Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

Although traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas is widely celebrated by many non­Christians, and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre­Christian or secular themes and origins.

Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift­giving, Christmas carols, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, and garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly.

In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.

Because gift­giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non­ Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

New York is located in the northeastern United States, in southeastern New York State and approximately halfway between Washington, DC and Boston. Its location at the mouth of the Hudson River, which forms a naturally protected port and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, has helped the growth of the city and its importance as a commercial city. Most of New York is built on three islands: Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island, making the building land is scarce and thus generating a high density of population.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the Americans in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence of the United States and as a sign of friendship between the two nations. It was inaugurated on 28 October 1886 in presence of President of the time, Grover Cleveland. The statue is the work of French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the internal structure was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel.
