A Truly Unique Park
Trains
There is something truly captivating about Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. Since it opened to the public on October 3, 2009, over 1.5 million people have visited to stroll, cycle, walk, jog, and roller blade over its mighty steel trusses. They come to gaze at the picturesque Hudson River flowing 212 feet below, to immerse themselves in solitude, and to reflect in an especially magical setting. Walkway State Park represents a people’s shared desire to preserve the best of our history, our culture, and our spirit, and stands today because the people of the Hudson Valley vowed to transform a crippled relic of the Industrial Age into something new and vital. Thankfully, against all odds, they succeeded.

Walkway Over the Hudson is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge! We’re busy with projects that will impact this spectacular park for generations to come and we need your help. We’re constructing a 21-story waterfront elevator; raising funds to build a Visitors Center; providing activities and educational programs for the park’s expected 600,000 annual visitors; and recruiting and training volunteers to support park staff. Our critical mission depends upon engaged members, volunteers, and donors who share our vision for the park. Please support the Walkway in any of these ways:

The bridge reopened on October 3, 2009 after a two-year construction effort. Today, the Walkway is the longest elevated pedestrian park in the world, returning it to the record books after 121 years! It took another 35 years before a grassroots nonprofit called Walkway Over the Hudson was able to successfully galvanize public and private support in the Hudson Valley and statewide to save the historic bridge and transform it into the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. When trains began rumbling over the bridge in 1888, it was the longest bridge in the world— a title it held for over a year. It became a key transportation hub linking western raw materials to eastern industrial centers, until a fire in 1974 crippled the railroad bridge and it fell into disrepair and an uncertain future. When you visit the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, you’ll be standing on an important pillar of American history. Before it became the Walkway, this massive 1.28-mile steel structure was known as the PoughkeepsieHighland Railroad Bridge, an Industrial Age superstar that once bore the weight of 3,500 freight cars a day!
A Brief History
Voted “Best Winery of the Hudson Valley” consecutively from 1995-2012.
Worra l Ave.
Once a month weather permitting, we turn on the lights at night and open Walkway under the full moon. Our Moonwalks have the best view of the moon in the Hudson Valley, and are open to members exclusively. For information and to join visit walkway.org.
Member Moonwalks Your contribution also supports programming for students, seniors and the mobility impaired; training of park volunteers and ambassadors; and the organizing of community events like the Fourth of July fireworks, art and music on the bridge, Friday sunset walks and so much more. As a member of Walkway, you can take pride in creating a lasting legacy that promotes healthy, outdoor activity while contributing to the growth of the Hudson Valley. You can play a critical role in providing funding to help build an outdoor amphitheater for community performances; a 21-story, glass-encased elevator from the Walkway to a lush, riverfront park; a Welcome Center sharing our rich, Hudson Valley history; and a pathway linking the Walkway to the Rail Trail. Walkway Over the Hudson, the nonprofit partner of Walkway State Historic Park, is dedicated to raising funds to enhance our visitors’ experience. Your contributions provide resources to develop programs, services and facilities.
Become A Member! • The Walkway proudly holds two Guinness World Records as the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge (1.28 miles) and site of the world’s longest line of people performing the same dance. • It’s estimated that nearly 1 million rivets are used to hold the 20,000 tons of steel together. Each of the 4 river piers contains 40,000 tons of timber, stone and concrete. • A series of LED-filled tubes provide lighting for occasional night-time use. More than 81,000 lightemitting diodes use less than $1.80 an hour of electricity. • Walkway State Park’s deck is comprised of 973 prefabricated concrete panels, each weighing up to 15 tons. The deck is 24’ wide with a 4’ 6” railing. • The Walkway soars 212 feet above the Hudson River and continues 130 feet below the river’s surface to compacted gravel.
