Detailed Planning Client - NTSU Nottingham Trent Student’s Union Comprising of an office for staff members, a shop, catering facilities and leisure areas. Brief - Detailed adaptation In 2011 the Student’s Union building was demolished for the construction of a brand new building. As a temporary replacement, the “Spanky’s” pub was appointed to host the SU functions. The brief was to create a practical design layout that would provide all the necessary facilities for a temporary SU, without incurring high costs or structural transformations.

Bankside Project Work Placement
Client - Private Residence Private Residence of a high-profile client, based at Bankside, London. Brief - Bespoke Book Shelf To customise one of Fromental’s chinoiserie embroidered wallpaper designs onto the cabinet doors of a bespoke unit. As part of an ongoing refurbishment project of the client’s apartment, I handled the overall work for the feautre bookshelf unit that would be placed in the study area. Liasing with the designer, we coordinated dimensions, colour schemes and design ideas. Concept - Chinese Inspired The client’s inspiration was the blossoming Chinese Prunus tree. He wanted the design to be incorporated into his book shelf to add a touch of class to the space. As a feature piece to the unit, the client also wanted to hang this portrait of the 3 chinese ladies, and so the design would have to incorporate this and tie in the colours.

A Sensory Journey Brief - An Unloved space To transform an unloved space in Nottingham; To create a space which excites the senses and sparks the imagination; To give people an unforgettable experience. Concept - Provoke curiosity My approach to the site was to use a soft material which would contrast with the existing concrete structures. Creating journeys through the string, where viewers would touch the material as they walked around it. Shadows cast by the passing vehicles would create an ever changing sensory experience.

Airborne Client - John Lewis / Dalziel & Pow John Lewis - Oxford Street Flagship store. Dalziel & Pow are working alongside JL’s In-house design team to re-brand the technology department. Brief - Technology To design a new retail experience for Technology at JLP, building on the brand’s strength. To create a concept that will excite the tech-savvy and reassure the technophobe. Concept - Provoke curiosity My concept stemmed from analysing the company’s history. As a tribute to its ‘ribbons and haberdashery’ roots I wanted the design to have freedom and simplicity in its materials. The cassette tape was a focal point as a hint at old technology and representing a sense of past time. Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture on the east side of the building has also been an influence in the suspended design, where the concept represents a sense of freedom. “I think one of our universal dreams is to move in air and water without the resistance of our human legs. I wanted to evoke this sense of freedom. If the Winged Figure in Oxford Street gives people a sense of being airborne in rain and sunlight and night light I will be very happy. - Barbara Hepworth

Stair Designing Brief - Visual Exploration To design a staircase between ground and first or mezzanine level. Light sources must be considered. To explore different methods of creating visuals, using the same perspective view. Concept - Contrast To create a design to be visually appealing by using contrasting materials between the stairs and the flooring, as well as shadow patterns to give it a dynamic look. To focus on the handrail design as well as the staircase to add a bold feature to the space. To choose the best perspective view from which to create the visuals, where it would showcase the design’s best features.
STAIR DESIGNING
Visual 1: Hand rendered image using pen, ink and watercolours. This style was chosen for its textured character and control of lighting.

Visual 2: Graphic style collage showing the site’s location on a map background, and including existing site context to the design.
STAIR DESIGNING
Manipulated images of physical card model.
Visual 3: Photograph of physical card model was digitally manipulated to create a realistic rendering style. Silhouettes added to soften the harsh contrast of the lighting and add movement to the image.

A Space to Breathe (final major project)
Client - NTU Students Primary research has confirmed the lack of a space to relax on the NTU city campus. Brief - A Space to Breathe To design a building which will provide various different spaces for students to de-stress, in addition to those currently provided on campus. Needs to cover aspects highly mentioned in questionnaire results: Outdoors, music, TV/film, sleep, comfortable seating, food, etc. Providing fresh air where possible, and using the caves & void of the building as focal points to enhance its history. Concept - Natural light & angles To adapt the shape of the existing void to mirror the building’s natural angles and continue to use this as the design language. Expand the void vertically so it travels through all levels and takes natural light into the cave. Cave to be filled with aroma-therapeutic oils which will travel through the void, creating a soothing scent throughout.
A SPACE TO BREATHE
Photograph of model showing view from the first floor down into the cave where the aromatherapy well can be seen through the void space. This allows the soothing scents from the well to travel through the building.

41 Tiered cinema seating has been designed using pallets due to its vintage style and wooden structure that matches that of the building’s design language. The sub-basement level this is located in only has 2300mm head height, so keeping the tiered seating as low as possible is also key.
