hat would you do if you knew that the world was heading towards global catastrophe? Would you shrug your shoulders fatalistically figuring that no one would listen to you, or would you try to do something…anything?
That’s the premise behind a film called “Tomorrowland,” which I watched on a long flight back from Israel. It shows an idyllic world created in an alternate dimension by dreamers and visionaries recruited from around the planet. It was initially conceived of as a way to use humanity’s creative genius to overcome the existential threats of things like melting glaciers, rising sea levels, toxic algae blooms, bee colony collapse, and the absurdity of simultaneous epidemics of obesity and starvation. The signs and warnings were ignored, however, and this new world became a Noah’s Ark for the chosen. As the doomsday clock ticked away, jaded scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney) was given new hope and determination to save the world by idealistic wunderkind Casey Newton ( Britt Robertson.) Their solution was to recruit the talents of a fresh generation of dreamers, doers and visionaries from around the world to design a new civilization built on harmony and cooperation. One can’t really expect a sci-fi action film to provide a nuanced analysis of what is wrong with the world and how to fix it, but the core messages were important: our biosphere and social structures are in grave danger; if we don’t act now our civilization as we know it is doomed to; we will only survive by overcoming our differences and working together. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead People are not stupid, and there is a growing mistrust of governments, and big business around the world. In many cases it is making itself felt through violence and destruction, but there are also many cases that we don’t hear about of people operating from enlightened self-interest to do good in the world. On my recent trip through the Jordan Valley I noticed a lush strip of green between the bare hills on either side. The Jordan River is the boundary between Israel and Jordan, but because it’s waters are extracted by all sides upstream, it no longer flows into the Dead Sea. When I asked to whom this strip belonged, I was told that it is actually no-man’s-land. It seems that the local farmers from both Israel and Jordan couldn’t bear to see the fertile land in the former riverbed lay fallow, so they have

been peacefully farming side-by-side for decades, drawing water from wells drilled into underground aquifers. Since both governments have sensibly turned a blind eye, this flourishing oasis of date palms and other crops along the length of the valley is a testament to good sense, enterprise and goodwill. These small groups of people creating facts on the ground have demonstrated that peace is possible when there is mutual self-interest and mutual respect. An additional requirement is the courage and willingness to take action. That’s a biggie, because it is much easier to blame “them” (substitute the name of whichever group, individual, ideology, or organization you distrust) for the problems than to find others to collaborate with and work out a solution. I invite you to read the excellent article in this issue by Jalaja Bonheim on Relational Education. In it she states that “peace is foremost a matter of human relationships.” Building relationships from the ground up takes time and commitment, but is much more likely to result in real peace than treaties negotiated among the power structures. The time for waiting for someone to save us is over, and action is imperative. We are the ones we have been waiting for, but we need the courage to look behind the news and opinions of others, and to rely on our own intelligence and intuition to guide us into collaborations with others of like mind. Find your passion and your people. Use your voice, your vote and your choices well and consistently. Together we will be heard and together we can save the world. Miriam Knight Editor & Publisher

he literature from people with similar experiences seems to be growing exponentially. Many common themes have emerged, as people describe both their direct experiences and their interpretation of the meaning of what they have observed or been told by their guides. Unless you think mass hysteria is overtaking the planet, the fact that these messages echo one another in their essence, adds layer upon layer of credibility.
The book offers a very plausible overview of the human experience that spans time and space. The basic principles are things that we have all probably suspected, at some level, like the existence of multiple dimensions in our reality, and that all have a loving “Team” of guides and angels standing by to support our growth and desires. An Excerpt from The Karma Queens Guide to Relationships By Dr. Carmen Harra, PhD and Alexandra Harra
Ten Ways to Know If They’re Your Soul Mate Throughout my career, I have seen everything from couples who married their childhood loves to people in their retirement years who still struggle with commitment issues.
M
ost of us fall somewhere between these two extremes, meaning that we experience several relationships before finding the person we believe to be our perfect pairing. Whether you’re currently married, in a relationship, or contemplating entering a relationship with a new love interest, it is crucial that you know what role this person will play in your life. After all, there’s no avoiding the inevitable, often uncomfortable question we must ask ourselves: Is this the person I was bound by destiny to share my life with? Or did I settle too quickly into a relationship with someone who can never complete me? Answering these questions honestly can be hard without a bit of guidance. There are ten signs that indicate a soul mate bond (or a lack of) between you and your partner. Ten Ways to Know If They’re Your Soul Mate
1. You just….know. Describing how a soul mate makes you feel is difficult. It’s a tenacious, profound, and blissfully lingering emotion that no words can encompass.
9 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
2. Flashbacks. If your partner is your soul mate, chances are he or she has been present in at least one of your past lives. Soul mates often choose to come back together during the same lifetime and scope each other out in the big world. You might suddenly and briefly experience flashbacks of your soul mate. You might even feel an odd sense of déjà vu, as if the moment in time has already taken
INSPIRATION place, perhaps a long time ago, perhaps in a different setting. 3. You just “get” each other. Ever met two partners who finish each other’s sentences? Some people call that spending too much time together, but it’s the signal of a soul mate connection. You might experience this with your best friend or your mother, but it is the telltale sign of a soul mate when you experience it with your romantic partner. 4. You fall in love with his or her flaws. No relationship is perfect, and even soul mate relationships will experience ups and downs. Still, that bond will be much harder to break. Soul mates have an easier time of tolerating, even learning to love, each other’s imperfections. Your relationship is more likely to be a soul mate match if you both love each other exactly as you each are, accepting both the great and awful tendencies we all have. 5. It’s intense. A soul mate relationship may be more intense than normal relationships, in both good and sometimes bad ways. The most important thing is that, even during negative episodes, you’re focused on resolving the problem and can see beyond the difficult moment. 6. It feels like “you and me against the world.” Soul mates often see their relationship as “us against the world.” This doesn’t mean they isolate themselves from others, but that they feel so linked together that they’re ready and willing to take on any feat of life, so long as they are at each other’s side. 7. You are mentally inseparable. Soul mates often have a mental connection similar to the kind twins have with each other. One might pick up the phone to call the other at the exact same time. They often can intuit when something is wrong with the other, even when they are miles apart. Though you may be at a distance, your minds will always be in tune if you are soul mates. 8. You feel secure and protected. Regardless of the gender of your partner, he or she should always make you feel secure and protected. This means that if you’re a heterosexual man, yes, your woman should make you feel protected, too! Your soul mate will make you feel like you have a guardian

angel by your side. A person who plays on your insecurities, whether consciously or subconsciously, is most certainly not your soul mate. 9. You can’t imagine your life without him (or her). A soul mate is not someone you can walk away from that easily. It is someone you can’t imagine being without, a person you firmly believe is worth sticking with and fighting for. 10. You look each other in the eye. Soul mates have a tendency to look into each other’s eyes when speaking more often than ordinary couples do; they almost “read” each other this way. It comes naturally from the deep-seated connection between them. Looking a person in the eye when speaking denotes a high level of comfort and confidence in them.” Reprinted from THE KARMA QUEENS’ GUIDE TO RELATIONSHIPS by Carmen Harra, PhD, and Alexandra Harra, by arrangement with Tarcher, a member of the Penguin Publishing Group, a Penguin Random House Company, Copyright © 2015

es, because busyness keeps us from making the “difficult decisions” of having to choose what to do. It’s also a method of avoidance, of feeling productive even though we’re procrastinating from doing a hard task. And it’s addictive, a dopamine rush every time we check our smartphones. If only we could better manage our time, find a way to increase our productivity, acquire more of whatever it is we’re chasing after to feel happy! Well, as Crabbe points out, those methods aren’t the answer. We need to focus our attention, not multitask. We need to make tough choices about our time. We need to put our values first, and have deeper relationships with fewer people while pursuing what matters most. Crabbe, a master of busyness, learned to master his busy-

a step-by-step guide to living a happy life and getting what you want By John Benz Therapist John Benz is no stranger to self-help programs, having attended Weight Watchers meetings since age five. When Benz observed a connection between emotions his clients felt related to their possessions, and discovered that people who took steps to remove their disempowering possessions made the most progress toward attaining their goals, he took a closer look at the art of clearing.

hile the concept of clearing is not entirely new--and feng shui practitioners have been advising for years that we pay closer attention to the objects around us and how they are arranged at work and at home--few people explain just how powerful the process of clearing out disempowering items can truly be. The concept of clearing is simple. Honestly assess how you feel and what comes to mind when you systematically view each item in your home, and toss out everything that doesn’t contribute to feeling happy and good about yourself. Benz appreciates that such a simple idea can sound almost crazy, but points out that “... if the memories associated with their possessions reinforced that identity, that’s exactly what they thought and what ultimately became true.” For those of us aware of recent research in fields of embodied cognition and the placebo effect, it’s not such a stretch to recognize the immense and

While the idea of clearing is simple, and the seven steps straightforward and easy to do, much of the value of this book comes from the wonderful pointers and tips for overcoming potential pitfalls along the way of clearing out possessions, and then clearing out residual thoughts. Some of these potential pitfalls include involving other people in your clearing process, as outside support can be tricky. You might feel tempted, for example, to give things to neighbors, relatives or friends--yet this is mostly likely not in your best interest. The idea here is to remove obstacles to feeling powerless--not to see reminders of powerlessness from time to time. At this point, you’re likely wondering how well the ideas in this book actually work for me. As is so often the case in my life, days before hearing about this book, I’d synchronistically felt inspired to do what it prescribes. I’d cleared out some items in my kitchen that had little to do with me, and immediately noticed feeling an unexpected surge of positive energy. While I’ve yet to do a complete clearing, I am now making the power question a regular part of my life. I highly recommend “Do the Clearing” for everyone! Reviewed by Cynthia Sue Larson

THE LONELINESS CURE: Six Strategies for Finding Real Connections in Your Life Kory Floyd, PhD
EXCERPT Introduction
T
“Brother, Can You Spare a Hug?”
hey say one man can make a difference. Evidently, so can “Juan Mann.” In January 2004, he left behind his life in London, England and returned to his home in Sydney, Australia. It was a lonely time for the 22-year-old bachelor. His parents had divorced, his grandmother had fallen ill, and he had recently ended a promising relationship with his fiancé. One night, feeling dejected and alone, he went to a party, hoping to cheer himself up. Sometime that evening, a complete stranger approached him and gave him a hug. That small gesture had a profound effect. “I felt like a king!” he recalls. “It was the greatest thing that ever happened.” His elation was far from fleeting. Six months later, still riding an emotional high from that gift of unexpected affection, he decided to pay his good fortune forward. He found himself in Pitt Street Mall, a bustling pedestrian-only shopping center in the heart of Sydney’s business district. It was a Wednesday in late June, and there he stood amidst the shoppers and businesspeople, the sightseers and families, holding a cardboard sign on which he had inked a simple message: Free Hugs.
16 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
He admits to feeling terrified at first. Would anyone take him up on his offer? Would people find his proposition strange, creepy, even pathological? He’d stood on the street for 15 minutes—what felt like an eternity—before an elderly woman approached. As they shared an embrace, these two strangers in the middle of a busy marketplace, a worldwide movement was born.
INSPIRATION familiar, you’re experiencing a common problem known as affection hunger. And you’re not alone. How widespread is the problem? Consider the following: • More Americans than ever—nearly 28%— are living alone • One in four Americans reports having not a single person to talk to about important issues • Loneliness among American adults has increased by 15% just in the last decade
Ever since that hug at the party in January had lifted Juan’s spirits so much, he’d been eager for a way to give back. “I used to say to my friends, ‘I’m just one man. What can I do?’” he remembers. What he did was start the Free Hugs Campaign, a social movement that now stretches across Australia and New Zealand, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the United States and Canada, and Latin America. Recalling that he’d wondered what one man could do, he adopted the pseudonym Juan Mann . . . and by 2006, he and his movement were famous. A video of his efforts, featuring music by the Australian rock band Sick Puppies, has been viewed more than 70 million times on YouTube. He’s been on Oprah. Free-hug events have taken place in the most diverse of places, from Israel, Taiwan, and Uganda to India, Malta, and the Dominican Republic. Inspired by what Juan Mann could do, people everywhere seemed to be spreading the love. That includes the United States, where free huggers can be found from San Diego to Boston, Seattle to Boca Raton. By all accounts, the movement couldn’t have reached U.S. shores at a better time. As a group, we Americans are starved for affection. Perhaps you can identify with Juan Mann. How often do you find yourself feeling lonely, or craving more affection than you get? Maybe you wish your spouse or partner were a bit more expressive, or maybe you’ve tried without success to get certain people in your life to be more affectionate with you, so you go on wishing and hoping for more affection than you get. If these descriptions sound
17 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
• Three of every four American adults agree that Americans are affection-deprived • We touch our cell phones more than we touch each other These findings paint a picture of a people experiencing affection hunger, meaning they don’t get as much affection as they need and they hunger for more quality human interaction. We normally associate hunger with food, of course—but we don’t feel hungry simply because we want food. We feel hungry because we need food, just as we feel thirsty because we need water and tired because we need sleep. Our bodies know what they require to function properly, and as I’ll explain in this book, meaningful human contact belongs on that list right next to food, water, and rest. Meaningful is the key word. The truth is, if you have hundreds of acquaintances but you don’t feel close to any of them—close enough that you give and receive affection with them—you can still feel lonely. Your loneliness might be situational, if, for example, the stress of a major deadline at work keeps you from sharing quality time with your spouse and children. Loneliness can also be chronic, wherein you constantly long for more substantial contact from those you know and love. Either way, loneliness, and its ensuing hunger for affection, is a condition that many people experience. If you feel lonely, you likely aren’t receiving the amount of affectionate human contact that you desire. And, as I’ll show you in this book, affection is absolutely vital to your mental and physical well-being.
INSPIRATION Maybe that’s why the Free Hugs Campaign struck such a nerve. There’s now an International Free Hug Day celebrated in early July each year, as well as a Collegiate International Free Hug Day that has its own app. Whatever his real name is, Juan Mann must have a satisfied smile on his face to see his movement proliferate the way it has. To be sure, sharing more affection with other people isn’t going to end poverty or solve the U.S. unemployment problem. Hugging more won’t free us from dependence on foreign oil or eradicate world hunger. That doesn’t mean your need for affection is trivial, though. Relationships that offer opportunities to give and receive affection can solidify and strengthen your connection to the world around you, increase your sense of optimism and fortitude, counteract depression, and improve your body’s abilities to manage stress. In other words, it won’t solve our global problems, but it will better equip us to. This book will be a first step toward easing loneliness in your own life. In this book, I will: • Explain what it means to hunger for social connections and affection • Illustrate how common and widespread the problem is • Describe the causes behind affection hunger and the problems associated with it • Help you assess your own needs for human connection • Offer six compelling strategies for attracting more genuine connection in your life Maybe you’ve wondered how you can get your husband or your girlfriend to be more affectionate with you. Perhaps you’d like to take your relationship with a friend to the next level. If those situations sounds familiar, then you already understand what affection hunger is. I can’t recall when I first heard the term affection hunger, but it was one of those beautiful moments when you discover the perfect name for an idea. If you find yourself hungry for more relationships that include affection, you probably realize as well what an apt description it is.

Our bodies know what they require to function properly, and as I’ll explain in this book, meaningful human contact belongs on that list right next to food, water, and rest. In the two decades I have spent studying affection, the one question I’ve been asked more than any other is “How can I get more?” I understand that need, and this book will show you how.
How to Use This Book If you want more affection and less loneliness in your life, I’m inviting you to take a journey with me in this book. Pack lightly, because we have much to pick up along the way. We’re going to begin our voyage by reflecting a bit on your experiences, your expectations, and your common patterns of behavior. To decide where you’re going, it’s first necessary to figure out where you are. Once we know that a little better, we will explore how you are similar to, and different from, other people in terms of how you communicate your affection in relationships and the benefits you can expect from addressing your affection hunger. As we proceed on our trip, we’ll stop and acknowledge a variety of behaviors people use to communicate affection. These behaviors are an important part of making and maintaining quality relationships, and combatting loneliness in the process. During this portion of our voyage, you may encounter ways of expressing affection that were previously unfamiliar to you, so it will help if you can keep an open mind. The rockiest part of our journey awaits us when we survey some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to increase social connections and affection in their lives. These mistakes result from misunderstanding what leads to loneliness and affection hunger in the first place. It’s as if your
INSPIRATION doctor didn’t realize that your cold was caused by a virus, so he treated it with an antibiotic, a topical skin cream, or an antidepressant. Those treatments would be ineffective because none of them addresses the actual problem—and the same is true for the mistakes people commonly make regarding affection. Sadly, people who continue to feel affection deprived over time tend to cope with that feeling in some unconstructive ways, as we’ll explore. Finally, after trevailing, we reach our destination: an examination of effective strategies for combatting loneliness and meeting your affection needs. If you’re considering this journey at all, you’ve probably felt the frustration of experiencing affection hunger and attempting without success to improve your situation. Many people eventually come to believe their loneliness is a permanent state, when in fact, they simply haven’t learned how to address it successfully. The answers are there, though, if we know where to find them. That’s the purpose of our travels in this book. Welcome aboard—I’m glad to have you along on this trip.

The Five
Great
Teachers By Mary O’Malley
I
Thinking back upon the first 30 years of my life, I never expected that I would consider the five things that caused me so much sadness, grief, dread and despair to be the greatest teachers in my life. As a young adult, I was in the depths of darkness after experiencing an extremely painful childhood.
began over-eating at age 10, numbed myself with alcohol and drugs when I went away to college, and at the age of 22, gained 97 pounds in one year. As Life was crashing down on me, my doctor told me that if I continued on this destructive path, I would be dead in five months. In my 23rd year, I spent the better part of the year in a psychiatric hospital and the next year attempted suicide three times. The breakthrough that changed my life and set me on the path of awakening happened while studying with a yoga teacher. I learned from him that, “In Seeing Is the Movement.” In other words, I did not need to fix, change or rearrange any of my “broken parts.” Rather, the ability to see them – to actually relate to them rather than from them - is what brings healing. But it wasn’t until I began studying with author and spiritual teacher, Stephen Levine,

that I discovered how important my heart was in healing my deep wounds. He showed me that the path to my freedom was all about bringing curiosity and compassion to all of the states of mind and body that I had been trying to control or change all of my life. This breakthrough was the doorway to my freedom and the beginning of my journey from living an unconscious life to a life of healing, compassion, and well-being. Throughout my journey of awakening, I have discovered there are five core teachers that are designed to bring up what got bound up inside of us and is asking for the healing of our attention: compulsions, illness, pain, finances, and people. Each of these areas is full of invitations to practice what I call the You-Turn, which is all about bringing your attention back to yourself when you are challenged by life. In other words, be curious about what is happening inside of you rather than making other

people responsible for your experience or trying to fix, change, get rid of or fall into what is going on.
1. COMPULSIONS The first is compulsions. We are all compulsive and you can be compulsive about anything! Rather than being something that is wrong with you that needs to be controlled, your compulsion becomes something to be curious about. For whenever you are interested in turning away from yourself through a compulsion, there is a part of you close to the surface of your awareness that is asking for the light of your attention. Your compulsion, rather than a problem to be solved, becomes a guide in showing you what is asking to be seen and released. You do this through your ability to be very curious, in a spacious and nonjudgmental way, about what is happening inside of you before, during and after a wave of compulsion.
The same is true for illness. Anything that is out of balance in your body is the body asking for you to listen to it and be with it in a different way. And yet you were never taught to listen. Instead of being responsible for your experience (which is the ability to respond), you were taught to try to get rid of the discomfort through pills and surgery. And when that doesn’t fully work, you (like most people) tend to numb yourself out through food, alcohol and cigarettes, trying to make the discomfort go away. Pills and surgery do have their place, but most of the imbalances in our bodies come from the ways we attempt to resist what we are experiencing. These can be easily brought back into balance by trusting that Life is inviting us to be with ourselves in a different way and listening to that.
3. PAIN The third area is the aches and pains you experience. You were taught to contract around the painful feelings inside of you. Over the years, your chronic patterns of holding can turn into painful necks, back spasms and overly acidic stomachs. In these areas of holding in your body, if you take the time to listen to them, you can hear the old beliefs and the feelings that are bound up there that caused you to tighten that area in the first place. In that listening, there is the possibility of the bound up energy beginning to soften and let go.
4. FINANCES Pills and surgery do have their place, but most of the imbalances in our bodies come from the ways we attempt to resist what we are experiencing. 23 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
The fourth area is finances, which is loaded with opportunities to fuel the stories of struggle in our heads. There is so much fear around being supported which taps into our core mistrust of Life. The underlying spell is “There is not enough.” We will overwork to make sure we have what we feel is enough. We will also hoard, manipulate, gamble, lie and even steal to calm down this deep belief. Then, if all of our controlling and manipulating doesn’t work,
INSPIRATION the storyteller will go into “awfulizing,” convinced something terrible will happen. This is a powerful belief to work with, and it is an invitation to meet the feelings of fear and dread so you can discover there is something greater and wiser than you in charge and support is always with you.
5. PEOPLE The final area is the people in your life. They are some of the most powerful teachers on our journey back to ourselves and back to Life. Yes, you have friends, family, lovers, acquaintances and co-workers. But on another level, all of the people in your life are just character actors in your theater of awakening designed to show up in ways to bring up inside of you what is asking to be seen and released. It is the people that most disturb you that are the greatest invitation to do the You-Turn. The more aware you become, you will realize that the deepest reactions you have around other people are when their words and actions wake up a reaction inside of you, especially if somebody says or does something that you secretly don’t like about yourself. The more you don’t like the part that is awakened inside of you, the deeper your reaction will be. The more you react, the more you get caught in the quicksand of blaming, controlling and defending. The more curious you are, the quicker you will unhook from your reactions.

It is the people that most disturb you that are the greatest invitation to do the You-Turn.
LEARNING THE ART OF THE YOU-TURN WHEN A CHALLENGE IS SHOWING UP IN YOUR LIFE IS A HUGE STEP IN BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE. YOU BEGIN TO REALIZE THAT MOST OF WHAT YOU EXPERIENCE IN RELATIONSHIP TO PEOPLE, PAIN, ILLNESS, FINANCES AND COMPULSIONS IS JUST THE STORYTELLER IN YOUR HEAD, ARISING FROM THE DEEP BELIEFS YOU TOOK ON WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG. IN THE PAST WHEN YOU WERE TRIGGERED BY EXPERIENCES IN YOUR LIFE, YOU FELL INTO THE VICTIM MODE. THE MORE YOU CAN DO THE YOU-TURN AND BECOME INTERESTED IN WHAT IS BEING BROUGHT UP INSIDE YOU, THE LESS REACTIVE YOU ARE AND THE MORE QUICKLY YOUR REACTION PASSES THROUGH, OPENING YOU AGAIN TO THE SPACIOUSNESS OF BEING FULLY PRESENT FOR LIFE.

Think Eat Move Thrive: THE PRACTICE FOR AN AWESOME LIFE Dr. James Rouse and Dr. Debra Rouse
T
There are a gazillion diet books out there, and we already know we should be eating a healthy diet and exercising, so it is refreshing to find a book that actually addresses all the excuses we use to avoid doing so.
Dr. James Rouse’s mission is all about helping his patients and his readers achieve the lifestyle and mindset shift to create a healthy life. You can sense the energy and passion leaping off the page, as he explains the science (in layman’s terms) and the psychology behind the factors that rob us of a long, rewarding and vigorous life. His integrated body-mind-spirit approach starts with how we think. Are we buoyed and motivated by a grand vision of who we want to be and what we want to contribute, or is our essence submerged in a sea of negativity from past hurts, self-doubt and the daily news. His prescription for change is based on many years of observing and coaching successful people. It incorporates principles and action steps for kick-starting your day with early rising, meditation, movement or exercise of some kind, and healthy eating. It is not a diet, but rather guidelines on what to eliminate and what to emphasize in your diet. His diet and exercise recommendations reflect the best of current research, and if followed, would produce noticeable improvement in a fairly short time. The “Thrive” part of his title is both an outcome of the recommendations of the first three parts, as well as a heartfelt exhortation to become the best you possible.

BioDental Healing By Dr. David Villarreal
Your Immune System is at Risk with the Wrong Dental Filling Material... And Protective Protocols are Paramount for Silver Filling Removal
M
Most people don’t realize that their fillings can be highly dangerous to their overall health.
W
e have decapitated the patient and forgot that what we place in a person’s mouth has a direct effect on their immune system via the meridian pathways. If someone has a silver filling, that person’s body is burdened by the mercury content in those fillings. If they have a porcelain crown, they might have a nickel-based metal. Mercury and nickel are the heaviest metals on this planet - and mercury is the most toxic. That being said, we are adding another burden to our bodies, which already have to deal with so many other burdens like diet, environmental pollutions, and stress!!
28 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
Bio-compatible dentistry is the cutting edge of holistic healthcare. We do a blood test for dental material reactivity. Reactivity is the amount of change that occurs within the immune system when it is subjected to a foreign substance like dental materials. Once we test and have the information, we are attempting to use a material that is the “least” reactive to that person’s personal immune system. Here in our office in Southern California, we have removed more than 20,000 “silver fillings”-which have as much as 50% mercury. But the traditional way of removing them is potentially a problem. Is it ok to bite into a thermometer? No, because of the mercury it contains. Then why is it ok just to drill out a silver filling, allowing the patient to swallow some of it -- even using high speed suction? Strict protocols protect the patient, dentist, staff and the environment. When we do mercury filling removal, we wear special gear, including two-valve gas masks, gloves and contamination-free coverings. The patient is provided complete draping and protective eyewear. We then lay a rubberized protective covering in the mouth that segregates the excise area from the rest of the soft tissue and teeth. As the drilling

begins, we use a heavy-duty sanitized suction system that ensures that all significant mercury particles are safely contained, and the patient is provided oxygen. Any free radicals--remaining airborne particles--are swept up in the ionizer in the room. Lastly, we have installed a mercury separator, which prevents the mercury from finding its way into the water system and the oceans. That system is periodically cleared by the EPA for proper disposal. While, the patient is in the chair, we have a naturopathic doctor on hand to administer intravenous vitamin C. Heavy metals like mercury are electron scavengers. One of the reasons we die is our electrons are depleted. IV Vitamin C is an electron donor and chelating agent. Thus, it super-empowers the immune system during removal. Silver fillings aren’t the only immune-damaging fillings you can have. White fillings are often problematic as well. Composite resins are made up of a variety of components with different chemical compositions. BIS-GMA is a frequently used binding agent in dental composites, and it’s widely known that it is not good for you. There are too many composite manufacturers. That’s why it is wise to get a blood compatibility test to see which ones you are the least reactive to. Ask your dentist what types of protections he or she uses when removing mercury fillings. You should reserve the right to make your own decisions about

such matters. In fact, a holistic dentist’s role is to educate the individual-not to tell you what to dobut give you enough information for you to make decisions that impact your whole health. Studies show that every tooth in your mouth actually corresponds with an organ in your body through the energy meridians identified by Chinese medicine and other ancient cultures. When you put in a filling, pull teeth, do root canal-any dental practice, it has implications far beyond your mouth. Be an educated advocate for your health and make sure your dentist considers what happens below the neck! Dr. David Villarreal, an international renowned leader in holistic dentistry, is sought out worldwide for his expertise in biocompatible dentistry (matching body chemistry with compatible filling materials to strengthen, rather than weaken the immune system) and the removal of mercury fillings. People coming from as far away as Canada, Europe and Africa to be under his care. HEALTH OBITUARY AND REVIEW
Goodbye to a Medical Hero
For over 30 years, Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez had been researching and treating his patients with a remarkably effective nutritional-enzyme approach for many types of cancer, as well as other illnesses such as Lyme, allergies, autoimmune disorders and chronic fatigue. Sadly, his passing was recently announced on his website, www.dr-gonzalez.com: “It is with great sadness that the office of Nicholas J. Gonzalez, M.D. relays news of his untimely death on Tuesday, July 21, 2015. The cause of death was cardiac related, it appears, as he suddenly collapsed and was unable to be revived. Dr. Gonzalez was in excellent health otherwise so his passing is quite unexpected. Dr. Gonzalez leaves a legacy of faith, healing, and genuine love for people and the pursuit of medicine. Over the course of 10 years, he participated in controlled clinical trials to get FDA approval for this approach to the treatment of pancreatic cancer, generally considered incurable. For reasons documented in his book, What Went Wrong: The Truth Behind the Clinical Trial of the Enzyme Treatment of Cancer, he was thwarted at every turn and did not get FDA approval, although he continued to treat and cure(!) cancer patients in his private practice with great success. (See our review of the book below.) Although we hate to go down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theory, there does appear to be an unusually high early mortality rate among researchers whose work threatens the profits of Big Pharma or Big Energy. We salute Dr. Gonzalez, who joins

What Went Wrong:
The Truth Behind the Clinical Trial of the Enzyme Treatment of Cancer by Nicholas Gonzalez, MD

This book is alternately depressing, infuriating and inspiring. It is the exhaustively documented story of a clinical trial of a promising enzymatic therapy for treating highly lethal pancreatic cancer.
T
he trial compared a treatment Dr. Gonzalez had been using with major success in his private practice against a chemotherapeutic agent, Gemzar.
The trial was so mismanaged and stacked against Dr. Gonzalez’s protocol that after more than 10 years of futile struggle, this promising approach has been kept out of the mainstream oncological arsenal. While Dr. Gonzalez may have written this book to set the record straight about the chain of events, and it gives way more detailed information than anyone but a lawyer would want to read, it’s real importance is in highlighting the unholy and incestuous alliance between Big Pharma and the governmental institutions charged with funding medical research that continues unabated. This is tragically a story that has been repeated over and over since the early 1900’s, and because it is so unthinkable that our own government and academics would pervert the research process to

The Direct Path of Tantra An Excerpt from Tantra for the West by Marc Allen
O
I
Open up to the possibility that there is a quick, direct path in front of you to the fulfillment of your dreams.
t’s fascinating that when the word tantra is used in the West, it’s almost always thought of as sex, with some kind of mysticism thrown in. But if you look at how tantra has been taught and studied in the East for the past several thousand years — particularly in India and Tibet — you get a much broader sense of its meaning.
Tantra is not just “the yoga of sex”; it is the yoga of everything — of every moment. Yoga means “union,” so a good way to define tantra is “union with everything” or “the practice of every moment.” Here’s another good definition: Tantra is the awareness that every moment is a direct path to love, freedom, fulfillment, and enlightenment. Tantra is a path, a means, to freedom and fulfillment. What do freedom and fulfillment mean? It is up to you, of course, to discover what they mean for you — no one can do it for you. Once you can clearly define what freedom and fulfillment mean for you, you can realize them in your life — and it’s not all that complex or difficult. Freedom is being free to be yourself. Fulfillment is finding the direct way to realize your greatest, most wonderful dreams.
32 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
Tantra is wide open, with infinite possibilities — like life is, and like you are. Tantra includes sex, yet it includes everything else, too — every moment of your life. Every moment is sacred. Every moment is either something to enjoy and celebrate or something to be used as a teaching, a piece of valuable instruction, a message from the Universe for you in your emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. Everything you are doing, have done, and will do are part of your practice of tantra. Through an awareness of tantra, we discover the unique perfection of every moment of our lives. You can work miracles in your life by spending some time with the principles and practices of tantra. All you have to do is open up to them. Open up to the possibility that there is a quick, direct path in front of you to the fulfillment of your dreams. It is up to you.
HEALTH The Brilliant Concept of Tantra The concept of and the vast body of teachings encompassed by the word tantra are far more ancient than any scholar or historian could ever trace. The word comes from the ancient Sanskrit root word meaning “to weave.” Tantra is the stuff of life, the unique fabric of our lives that we have woven over the years. Tantra has come to us through two vast, multifaceted traditions: Hinduism and Buddhism. Both originated in India, in all likelihood, although Buddhist tantra comes to us through the Tibetan culture. (If you’re interested, see the addendum, “Tantra in the East,” for more historical details.) Although every form of tantra is unique, some important points can be made about all tantra: Tantra is a way of life that involves acceptance of all life. It does not reject anyone or any spiritual path or psychological area of study. It embraces the whole of life. Everything has its own perfect reason for being. Tantra shows that within every moment of our lives — within every feeling and thought and activity — there are deep and powerful truths that, when examined in a clear light, can lead to making great leaps along our paths in a very short time. Tantra teaches respect for the individual, recognizing that everyone must evolve in her or his own way. There is no one answer. There is no pat system that will work for everyone. There is only

endless evolution, and we’re part of the process, whether or not we’re aware of it. Simply becoming aware is the most important thing we can do to speed up the process and move into a state of being in which we are peaceful and free. The Western world is ripe for the ideas and practices of tantra. Westerners are usually too individualistic and too worldly-wise (and a lot of us are way too lazy) to accept most forms of Eastern thought and practice, mainly because they contain a great many of the cultural trappings from the countries of origin. Many Eastern traditions encourage Westerners to go without sex, alcohol, coffee, meat and “impure” foods; to live a life of rigorous discipline; and to reject a great deal of the culture, heritage, and lifestyles of the West. A study of the history of tantra reveals that its power, its ability to adapt so successfully to other cultures, rests on the fact that it does not reject modern culture. We don’t have to give up sex and meat and TV in order to achieve freedom and happiness. This is the effectiveness and power of tantra. We can create our lives exactly as we want them to be. It is up to us. Marc Allen is the author of several books including Tantra for the West, The Magical Path, The Greatest Secret of All, Visionary Business, and others. NOODLE DRUMMING COOPERATION BUILDS FOUNDATION FOR GLOBAL PEACE THROUGH SUPERKIDS by Janai ‘Granma Boom’ Mestrovich Curly egg noodles were laid on the top of a large drum by each of the ten children’s little preschool hands in an unforgettable, fun lesson on cooperation. The second ring of children waiting to activate their own turns with Noodle Drumming had shakers and rattles to join in the Noodle Drumming music, sitting on the outside of the drumming circle.
F
irst, I demonstrated putting one handful of noodles on the face of the drum, then directed a child to put another handful there. I asked if the children wanted to have that many noodles or more. They shouted with gusto that ‘more’ would be better. I explained that if we all took turns and cooperated nicely, we would have lots of noodles to drum. Every child cooperated with a smile, pouring uncooked egg noodles onto the drum, taking turns and being patient.
36 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
Next I gave instructions for everyone to hold drumsticks up in the air and wait for my signal to begin drumming very quietly and gently to observe how slowly the noodles would move when we drummed lightly. I told them I would give a signal when we could all cooperate together and begin drumming loudly and fast so that the noodles would jump up in the air, flying onto the floor. Eyes sparkled and huge grins appeared on their faces as they nodded and agreed to cooperate with both phases of the drumming. Getting commitment to cooperate was an important key. And they did exactly that.
RAISING CONSCIOUS KIDS
Their joy was breathtaking as they realized how fun it was to do Noodle Drumming in all its phases in a cooperative manner that brought fun feelings to everyone. After the first round, I told them if they wanted to do another Noodle Drumming we would all need to cooperate and pick up noodles off the floor, placing them back onto the drum. I no sooner said the words and twenty little hands were activating noodle pick-up. We repeated our drumming experience then switched with the outer circle, each inner circle child handing a drumstick in exchange for a rattle or shaker from the outer circle participants. There were no arguments. No lack of sharing or cooperating. Every child learned about the meaning of cooperation and what can be accomplished together because they were having fun! It was a huge success with children asking if we could cooperate and do Noodle Drumming again sometime. You betcha, kiddos! There is no substitute for 3D learning when children can use more senses learning a lesson than just hearing words to memorize. In this cooperation lesson they saw, heard and had a tactile feeling experience. A great bonus on teaching cooperation in a fun way was seeing how good the children felt about themselves. They felt like empowered Superkids!
Why Cooperation is an Essential Ingredient in Children’s Lives Cooperation IS the foundation for world peace. Children comprise almost 30% of the world population (Global Population Composition https:// www.census.gov/population/international/files/ wp02/wp-02004.pdf). If we as adults profess to
37 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
want world peace, we need allies. We are not accomplishing a settled state of being in a peaceful atmosphere on this precious home planet by ourselves. Kids are not only tech savvy, they have creative abilities beyond our means to problem solve world dilemmas.....if we give them a living chance to participate. That thirty percent of our population needs to be on board with the peace plan or it will not happen. Children grow into adults. What are we giving them to be prepared for what they will inherit? Giving them skill-based experiences to know for themselves why values such as cooperation are important will serve them in real time today while creating a solid foundation for their relationships, choices and doing their part in the future to assist with planetary changes in a cooperative manner.
Suggestions on How to Proceed with Cooperation in Young Lives The beginning step is to teach fun ways to cooperate. In any skill-based lessons, waiting until children are squabbling and in crisis, are not cooperating and are upset, beyond being civil, is NOT a time to teach a new skill. No skill will be relayed and retained, even if it is forced as a rule, when stressful symptoms are being displayed Unless children have a good understanding and experience with the concept being introduced prior to the stress, they can’t grasp it when upset. Here is what works, step by step. Use the word, ‘cooperate’ as you set up fun activities that require cooperation in order to accomplish results that everyone will be delighted by. If cooperation is taught as a rule that has to be followed without fun as an ingredient, it will not serve to motivate children as much as something that brings smiles. If a child likes a jellybean, she will want to taste its flavor again. It is the same with fun experiences. Note that children repeat over and over what they like. A positive, fun approach brings immediate gratification, happy inner rewards with good feelings, builds confidence and creates a desire to have more of the same. There’s plenty of time in childhood to get to more serious forms of cooperation. Leave a good feeling setting inside children about cooperation and you will see results for a lifetime. Not only that, but when they have been properly introduced to the concept and
RAISING CONSCIOUS KIDS have had a memorable, fun experience, it is much easier for them to recall the concept’s importance as a good feeling to experience and repeat. My book, SUPERKID POWER GUIDEBOOK, available on Amazon.com, is filled with activities to introduce and reinforce concepts such as the topic of cooperation in an easy, hands-on approach.
Techniques for Reinforcement 1. Allow times for children to be creative and in charge of cooperation ideas. “Kaleigh, you could think of something you want me to cooperate with and invite me to join you.” 2. Be spontaneous in order to integrate its meaning into children’s lives, asking them good ways to join together and cooperate if it’s putting away dishes, counting marbles to put in a sack or helping each other with toy pick-up. 3. Create a song or jingle to sing and march to with fun enthusiasm. Here is an example: Cooperation Jingle Cooperate, cooperate We’re shaking hands. Cooperate, cooperate Give peace to the land. 4. Roleplay. Suggest becoming your child and your child becoming you. Act out a cooperationincident that didn’t turn out well. Make light of the situation but discuss feelings, body sensations, etc. That act out a situation that did reap success and compare how differently you both felt, thoughts you had and how much tension was involved or not involved in your bodies. (Think simply on tension....tension feels like tied up knots inside; relaxation feels like soft sox.) 5. Here is a poem I wrote that can be read to children for reinforcement:
FROG COOPERATION There once was a frog Who did sadly say “I want a good friend (“ribbet”...make sound effect) With whom I can play.” This frog, you see, Always wanted HIS way; So all the other frogs Didn’t want him to play.
38 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
The frog thought and thought And felt his feelings, too. He wanted friends to play with So he decided what to do. He knew it was important (“ribbet”) If he wanted a playmate To share with other frogs And especially to cooperate. So to change his behavior And cooperate real well He took turns and shared Then others thought that was swell. Cooperating with others (“ribbet”) The frog knew to be An important part of growing, Having friends and being happy. Janai Mestrovich 1982
Be Creative with Children Ask children to create a story about cooperation and favorite animal friends. Very often young children can relate through animals instead of directly applying a concept to themselves. A puppet show can be fun, too. During the focus on cooperation, be sure to talk about where you feel good inside (stomach or shoulders, etc.) when you cooperate and make a good choice. Ask children where they feel good when they cooperate and where they feel bad when no one is cooperating. Grounding the concept in the body instead of just being a thought in the mind is a key to true integration and ownership of the skill. Every child has the potential to FEEL like a Superkid. When children learn to value a concept such as cooperation, they build confidence and self-worth because they know they are contributing to the family or society. We are fortunate to know how to help children become Superkids and bring greater peace to the planet. Let’s help them know we need them and that their role in helping us is vital. Children need to feel needed in our homes and society. This will help motivate them to feel like Superkids who make a difference! by Richard Anderson unny Taliaferro had speed in his legs, running every chance he could. He ran so much that people nicknamed him Bunny. His parents lacked financial endowment but managed to creatively provide a homemade mit while his dad positioned an old tire hanging from a tree for Bunny to use as a strike zone with his pitches. First freshman ever to earn varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball, Bunny’s favorite was baseball. Picked for the American Legion All-Star team, he lead his team in several championship series. When the team traveled to playoffs far from home, racial discrimination against Bunny arose including hotel refusing equal rights to him. Not wanting to cause trouble, Bunny offered to leave. The team rallied around him amidst threats from fans and rumor of the Ku Klux Klan involvement against the team. An amazing series of events from the past leading to the future brings heartfelt sentiment for the team’s integrity. A HOME RUN FOR BUNNY gives a clear window into the 1930’s and racial discrimination. A most heartwarming ending occurs in this true story, which speaks for the integrity of the team and what choices leave the brightest indelible marks upon a soul. A great book to help children see and understand human value, equal rights, the importance of mutual respect and team bonding.
ONE VOICE

by Cindy McKinley
NE VOICE demonstrates beautifully how one act of kindness can create a ripple that lives on and on, touching many lives. Intention to do something good is at the foundation of a young boy’s actions to gather funds for a peace memorial. Since kindness generates goodwill and peace, a chain reaction occurs from one person to another which began with the considerate offer of giving a seat on the bus to a pregnant woman. Her heart is touched by such caring which, in turn, generates thoughtfulness in her actions and spreads throughout the town as though kindness is contagious. Many examples are given that all ages can all relate to. It is easy to feel inspired by ONE VOICE to think of an act of kindness to carry out as soon as possible, wondering where the ripple will go. REMAPPING YOUR MIND: The Neuroscience of SelfTransformation through Story by Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D.
I
If you’ve ever noticed how friends and family describe themselves to new people, you’ll likely hear them describing themselves through stories and metastories--the stories of our lives.
“There are no truths, only stories,” as Thomas King points out, and yet these stories need not stay stuck in one particular type of archetypal plot type, but can be changed in ways that benefit our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health. Remapping Your Mind provides us with a road map by which we view the inner landscape of our collective minds as the territory of stories we live by. We tell ourselves and others who we are, what motivates us, how we arrived where we are today, and what kinds of challenges we face in the stories we live by. As it turns out, stories are far from passive, inert influences in our lives; they can be every bit as dangerous as they are healing. Author Lewis Mehl-Madrona and his wife Barbara Mainguy share insights for transforming stories from their professional practices in osteopathic medicine and psychotherapy in Remapping Your Mind, with strong support from recent scientific research to explain how and why story therapy can work. Scientific studies investigating the remarkable efficacy of the Placebo Effect provide insights as to how the stories people tell influence mind-body-spirit health and wellbeing. While the case studies and scientific research are quite convincing, I admit that I already know the methods described in Remapping Your Mind are effective--because this method is one I have found to be quite reliable when assisting my life coaching clients over the past sixteen years. I have witnessed the same kind of remarkable transformations in peoples’ lives as described in this book, in which people find profound insights in discovering their story, and as they become facile in changing the landscape of the significance and meaning of events and characters in their lives. There is a kind of magic that occurs when people move out of feeling victimized into a bigger world of more positive possibility, and Remapping Your Mind provides a trusty guide to start this transformation right away. Whether or not you can wrap your mind around the transformative healing power of stories, and even if you don’t yet know what your stories are, Remapping Your Mind will likely be one of your most treasured reference books. As Thomas King once pointed out, “The truth about stories is that that’s all we are.” How wonderful that we have a very big say in how we tell the stories of our lives! What’s Going on Here? By Richard House, MD Most of us are so distracted by the worries of daily life that larger issues are easily shunted aside. Unless, that is, some troubling event intrudes – like the death of someone close to us, or a beloved dog needs to be put down. Do dogs go to heaven?
P
ope Francis reports that they do – all creatures large and small, he says. One supposes that humans who live well get their shot at heaven too, but is hell then a possibility for those who fall short? Let’s hope not, for no one toes the mark all the time.
Besides the pressing question of what occurs when we die, there are others: • Why do we die at all? • Is there really a loving God, and, if so, why all the suffering? • Are we really the same soul viewing life differently, as some spiritual traditions declare? • Do we only live once, or is reincarnation the deal? These questions dangle before us just beyond reach. That is unless one adopts the answers given by various religions and spiritual traditions. The Buddhists say that we come back to Earth time and time again until, until, we get it right. Christians are here only once, which adds incentive to live life well, judgment day ever looming. And then there are the atheists who declare that what you see is what you get – no God, no heaven, no hell, just a void, a cold, silent nothing after death.
42 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
With such panoply of thought, some of us are prompted to seek out answers for ourselves. We are the seekers of Truth, pilgrims that want to know more than what Wikipedia has to offer. God, heaven, angels. Are there really angels? Well, Hollywood and the supermarket tabloids suggest that there are. Moreover, some very thoughtful people have collected quite a body of evidence that there are indeed angelic spirits that want to help us poor humans struggling on Earth. Into the Light, by John Lerma, MD, is a fascinating account of angels that frequently appear to hospice patients just before death. Not only do these spirits lend a helping hand, as Joe Black patiently waits his turn, they also straighten out earthly affairs beforehand.
METAREALITY As for higher dimensions beyond what our senses report, what about ghosts? I’m surprised that ghosts don’t have their own reality show by now – so popular have they become. Of course, those of you who haven’t seen an angel or a ghost are at a distinct disadvantage. God, His angels, and even ghosts, are generally hidden from view, the doors to higher dimensions difficult to find and even more difficult to open, but it is possible, and hallelujah, getting easier every day. Why? Because we are entering a new age. As the aging rock musical Hair intoned, This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius… All fine and well, but what does it mean for the average guy or gal who struggles to pay bills and stay on top of earthly concerns? And what about the nightly news reports that suggest that we humans are not making much progress. In fact, it seems like we are sliding into a hell of our own devising: • Mayhem in the Middle East; beheadings on the internet. • Shootings all over America; is the mall really safe? • The rich get rich and… Ah, the dawning of a new age requires that the old one pass away, and, at this point, good riddance: This age ain’t working. *** So, where does that leave us seekers of Truth? How do we prepare to surf the Great Tsunami when it erupts from the oceans of disgruntled Mother Earth? Primarily, it is an attitude, a reflection of the greatest spiritual teaching of all: We are all one. We are the same soul, each of us experiencing life through a different set of circumstances. We are cut out of the very fabric of God (who exists) and have been sewn together in a patchwork quilt of color and shape, but we are One nonetheless. Beyond this, little else matters. Everything follows naturally when one is prepared to accept this basic truth.

Yes, there are higher dimensions where God’s angels find heavenly employment. Sure, you can speed up the process by engaging in good-person practices. The seven virtues are counters to lower-self behaviors: charity, love, compassion, forgiveness, surrender, love, selflessness, patience, love. Did I mention love? But sometimes spiritual awakenings come to us unbidden in spite of a life that may seem unworthy. The biblical story of Saul on the road to Tarsus is a good example. He, the great tormenter of early Christians, was suddenly blinded by an intense white light that opened his inner sight. He would become St. Paul, the great champion of Jesus and one of the founders of the Christian faith. Here’s another. Stockbroker Bill Wilson, a sad and hopeless alcoholic, fell to his knees and begged God for a cure. The white light that followed carried Bill’s consciousness into what he called the fourth dimension, and his craving for alcohol was eliminated. Moreover, he was able to transmit this mystical energy to others in the new fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. *** Yes, there are higher dimensions where God’s angels find heavenly employment. Yes, a new age is on its way in spite of convincing evidence to the contrary – and yes, we are all One. Let’s prepare ourselves to ride the crest of the coming wave and enter the new age with banners flying high, each banner emblazoned with one word: Love. I
I found the Shiva Syndrome to be a truly exciting read. I went back and forth between wanting to scan the pages quickly, because it was so exciting, to really slowing down to ingest and understand the technical information.
t had a really good blend of science and spirituality. The story basically had every alternative science-based subject under the sun plus the added intrigue of a black op backed by the government. So, if I had to categorize it, I would say it is a metaphysical thriller, while knowing that it truly falls under many genres. The story starts off with a graphic description of a catastrophic event, the profound implications of which we really don’t understand until we get through the bulk of the story. There is a major explosion at a secret Russian lab that leaves behind an enormous crater, and a special team of American and British scientists is brought in to investigate the causes and report back. As the team starts to glean more information, and after some nail-biting episodes, the reader is clued into what is really going on. It is an exploration into harnessing the power of the mind and focused consciousness, and projecting what the ramifications of that power might look like, especially in the hands of a military whose only moral and ethical code is survival of the fittest – namely US.

In one chapter, he points out the similarities between being struck by lightning and getting an electrical shock, then he ties the two together to practicing psychics. In another chapter, he delves into the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and as academic as that sounds, he pulls it off in such a way that not only did I understand it, but I actually enjoyed it. CELLULOID SALUTES TO FAITH AND BELIEFS By Brent Marchant What we believe is what we create. In conscious creation terms, this is the core principle that explains how the process operates. And the range of beliefs open to us, like the range of probabilities they’re capable of manifesting, is limitless.
B
eliefs are immensely powerful forces for bringing our reality into being. That power is clearly observable in the results they produce, too. Look, for example, at how materializations like social networking, once mere intangible ideas in the minds of their creators, have subsequently blossomed into tangible, formidable manifestations. That principle is applicable across the spectrum of creation as well, encompassing everything from physical constructions like buildings and mass transit systems to political and social movements like democracy
48 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
CONSCIOUS CINEMA and equality. And, in all cases, the results originate from these intangible conceptions. But what makes beliefs work? In essence, this is where faith comes into play, the passion that fuels these notions, getting us behind them in genuinely heartfelt ways. In fact, faith is so crucial to their operation that, without it, beliefs would be little more than theoretical constructs, possibilities just as capable of becoming fullfledged materializations as they are of remaining dormant abstractions. It should be noted, too, that “faith” does not necessarily equate to religion or some other formal theological system (though it certainly can take that form if one so chooses). More precisely, it’s something that arises within each of us personally, emerging with varying degrees of fervor and applied in many diverse ways, depending on what particular beliefs and what level of devotion we each hold. That is essentially how we manifest our individual realities, existences tailor-made for each of us. The concepts of beliefs and faith have been depicted cinematically in many different ways. Even though the narratives of these pictures differ markedly from one another, they all nevertheless portray these principles in illuminating ways. They show us how beliefs and faith drive what arises in our respective realities, no matter how conventional or outlandish those catalytic sparks may seem. Consider these examples:
49 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
In “The Secret” (2006), the immensely popular DVD sensation, viewers are treated to a celluloid primer on the law of attraction (an alternate term for conscious creation). This stylish documentary explores how beliefs make the philosophy work, with running commentary from experts in the fields of metaphysics, spirituality and science, as well as practitioners proficient in the process. Through stunning visuals and compelling stories, this engaging release provides an excellent introduction to the practice, particularly for those who are new to the concept. By contrast, to see how the foregoing principles are illustrated in a purely fictional context, check out “Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back” (1980). This second installment in the original “Star Wars” trilogy was primarily intended to bridge the story from the first film to the third, detailing the evil empire’s backlash against the upstart Jedi rebels. But it also offers audiences an in-depth introduction to that mysterious, all-encompassing power known as “The Force,” the belief-based mechanism responsible for driving this film’s allegorical depiction of the conscious creation process. This metaphysical initiation, by far the most mesmerizing aspect of the movie, is brought to life through the tutelage of the young Jedi fighter Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) by the sage Jedi master Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz). It’s great sci-fi fun with a thoughtful, philosophical twist.
CONSCIOUS CINEMA In a similar vein, another sci-fi offering that delves into matters of faith and beliefs is “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008), the second film based on the hit TV series of the same name. Two FBI investigators who specialize in paranormal topics (David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson) are called out of retirement to work on a particularly troubling case. But returning to the vocation they left behind years ago causes them to question their beliefs about why they did it—and why they’re considering returning to it—an assessment that subsequently prompts them to evaluate everything in their lives. It brings them face to face with the beliefs they hold, why they create their realities as they do and, most importantly, what they want to manifest for the future. As the foregoing example illustrates, getting a handle on one’s beliefs can sometimes be challenging, a conundrum at the core of the charming French farce, “King of Hearts” (1966). When a British soldier (Alan Bates) is sent on a solo reconnaissance mission to a small French town during World War I, he encounters a collection of strangely colorful characters. Unbeknownst to him, however, “the townsfolk” are the escaped residents of the local asylum, who managed to slip out of their confines when the village was abandoned under threat of a German attack. What is the soldier to believe? What’s more, given the barbaric nature of what’s transpiring beyond the town’s borders, one can’t help but wonder who the truly insane ones are here. (Examine your own beliefs, and judge for yourself.) Questions regarding what to believe about one’s reality also surface in director Tim Burton’s gentle comedy, “Big Fish” (2003). The contentious relationship between a genial salesman known for telling tall tales (Albert Finney) and his scrupulously truthful journalist son (Billy Crudup) routinely gets put to the test. When the old man’s health takes a turn for the worse, junior returns home to reconcile his differences with dad while time permits. In doing so, the young man must confront his beliefs about his father’s outrageous claims, not to mention why they irritate him so much. That’s easier said than done, especially when evidence emerges blurring the lines between truth and fiction. What is he to believe? What impact will that have on his
50 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
relationship with dad? But, above all, how will all this affect his beliefs about the nature of reality? Accurately identifying our beliefs is crucial when the stakes of our everyday existence get upped, circumstances that become sufficiently skewered in the wryly cynical romp, “Wag the Dog” (1997). When an American President’s re-election bid is jeopardized by an embarrassing incident in the waning days of his campaign, he seeks to divert public attention from his personal troubles by fabricating a war against that menacing superpower, Albania. He’s counting on the public believing the preposterous cover story concocted by a slick spin doctor (Robert De Niro) and the Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) he hires to “script” the phony conflict. But will the masses buy it? It all depends on what everyone is willing to believe. Getting it right is important, though, with an entire nation’s future on the line. As noted above, the beliefs we employ to create our reality rely heavily on the degree of faith we place behind them. The quest to seek that energizing influence provides the focus of the spiritual drama, “Higher Ground” (2011). An evangelical Christian woman (Vera Farmiga) looks for meaning and a foundation for her life through her faith, but she grows puzzled when it doesn’t fulfill her as she believes it should. The ongoing questions she encounters urge her to earnestly examine her beliefs to find the spiritual—and secular—satisfaction she desperately seeks in her life. Finding answers may be challenging, however, until she’s willing to take a hard look at what she really believes—and how passionately. The degree of faith we place in our beliefs comes under particularly heavy scrutiny in the ironically titled “Doubt” (2008). When a priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is accused of questionable behavior involving a minor, he suddenly finds himself under the microscope, subjected to intense conjecture and rumor. But, given the highly circumstantial nature of the evidence, proving anything definitive is difficult. Ultimately, the alleged offender’s guilt or innocence rests with what one believes and how much stock gets put into those beliefs, a drama that, aptly enough, plays out in a setting defined by the element of faith itself.
CONSCIOUS CINEMA So what happens when the power of faith is infused with the energy of the masses in birthing a jointly held creation? That’s one of many conscious creation questions explored in the award-winning French-Canadian drama, “Jésus de Montréal” (1989). When a group of Montreal actors (led by Lothaire Bluteau) is hired by a local parish to stage a version of the Passion Play, the performers seek to present the drama with as much historical accuracy as possible. But trouble arises when they incorporate elements considered too radical by the church, which wants the play presented traditionally or not at all. The troupe chooses to defy church dictates and put on the production as they deem fit, convinced their course is the proper one. This decision gives rise to unexpected results, however, when the players and the audience members begin to believe so fervently in the production’s authenticity that its performances uncannily parallel the odyssey of the prophet whose life it depicts. An intriguing study on the seeds that beliefs and faith can sow provides the focus for the narrative of director Frank Capra’s “Meet John Doe” (1941). A minor league baseball player past his prime (Gary Cooper) agrees to sign up for a newspaper publicity stunt to portray John Doe, a decent but downand-out everyman who threatens to kill himself on Christmas Eve to protest the sad state of the human condition. After publication of the alleged suicide note, readers flood the paper with offers of help to persuade “John” to reconsider his decision. A local circulation-boosting ploy quickly mushrooms into a national compassion-driven social movement with wide-ranging implications that no one could have foreseen. But are circumstances everything they seem to be? And who will have the final say in this darkly satirical, yet surprisingly heartwarming morality play? The unshakable faith of the collective can also yield truly astounding outcomes, as evidenced in

“The Other Dream Team” (2012). This inspiring documentary about the Lithuanian basketball team that competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics focuses on a squad of determined players out to prove themselves to the world. Armed with the steely conviction of their beliefs and, strangely enough, the unsolicited support of an American rock band, this team of underdogs set out to accomplish what many at the time thought impossible. Indeed, as this film shows, it’s truly incredible to see what faith in one’s beliefs can create. The beliefs we hold and the faith we place in them enable us to create almost anything we can imagine. And the magic of the movies provides us with ideas and inspiration for making such conceptions possible. Take a look at what they have to offer, and see what you can dream up for yourself. POWER OF THE HEART DVD by Drew Heriot

When we speak of something having “heart” or of the need to “follow our heart,” what exactly does that mean? For many of us, such expressions seem warm and inviting but are, nevertheless, understandably vague.
H
owever, a recently released DVD helps to eliminate much of the confusion surrounding this often-nebulous topic, offering clear, concise answers applicable in both practical and philosophical contexts. In “The Power of the Heart” (2014), director Drew Heriot (co-creator of the immensely popular video “The Secret” (2006)) presents a series of engaging monologues on the subject, discussing it from metaphysical, spiritual and even scientific perspectives. These insights are intercut with a series of fictional vignettes and re-creations of true stories that illustrate these principles at work in a wide range of applications, covering such diverse concepts as the role the heart plays in intuition, synchronicities, forgiveness, friendship and love. These notions are addressed by a host of new thought leaders, including Maya Angelou, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Eckhart Tolle, Paulo Coelho, Marci Shimoff, Gary Zukav, Marianne Williamson, Mark Nepo, Isabel Allende, Michael Beck-

And, despite a tendency for some of the story sequences to go on a little long, the film makes for worthwhile viewing, particularly for anyone who earnestly wants to learn how to harness the power of this remarkable biological and spiritual tool, one that’s with us at all times and can be put to use in countless miraculous ways. OUR WORLD Excerpt from
The Sacred Ego: Making Peace with Ourselves and Our World by Jalaja Bonheim
Relational Education
I
“Profession?” demands the application form that will, I hope, lead to the renewal of my Green Card.
hesitate. I could say that I’m a Circlework leader, but who has ever heard of such a thing?
I call my friend Margot. “What should I say?” I know I can always count on her for a laugh. And indeed, without missing a beat she says, “Tell them you’re a high priestess.” Hearing my merriment, she relents. “Okay, okay, maybe that’s not such a great idea. Tell them you’re a public and leadership trainer.” This would be true. But in the end I pick up my pen and write in big bold letters: “Relational Educator.” Whoever processes my application probably won’t know what that means any more than she’ll know what Circlework is. Perhaps, though, she ’ll get the general idea that I help people create healthy, fulfilling relationships—with themselves, with others, and with the planet. The cliché has it that outer peace flows from inner peace. It’s true, but I don’t think it’s the whole truth. Some people are perfectly peaceful as long as you leave them to their own devices. But ask them to maintain peaceful relationships with others and they flounder—not because they’re innately incapable of relating well, but because they never received the relational education that would allow them to do so.
54 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
Initially, I didn’t think of my work as educational because it bears so little resemblance to what typically goes on in our schools. In my circles we never sit at desks and rarely work with books. You’re more likely to find us dancing, meditating, telling stories, or walking through the woods.
OUR WORLD
This isn’t what education typically looks like in our society. But at some point I realized that part of my job was to help fill a huge hole—a crater, really—left behind by our society’s failure to provide a certain type of education, the kind that transforms the tribal and the modern ego, awakens the planetary ego, and empowers us to relate in peaceful, harmonious ways. Right now, the majority of the human population is relationally illiterate. As a result, our relationships are blighted with shame, blame, projection, and judgment. Relational education gives us a flashlight that allows us to look within, get to know our true feelings, and relate more lovingly to ourselves and to others. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t want to do this. But most of us don’t know how because we were never taught. Nobody ever explained to us why our ego operates the way it does or how to compassionately reeducate it. We weren’t taught to identify and express our feelings and needs, let alone reconcile them with those of others. It’s telling that we don’t even have a name for the study of interpersonal relationships. We can identify a number of contributing fields—psychology,
55 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
spirituality, sociology, biology, and so on— but we have no name for the art of creating compassionate and peaceful relationships. My job is to help people look within, identify their true needs and desires, and weave a web of fulfilling, nurturing connections. Over the years I’ve been privileged to witness how their lives become more free and joyful as they bring their heart and their ego into alignment. They become more tolerant, more comfortable with differences, more accepting of life’s imperfections, and more compassionate. Because they themselves are more at peace, they can better serve as agents of peace in the world.
A new consciousness is stirring that knows what freedom feels like and won’t settle for less.
OUR WORLD
After participating in my circles for a few years, a young woman commented, “I see for the first time in my life the possibility of learning to communicate in a way that really works. I’ve always wanted love, but I never learned how to communicate in a way that allowed me to get it. But now I know it’s really possible.” At present, the way we relate to others is largely dominated by the tribal and the modern ego. Fortunately, we are not powerless against the collective programming we inherit. We can deconstruct walls that were once designed to protect us but are now imprisoning us. A new consciousness is stirring that knows what freedom feels like and won’t settle for less. An irrepressible force is pushing at our edges, insisting that the time has come for us to grow and expand. That we are capable of reeducating our ego and healing our collective insanity is something I know because I’ve seen it happen over and over. However, I also know it cannot be done without a big dose of relational education. Relational education gives us the tools to translate our longing for a more peaceful world into a tangible reality. Without it, we’re like birds without wings.

It’s often said that democracy can’t work unless citizens are educated. In countries in which a major portion of the citizenry is illiterate, providing education is seen as a crucial step toward democratization. I would add that neither can a democracy work when citizens are relationally illiterate. Relationally illiterate people tend to support leaders who mirror their own bias and reinforce their own prejudices. People governed by the tribal ego will typically support politicians who engage in usversus-them thinking and advocate for war. People governed by the modern ego will gravitate toward leaders who put on a show of being rational and tough. When we’re relationally illiterate, we perceive reality through the distorting filter of our unconscious beliefs and assumptions. As a result, our political choices miss the mark. Every time I go to Israel or Palestine, I wonder why so little is being done to address the issue of relational illiteracy. The conflict between Jews and Arabs is one among many the international community has repeatedly attempted to resolve by political and legal means. Yet despite the enormous energy and resources expended, their efforts have by and large failed.
OUR WORLD
A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. Perhaps it’s time to face the fact that something is fundamentally amiss with an approach that focuses exclusively on changing outer circumstances yet ignores the inner, ego-based dynamics that perpetuate the violence. Of course political negotiation is necessary and important. But to avoid facing the immense underswell of relational illiteracy that fuels our conflicts is like fixing potholes in a road while ignoring the smoldering volcano beneath. Sometimes we lose sight of the obvious. We speak of peace as if it were a matter of political negotiation or strategic maneuvering. But peace is foremost a matter of human relationships. When the relationships among individuals and groups are harmonious, they’re at peace. So if we want to create a more peaceful world, we must hone our skills in the art of maintaining peaceful relationships. Every year we chalk up thousands of deaths to factors such as political extremism or domestic abuse. Yet these deaths could with equal justification be viewed as the tragic price we pay for our abysmal relational skills. Were we better able to communicate, cooperate, and coexist, these deaths need never have occurred. In our society, many people still view all forms of inner work, including relational education, as narcissistic hobbies. Yet look at the major problems on our planet and you’ll see how many of them can be traced back to relational illiteracy. Therefore, I believe it’s high time we stop viewing relational education as a mere personal hobby and recognize it for the urgent collective imperative it is. One of the great strengths of tribal societies is that they recognize the importance of relational education, not only for individuals but for the entire

community. Whereas we typically categorize relationships as a personal, private matter, indigenous peoples believe the exact opposite: Nothing could be more important to the community than the quality of people’s relationships. Relationships are therefore a matter of urgent public concern. As the Dagara teacher Sobonfu Somé explains, in her culture everyone feels a sense of responsibility for maintaining harmony within the community. Therefore, any conflict between two people is considered a matter of grave concern. She writes, “One of the principles of the Dagara concept of a relationship is that it’s not private. When we talk about ‘our relationships’ in the village, the word ‘our’ is not limited to two. And this is why we find it pretty hard to live a relationship in a modern culture that is lacking true community. In the absence of community, two people are forced to say, ‘This relationship is ours,’ when in fact, a community should be claiming ownership.” I think it’s high time that we, as a society, claimed ownership over the relational problems that are decimating our communities. Our current state of relational illiteracy is more than just an inconvenience—it’s a time bomb that needs to be diffused before it pulverizes us all. If we want to create a more peaceful world, we should demand that more of our tax dollars be devoted to relational education. It would be money well spent, for the stakes are higher than ever. Sustainable Economics:
Context, Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st Century Practitioner
T
by Keith Skene and Alan Murray his book provides an impressively wide-ranging overview of the interrelationships and interdependencies among the environmental, economic, sociological, and political issues at play in the world today. They feed into the rather pressing question of whether humanity will be able to continue its existence on this planet with some semblance of order and dignity, or whether our social and environmental systems will break down into chaos. As clearly evidenced from the exhaustive annotation and impressive detail, the book is aimed at academics, researchers, and decision-makers charged with navigating their companies, organizations or political institutions into the precarious and unknown territory ahead. While the authors are both academics, their roots are firmly planted in the real world and the warnings and conclusions they offer cannot be lightly dismissed. This book is at once sober and sobering. For example, according to the World Wildlife Fund, 35% of the world’s natural wealth has been lost over the past 30 years alone. Lay on top of that the growing inequalities between rich and poor; the dwindling supplies of mined and extracted resources like fresh water, oil, uranium, rare earths, lithium (for batteries), which have all reached peak status; climate change; environmental degradation due to agricultural and industrial pollution; and the growing pressures of developing countries understandably wanting to move into a Western-style consumer society. Coupled with the exponential rise in the world’s population, it does not take a PhD to appreciate that our current global standard of living, particularly in the West, is not only unsustainable, but precarious in the extreme. I would say that one of the greatest contribu-

tions of this book is to point out the insular and self-serving nature of academic, governmental and corporate research, and to issue a clarion call for interdisciplinary collaborations in order to have some chance of coming up with workable solutions to benefit the greater whole. Make no mistake, playtime is over as is business as usual. It’s time for all of us to step into our responsibilities as grown-ups and to demand urgent action from those in power, as well as to take those individual actions and choices that we know in our hearts can make a difference, however small. While this book is valuable in defining the problems and indicating where we need to change, at the end of the day it’s up to each of us. The authors are optimistic that we will collectively step up to the plate. Let’s hope that we do so before we’ve passed the final tipping point. Reviewed by Miriam Knight

he authors, R.U. Sirius (no, not his real name) and Jay Cornell have put together a guide to terms most people haven’t heard about, or only vaguely recognize, that describe scientific and technological developments already well advanced and that will inevitably change modern life as we know it. You know those science fiction movies like 2001, Terminator, and the Matrix? Their respective premises are no longer far out nor far away. The book revolves around the concepts of trans-humanism and the singularity. Trans-humanism relates to radical technological alteration of the human body – mind, including genetic manipulation and biomechanical and electronic implants. The singularity refers to the crossover point when artificial intelligence becomes smarter than human beings. Probably the most high profile proponent of this is Ray Kurzweil, who predicts the singularity to occur in 2045. The book combines history, science, and technology with a good dollop of philosophy and humor. It makes great reading for trivia addicts, but also raises profound questions and issues that any reflective individual should be aware of. Dorothy,

Breakout from the Controlled Ordinary Mind by Jon Rappoport
When I was about to release my collection, Exit From The Matrix, I wrote several introductions. Here is one I didn’t publish. It shows how seriously I take what others consider a merely “quirky tendency” of humans to imagine a better and different future for themselves and this piece of space called Earth:
“S
uppose everything that is happening in the human world is taking place in a synthetic space, a grossly reduced arena; and suppose you could stand outside that space and look in. You would be seeing a great deal more than ‘what is going on’. You would be seeing how it is playing out, shot through with delusions at every turn; and of course the main delusion would be the space itself, as if nothing could be happening anywhere else but there, in that place. This is what the mind, all the minds, are telling themselves, as they fight over scraps. Humans have defined themselves as social constructs in small-time stage play.” (The Magician Awakes, Jon Rappoport) The controlled mind thinks in the same patterns, over and over. It reworks familiar territory, and when that becomes insufferably boring, it lowers its energy output and initiates shutdowns. Then it looks for outside stimulation that will replace thinking. The type of stimulation hardly matters, as long as it moves adrenaline through the system. The decline of a society or civilization can be viewed in the same step-down fashion.

Occasionally, in passing, a writer makes reference to the creative impulse as a missing social factor, which could be remedied, for example, by restoring funding for arts programs in schools, as if that would repair a bureaucratic failing and thus restore balance to education and “the culture.” Which is like saying Titans, who have developed profound amnesia about themselves, could recover their consciousness and power by shampooing their hair more frequently. The individual human being, apart from the welter of his social relationships, is sitting on a volcano-range of creative energy, about which he knows almost nothing. This ignorance is purposeful. It enables him to fit into a small life defined by habits and shrunken subjects of interest and routine interactions. Within that space, he forms opinions and preferences and aversions. He says yes to this and no to that. He cultivates a passive tolerance for differences, as if he were auditioning for sainthood. He lives as a social construct in a social space. If he breaks out, it is usually by committing a minor crime. If he lives in a place where war and destruction are the long-standing status quo, he fights the assigned enemy. His social space is the battlefield. But whoever he is and wherever he is, underneath

seen these things. You know a great deal. And you are not coordinated with the new configuration.”
It is the part that can conceive of everything that isn’t, that never was. It is the part that dreams beyond the ordinary facades of time and space. It is the part that refuses to believe habit and repetition and routine and systems are the core of life.
The new configuration, at a deep level, is not new at all. It has existed since the dawn of history. It’s the self-fulfilling prophecy that, except for a few gifted ones, humans have no creative power, no wide-ranging imagination. Thus, they must surrender to the “shape of things as they are.”
It is the part that knows something new and unprecedented and stunning can be invented at the drop of a hat, and that this is the unlimited territory of the individual. It is the part off-handedly referred to as imagination, which over time has been sold away into oblivion. But which never dies. This is what is underneath the common duties and habits of daily humans as they circulate in their lives. The elites who try to control and define the common space of humanity would like to render imagination to the junk heap of history, never to be recalled. They would like to do this by replacing the individual with the group, which has no creative impulse, but is merely, with few exceptions, the lowest-common-denominator expression of any idea. In Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), the overarching government slogan was: “Every one belongs to every one else.” One group, indivisible, with non-liberty and injustice for all. Huxley’s slogan is now also the number-one elite propaganda message on Earth. It can be made to mean almost anything that derides and minimizes the individual and his repressed creative power. In his 1954 short story, The Adjustment Team, Philip K Dick approaches the transformation of the individual into the group as an instantaneous, blanketing, mass-programming operation. Salesman Ed Fletcher, through an error, isn’t included in the “great change.” Instead, he witnesses it. Therefore, he is transported into the sky to meet the Old Man, the Chief, for a judgment: Ed: “I get the picture...I was supposed to be changed like the others. But I guess something went wrong.” Old Man: “Something went wrong. An error occurred. And now a serious problem exists. You have

Here is a statement about reality-creation that is crucial. ---Philip K Dick, his 1978 speech, How To Build A Universe That Doesn’t Fall Apart Two Days Later:
“...today we live in a society in which spurious realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by big corporations, by religious groups, political groups...So I ask, in my writing, What is real? Because unceasingly we are bombarded with pseudo-realities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms...And it is an astonishing power: that of creating whole universes, universes of the mind. I ought to know. I do the same thing.”
Philip Dick was talking about the elite invention of a synthetic common space for human activity. And on the other hand, he was talking about an individual’s invention, through imagination, of other spaces. These other spaces aren’t mere fantasies. They’re as real as real can be---and they can be injected into the world, into the common space, to change it, and to wake people up from their group-

OUR WORLD think trance. The bottom-line goal of all mind control is the removal of the individual’s knowledge that he has great creative power, that this capacity gives him enormous untapped energy, that it solves problems by rendering them irrelevant and defunct. Whether the method of mind control is propaganda, electronic transmission, DNA alteration, drugs, numbing education, indoctrination in values, underneath it all, this is the goal: Stripped of the knowledge of his own imagination and creative power, the individual keeps rearranging deck chairs on his personal Titanic, in an effort to find answers to dilemmas in a shrunken space that will never satisfy him. From the elite’s point of view, this is what is supposed to happen, because then the individual will believe he can only be rescued in the arms of The Group. The individual, operating at half of what he is, will concoct all sorts of rationalizations and explanations for his life in a labyrinth. The labyrinth is how he perceives reality, through the filter of his amnesia about what he is and what he can do. For the links to the sources of this report, click here. But suppose he goes the other way. Suppose the objective is to restore what is inherently his? Suppose he brings back what he has lost? Suppose, finally, he takes a stand and refuses to see himself as a victim of circumstance? Suppose he remembers that he holds the sword of his own imagination, and can invent reality? Suppose he exercises that capacity and thus proves to himself how far-reaching his power is? In his 1920 novel, A Voyage to Arcturus, which spawned generations of science fiction, David Lindsay writes: “To be a free man, one must have a universe of one’s own.” This is no flippant observation. This is psychology light years beyond what Freud and his offspring concocted. This is the power of imagination, linked

as it should be, to individual freedom. Nor was Lindsay recommending some closed-off fantasy existence. He was realizing that, with “a universe of one’s own,” the individual can then comprehend and participate in the common space we call the world---at a new level of unlocked and untangled power. Developing Your
Yogic Superpowers to Make the World a Better Place by James Connor
A
Anyone who casually skims the verses of The Yoga Sutra, the third century root text available in nearly every yoga studio, bumps into a most perplexing fact.
The third chapter on Mystical Powers describes specific causes for supernormal abilities like mind reading, invisibility, and flying. So what exactly are the causes for superpowers? And how can we develop them within ourselves to make the world a better place? Fortunately, superpowers don’t come from radioactive spider bites or laboratory mishaps. Instead, Master Patanjali tells us in The Yoga Sutra that “The powers are found in love and the rest.” He’s referring to the Four Immeasurables: Immeasurable Equanimity, Immeasurable Compassion, Immeasurable Love, and Immeasurable Joy. These attitudes are immeasurable because they are aimed at every living being and because the merit they generate is immeasurable. Indeed, as Patanjali tells us, the merit from these attitudes of heart are so powerful they lead to miraculous abilities. The Buddha first taught the Four Immeasurables around 500 B.C.E. These attitudes were so well known in ancient India during Patanjali’s time that he could simply say “the powers are found in love and the rest” and everyone who was supposed to know, would understand the code. So how can you can you develop these attitudes in your own heart? One of the most effective ways
63 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
is to follow the Buddhist heart-opening practice of Exchanging Self and Others. This essential practice was taught by the eighth century master Shantideva. After giving this teaching, a hall full of monks reported Shantideva flew out of the temple into the sky. This practice has four simple steps that you can put into practice immediately in your daily life.
1. RECOGNIZE THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO BE HAPPY. We are all bliss seekers and pain avoiders. Give anyone even the simplest of choices and people will always choose what that they believe will lead to happiness. Even when people act out or act badly it’s because they are trying to get something that they believe will make them happy. When we can recognize that we are all the same in this way, we can begin to wish happiness for everyone.
2. RECOGNIZE A TENDENCY OF MIND TO THINK MORE ABOUT YOURSELF. Here’s the thing: villains are always trying to get stuff for themselves at the expense of others. Heroes are always willing to sacrifice themselves to protect even total strangers. As you go about your day, do you want to be a hero or a villain?
OUR WORLD Just watch your mind. Do you spend more time worrying about your own problems and challenges or worrying about someone else’s? Think about these two choices like black and white rocks on an ancient scale. Every time you worry about yourself, stack a black rock on one tray. And every time you think about making someone else happy, stack a white rock. At the end of the day, which way does the balance tip?
3. WATCH FOR WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WANT. Now wherever you go, use your eyes, ears, and mind to pay attention to what other people want. Try to stand in their shoes and see how they see the world. Maybe someone just wants their talents recognized with a little praise. Or maybe someone is having a hard time on a project and could use an extra hand. Or maybe someone wants a friend to treat them to a nice dinner and listen to their stories. Stay on the look out for a chance to help like a hero, without wanting anything in return.
4. MAKE THE EXCHANGE. When you see some way to help someone, act. Decide that you will make efforts using whatever skills and abilities you have to help that person get what they want to feel happier (as long as it’s not hurting someone else, of course). When you are totally focused on ensuring another person’s happiness, you are transforming a habitual, human tendency to be self-centered--that villain energy--into gaining a supernormal habit to serve other people’s happiness first. Just start small and build up. Anything can become a habit of mind if you keep at it. And we are talking about going from a normal person to a superyogi. A most curious thing happens if you keep this practice up. Watch as you become happier and the people in your world become happier. As Master Shantideva explains in one of the most important teachings ever given:
64 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW
The total amount of happiness That exists in the world has come from Wanting to make others happy. The total amount of suffering That exists in the world has come from Wanting to make yourself happy. So there is a reason that villains never get happy endings. They are only thinking about themselves. If you keep this practice of Exchanging Self and Others going for a while, another curious thing can happen. You’ll get so good at getting your small self out of the way--and serving others as if they were you--that according to ancient Buddhist and Yoga texts, you can begin to be able to read minds. As Master Patanjali explains in The Yoga Sutra, “With the necessary cause, one can read the minds of others.” One fortunate thing about yogic superpowers is that they usually only come to people who can get their small self out of the way and care for everyone. This is why miracles in history are usually performed by saints who are focused on alleviating the suffering of others. True, an occasional villain slips in because powers can be gained and then corrupted, but generally supernormal abilities belong to saints who want to serve others. Let’s just hope you will use your yogic supernormal powers for good. About the Author James Connor recently completed an isolated three-year meditation retreat. Sondra Sneed is the author of What to Do When You’re Dead; A Former Atheist Interviews the Source of Infinite Being. Since its release, her mission has become to reveal the Great Being we call God, which she says dwells within every cell of the universe. Sondra’s new life as author, speaker, and soul reader with a growing following comes on the heels of a successful career as a science and technology industry writer and commercial photographer. She now calls herself a Godscribe, which began when the words, “Unemployed? It is my assertion you are employed by me,” first appeared in her journal in 2004. Sondra went on to take dictation from the presence she knew as God, filling 10 spiral notebooks over the course of a year in solitude. She kept this a secret for 7 years before sitting down to scribe What To Do When You’re Dead, a dialogue with God that came as a message to the world. Sondra’s spiritual work now includes Soul Readings and Source Talks, in which she allows Source to speak through her on topics relevant to the soul and its condition in the human world. Kimberly Smythe: We’ve all seen the Hollywood, Oprah style adoption reunions on TV with hugs and kisses all round for the parent and child reunited. But in reality those warm and fuzzy feelings often don’t last for long. Above 60% of adoption reunions actually end in tears. Kimberly Smythe’s reunion with her daughter Kelcey, after 18 years apart, is one such case. Her story is one she has longed to tell, and in her book LETTING GO AGAIN: A Birth Mother’s Tale of Adoption, Reunion, Separation and Growth, she candidly reveals the trauma of giving up her child along with the complicated and emotionally fraught efforts to reconnect with her once they were reunited. Kim has experienced the stigma society attaches to the ‘birth mothers’, who often suffer alone and in silence. For more information go to http://www.lettinggoagain.com
