Opened in 1889 as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, the “Great Connector” linked the industrial northeast with the developing midwest. At the time, it was the longest bridge in the world. On May 8, 1974, a spark from an eastbound train led to a great fire on the bridge. Over 700 feet of track was destroyed, and no rail traffic would ever again cross the span. Rebuilt and reopened in October 2009 following a decades-long grassroots campaign, Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park exists today thanks to the efforts of a dedicated friends group, the Dyson Foundation, the generosity of many donors, and a strong partnership with New York State. At 212 feet above the Hudson River and 1.28 miles across, Walkway Over the Hudson is the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge. Visitors take in scenic views north to the Catskills, and south to the Hudson Highlands. Inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame in 2016, the Walkway connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County with the William R. Steinhaus Rail Trail in Dutchess County. The park has welcomed over five million visitors from all 50 states and 52 countries to enjoy walking, cycling, and running amidst its unrivaled beauty.
