BARLOW BUILDING 20 - 28 LATROBE STREET
The aim of this project was to produce a building which functioned as a commercial parking lot in addition to maintaing an innovative and attractive commercial space for vehicle sales.
The project required a logical approach to design a building which could be realistically constructed, while still producing something which showcases innovative design. This was all taken into consideration when designing the BARLOW BUILDING, something which is visibly manifested in the final form.

To fulfil the brief, the external appearance of needed to be visually appealing. The facade of the BARLOW BUILDING does this by creating a distinctive yet simple pattern of complementary colours. This allows the facade of the showroom to maintain a functional yet interesting appearance, while the higher floors remain visually distinctive without compromosing any functionality of the building.
The showroom has also been designed carefully to fulfil a purpose, and to do so while functioning seamlessly with the facade. This has been achieved by creating an open atrium space which makes use of the light permitted by the transparent facade.

SHOWROOM DESIGN The 3 floor open atrium of the BARLOW BUILDING allows a large amount of natural light to be manipulated by the lightly tinted glass on the facade. The large atrium also allows for cars to be spaced out generously, creating a luxurious and open feel for people in the showroom, without seeming empty. The floor of each level has been shaped specifically for showing cars to viewers on different levels, without interfering with any up close or same floor interaction.

BUILDING ENVELOPE A. Barlow lived a very interesting life which has been described at times as being both "colourful" and "shady". Such an interesting life deserves a legacy to reflect it. The BARLOW BUIDLING celebrates the colourful life of A. Barlow quite literally - by using bright and noticeable colours to bold draw attention. By arranging these colours in a semi-regular and organised pattern, the initial bold appearance becomes a smooth and rolling amassment of light. This building is a testament to the legacy of A. Barlow, and a stark reminder of his colourful life.
