Left: photomontage/digital drawing of main building group. Right: hand-drawn conceptual perspectives of each building of the Herring Island Discovery Centre. Project: Herring Island Discovery Centre. Subject: Architecture Design Studio 1: Earth. Description: the underlaying design concept makes use of the grid created when creating a light dispersion interference pattern from key points in Melbourne. The shapes of each building were created by choosing the optimal position on this grid and using the shape (or shapes) formed by the grid as the basis for their design. The site was also a key consideration when selecting the position for each element of the Discovery Centre, and also a major consideration when choosing materials. Natural materials were chosen where possible, opting for Corten facade panels in order to ensure the Herring Island Discovery Centre did not have a destructive or negative influence on the existing environment.

Subject: Architecture Design Studio 2: Water. Description: designed in the manner of Alvaro Siza, using simple subtractive forms and a light colour palette. The entire design is predicated on the site where it is located, with both the main and secondary buildings facing down the adjacent river to ensure the best visibility possible from all areas. Furthermore, the Studley Park Boathouse features a number of spaces of varied usage to facilitate the needs of any and all visitors and staff, from restaurants and cafes to boating equipment hire and staff offices.
