Railroad traffic continued until a fire on May 8, 1974. Dormant for the next three and a half decades, the bridge reopened as Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park on October 3, 2009, now the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

In 2020, construction began on the Walkway’s new East Gate Plaza (the area just outside of the Poughkeepsie entrance atop the Washington Street stairs). When complete, this project will create a more spacious pathway, new Friends Pavilion with room for shopping, beautiful landscape installations, and more.
Originally opened as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, the first train crossed in January 1889. Known as“The Great Connector,” the bridge linked the industrial Northeast with the developing Midwest. At the time, the span was the longest in the nation. At peak, more than 3,000 train cars crossed each day.
