the drawings that Federico García Lorca gave away, posted, saved or published alongside his writings: they were usually accompanied by a dedication, a short poem or one of his Surrealist phrases, evidencing a symbiosis of word and image, a cross-genre permeability which, in the poet’s case, spilled over into his poetry and plays. That same permeability appears in Renes’s work when a drawing becomes a text message or is transformed into visual animation. Now this process has been extrapolated to the medium of clay; for the first time in his career, he uses the ceramic support surface of the lebrillo to present his latest creations, which are expository, highly graphic and easily understood by the audience. The artist explains, “What I’m doing in this new work is using the lebrillos as if they were pieces of paper, only they’re made of clay. Lebrillos are very sculptural objects, but the working method is similar to my usual approach. Literature has always inspired me, and the same goes for philosophy and random phrases or texts I might come across anywhere. Later I create that marriage of image and text.”

In these pieces, quotes and phrases are combined with simple, schematic drawings, forced to confine themselves to the area of the lebrillo’s fired-clay surface. The popular or folk connotations of the piece (which are not coincidental but central to Renes’s work), far from trivialising it, create an immediate emotional connection thanks to their ability to articulate the poetic in the language of the familiar and ordinary.

The boundless imagination that also dominates this artist’s work is thus boiled down to the succinct message of a phrase, a drawing or a combination of both. In this case, the countless references bubbling in the cauldron of his mind are refined in the crucible of Lorca, an operation the artist performs effortlessly as he happens to be a fervent admirer of the poet’s work. The very title of the project is a tribute to the master: “game of sand and moon” is a phrase from the final verse of Lorca’s poem about the animosity between gypsies and the Civil Guard, “The Ballad of the Spanish Civil Guard”, published in his Gypsy Ballads. According to Fernando Renes, this title “perfectly sums up the idea of the lebrillo, which is a bit like the full moon but is also made of sand, earth, clay... very much of the soil, a kind of union of heaven and earth, although the intuitive night makes this a more feminine marriage.” And so the artist ties it all in with Lorca, with the Surrealism of poetry, the oneiric quality of the ordinary, the apparent innocence of the gesture and the quest to convey his message with crystalline clarity. And if there is deception, let it be understood.

Miguel Ángel Tornero identifica su trabajo fotográfico con “una forma de desarrollar un mundo propio”. Y continúa: “Documentando mi vida cotidiana, recopilo imágenes para un extenso archivo fotográfico personal, que es la base de mi trabajo. Creo obras donde trato de reelaborar el entorno. Situaciones que tratan de incentivar la curiosidad del espectador y hacerle reflexionar. Escenas contenedoras de un tiempo propio, donde se crea una realidad paralela, generalmente cargada de atmósferas psicológicas y/o emocionalmente inquietantes“.

Imágenes cotidianas que se convierten en extrañas bajo la mano de Tornero, conformando el diario fotográfico de un seductor para la mirada ajena. Entre la realidad y la imaginación, se va creando ese “mundo propio“ al que el artista alude, que se nutre de la calle pero es sometido a un proceso de experimentación aleatorio donde lo visto y retratado se entrecruzan en un torbellino, sometidos a un centrifugado al que solo sobreviven las imágenes más resistentes. De ese proceso de turbina surgen estas Random Series granadinas, que revelan y desvelan, al mismo tiempo que se muestran llenas de veladuras y trampas, trampantojos para el espectador, que puede rebuscar en ellas, encontrar y volver de nuevo a perderse.

Tornero siempre ha creado sus Random Series ligadas a un lugar de estancia prolongada, con el que establece una relación emocional: comenzaron en Berlín, prosiguieron en Roma, después en Madrid y ahora tienen

como lugar de acción Granada, la primera capital de provincia que Tornero conoció cuando fue a estudiar desde su Baeza natal. La ciudad ha cambiado desde aquellos tiempos de aprendizaje del artista, lo que le produce —al ahora fotógrafo profesional— un sentimiento contradictorio, a modo de déjà-vu, entre lo experimentado y reconocible, y lo nuevo e irremediablemente diferente.

Pero la nostalgia que de ahí podría derivarse se convierte en otro asunto, lo que no nos impide descubrir en

Miguel Ángel Tornero describes his photography as “a way of developing my own world”. He continues, “Documenting my daily life, I collect images for a vast personal photography archive, which is the basis of my work. I create pieces where I try to refashion the surroundings, situations that aim to pique the audience’s curiosity and make them think. These scenes contain a time of their own where a parallel reality is created, generally filled with psychologically and/or emotionally disturbing atmospheres.”

Tornero renders commonplace images strange and unfamiliar, compiling them into the photo diary of a seducer for other eyes only. The artist’s “own world” slowly takes shape in the gap between reality and imagination; it derives sustenance from the street but is put through a process of random experimentation where the seen and the portrayed cross paths in a whirlwind, subjected to a centrifugal force that only the hardiest images can endure. These Granadaborn Random Series are the result of that turbine process; they reveal and unveil, but they are also full of deceptive fog banks and traps, trompes-l’oeil for spectators who can sift through them, search, find and become lost once more.

Tornero’s Random Series have always been produced in the context of an extended stay in a place with which he establishes an emotional bond: they began in Berlin, continued in Rome and later resurfaced in Madrid, and now the action is set in Granada, the first provincial capital he ever visited when he left his hometown of Baeza to study. The city has changed since the artist’s student days, and on returning now, as a professional photographer, he was struck by a contradictory feeling of déjà-vu: Granada is familiar and recognisable, yet at the same time new and inevitably different.

The nostalgia that such a feeling might have inspired instead became something else, though this does not prevent us from detecting a buried biographical vein in the photographer’s work that leads us to observe and invite observation. These photographs are explorations of the identity of a city where grand historic monuments anarchically coexist with conventional buildings, the Alhambra with counterfeit Arab tea houses and businesses catering for tourists. In this series Tornero creates his own personal guide to the city, which cannot be read as if it were a conventional travel book. The interweaving images whose relationships are based entirely on contrast, colliding and spinning randomly yet perfectly intentional in their erratic ways, signify a collapse of traditional language. The invisible is made present in the visible, and the local and familiar becomes strange and remarkable. These many-layered

photographs can be interpreted in multiple personal ways, but at the same time they lend themselves to straightforward visual comprehension.

Tornero explains the mental awakening of his work by comparing it to the situation of someone facing a totally alien world who must vigorously stretch his imagination in order to interpret and classify its visible signs—”high-demand babble”, in the artist’s words. Part solitary flâneur, part Japanese tourist in the city, his gaze turns the domestic into extraterrestrial, fracturing the narrative field with an injection of fantasy—even if that fantasy was spawned by observing the streets—which, in his case, is the ultimate source of that transformation. His wanderings through the city are conveyed with a subsequent detachment that allows him to work on what he has seen and documented with great freedom. After the photographic orgy, the next order of business is cleaning and culling, making a selection of the best, like an ethnologist or botanist who, after a day of fieldwork, must proceed to catalogue and classify the collected samples.

We remember Lorca the poet for his unique blend of popular wisdom, synthesised from certain Andalusian folklore, and erudite inspiration, seeking the metaphorical transpositions of Surrealism in a correspondence between the two sources, in a semi-automatic poetic gesture that unites them in a climate of masterful invention where there is also pure innocence, a dreamt-of imagination full of references to reality. Wearing his poetic tension and emotions on his sleeve, Tornero immerses himself in the Lorca who once wrote to a friend, “I am fashioning now a sort of vein-opening poetry, a poetry that has evaded reality with an emotion reflecting all of my love of things and my mockery of things. [...] All day I turn out poems like a factory. [...] There are all sorts of poems [...].” He later writes, “Poetry is something that walks the streets. It moves, passing right beside us. All things have their mystery, and poetry is the mystery of all things.”

Miguel Ángel Tornero is in that city, that magnet of the sublime, where he finds inspiration but short-circuits it as he pleases, producing a simultaneously choreographed and disjointed narrative whose main characters are street scenes, the anonymous denizens of the city, present and nevertheless absent. As the director of a theatrical production that defies the rules of its genre, Tornero demonstrates, in the scenes that are his photographs, an affective relationship with the surroundings, a prowling manner that is his customary way of approaching the familiar and the unknown, with all senses heightened and alert. The Random Series are the product of a working strategy with a small built-in trap for spectators: images which, when strung together, begin to mutate.

la obra del fotógrafo una especie de biografía soterrada que nos conduce a observar e invitar a observar: estas fotografías son exploraciones sobre la identidad de una ciudad en la que conviven de manera anárquica los grandes monumentos históricos con los edificios convencionales, la Alhambra con las falsas teterías árabes y los negocios para el turista. Tornero construye en esta serie fotográfica una particular guía de la ciudad que demanda una lectura muy diferente a la de una guía de viajes al uso. El entrecruzamiento de imágenes que se relacionan por contraste, chocantes, aleatorias pero perfectamente intencionadas en su forma errática, significan un colapso del lenguaje tradicional. Lo invisible se hace presente en lo visible, lo local y conocido pasa a ser extraño y singular. Estas fotografías, llenas de capas, se prestan a una interpretación múltiple y personal, pero, al mismo tiempo, se ofrecen a la comprensión visual directa.

Para hablar del arranque mental de su trabajo, Tornero utiliza el símil de ponerse en una situación de desconocimiento ante un mundo a cuyas señales visuales —”balbuceos de alta demanda”, en palabras del artista— ha de enfrentarse con ardua imaginación para poder interpretarlas y codificarlas. Su mirada, a mitad de camino entre un flâneur solitario y un turista japonés en la ciudad, convierte lo doméstico en extraterrestre, fracturando el campo narrativo con una inyección de fantasía, aunque esta surja de la observación callejera, que, en su caso, es fuente determinante de esa transformación. El recorrido por la ciudad se plasma en un posterior distanciamiento que otorga una extrema libertad al trabajo sobre lo visto y registrado. Tras el atracón fotográfico, toca hacer limpieza y criba, para quedarse con una selección de lo mejor; a la manera del etnólogo o el botánico tras su trabajo de campo, que procede a la catalogación y clasificación de lo recolectado.

Recordamos al Lorca poeta por su singular mezcla de la sabiduría popular —síntesis de cierto folklore andaluz— y la inspiración culta, buscando las transposiciones metafóricas del surrealismo en una correspondencia de ambas fuentes, en un gesto poético semiautomático que las une en un clima de invención magistral donde también está la inocencia pura, una imaginación soñada llena de referencias a la realidad. Con tensión poética y emotividad a flor de piel, Tornero se impregna del Lorca que escribe en una carta a un amigo: “Ahora tengo una poesía de abrirse las venas, una poesía evadida ya de la realidad como una emoción donde se refleja todo mi amor y mi guasa por las cosas [...] Todo el día tengo una actividad poética de fábrica [...] Hay poemas de todas clases...“. Y sigue: “La poesía es algo que anda por las calles. Que se mueve, que pasa a nuestro lado.

Todas las cosas tienen su misterio, y la poesía es el misterio que tienen todas las cosas“.

Miguel Ángel Tornero se sitúa en esa ciudad que es foco de lo sublime, donde el artista encuentra inspiración pero la cortocircuita donde le interesa, generando una narrativa coreografiada y fragmentada a la vez, cuyos protagonistas son los escenarios callejeros, los anónimos habitantes de la urbe, presentes y a la vez ausentes. Como director de una representación teatral que transgrede el género, Tornero manifiesta, en las escenas que son sus fotografías, una relación afectiva con el entorno, un merodear habitual que es su manera de acercarse a lo familiar y a lo desconocido, con todos los sentidos desplegados. Las Random Series nacen de una estrategia de trabajo que incluye una pequeña trampa para el espectador: imágenes que mutan al hilvanarse unas con otras.

Las primeras y estas últimas palabras de El público, de Federico García Lorca, están consagradas a llamar al público a entrar. Al inicio es el Director el que, cuando el Criado le anuncia que ahí está el público, contesta rotundo: “Que pase“. Más tarde, como colofón, ese diálogo se repite, como se repite por cierto el de Esperando a Godot, aquel en el que Estragón pregunta a Vladimir: “¿Por qué no nos vamos?“, y Vladimir le contesta igualmente rotundo: “Porque estamos esperando a Godot“. Pues eso. Y Godot sigue sin venir, y, desde 1953, fecha del estreno de la obra, no ha aparecido aún. Al menos, el público de El público sí llegó, aunque hubieron de transcurrir 56 años para que esto sucediera, desde que Lorca escribió la obra (1930), hasta que finalmente se estrenó (1986).

Pero, entonces y ahora, estas dos piezas teatrales, dos de las obras maestras del ya muy fenecido siglo XX, dejan en el aire dos preguntas, dos preguntas que siguen inquietándonos sobremanera. ¿Quién es Godot? y, no menos importante, ¿quién es el público? ¿Quién es ese público que tiene que pasar?, ¿quién ese Godot al que esperamos y nunca llega?

Y es que el público es eso que los juristas llaman un concepto jurídicamente indeterminado, como la buena fe o la posteridad, un ente abstracto de perfiles gaseosos. Y, cuando Lola Flores afirmaba rumbosa que ella se debía a su público, los demás no conseguíamos ni conseguimos dibujarlo, nos cuesta, y mucho, ponerle cara. ¿Era el que compraba sus discos, el que acudía a sus actuaciones o el que simplemente la admiraba?

“No canta, no baila, no se la pierda“ es la mejor definición del personaje, que, sin duda, tenía su público, pero insisto, aun pecando de ser yo también reiterativo: ¿quién era ese público? ¿Era el mismo al que Marilyn Monroe decía pertenecer, pobrecita, “no por mi físico y mi belleza, sino porque nunca antes había pertenecido a nadie“? En su caso, ¿era el público que veía sus películas, el que aún hoy colecciona sus fotos, el que la venera como icono sexual?

Federico García Lorca’s play The Public opens and closes with an invitation for the audience to enter. In the opening scene it is the Director who, when the Servant announces that the public is there, emphatically replies, “Show them in.” At the end the same dialogue is repeated, just as the same conversation is repeated in Waiting for Godot, when Estragon asks why they can’t leave, and Vladimir answers, “We’re waiting for Godot.”

So they (and we) wait. Meanwhile, there’s still no sign of Godot—in fact, he hasn’t appeared since the play was first performed in 1953. At least the public of The Public showed up, although it took them long enough: 56 years, to be precise, from the time Lorca wrote the play in 1930 until its debut in 1986.

Yet these two dramas, both masterpieces of the now long-dead 20th century, left and continue to leave two questions hanging in the air, two questions that still vex us to no end. Who is Godot? And, no less importantly, who is the public? Who is the public that must be shown in? Who is Godot, that tiresome bloke we’re waiting for who never shows up?

The problem is that the public is what jurists call an indeterminate legal concept, like good faith or posterity, an abstract entity with vague outlines. When Lola Flores1 asserted to the beat of a flamenco rumba that she owed it all to her public, we hadn’t the foggiest idea who she was talking about: we struggled and still struggle to put a face to the name. Was it those who bought her albums, those who went to her shows, or those who simply admired her?

“She don’t sing, she don’t dance, but you don’t want to miss her” is the best definition of this flamboyant character, who undoubtedly had her public. However, at the risk of being repetitive, I ask again: Who was that public? Was it the same public to which Marilyn Monroe said she belonged, poor thing, “not because I was talented or even beautiful, but because I had never belonged to anything or anyone else?” In her case, was it the public who saw her movies, who even today continues collecting her photos, who worships her as a sexual icon?

La pregunta, las preguntas, no son baladíes, porque parece que, tanto para los creadores como para los gestores culturales, el público, esa indefinición, esa cosa, es la razón de ser de cuanto hacemos. Una exposición sin público es como un jardín sin flores, aunque tendremos que reconocer que algunas propuestas parecen ir encaminadas a crear ese vergel afloral, a perpetrar un jardín donde las flores, aun en primavera, brillen por su ausencia. Se impone, pues, que delimitemos el concepto de público —que no de lo público, pues ese es otro jardín, él sí florido donde los haya, en el que no debemos meternos si no queremos salir escaldados—.

Y la primera consideración que aparece en ese intento de perfilarlo es que el público pertenece al arte o, si queremos ser más generosos, es privativo del arte y del espectáculo. O, dicho de otro modo, las mercerías no tienen público, tienen clientes; en toda actividad comercial que no sea artística, el que paga y compra es el cliente, y ya saben que el cliente, además, siempre tiene razón, aunque luego le den gato por liebre. Hay una excepción siniestra pero muy hermosa que es el gremio médico, donde, aunque siga pagando, el cliente, por arte de magia, se convierte en paciente, que viene de patiens, participio del verbo pati, que remite a un sufrir pasivo. Porque, con ese nombre que te procuran, espléndidos, ya te están advirtiendo que te prepares para lo peor, que no solo te van a tener esperando en la consulta tres horas, algo que un cliente nunca aguantaría, sino que empieza, no un servicio, que es lo

These are not trifling questions, for it would appear that the public—that indefinite concept, that thing—is the raison d’être of all our striving, whether we are artists or agents of culture. An exhibition without an audience is like a garden without flowers, although admittedly some proposals seem determined to create that bloom-less oasis, to cultivate a garden where the only striking thing about the flowers, even in spring, is their absence. It is therefore imperative that we define the concept of the public in the sense of audience (not the public domain, which is another garden altogether, a riotously flowering realm we would do well to avoid lest we emerge scathed and scalded). The first thing that comes to mind in this attempt to profile the public is that it belongs to art; or, if we are feeling generous, we might say it is the prerogative of art and spectacle. To put it another way, a haberdashery does not have a public, it has customers. In every nonartistic commercial enterprise, the customer is the one who pays and buys; furthermore, as we know, the customer is always right, though that doesn’t mean the customer won’t get fleeced. There is one sinister yet delightful exception, namely the medical profession, where customers, though still footing the bill, are miraculously transformed into patients—a word that comes from the Latin patiens, present participle of the verb pati, meaning to suffer passively. In giving you this title, generous souls, they are warning you to prepare for the worst: not only are they going to keep you waiting in the clinic for three hours, something a customer would never stand for, but they will also offer you not a service, which is what customers demand, but a treatment—and then, never better said, may God have mercy on your soul.

To further complicate matters, artists also have to eat— finicky things that they are—and sell their product, and, once again, whoever buys it suddenly and inexplicably becomes a customer. So we might say that someone with the good fortune and, most importantly, the dosh to buy a Bacon is a customer of Bacon’s, while someone who admires one of his triptychs at a museum is merely a member of his public. Critics tell you what that work is worth, customers buy it and the public admires or rejects it because, after all, the public has a mind of its own; mere spectators haven’t paid for the product and don’t have a vested interest in raising its value, so they can afford to hate it if they wish.

I have already hinted at the public’s second defining feature, its nebulous nature. The public is faceless and

Y el segundo elemento que define al público ya lo hemos esbozado aquí y es su carácter gaseoso. El público no tiene cara, no tiene nombre. El cliente sí, el paciente también. Al primero le repiten el nombre hasta la náusea, si es que se lo saben; al segundo le ponen una pulserita para identificarlo, le abren un historial con sus iniciales. Es ese rasgo el que vuelve al público peligroso, su carácter de ente difuso, su condición inasible y, por tanto, fácilmente manipulable; si son muchos los Borges en la guía telefónica, es como si no hubiera ninguno, decía Borges; si no consigo ponerte cara, no sé quién eres, no sé qué quieres. El público no son, pues, personas con nombres y apellidos, sino meros puntitos, puntitos negros sobre un fondo blanco, esos mismos que Orson Welles señalaba desde lo alto de la noria del Prater para tratar de explicarle a su amigo Joseph Cotten que tampoco era tan grave traficar con penicilina; “Si te dijeran que te dan 20000 libras por eliminar cada puntito, ¿pensarías que son personas o empezarías a calcular cuántos puntitos hay?”. Y es ese el elemento que determina la relación que con el público deben tener quienes con él lidian, que son el artista y el gestor, o, si lo prefieren, el creador y el prescriptor. Limitaremos a ellos el análisis, pues son, de quienes forman parte de lo que muy pomposamente Achille Bonito Oliva llamaba el “sistema del arte” (artista, crítico, galerista, comprador, museo), aquellos que tienen relación directa con el público.

Y al hablar del artista y el público, tendremos que empezar por contradecir a Lola Flores, por mucho que nos duela (“Si me queréis, ¡irse!“), por mucho que ya

The former hear their names repeated ad nauseam, if the speaker knows or can remember them; the latter are given little bracelets to identify them and a medical file with their initials. The fact that it is an ill-defined entity, impossible to pin down and therefore easy to manipulate, is precisely what makes the public dangerous. As Jorge Luis Borges once remarked, if there are too many Borges in the phone book, it’s the same as if there were none; if I can’t match your face with a name, I don’t know who you are or what you want. The public is not, therefore, people with first and last names; it is just a smattering of black dots on a white background, the same dots that Orson Welles pointed out from the top of the Ferris wheel at the Prater amusement park as he tried to explain to his friend Joseph Cotten why his diluted penicillin racket wasn’t all that heinous: “If I offered you £20,000 for every dot that stopped—would you really, old man, tell me to keep my money? Or would you calculate how many dots you could afford to spare?” This is a determining factor of the relationship that those who choose to lock horns with the public must have—namely, artists and cultural managers or, if you prefer, creators and designators. I will limit my analysis to them, for, of all the actors that make up what Achille Bonito Oliva pompously termed the “art system” (artists, critics, gallerists, buyers, museums), they are the ones who come into direct contact with the public.

My discussion of artists and the public must necessarily begin by contradicting Lola Flores, however much it pains me (in her famous words, “If you love me, get out!”) and even though it’s a bit unfair considering that she isn’t around anymore to argue her case. Artists do not owe everything to their public; in truth, artists owe nothing to anyone but themselves. que el cliente exige, sino un tratamiento, y entonces que Dios, y nunca mejor dicho, te pille confesado.

Pero, además de la relación del artista y su público, está aquella del gestor y el suyo; el gestor programa y, al otro lado de esa programación, comunicada brillantemente, presentada a los medios y difundida por todas y cada una de las muchas y muy hermosas redes sociales, está el público, en su casa, en zapatillas, soberano; un público que puede o no acudir a lo brillantemente programado, que es libre —como la paloma de la canción de Rocío Jurado, ya que estamos con citas de filósofos griegos—, salvo aquel que, no por nada, llamamos cautivo. Aquí nos topamos con un problema que el gran Sánchez Ferlosio ya anunciaba allá por el muy remoto 1992, y es lo que él denominaba las “cajas vacías“. Se preguntaba Ferlosio, hablando de los fastos de la Expo 92 de Sevilla, donde había programadas miles de actividades culturales, si eso sucedía porque había miles de actividades buscando espacio donde ser o si, por el contrario, era la creación de ese espacio lo que las generaba. Para él, cuando el continente precedía así al contenido, esa era una “caja vacía”, y esa caja, lejos de llenarse, se rellenaba. Y desde entonces, en nuestro país, se han sucedido las “cajas vacías”, auditorios sin orquesta, museos sin obra que albergar; algunas ciudades se inventaron un río solo para que Calatrava les perpetrara un puente.

Y en esas cajas se termina produciendo entonces un doble relleno: el primero es el de la obra o la actividad que en ella se alberga; el segundo, el del público que a ella acude. Hasta tal punto el público condiciona la gestión cultural que alguien propuso, acertado, crear una empresa de público, una que te provea, generosa pero previo pago, del público que precisas para cada actividad de tu programa. no tenga ella derecho a réplica. No, el artista no se debe a su público; en verdad, el artista no se debe más que a sí mismo, debe ser solo fiel a sí mismo, porque, si crea pensando en el público en general, igual no tiene ninguno y, si lo hace pensando en su público, por ahí igual pierde el poco que atesora. No, más bien, la relación del artista con el público tiene que ser la que proponía Cocteau: “Lo que el público te reprocha, cultívalo; eso eres tú“. Es decir, sé tú, por más que en muchas ocasiones, querido Jean, ya me gustaría, y mucho, que fueras otro.

Instead, artists seeking to establish a relationship with the public should follow Cocteau’s advice: “What the public reproaches you for— cultivate it! It’s you.” In other words, be yourself, no matter how often, my dear Jean, I may fervently wish you were someone else.

Yet in addition to the relationship between artists and their public, we must also consider the relationship between cultural managers and their public. The manager plans and organises and, at the receiving end of that plan—brilliantly packaged and publicised, presented to the media and distributed via each of the many and exquisitely lovely social networks—is the sovereign public, lounging at home in their slippers. This public may or may not turn up for the brilliantly planned event, because it is free—like the dove in that song by Rocío Jurado,2 while I’m quoting the Greek philosophers— except for that aptly termed subset, the “captive audience”. Here we come up against another problem which the great writer Sánchez Ferlosio pointed out way back in 1992, the issue of what he called the “empty boxes”. Discussing the thousands of cultural activities organised in connection with the World’s Fair in Seville, Expo ‘92, Ferlosio wondered if this was because thousands of activities had simply been waiting for a space to become available, or if the creation of that space was what prompted their appearance. For him, when the container precedes the content in this way, the former is merely an “empty box” which, instead of being filled, is stuffed with filler. Ever since then, Spain has been the land of “empty boxes”: auditoriums without orchestras, museums without artworks to display, and even cities that conjured up a river for the sole purpose of acquiring a bridge designed by the architect Calatrava.

entrevistas miles, consigues ponerlo en contacto con gente interesante del sector, es decir, cumples con todos tus objetivos, pero todo se te arruina porque a la conferencia no va nadie (ese día había partido de la Champions). Y al final, terminas pensando que, en ese caso, el problema se reduce a una mera cuestión estética: a nadie le gusta ver una sala vacía, asistir a una inauguración de una expo con canapés pero sin canaperos, pese a que te importe una higa quiénes son los que han ido, pese a que a ellos nada les interese la conferencia o la expo con derecho a copa de vino español. Qué mejor, pues, que destinar una partida presupuestaria al público, igual que asignas un dinero para la cena con el invitado o le pagas el viaje. Público a medida: me va a poner dos docenas de público de aspecto universitario, botella grande de público hipster con recargo si gasta barba (especialmente, ellas), botellín de público adulto con bono de dos preguntas sesudas, lata cartón de público joven tipo groupie que se rasgue las vestiduras en sentido literal a cada estrofa. Público que puede llegar a cumplir las fantasías de Enrique Vila-Matas e ir abandonando, obediente y ordenado, una conferencia hasta que el conferenciante se quede solo, si es eso lo que le pides, o reventar un acto, disfrazados todos de futuristas rusos, para que así la conferencia salga hermosa en los papeles.

Pero, bromas aparte, tal vez al gestor se le aplica lo mismo que al artista; tampoco él se debe a su público —lo siento, Lola—; quizá, si el artista tiene que guiarse solo por lo que le pide el cuerpo, el gestor debe guiarse únicamente por ese otro concepto jurídicamente indeterminado que es la calidad, esa cualidad que predican los fabricantes de sus yogures; o mejor, por otro concepto más añejo, la excelencia, que es lo que ponen en los escudos las universidades que quieren sacarte las perras. O dicho en plata, tener criterio, aplicarlo, ser coherente, no buscar al público, porque de nada sirve que vaya un millón si lo que programas es bazofia; luego, además, igual el millón eran solo cien mil por un pequeño error de contabilidad, y alguien viene a decirte, impertinente, que menos lobos, Caperucita. Que pase, como decía el personaje de Lorca. Que pase, pero que pase el público al que hayas cuidado, cautivado con tu propuesta, educado sin que se dé cuenta, alentado, seducido, engatusado. Que pase, pero no porque programes para él, porque entonces igual, a lo peor, el que pasa no te gusta, terminas mirando la platea y

Ultimately, those boxes generate two kinds of filler: the first is the work or activity they hold, and the second is the public that comes to experience what they offer. Cultural management is so audience-dependent that someone once made the clever suggestion of creating a “public-hunting agency”, a firm that would generously—for a modest fee, of course—supply the public needed to guarantee a healthy turnout at each planned activity. The sad fact is that sometimes the public is the only thing that fails; you convince a major artist to give a lecture, the press coverage is flawless, with thousands of interviews, you contact all the key people in the industry to let them know about the event—in other words, you do everything right, but it’s a disaster because no one shows up for the lecture (there was a Champions League match that day). And in the end you conclude that, in this case, the problem was really just a question of aesthetics: no one likes seeing an empty lecture hall or attending an exhibition opening with plenty of hors d’oeuvres but no one to nibble on them. It doesn’t matter who shows up as long as the room is full, even if they have absolutely no interest in the lecture or the exhibition and were only lured there by the promise of free wine. So it really makes perfect sense to create a budget category for the public, just as you earmark funds for a dinner with the guest speaker or his/her travel expenses. That way you can have a bespoke audience: I’ll take two dozen university types, one large bottle of hipsters with a surcharge for the bearded variety (plenty of those, please), one small bottle of a mature public with a voucher for two brainy questions apiece, and one jug of young groupie types willing to literally rend their garments every time the speaker pauses. If you want, you can order up an obedient public that files out of the hall in a quiet, orderly manner until only the lecturer is left, the kind of audience that author Enrique Vila-Matas fantasised about, or you can ask for a rowdy crowd disguised as Russian Futurists to disrupt the event—a good ruckus is sure to make a delightful splash in the morning papers.

However, joking aside, perhaps cultural managers, like artists, do not owe the public anything (sorry Lola); perhaps, if the actions of artists must be guided only by their own hearts’ desires, then the actions of cultural managers should be guided only by that other indeterminate legal concept we call quality—the same quality touted by those who make their yoghurts—or, better yet, the threadbare concept of excellence, which is what universities emblazon on their seals when they want you to fork over a few more quid. Y es que no debemos olvidar algo fundamental que a veces tendemos a obviar: no escoges tú, artista o gestor, no eres tú el que escoge al público, es el público el que te escoge a ti. Y puedes terminar como Kaka de Luxe, quejándote amargamente: “pero qué público más tonto tengo, pero qué público más subnormal”, haciendo gala de una incorrección política que hoy sería intolerable. Y si eso sucede, déjame que termine con un consejo: no se lo digas, no le cuentes al público lo que piensas de él, porque, a diferencia del público del Zurdo y compañía, que lo que hacía era aplaudirles, ahora igual te demandan por atentar contra su honor, por injuriarlos después de haber pagado la entrada religiosamente. Y es que —tendremos que decirlo de una vez— el público, como el futuro, ya no es lo que era.

Show them in, as Lorca’s character said. Show them in, but show in the public you’ve nurtured and captivated with your idea, the public you’ve educated and moulded without their knowing it, the audience you’ve coddled, seduced and sweet-talked. Show them in, but not because you strive to please them, because if you do, in the worst-case scenario, you may not like those who are shown in; you may end up staring out at the audience and realising that these weren’t the people you had hoped would come, as if you had the power to pick and choose, as if you could sort through them like clothes in the bargain bin. We must bear one important fact in mind, something we often tend to overlook: the choice is not up to you, the artist or manager. You don’t get to choose the public, the public chooses you. If you forget this, you may end up like the iconic Spanish punk rock band Kaka de Luxe, bitterly complaining, “What a stupid public I’ve got, what a moronic audience,” with the kind of political incorrectness that may have been acceptable to concertgoers in the late 1970s and early 80s but would never be tolerated today. And if that happens, let me close with a word of advice: don’t say a word. Don’t let the audience know what you think of them, because unlike the band’s adoring fans, who responded to the insults with applause, today they’re more likely to slap you with a lawsuit for slandering them after they paid good money to attend your event. We must come to terms with the fact—and it’s high time somebody said it—that the public, like the future, isn’t what it used to be.
