Additional seating, more space to relax, an expanded pathway, and space to lock your bike are just some of the features of the new East Gate Plaza located outside the Walkway’s East (Poughkeepsie) entrance atop the Washington Street Stairs. Here, the Walkway Friends Pavilion has souvenirs and snacks for sale and special events are held to bring the Walkway experience to life.
WALKWAY EVENTS In addition to the sweeping Hudson River views available 365 days a year, the Friends of the Walkway host a full calendar of engaging, family-friendly events. These include the popular Walkway at Night where the bridge is open late, the Walkway Talks lecture series, a magnificent annual fireworks spectacular, Mayfest and Walktoberfest food and drink tasting showcase, and much more. The Friends of the Walkway’s all-electric, wheelchair accessible tram is in service on weekends from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. (weather permitting). Passengers may embark and disembark at the Dutchess Welcome Center (Poughkeepsie), Elevator Overlook, Center Overlook (by the flagpole), and Ulster Welcome Center (Highland). Look for posted signage. A one-way trip takes approximately 25 minutes. The tram runs on a continuous loop. For complete information, visit walkway.org/tram.
