ENGINEERING WITHOUT BORDERS

01

BRIEF Create a product that supplies the children of Johannesburg with an emergency lighting system allowing them to go to school during load-shedding periods. 4 WEEKS

01 THE PROBLEM The Johannesburg government own a national power utility and a primary power generator, Eskom. Various parliamentarians attributed rolling blackouts to insufficient generation capacity, which leads to load shedding. Load shedding is a controlled way to make sure that the national power gird remains stable - to avoid a total countrywide blackout.

SWATCH PROJECT

03

BRIEF You are tasked with designing a contemporary alarm clock as a line extension for Swatch, renowned for producing a range of successful watches; having forged their own position within today’s competitive and diverse marketplace. 3 WEEKS

03 BRAND UNPACK Everyone knows a Swatch when they see one. There’s clearly something that makes Swatch different from every other watch brand. What is it? The look, the colours, the plastic? The design, perhaps, or the fact that it’s Swiss made and versatile enough to be worn with almost anything. There are Swatch watches for people of all ages, and a Swatch for every occasion. But there’s more to Swatch than market coverage. Swatch is an attitude, an approach to life, a way of seeing. The sight of a Swatch excites emotion. Wearing one is a way to communicate, to speak without speaking. Heart to heart.
