Cover Letter

In my final year of university I have been seeking experience on how to use and adapt my skills to fit into tasks in a work environment. I have had previous experience with Gentoo Group who are a housing association based in Sunderland (full info listed on next page) within this I was given briefs based around designing posters, emails, signage and information booklets. The reason that I am seeking further work experience is so that I can continue to develop my flexibility in design and learn which skills I lack and which skills I need to develop to make sure I excel when put into a work environment. Some useful aspects of working in a professional environment which would be good to experience would be being shown what process some of the design aspects of the organization go through. For example if a booklet was to be sent out to advertise the organization then what information would have to be included and if there are any brand guidelines that the designer would have to be restricted to. Also if your organization gets the work designed externally then what information do you include when sending a brief out to a design agency. Also what is the professional relationship like between the designers and the rest of the staff in the organization. For example do the designers have more contact with specific people within the organization. Printing is also something that I have been looking to educate myself on, I have a knowledge of how to set up documents to print and how print finishes look and feel. Also I know about what different paper weights (gsm)

are suitable for different contexts. In that respect learning about how you go about getting promotional material printed would be very useful. Finally if there was any design work which was needed to be completed for your organization then I would very much enjoy tackling it and if this was the case then being able to design some examples and then present them in a group critique or one on one critique situation then that would also be very useful for me.

Extended Diploma Graphic Design / 2014 - 2015

Self Development / Ongoing

Completing graphic design based briefs which included producing: info graphics, posters, condensed booklets and email templates. Some of which final outcomes have been printed and are now used in real context. This opportunity also incorporated working closely with both the Planet Smart employees and also leaders in the communications department. This meant that communication was key as in some situations there was limited time to receive a brief or to present my design concepts to the clients.

Last year I completed my extended diploma in design. This qualification was two academic years which consisted of developing and learning new design skills, the skills included developing techniques in the Adobe suite and also in hand based skills such as etching, screen printing and producing physical mock ups. I also took on self initiated projects one of the more major examples of this was a critical study on a topic of my choice. I digitally produced a book based around the similarities between contemporary fashion and graphic design which was then sent of and professionally printed with the print finishes and specifications which I had chose.

One of the reasons that Graphic Design is suited to me is due to my passion for self development. I am always very eager to learn new skills and be set new challenges, as I believe that self development is the key to becoming the best at what you specialize in. In this instance it is the path to becoming the most efficient and effective designer that I can be. The way that self development is an ongoing process always allows me to set myself new targets or goals and always keep myself busy. Some people call this “life long learning” this describes more so the aspect of self development where someone would strive to learn new skills, to me this is only half of the process. Developing and perfecting skills is somewhat more important than learning new skills so I make sure to keep that as a priority.

Experience

HelHa is a school based in Mons, Belgium. In 2015 I took part in a project which brought together professionals from a variety of different backgrounds. For example there were participants from France that specialized in finance and others from Portugal who specialized in advertising. Together we were set a project which was to devise a business strategy for an art organization who were similarly based in Belgium who set up art events which were specifically focused on sound art. Some of the tasks that we took upon whilst completing this project were working together as a group to devise the most suitable and effective strategy for them to take in the areas of advertising, creating an online presence and adapting their aesthetic to appeal to their vast target audience. At the closure of this project we were to design and plan a presentation which we presented to the universities staff and representatives from Transcultures.

Education

UoT BA (Hons) Design / 2015 I’m currently studying for a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design in Durham, the courses projects are based upon both simulated and external briefs. The variety of these briefs are very extensive they can be based from anything in the design sector from typography to photography and from editorial to branding. Up to this point in my education in design I have taken part in a project as a team leader with students from Germany which was an external brief based around branding. Another other projects which I have completed this year was “Professional Context” which was a project that helped translate my squired design skills and adapt them to be suitable to be used in a work place, another aspect of this project was to ensure that I had found a personal style in design.
