LMAC Report Toronto2015

Since our experience programming music from Latin America and the Caribbean coincides with the cultural focus of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am games, the Lula Music and Arts Centre team is preparing for a busy year. We’re very honoured to have been awarded one of 26 commissions by the Pan Am Cultural Committee. Working with world-renowned pianist, composer and educator Danilo Perez, local jazz bassist and producer Roberto Occhipinti and the Berklee Institute for Global Jazz in Boston, Lula will gather Canadian and international Latin jazz stars to perform new arrangements by Perez and Canadian composers Hilario Duran and Christine Jensen.

Lulaworld

Still on a high from the success of our 2014 Lulaworld festival which featured concerts by international guests Dafnis Prieto, David Virelles, Martha Chavez, Jimmy Bosch, Yami, Fred Martins and Ralph Irizarry as well as more than v100 local artists, we’ve begun to plan for 2015. In keeping with 2015 Pan Am programming, our next edition of the festival will feature artists from

countries of the Americas with a special focus on improvisation in various musical traditions. In hopes of making this year’s festival the most exciting to date, we’ll be researching and attending showcases at Womex, Mundial Montreal and APAP in New York. While at these events, we’ll also be spreading the word about local world music artists with a focus on those on the new Lulaworld label: The Heavyweights Brass Band, Quique Escamilla and the Lula All Stars.

Student Programs

In anticipation of a new school year we’ve added new offerings to our programs for middle and high school students. Our outings for French and Spanish language students draw on the power of world music and dance in order to encourage language skill development and foster understanding across cultures. Pianist and composer Ron Davis is the latest addition to our roster of educators which includes African percussionist Amadou Kienou, Venezuelan dancer Miko Sobriero, Colombian drummer and poet Ruben Esguerra and Quebecoise singer Joanna Moon. Please email info@lula.ca for more info.
