“Having been born and raised in Toronto, I have lived here all my life and I love it”, says an enthusiastic Ron Davis, SYMPHRONICA’s creator and mash-up master. Davis started his residency at Lula Lounge in February of 2014, after a jazz and classical fusioninspired debut filled the house for three consecutive Sundays last fall. No stranger to Toronto’s jazz clubs, Davis recalls that in his younger years “there were clubs like George’s, the Colonial, Bourbon Street, and Cafe des Copians. I saw jazz greats like Lenny Breau, Rob McConnell, Dick Wellstood, Earl Hines and Herb Ellis”. Now, as a professional musician himself, he is thrilled to find audiences eager to hear a new composition at each show making it look easy – which, of course, as all good musicians know - isn’t. This good-natured pianist/composer has a long and charitable musical history in Toronto. As Secretary of the Glenn Gould Foundation for a number of years, Davis led many progressive programs and festivals,
co-founding and producing ‘Jazz for Herbie’ – a benefit for Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital’ saying it was by far “the most-satisfying contribution”. Ron Davis is undoubtedly an educator, and truly a voice for the Toronto jazz community. Having played his first piano gigs in Toronto restaurants like the Groaning Board and the Blue Angel, he cites that “neither exists any longer”, adding under his breath with a boyish grin “not my fault”. Davis has returned to the best of both at Lula Lounge. “In many ways, being able to make music in Toronto, and bring it to audiences here, is both my dream come true and a continuation of the Toronto journey I began in my youth”. Lula welcomes Ron Davis’ SYMPHRONICA on March 19th and April 23rd , plus a special appearance during Lula World. Tickets at www. rondavismusic.com March 19th and April 23rd, 2014

Salsa @ There’s a reason why Lula is known by many primarily as a Latin club. For 12 years we have presented live 10 to 12 piece salsa bands every weekend, that’s over 100 nights a year! The newly initiated to salsa might think that the bands at Lula are somewhat interchangeable, but a few visits to the venue will reveal the incredible diversity amongst our salsa ensembles. Like jazz, salsa is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of styles with many nuances. Our Friday “Cuba Libre” series focusses on bands made up of musicians primarily from Cuba. Groups like Café Cubano, Son Aché, Yani Borrell, Roberto Linares Brown
Orchestra and Changui Havana have an open style with lots of room for improvisation. Visiting Lula on a Friday night is like taking a trip to Cuba where you might hear a mix of salsa, son and timba (a fusion style that incorporates jazz horn lines, funky bass and aggressive percussion). Saturday nights at Lula tend to be more influenced by salsa from New York, Puerto Rico and Colombia. In addition to original compositions, bands such as Moda Eterna,

Conjunto Lacalu, Ricky Franco, Orquesta Fantasia and Salsotika cover classics by salsa greats such as Ray Barretto, Willy Col贸n and Oscar De Le贸n. While we love to hear great covers, Lula puts a strong emphasis on supporting original material by Canadian composers. (Many original tunes can be heard on the Lula Essential Tracks compilation CD.) Local composers such as Roberto Linares Brown and Yani Borrell are already having an impact internationally and we expect to hear more great Canadian salsa in the coming years!
