From Einstein to Rumi

I

n an article in the New York Times on June 23, 1946 Albert Einstein wrote, “Past thinking and methods did not prevent world wars. Future thinking must prevent wars.” The context was Einstein’s well-founded fear that the atomic age he had helped launch contained the seeds of global destruction, and a totally new kind of thinking was necessary to wage peace rather than war in order to prevent the mutual annihilation of which we were now capable. In the same article Einstein said, “The old type of thinking can raise a thousand objections of ‘realism’ against this simplicity. But such thought ignores the psychological realities.” It is precisely the psychological realities behind the sociopathic brutality of the likes of ISIS that I have been contemplating. When a group like that doesn’t “play by the rules,” we are at a loss as to how to deal with them. Do we fight brutality with brutality, or do we try to understand the “psychological reality” with which we’re dealing, and develop a set of responses that not only deals with the outcome of jihad, but also with the social, political and religious climate that enabled ISIS to attract tens of thousands of fighters to its ranks in the first place.

and forth across social media. It should be based on an honest attempt to both understand and address the underlying spiritual vacuum that is being filled by these jihadist organizations. Their genius is in stepping into a moral and political vacuum and providing an overarching mission that seems to give its adherents a sense of spiritual purpose.

So how do we even begin to understand the roots of this new psychological reality? I am put in mind of Don Miguel and Don Jose Ruiz’ book, The Fifth Agreement, which simply calls for us to listen – yes, be skeptical, but listen. Listen deeply with both your mind and your internal BS detector – your gut. Try to discern between the political posturing – on all sides - and what people are feeling inside. Try to imagine the anger and frustration that leads people to volunteer for suicide missions. Try to see them as people…

What can we do as individuals? We need to engage with our own religious, political and business leaders, and demand a higher level of integrity and truth in addressing the root cause of these issues. There is no easy fix. What we are talking about here is building a new global society that addresses the aspirations of all. That acknowledges that everyone is doing the best that they can, given their level of understanding and the options available to them.

There are no easy answers here, but what we need is for statesmen, religious and community leaders to stand up and be counted. We need them to speak with integrity. We need them to address the fundamental issues of economic inequality and social unrest that lead to radicalization in the first place. We need new approaches to dealing with terrorism and terrorists. Putting troublemakers in prison where they become radicalized extremists does not seem to be working out for us. A new kind of war on terror is called for here. It is one that does not just to try to manipulate the propaganda messages and play on the passions flying back

6 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

In the New Thought communities, we speak about the deep human need for a sense of purpose and connection. If it cannot be provided in those societies by local communities and spiritual authorities with a positive agenda, we should not be surprised when the vacuum is filled by the likes of ISIS.

It is up to societies like ours to ensure that there are positive options, rather than only a Hobson’s choice between capitulation and annihilation. As the poet Rumi said, “Out beyond all notions of right and wrong there is a field. I will meet you there.” This is the new consciousness. Miriam Knight Editor & Publisher

A COSMIC FABLE AND POETIC MASTERWORK

In the tradition of William Blake’s illuminated books Thirty years in the making, this treasure-trove for collectors features exquisite fine art illustrations and explores the deeper symbolic meaning of the serpent in the Garden of Eden story. A work of science fiction-fantasy, The Helianx Proposition offers a bardic tale rendered in calligraphic poetry accompanied by a rich commentary, along with over seventy original full-color images. “A delightfully engaging tale that challenges our preconceptions of cosmic realities and draws the reader into a mind-bending alternate reality, all seamlessly woven into an extraordinary work of art.” — Peter Russell “It is delightful as a cosmic fable, yet also very intriguing as a colorful backstory to the creation myth most of us learned in childhood. The book is relatively short, and a compelling and thoroughly enjoyable read. You finish it with a sense of bemusement, , and you will probably never look at time the same again.” --Miriam Knight

INSPIRATION REVIEW

The Future of God: A Practical Approach to Spirituality for Our Times By Deepak Chopra Finding God and Faith in Modern Times Deepak Chopra writes in “The Future of God”, “Faith must be saved for everyone’s sake. From faith springs a passion for the eternal, which is even stronger than love. Many of us have lost that passion or have never known it.” Chopra’s “The Future of God” is a soulful, brilliantly researched, eloquently written response to proponents of material realism and militant atheism.

I

love the way Deepak explains in pure, simple terms, “You are whatever your faith is.” Chopra explains that skepticism is a good first step to exploring and finding our faith, as he points out the important differences between bad faith--which we can identify by the way it opposes spiritual growth. Faith can be either a guide to spiritual growth, or an obstacle. It is possible to consider oneself an atheist and have faith, and it can be possible to have good faith--that improves one’s experience of life, or bad faith--which can be recognized by the effect it has in the world. Faith exists in us as the core ideas and beliefs we live by, and these inner beliefs direct and inspire our every thought, word, and action. When we come to know that we ARE our faith, as Deepak points out, “It then becomes vitally important to know good faith from bad.” Every generation faces questions of “Who are we?” and “Where did we come from?” In modern times, we find ‘postmodern’ themes questioning our identity in popular culture and movies, which invite us to more deeply question the connection be-

tween who we think we are and what we think we know of reality. Many are struggling with what they consider to be an absence of faith, without noticing that atheism can be viewed as a particular kind of faith. Non-spiritual scientists can be as faith-based as religious believers, to the point that they can suppress thinking and research in directions that don’t conform to conventional guidelines. When scientists become close-minded in their beliefs, they can often unknowingly become believers in a faith of scientism--the belief that one day the scientific method will solve all problems. Proponents of scientism can be every bit as arrogant, self-righteous, dogmatic and intolerant as religious fundamentalists, which are indicators alerting us to the presence of bad faith. Chopra points out that while proponents of material realism and militant atheism such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Christoph Hitchens and Sam Harris profess to be voices of logic and reason, their prejudice in discrediting religions and spirituality is evident in their use of such derogatory terms as: ‘superstition,’ ‘false consolation,’ ‘mind-

INSPIRATION fogged manacles of servility, ‘pseudo-science,’ and ‘the God delusion.’ What Chopra calls for, in order that God may have a future in modern human society is a new way of living spiritually, thanks to a total rethinking of reality. Chopra invites us to realize that, “when you challenge God, you challenge reality itself.” “The Future of God” is designed to show you “how to reconnect with God so that he becomes as real as a loaf of bread and as reliable as a sunrise.” The heartfelt message of “The Future of God” is that faith can feel like a cry from the heart for each and every one of us. Faith in itself may not deliver God, but it makes God possible for us to feel and know a greater sense of connection, meaning, and purpose in our lives. Ultimately, “The Future of God” is a call to finding the path to God--the nondual God without borders--that is beyond description, words and definition. Chopra apples the same standards to God that are typically applied to reality, and then invites us to walk the path to God first through the material world, then through the subtle world, and finally to the transcendent world of source, oneness and unity. This path to God can seem un-mappable, because these three

Chopra explains that we find God when any of these aspects of the transcendent world begins to expand--and “when you fully remember who you are, you become one with God.” 9 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

worlds overlap and because we “walk” them through our inner awareness, rather than any measurable path or road we can clearly chart. Where “The Future of God” truly shines for me is when it describes the wisdom agenda and the proposition that faith--good faith--makes life better. Wisdom in action can be found in the perennial teachings that encourage us to look deeper than the surface of situations, where we can find and know meaning, purpose, and the greatest gifts self-awareness can bring. What I love most about “The Future of God” is the way it shows how each of us can make spirituality a rewarding and beneficial way of life, no matter how skeptical or hopeless we may initially feel. I love how Chopra describes how the spiritual path changes you as you feel less isolated, more connected, service-oriented, safe, balanced, peaceful, and guided. And I love to envision a world filled with people who feel less isolated, more connected, service-oriented, safe, balanced, peaceful, and guided. “The Future of God” includes a seven-day process of exercises designed to bring comfort with the inner subtle world, and the presence of the transcendent in daily life. Chopra’s description of God in the transcendent world applies to consciousness and how it operates as: pure awareness, pure intelligence, pure creativity, infinite potential, unbounded opportunities, bliss, self-organization, infinite correlation, and all matter and energy in a virtual state. Chopra explains that we find God when any of these aspects of the transcendent world begins to expand--and “when you fully remember who you are, you become one with God.” Highly recommended! Neale believes that everyone is having conversations with God all the time, and that the question is not: To whom does God talk? The question is: Who listens? His own decision to listen and to articulate God’s messages changed his whole life, and he believes the world would change overnight if only a fraction of its people embraced God’s most important message of all: You’ve got me all wrong. Walking Home A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed by Sonia Choquette

H

Having read many books and seen many films about pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, I didn’t expect to be as deeply engaged as I was.

A

ll of them have many themes in common, such as profound inner exploration, overcoming pain and physical challenges, bonding with other pilgrims and the profound effect of nature on the spirit, each story is as unique as the individual. Sonia Choquette’s story was particularly riveting. I think it was due to her intensely candid and personal recounting of the recent upheavals in her life, including her analysis of the roots of her reactions going back to childhood. The candid observations and revelations, rare for a spiritual teacher of her stature, are written with gentle humor and deliver profound wisdom. he eloquent verbal portraits she paints of all she encounters on her way are a delightful bonus. Reading this book is like stepping out of time and participating in the archetypal pilgrim’s search for, and eventually achieving, connection with oneself and the divinity. Reviewed by Miriam Knight

Indie Spiritualist: A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality By Chris Grosso

I

If ever a book needed a warning label, it’s this one!

F

ast, gritty, and real, Chris Grosso’s “Indie Spiritualist – A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality”, is a roller coaster ride into toilet bowl spirituality. From mosh pits to psych wards, from drug use to cutting, Chris’s story isn’t just another sinner to saint story; it’s a story of how to be human AND divine at the same time. There will be times when you’ll want to cry for him, for what he’s experienced, but you can’t because he won’t let you. Looking through his eyes, he will teach you how to embrace the pain that life can bring without feeling sorry for yourself. And as he quotes Henry David Thoreau, cusses in context, and refuses to apologize for his life, he will drag you kicking and screaming to the mirror until you too see the Buddha inside of you, warts and all. And. That. Is. No. Bullshit. Reviewed by Deb Klein

My Lesson

in Joyful

Living

by Kimberly Rinaldi

I have a confession to make; I’m an introvert by nature. So the idea of developing a platform for my business – getting out in front of other people was hugely uncomfortable. Seriously, I spent 15 years working at remaining obscure. Yes, worked at it.

Y

ou see I was perfectly happy with my little life. Perfectly content impacting my tiny corner of this world. Perfectly at peace, until the day I got held accountable. On that day an esteemed colleague asked me, “How dare you not share your gifts – your lessons?!” “What right do you have not to show up for others who are out there – waiting for you to show up - counting on you???” And so it began, this gentleman challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and onto a much larger platform. Within two weeks I had a contract for a weekly radio show. Holy crap! What had I done? I now had to come up with 52 weeks’ worth of content, and guests, and market the whole shebang. Would anyone even listen? I was so overwhelmed it took me six months to launch. But launch I did. On January 14, 2013 Lessons in Joyful Living Radio launched as a weekly show where I could help share lessons in joyful living, mine and those of my guests. The ironic thing is that in less than a year I took that weekly show to a five

day/week program because I found there were so many other lessons to share. Then at around 18 months I launched Lessons in Joyful Living Radio Network (http://LiJLNetwork) as a fully integrated Internet Talk Radio Network where we get to help other hosts launch their platform and share their lessons. And right around the two year mark my show did something amazing – it started breaking 1 million downloads a month. Over 1 million people monthly were tuning in and listening to Lessons in Joyful Living Radio with Kimberly Rinaldi. It proved to me that there is a tremendous need (and my colleague was right) – people want NEED help accessing peace, joy and abundance and so many of us want NEED a platform to share their lessons. I truly believe each one of us holds a piece to this puzzle we call

INSPIRATION life. If we don’t show up fully with that piece, that purpose, then someone else might not be able to set their piece in place – as we are all interconnected each piece hinges on another, if you will. Ultimately we all have a purpose. I call that purpose your life lesson – your lesson in joyful living. And while many believe we each come with a lesson, some understand that finding the lesson, living your purpose is only half of the equation. The other half is sharing that lesson – showing up for others. As a Success Coach, one of the toughest things that I’ve come to see over and over again is the pain of someone who has a voice – a vision that is meant to reach the world to help bring healing, peace, growth or purpose for others and for whatever reason it falls short. Their message just isn’t getting out. They just aren’t finding the right format for being seen – being heard. It frustrates and it pains them, it frustrates and pains me to see them – stuck. And to compound that discomfort is my understanding of soul agreements, the other half of that equation in lessons in joyful living. Look, if you feel that I’m speaking directly to you right now – you know that your book, program, product, or service will help others heal, find peace, access joy or abundance. You know this because it worked for you. You know this be-

cause it’s worked for the clients you’ve served. You have this deep-seated burning passion and desire to help as many people as you can. To inspire others to their highest outcome. You are one of the people who truly gets why we have to walk these paths – why we have these lessons. And why it’s so important to share them with others. You get the other half of the equation. Meanwhile, if you spend just five minutes on the Internet on any given day chances are you are being marketed to by someone who’s offering Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram among other things as the solution to reaching your tribe, the solution to sharing your vision – your voice. And I’m not going to say they’re wrong; these are great platforms for connecting with people. But again, you’re only looking at half of an equation. The thing you have to understand is that you’re playing in someone else’s sandbox – this is not your real estate. And unless you have real estate of your own (website, blog, book, radio show) and know how to convert these connections from social media to your real estate all you’re doing is competing in a popularity contest. Lessons in Joyful Living Radio is part of my real estate and Lessons in Joyful Living Radio Network is helping others establish their real estate, helping others own a much larger platform.

While doing my research to step into that larger platform, to build that bigger piece of real estate there are few things I found necessary that not all formats necessarily provided or shared. 1. 100% ownership of your content – I had been approached by reality TV production on more than one occasion to share my content. Unless you’re the money behind the show or a big enough name, you simply don’t have final say as to how the product is ultimately portrayed – and understand in no uncertain terms, that product is you. While many networks offer full ownership (we do), know that not everyone does – read the fine print.

15 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

2. Partner in development – while the platform I was originally on came light years short of this concept, I surrounded myself with others who had been successful in the industry. Our network offers a team of partners from sales and marketing to vocal coaching and a speech pathologist.

3. Statistical data – many networks are unable to provide you with certified statistics specific to your program. And I’ve even encountered a handful of networks who frankly, will tell you numbers don’t matter. If you don’t know where you are how can you determine where you’re going? We provide certified monthly statistics – program specific.

INSPIRATION

The bottom line is if you’re looking to impact the world in a bigger way, to share your vision, your voice and help others by sharing your lesson then consider Internet-based radio.

While this is not meant to be a fully comprehensive list of what to look for in an Internet radio partner, it’s a good starting point. Internet radio has proven to be one of the most cost effective methodologies for maintaining the integrity of my content while building my platform. And I know there are some of you who just know this is right for you and there are others – like me – who may have to come the long way around to it. The bottom line is if you’re looking to impact the world in a bigger way, to share your vision, your voice and help others by sharing your lesson then consider Internet-based radio. I did. And in less than two years I’m now being heard by millions of people on a monthly basis.

16 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

Here are a few other things to consider while you’re thinking about taking the leap to Internet-based radio: 1. Beginning this year nearly every new car coming off the line will be Internet radio ready. 2. Dollar for dollar it is one of the most affordable methods of marketing and advertising – when paired with optimized podcasting. 3. It clearly identifies you as a thought leader in your industry – an industry expert. 4. Gives you access to other industry experts – your guests. 5. Enables you to create additional streams of income – I have nine different ways I monetize my own programming.

And because of my experience I’ve taken everything I’ve learned and created systems, tools and pull together industry experts to help others navigate these waters. While it took somebody else pushing helping me to see how important it was for me to get out of my comfort zone and step into a bigger platform, innately I understood it was all about getting out of my own way. When you have a gift that the world needs, know that there are people out there waiting for you. You have a responsibility to show up – in the biggest way possible. It may or may not be comfortable for you, it shouldn’t matter. This is your soul agreement. This is your soul purpose. This may just be your lesson in joyful living too.

Lessons in Joyful Living Radio Network offers partner opportunities ranging from professionally produced 52 week host packages, featured guest promotion packages and marketing events, to traditional commercial ad spots. Email for more info sales@LiJLmedia.com or call 888-916-4569

Awakening from the Sleep of Modernity By Glenn Aparicio Parry, PhD

As modern humans, we are increasingly absorbed in thought—rational thought—and caught between two worlds: the outer and the inner. And, increasingly, the noise in our head is being shaped and mediated by our own technology, such that our human experience is becoming more and more detached and self-referential.

M

any of us are entrapped in the shell of our minds, and this follows us wherever we go. We wake up each morning, and rather than taking a moment of appreciation for the miracle that is life, we snap to mental attention. We make an immediate inventory of our egoic self—who we are, what we are, and what we are going to do today. We remain in the shell of our thoughts even as we leave the secondary shell of our enclosed houses, sipping our morning coffee as we enter the tertiary shell of our automobiles, backing out of our driveways, barely noticing whether the sun is shining or the birds are chirping. Bucky Fuller once said that if an alien being were standing right in front of us, we would not notice because we are too stuck in our way of seeing. This is probably true, but more importantly, we do not notice what is natural to our world any more than what is alien. We have done our best to insulate ourselves from the sensuous life-world all around us; we move from place to place within the shell of our retracted consciousness, literally lost in thought.

17 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

INSPIRATION We are not only mental beings; we are whole human beings with physical, emotional, intuitive, and spiritual aspects. The sad fact is that we moderns spend so much time thinking that we ignore life’s beauty and vibrancy. And, even sadder, our thinking processes have wrapped us so much in knots that we have come to believe that our thoughts are all there is, and that the rest of the world is dead. Let me put it starkly. The sum total of the modern paradigm is a belief that human beings are separate, superior, rational, and alone in our consciousness on a dead planet, without purpose. We have all inherited a worldview that is bereft of soul and stripped of life, cut off from our spiritual roots. This would be exceedingly depressing if it were true. But, thankfully, it is not. The truth, as I have come to see it, is that we humans are not superior; we only think we are. We are just different. The planet is not “dead” or a mere machine; it is all alive. And we are never separate or alone in our consciousness, no matter what we might imagine. Some part of us has always known this. The very word “consciousness” originally meant knowing with, from the Latin conscientia, or shared knowledge. The fact of consciousness is a radical expression of interconnectedness; everything that exists contributes in some way to the consciousness of the whole. It is not that rationality—as we have come to define it in the modern word—is unimportant. It is important. But it is only one expression of our humanness, one part of our full potential. It does not, should not, define humanity. We are not only mental beings; we are whole human beings with physical, emotional, intuitive, and spiritual aspects. We know this, and yet most of us still favor rational thought, even if unconsciously. We do this when we compartmentalize our lives, itself an act of rational thinking. Our spirituality, for instance, may be relegated to church, prayer, mantra, or meditation; our emotional life may be limited to interaction with our

18 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

spouse and closest of friends; and our intuition, for many of us, is completely suppressed or marginalized. We, both women and men, but especially men, are trained to follow our head rather than our heart, to distrust our gut instincts and intuition. All of this reinforces and artificially inflates the importance of rational thinking. In actuality, our intellectual capacities are useless unless they are connected to an inspirational source. When we exercise Herculean efforts to control the world with our intellect alone, it just does not work. We may think we are “masters of the universe,” as the Wall Street sharks used to say, but we are in for a fall later on. Even when we accomplish what we set out to do, it (intellectual savvy) does not equate to long-term happiness or satisfaction. We keep asking ourselves, where did we go wrong? How can we recover the sense of interconnectedness we once enjoyed? To do so, we must go beneath and beyond rationality to uncover and rethink the ways we originally sought to understand our world and forge meaning in our lives. Dare to Dance With Your Daimons?

Tension Tells All By Pollyanna Blanco

As 2015 yawns and awakens, what creative dreams have you dared to envision? Around this time of year, resolutions may now be dangling in a delicate balance between hesitation and manifestation.

T

he initial impetus to get going and create a new, with passionate vigor, is now potentially showing early, niggling signs of doubt, leading to possible inertia. Not again! This time was going to be different! As conscious as you intend to be, you may still find yourself wrestling with the human aspects of self, longing once and for all to discover what lies beneath all this annual angst. Often we overlook a dynamic - when we desire change, we invite its pesky partner, tension, into our lives – and there’s no having one without the other. Behind this coupling, the messengers of your soul known as your daimons (not to be confused with anything sinister) brilliantly choreograph the intricate patterns of ‘change and tension’ dancing your soul’s inner story.

19 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

INSPIRATION Let’s explore this dynamic duo of ‘change and tension’ so that we can understand how we dance the dance of transformation. Even the most positive and joy-filled change requires us to let go of something in exchange for something else. Today the ‘awakened you’ chooses to focus on what you do want to create, where the once ‘asleep you’ opted to cry over spilled milk. Why then wouldn’t you want to let go of that mess? That drama? Well, it’s not so much about whether you want to let go of the past, as much as how you choose to let go of it, to transform it. Change requires tension. Tension requires change. In order to let go of something, there is a moment between holding on, and letting go, that creates tension. Whether on the dance floor or in life, the signs are all too real -- our palms sweat, nerves fire, and muscles tighten. We may seek to avoid this tension altogether, labeling it as ‘bad’ rather than appreciating it as a necessary part of the process. Here’s a revelation -- tension does serve a purpose. How we dance with it, makes all the difference. There are two kinds of tension: emotional and creative. The key is to discern how you are experiencing the energy of tension so that you may channel and direct it for your highest good. At times we can get stuck in emotional tension because of limiting beliefs, habits, and patterns kicking in – and if left unchecked, the fears from these can overwhelm us. On the flip-side, creative tension is the truly beneficial force that can propel us forward if we allow it to ignite our inner hero, providing us the prime fodder to take risks, seek opportunities, and grow. Patrick Harpur explains, “What our daimon teaches us is to not always be seeking a cure for our suffering, but rather to seek a supernatural use for it.” In our greatest moments of challenge the seed of opportunity awaits incubation. How we understand and channel our tension determines whether we continue expanding or contracting. Our Western worldview has long endorsed a disconnection between us and our natural world, so it is not surprising that the creative end product has been the penultimate goal.

20 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

Fortunately, now we are collectively coming to value the creative process as much as the outcome. Often less discussed within the process of growth itself are transitions; a multitude of subtle transitions that bridge one moment into the next as we move through life – the larger the transition seems, the more likely we are to notice how one step leads to the next, and so on. Inside theses transitional spaces, is where we discover how we work with the energies of letting go and inviting in. Discerning how to play with the tag-team of change and tension is not a new concept. In the ancient I Ching or Book of Changes (2953-2838 B.C.E.), we are reminded that as we ask for what the future holds, the question is less about revealing the final outcome, and more about how the transitional energies will drive us to where we intend to be.

What our daimon teaches us is to not always be seeking a cure for our suffering, but rather to seek a supernatural use for it.

INSPIRATION Dancing with our daimons then is about transforming our perceptions as we transform ourselves. Just as these ministering spirits may appear more foe than friend at first, how we perceive them determines how we work with the tension they gift us – emotionally or creatively. Once we are clear about our intentions for welcoming change, as we shift from one state of being to the next, a new awareness is required. As we hold the space for the new intention to enter into our life, the remnants of old beliefs, attitudes, and habits may surface for a period of time. Here is the critical choice point – if we observe these old energies for what they truly are – a psychic de-cluttering that wants to happen from deep within, then there is no need to be triggered and dragged back into the fear-filled vortex of old issues. Yet this is often the chasm where dread makes us turn around and go back to what is familiar, albeit painful. In order to keep moving forward there is another option. By observing with emotional detachment and gratitude we can thank and release what wants to move through us with acceptance and love. Even if we shed a few tears or let out a few long sighs, we can see this as stagnant energy just needing to move and release to create room for inspired energies within us to expand.

21 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

By observing with emotional detachment and gratitude we can thank and release what wants to move through us with acceptance and love. As you dream your creations into being remember that life is change, and change involves tension. Exploring how you engage with these tense moments will allow you to consciously shift from fearful fluctuations to playful potentials. Your daimons exist to motivate you to create – not to stay stuck. As pioneering psychologist Carl Gustav Jung explained, your daimons are not under the ego’s control, and the process itself can feel so intense because it provokes so many inner conflicts. Jung described this intensity as being “in the grip” of a force that took over him. Both intrusive as rowdy guests, and as protective as your guardian angel, your daimons guide you out of your conditioned comfort zone into a re-discovering of your authentic self. When we begin to understand how to dance the dance of transformation, ‘change and tension’ become allies so that we can partner beautifully on life’s dance floor and dance our dreams into a beautiful reality.

quiet sadness permeates this poignant little tale of two children, a girl and a boy from different backgrounds who are neighbors in Lebanon. The girl’s family was forced to leave their home during the troubles that have torn this ancient land. The scars of this event make the girl possessive of the olives from the tree that has been in her family for generations, and was a symbol for her of home. The catastrophe of a storm destroying the tree brings out the natural compassion of the children, and ends the story on a hopeful note. The book offers a wonderful opportunity for parents to introduce youngsters in a gentle way to the realities of a complex world, one that they need to be prepared to steward some day - hopefully with compassion. his beautifully illustrated biography of Mahalia Jackson traces her life from her difficult childhood to becoming the Queen of Gospel music. Its complex concepts are expressed in simple ways for children to grasp and be stimulated by at their level. Ideals like perseverance, knowing one’s purpose, being trustworthy and determined are but a few of the higher consciousness values painted by the words throughout this inspiring story. Mahalia can be remembered easily by children as a role model for home grown self-confidence. She faced life challenges with courage instead of being victimized by them, keeping her spirit intact throughout her life and fulfilling her purpose of bringing musical inspiration to the world. E

ach week I asked for their success stories demonstrating how they used the prior week’s skills. Troy never spoke up. But that changed with an unforgettable, shocking success story one winter morning in the third year. I was quite surprised to see Troy raise his hand and enthusiastically welcomed his story. “Janai, my parents were fighting on a bridge Saturday night and forgot I was there. They accidentally knocked me off the bridge. I caught a limb that was hanging over the water.” I cringed when I heard this. It was common knowledge his parents were druggies. Troy continued. “I was scared. Then I remembered what you taught us last week with that song. ‘BREATHE, THINK and MAKE A GOOD CHOICE!’ I took a deep breath, thought about what to do and figured out how to get to shore.” (TV pilot, free for viewing, that

Troy’s sharing brought me to tears I had to repress. My role was to encourage this little boy whose eyes were bright with a strong presence for the first time in the years I had known him. He saved himself with his own resources. It was a turning point for self empowerment and I knew he would have a better life, regardless of his home environment.

Another FUNderful way to demonstrate to children that small, irregular breaths look different than slow, deep breaths is to demonstrate blowing little bubbles (small breath) and big bubbles (deep breath). They see and feel the difference and have so much fun they want to learn more!

Using a holistic, 3D approach in my presentations, it meant using whole body learning with tactile and experiential activities that stimulated children to know for themselves in addition to the cognitive information. Saying, “Take a deep breath’ is not as comprehensive for the child’s senses as having a breathing sphere. that expands with inhalation, deflates with exhalation. Children put a hand on their belly buttons to feel the expansion and contraction they

They felt the tight knot in one hand, tensed body part, then took a slow, deep breath, breathing through that body part while feeling the soft sock in the other hand to feel external calm, matching it with internal calm. I use the external world visuals and tactile experiences to help children go inside themselves, and make connections there with the mind/ body/emotions/breathing. This enables and empowers the foundation for practicing new behavior patterns that strengthen one’s selfworth by acting instead of reacting. It is the difference between feeling victimized by one’s environment and circumstances and being able to make a choice with free will, feel empowered, and make an internal change even though external conditions cannot be changed. We always have a choice. Children who learn this at a young age are empowered beyond measure to reach a state of self-actualization that nurtures self-confidence, self-caring and self-control. When my son, Darion, was nine years old, some boys were making fun of his name. I asked him how he felt about that. His response was priceless: “Mom, I can’t figure out why they would want to make fun of MY name.” He was not fazed. He thought it a waste of their time to do something like that. His self-confidence and inner world skills didn’t allow others’ negativity to control him. Why is slow, deep breathing a catalyst for health, well being and improved academic achievement, for starters? Research shows that taking a slow, deep breath, evenly inhaled and exhaled, brings in 6-7 pints of oxygen as high-octane fuel for the mind, body, emotions, nerve, tissues, and all other parts of the human body. Short, irregular breathing that occurs when one is tense and stressed brings in 1-2 pints of oxygen. What is the difference? Deep breathing is maximum oxygen intake and gives proper fuel for thinking positively, making clear decisions, learning and absorbing information, being able to communicate clearly, feeling good, etc. Insufficient oxygen lends itself to irri-

The Mayo Clinic research indicates that deep breathing with relaxation techniques provide these benefits: *Reduces stress symptoms *Slows heart rate *Slows breathing rate *Reduces activity of stress hormones *Increases blood flow to major muscles *Reduces muscle tension and chronic pain *Improves concentration and mood *Lowers fatigue *Reduces anger and frustration *Boosts confidence to handle problems Children are continually drawn to superheroes with superpowers. NATURAL REMEDIES for Inflammation

I

By Christopher Vasey N.D.

first became aware of this author through his book the role of the acid – alkaline balance in the body, and the effects of an acidic internal terrain in lowering the defenses of our immune system. In this book, Vasey focuses on the role of inflammation – an emergency response by the body to deal with circumstances ranging from trauma to microbial invaders. It is important to understand that inflammation is a natural process, and is the body doing the best it can to deal with an external threat. Although inflammation is associated with pain, suppressing inflammation may make you feel better in the short term – and there’s nothing wrong with that – but if the substance used to deal with the inflammation has toxic side effects, it may leave you worse off in the long run. Many of the drugs used to treat inflammation has been isolated from natural herbs and then synthesized in the laboratory. That enables the drug companies to patent them and make money. The natural substances from which they were derived,

however, contain a range of cofactors that both enhance their effectiveness and eliminate to a great extent any side effects. Knowledge is the real gift in this book. Vasey gives an extensive list of plants, each with botanical a description, history of use, it’s properties and its indications. He explains which organs and conditions each plant is most effective for and exactly how to prepare and use it. This book is a wonderful reference to have on hand. One of the easiest messages to take away and to implement is the use of fish oil as a very potent anti-inflammatory. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most potent weapons in the anti-inflammatory arsenal. Dr. Vasey also talks about the benefits of hydrotherapy – the application of hot and cold compresses or showers or baths. It is so useful to be able to look up natural and inexpensive remedies that don’t leave a toxic calling card. This book is a wonderful addition to any home reference library. The Five Steps

to Healing the Highly

Sensitive Person By Dave Markowitz If you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), or empath, you are not alone. There are an estimated 40 million HSPs in America alone. HSPs often face unique challenges; mainly, healing modalities that work for most people don’t always work for us.

A

lso, it is very difficult to thrive in a culture where our sensitivities are seen as something to cure or repress – rather than be embraced. Yet, when understood and used appropriately, our empathic abilities can be a divine gift – one that allows us to heal, thrive, and to better serve all humankind. I was a successful medical intuitive and energy healer for years but in denial of my extreme sensitivity to others’ energies. One day, I had a most unusual wakeup call. The catalyst was an atypical evening out with friends, visiting several bars. I drank no alcohol, only water, the entire evening; but because of my sensitivities, I found myself getting drunk – yes, drunk – as in slur-my-words, unable-to-walk-a-straight-line drunk. Even in this empathic stupor, I knew this was a message not just for me but also for thousands of other highly sensitive people.

29 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

As a way of training me to better handle being an HSP, the Universe then sent me a string of highly sensitive clients. Moreover, these clients had some astonishing similarities:

HEALTH • They had done a large amount of selfgrowth and healing work, yet nothing had permanently shifted their emotional or physical pain or illness; • They had an inflated sense of responsibility; and • They were all highly sensitive, intuitive, or empathic. My job? To teach them what I had not yet understood myself. Fortunately, my intuitive abilities let me clearly hear and share what I now call The Five Steps to Healing the Highly Sensitive Person. While some people can do these and get spectacular results quickly, others need more time and patience. If you don›t get immediate results, think about it as if you’re learning a new language. The effects are cumulative; just do your best each day! Here is a short summary of the steps I›ve been working with for the last four years. They›ve raised awareness of empathic illness and have helped thousands of people when all else has failed.

1. Determine True Responsibility Too many HSPs feel responsible for healing the emotional or physical pain of others – either a loved one, a social issue, or the world. This is the metaphysical equivalent of carrying a loved one (or several!) on your back. How long can you do that without getting fatigued? When an HSP operates from this paradigm of responsibility—and its associated guilt, fear, and shame—(s)he becomes resentful, as it is against the HSP’s higher knowing. In turn, resentment closes down your energy field, leaving you more susceptible to other people’s pain and illness. It is important to know that even if you are being paid to be a healer, your responsibility is not “to heal” others (by absorbing what’s not yours) but to love them unconditionally. This is what leads to healing—for them and for you.

30 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

While you may take on another person’s issues with the best of intentions, it is actually a power trip disguised as a good deed. Even worse, perhaps, it’s a missed opportunity for the other person. Our job is to be compassionate but not take on other’s stuff—to embrace each person wherever they are on their journey, guiding them from a higher place than our own egoic needs. Others need what is theirs; their soul signed up for it. Metaphysically speaking, you are not responsible for the soul path of anyone besides yourself.

2. The Keyhole A trained empath’s gift lies in their ability to tune in so that they can see what is needed in a particular situation, elevating their awareness of and compassion for the other person. That is why HSPs make the best healers! This is your divine gift! But many HSPs block incoming energy out of fear of empathic overwhelm. This blocks the good as well as the bad, because it’s very difficult to allow one while denying the other. If you’ve been wondering, “Why have I not yet healed?” or “What is my right livelihood?” or “Where is my soulmate?” trust that the answers are just on the other side of the very wall you’ve put up for protection. Opening up to this information, while effectively letting other people’s negative energy go through you, is the difference between a skilled empath and a walking sponge.

3. The Body Scan I’ve broken down energetic blockages into two categories for the Highly Sensitive Person: what’s yours and what’s not yours. You can’t get

results addressing what is not yours using the tools for what is yours. (The reverse is also true.) This is why so many of the HSPs I worked with hadn’t experienced permanent results, even after seemingly trying every practitioner and modality available. Go slowly inward and ask your body what type of energy you’ve absorbed, whose it is, and where it is being stored—and be open to hearing or feeling something unexpected!

4. Return to Sender Once we know what we’re dealing with, we must metaphysically return it to the original person we’ve absorbed it from. “Cord cuts” and random “Sending it back to the Universe” techniques are all very well; however, they do not teach you how to become a strong, connected empath, capable of opening up your heart at any time without fear of energetic or emotional overwhelm.

5. Recalibration Typically, after doing the first four steps, you will find yourself feeling alive, open, and spacious. This can be disorienting, as feeling so good may be unfamiliar! Recalibration is a form of energy medicine that anyone can do. Sitting BIO Dave Markowitz is a medical intuitive who has helped thousands on their journey toward wholeness. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Find Out What It Means To You

Advice on your most important relationship from psychologist Dr. Denee Jordan We’ve all heard it, “You have to love yourself before you love anyone else.” Actually, this isn’t true. In fact, most of us love other people much more easily than we love ourselves. Frequently, we even love our pets more easily. However, though we can love others without loving ourselves, the truth is our relationships are much healthier when we do. We can’t feel true contentment unless we learn to love, and even more importantly, respect ourselves. When we do not respect ourselves, it manifests in all of our relationships.

I

t can manifest as irritability, hyper-sensitivity, or being overly critical of other people. All of our interactions are distorted to a certain degree, but it is our own happiness that is impacted the most.

Respect is considered a key element in any loving relationship, including self-love. Self-respect, however, is a learned skill that many people are never taught. We are taught that we should have self-respect, but not how to get it. Too frequently the belief is that we can earn self-respect by making enough money, pleasing others, getting promoted, losing weight and so forth. In actuality, the opposite is true; self-respect is the precursor to success.

Respect is considered a key element in any loving relationship, including self-love. 32 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

We need to be honest about who we are and accept ourselves as completely as possible, including the things we think are ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’. So how do we learn to respect ourselves if we are not yet, in society’s terms, beautiful, fit, talented, or wealthy? It is no small feat to be a surviving Human Being in our present society. In fact, it is amazing! Nobody but you knows what your experience has been. Gaining self-respect involves recognizing the effort you have put into living your life, no matter your present circumstances- acknowledging all of the time and energy you have spent struggling, loving, hurting, suffering, discovering, working, succeeding, failing, and feeling frustration, joy and disappointment in order to be alive in the present moment. Notice that there is no mention of culling only the ‘good’ parts of your life for examination. All of your life has had value! Take obesity, for example. In today’s society, most overweight people feel badly about themselves because of a perceived notion that they are somehow ‘lesser than’ because of their weight. They try all kinds of diets to shed pounds and beat themselves up when they gain them back, sinking lower and lower into self-disrespect. What a tremendous shift there would be if, on the other hand, they were to add up all the pounds they had lost and gained, the money they had spent on weight-loss treatments, the time spent worrying, feeling isolated and depressed and said to themselves, “Wow! I am amazing! How wonderful that I can invest all of that emotion, energy, and time into trying to feel better! I have actually demonstrated tremendous ability!” The self-respect they would gain with that recognition would be the impetus for true, lasting change. Remember, self-respect precedes success! Self-respect requires that we give ourselves credit for our efforts, without exception. One might say,

33 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

“Yes, but I know better.” Knowing is not enough; we only do what we have learned. If we had learned better, we would have done better. We need to be honest about who we are and accept ourselves as completely as possible, including the things we think are ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’. We might hear, “That’s crazy! If I accept myself, nothing will change.” Though it may seem counterintuitive, finding the value in respecting ourselves even for the ‘bad’ choices we may have made paves the way for positive change. Respecting ourselves does not necessarily mean that everything is the way we want it; it is a decision to accept and honor ourselves as we are so that we can move forward positively! FINDING LOVE OR SELF-RESPECT DOESN’T NECESSARILY INVOLVE CHANGING ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT THIS MINUTE. IT INVOLVES FINDING THE COURAGE TO GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT FOR ALL OF THE REMARKABLE EFFORT YOU HAVE PUT INTO LIVING, REGARDLESS OF YOUR PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES; KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE DONE THE BEST YOU COULD HAVE DONE BASED UPON WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED UP TO THIS POINT. READY TO CHANGE? TRY COMING FROM A PLACE OF SELF-RESPECT AND SELF-ACCEPTANCE FIRST. IT WILL MAKE ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE, BECAUSE IT IS TRUE THAT OTHER PEOPLE WILL NOT TREAT US ANY BETTER THAN WE TREAT OURSELVES. WE ATTRACT PEOPLE INTO OUR LIVES WHO MIRROR OUR PERCEPTION OF OURSELVES. GIVE YOURSELF RESPECT, COMPASSION, AND GRATITUDE, AND IT WILL BE RETURNED.

Voice Yoga is about using sound as a path for self realization, using voice as a way to raise our vibrational frequency and attract into our lives what we need to thrive, while applying the principles of Yoga - an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. All things of soul have a voice. Life sings. The moment we are able to listen to our soul, our body begins to share its ancient wisdom. In the practice of Voice Yoga the ultimate aim is one of self-development and realization. Our soul has a frequency. Listen closely and you can tune it. If you feel out of sorts, not in alignment with a truth, use your voice to re-harmonize. If you feel deep sadness, let your voice to release and heal. If you feel ecstasy, allow your voice to shower the world with laughter. Voice Yoga gives you tools to re-balance your body-mind-spirit instrument. When sickness occurs, it is a sign that Nature has gone off course because of a physical or mental imbalance. The road to health for everyone is through moderation, harmony, and a ‘sound mind in a sound body’.” ~ Jostein Gaarder, Sophie’s World Why use the term sound mind and sound body to describe health? Because in the beginning there was sound. The “uni-verse” is created from sound. Our universe is filled with diversity of color and frequency. Conversation is the fabric that holds our life together. Poetry and songs are the verse that hold our hearts together. The world is created from our words and music is the soundtrack of our lives.

the sounds in your environment as nurturing or harmful? How can we move from harm to harmony through the use of sound? TONE - extended sound becomes tone. In the simplest definition, tone is sound in time. Toning requires us to not only produce sound, but consciously create a certain sound, enabling us to consistently repeat the tones for a certain length of time. Each tone has a frequency or pitch that can be measured and repeated. Tone also allows us to begin to understand harmony. Once we move from sound to tone, we can begin adding other instruments, such as piano, or guitar, or harmonium. In Voice Yoga we begin with feeling at home with one root tone. “Every tone is an event. A tone contains limitless possibilities. Musical tones are conveyers of life force. Hearing music means hearing an action of forces.” ~ Victor Zuckerkandl, from his book Sound and Symbol. SEED SYLLABLES - think of poetry and books as a luscious garden. Yet where are the seeds for all the words we know? These can be found in seed syllables. Different cultures have different seed syllables, yet all capture the essence of moving from sound into tone and tone into language. Seed syllables have the open round feminine quality of the vowels merged with the closed male aspect of the consonant. The beauty of learning and singing seed syllables is that you can tune your body-mind-spirit and discover the beauty not only of A E I O U but also sung sounds such as Y M L R.

The following components can be found as part of the VOICE YOGA practice. BREATH - without breath there is no life. Without breath there is no tone. All voice yoga practices use the awareness of breath to help connect to the moment where breath meets sound. With breath we give and receive life. The more awareness we give to opening and deepening our breath, the more we can tap into huge fields of energy. The essence is, the more life energy we have, the more alive we become. SOUND - It is said that sound gives birth to all creations. Sound is everywhere. Take a moment to listen. You might hear the wind. A cat. A bird. Cars. A voice singing. Listen to the sounds that surround you every day. Can you find beauty within sound? Are you surrounded by noise is your workplace or sounds of nature? Do you perceive

RETURN TO THE BRAIN OF EDEN:

Restoring the Connection between Neurochemistry and Consciousness

I

By Tony Wright and Graham Gynn

n this fascinating book, authors the authors chart the devolution of the human brain over the course of the last several million years. Devolution, you say? You thought we were always evolving? Aren’t our brains supposed to be at the pinnacle of our journey here on Earth? It’s a bit more complicated than that. Return to the Brain of Eden is ultimately about how “a single divine self was split into two, and the more fallen, delusional self assumed control.” That’s putting it mildly. Tracing back the ancestral lineage to our rain-forest inhabiting forebears, Wright and Gynn argue that a change from the chemical and nutrient rich fruit-based diet our distant ancestors survived and thrived on for millions of years to one heavily dependent on the grains, dairy and meat reversed what had been the steady growth of the size and ability of the human brain. This change has resulted in a left-brain, testosterone-drive culture obsessed with violence and power. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. Throughout the book, Wright and Gynn describe in great detail the origin of the human brain. The fruit-based diet was key to the exponential growth

40 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

of our early brain, since it was literally at one with nature, steeped as it was in the “hormone rich sex organs of plants.” At some point along the way, the split in our brains became a split in consciousness. This split into two hemispheres initiated the reversal of brain growth and the subsequent dominance of the left side, characterized as the linear, verbal and predominantly masculine half, over the right’s more creative, feminine side. To put it simply, the main effect of this left brain dominance is a world driven by the psychosis of power over rather than by power with. Admittedly, my summary here doesn’t do the book justice. I was captivated by this book and found Wright’s and Gynn’s theory utterly convincing. In fact, I was reminded of another very important book on a very similar subject, Leonard Shlain’s The Goddess Versus the Alphabet. Both books describe an alternate view of history centered around the development of human consciousness. They ultimately make a case for the responsibility of consciousness: the responsibility to reflect on its origins, realign itself with its higher purpose and try, try again. Highly recommended. METAREALITY REVIEW & INTERVIEW

BE A GENIE: Create Love, Success and Happiness by Maureen J St. Germain There are a lot of books out there about manifestation and using the law of attraction, but this one stood out for me. It is positioned at the intersection of intuition, quantum physics and sacred geometry and is an integration of science and mysticism with a pretty savvy understanding of human psychology.

S

ay you were to have a genie standing by to grant your dearest wish – would you know what to wish for? We hear many reports of people who won the lottery and ended up poor and miserable down the line because none of the things they bought with their money satisfied any lasting spiritual need. Deciding what it is you want to manifest is a complex task, and communicating that to the universe clearly requires you to be in integrity with your true self. The main reason we do not succeed in manifesting our desires is that too often our outer actions don’t really align with who we are inside. As Maureen says, “Remember that having inner rules that don’t agree with your outer ac-

tions is the single most damaging event that can occur inside your personal sphere.” When we call out to our personal genie, we need to know what we want and why. When you get clear on that, the book offers useful ways to narrow it down, and also practical tests to know if we are on the right track. The practices in the book were developed over many years and have been laid out in a very logical sequence, invoking scientific principles of resonance, sacred geometry and quantum theory. If you follow the procedure, as night follows day you should see the results you’re looking for. Come on, rub the lamp – be a Genie! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, not the least being clarity about what it is that you really want in life.

ike and Beth Pasakarnis may have felt welcome at the Soul Life conference they attended in Virginia Beach, but they also felt a bit out of place. It was only six weeks earlier that they heard about the Association for Research and Enlightenment. Attending such an event was the last thing they ever imagined themselves doing. They even admitted as much on camera when medium Maureen Hancock pointed to them in the audience and asked them to stand. The reason for their attendance soon became clear. Maureen told the large crowd that Mike’s son, Michael, who went by the name “Wolf”, came through in a reading she did for him and his wife Beth two years earlier. With Maureen and Dr. Eben Alexander as the draw, Wolf’s father and step-mother had gone to the conference looking for answers about his death. They had no idea that pieces of the puzzle lay embedded in the very grounds upon which they walked that weekend. On the last day of the conference, Mike and Beth had time to kill while waiting for the shuttle to their hotel. They wandered up the hill toward the historic building that once housed Edgar Cayce’s hospital. The stones laid out in a circular maze caught Mike’s eye. Like many of the things to which he’d been exposed that weekend, the concept of a lab-

yrinth was foreign, but the design at the center seemed strangely familiar. As he drew closer, Mike had to look twice to make sure that he was seeing correctly. Incredulous, he turned to his wife and said, “Do you remember this?” Beth recognized the design immediately. The round yin-yang symbol with a dolphin in each half of the circle could have been copied from a drawing that Wolf had designed some ten years before his death. Wolf’s design preceded the construction of the labyrinth. He had drawn it during his “dolphin period,” before he decided that the wolf’s image suited him better. He had no connection with the A.R.E.’s Facilities Support Manager who came up with what she thought was a unique design for the headquarters’ labyrinth. She chose to include the yin-yang symbol for its message of balance and the dolphins for their representation of emotional release. It was Mike and Beth’s need for such release that had brought them to Virginia Beach. Now they couldn’t help but wonder if Wolf had led them there for a reason. The connection between Wolf’s drawing and the labyrinth’s centerpiece served as a signpost that Mike and Beth were on the right path. As they departed the grounds, they had no idea that another vital connection had been made the day before. Mike Pasakarnis seemed somehow different than

METAREALITY the others waiting in line to speak with me after my presentation at the Soul Life conference. He had an air of intensity that silently begged, “Please listen to my story,” while he told me about his son’s passing. In my work as a medium, I talk with many grieving parents. Their stories are all tragic, but as I signed a copy of my memoir for Mike, his words brought my pen to a halt.

ing tour three thousand miles away, I arranged to do the reading by Skype video the following Saturday.

Wolf, I learned, had been struck and killed by lightning. Such a shocking cause of death would get anyone’s attention, but this case hit particularly close to home. Seven years earlier, my step-daughter, Susan, was struck and killed by a bolt out of the blue.

On Thursday morning, I awoke earlier than usual. My mind drifted to thoughts of Mike and Beth’s upcoming reading. Suddenly a wave of energy passed through my body, leaving me momentarily light-headed. I was used to feeling such when the higher vibrations of those on the other side blend with my own. Rather than be concerned, I recognized the sign for what it was: the presence of an unexpected visitor. Somehow, although we had never met, I knew that my early morning visitor was Wolf himself.

“He drew a picture of the exact place where he would be killed,” Mike said, bringing me back to the present. “He even wrote a poem about it. How could that be?” He blurted out the story in rapid-fire, as if afraid I wouldn’t listen or believe him.

I keep a loose-leaf notebook and pen by my pillow for teachings that often come in the night. Something now kept my husband asleep as I rolled onto my side and filled page after page with words and visual imagery that Wolf transmitted to me as fast as I could write them down:

Now, in the silence, his words hung heavily between us. The face of a solemn gray wolf stared back at me from Mike’s t-shirt as I looked him in the eye and replied, “The soul knows.”

- Mentions some sort of necklace … male … amulet, as if he wore a special necklace

I knew this because the spirit of my step-daughter had come to me two days before she was killed. Six-months pregnant at the time of her passing, she walked up to me in a lucid dream and assured me with an angelic smile, “We’re fine. The baby and I are very happy.”

- Not happy in school socially

In the realm of spirit, time does not operate as it does here in the physical realm. Susan’s spirit used a dream to prepare her family for an event that had already happened in its dimension of no-time/no-space. Since her death and the discovery of my ability to communicate with higher consciousness, I have learned much about the nature of the soul. Still, the things I would soon learn from Wolf would take my education to a new level and take his parents on a whirlwind ride they never expected.

- Wanted everyone to love each other … on a large scale – as in humanity … as if he cared deeply for how people treated each other.

In spite of a long waiting list for readings, I felt as if an invisible hand propelled me toward Mike and Beth. “I’d like to give you a reading,” I said after greeting them and giving my condolences. “I don’t know if your son will come through, but I want to try.” I handed them my card and said, “It’s my gift. I hope you’ll contact me.” I was pleased to receive an email from Mike a short while later. Now that I was back on a speak-

(Mike would later confirm that every time he left Wolf after a visit they would flash each other the “I love you” sign). “Do you still want to do the reading?” I asked Wolf silently. In my mind, he had already proven his presence with the quantity of unusual evidence he had provided. - Yes, do the reading anyway so they can ask questions and talk to me. Have Mike and Beth score this, like Gary. This request referred to my work with Dr. Gary Schwartz, Ph.D., a scientist and professor at the University of Arizona who is a noted afterlife re-

METAREALITY searcher. I had been working with Gary for the past year. I appreciated his efforts to validate the evidence that mediums bring through. As a retired Navy Commander, the left-brained side of me is still very strong. Wolf must have known that to get me to trust the new teachings he would share with his parents through me, he needed to establish his presence with the utmost credibility. Later that morning I typed up the eight pages of hand-written notes and emailed them to Mike and Beth. I asked them not to comment on anything specific that might influence the reading the next day. They would later tell me that the evidence left no doubt in their mind that Wolf had visited me. As Wolf requested, Mike and Beth rated each piece of data using Dr. Schwartz’ rigid system. The good professor tallied the scores one week later and reported that it was the most impressive reading of its kind (an unexpected, unrequested visit from a non-physical being) that he had ever seen. It was especially significant considering that the evidence came through with no feedback during its reception. The next day I greeted Mike and Beth’s smiling but anxious faces on my computer screen and the reading began. As I asked for Wolf to join us, an immediate spike in energy left me stunned and stuttering. Only later would I learn that Maureen Hancock reported the same sense: that Wolf’s soul carried the highest energy either of us had ever experienced in a reading. Wolf quickly established his presence with the kind of verifiable evidence I always request from spirit in a reading. The things he shared about his life which I could not have possibly known fulfilled the purpose of the session: to show that consciousness continues after death and that the soul is eternal.

45 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

The evidential data from Wolf that Mike and Beth validated allowed us to fully trust the messages that could not be proven. The energy and emotion which accompanied those messages left me fighting the urge to cry as I repeated Wolf’s words verbatim to Mike: “I had to go, Dad. I had to go, and I had to go like that.” (With the lightning strike) “Why?” Mike asked plaintively, talking directly to his son. Wolf explained that just like my step-daughter, “We fulfilled our mission.” He went on to say, “There’s more work to be done, and now I am higher than normal in this new world”—a fact supported by my continued stuttering from his high energy—“and I am helping those who passed who also could not relate at the physical level.” He explained that because he had experienced life with those who were troubled, he is better able to assist the young ones who pass, especially those who take their own lives. “Can’t you see I was different?” Wolf said, and then he put a word in my head that I did not expect to hear: “schizophrenia.” “He was diagnosed schizophrenic,” Beth confirmed. Wolf then explained that during his 29 years on this earth plane he had one foot in both worlds at all times. He shared that he was unable to shut out the inputs from the non-physical dimension. “It was very busy in here,” he reported, pointing at his head. “He always said that,” Mike replied. I tried to reconcile a young man labeled as mentally ill with the incredibly powerful presence I was experiencing. “Look how I passed,” Wolf said. “It was not

METAREALITY an accident. There is a baseline of behavior in your world that is considered normal, and you can see how I was in both worlds and unable to function on the normal baseline.” Wolf summarized this most important message with the most meaningful words of all: “… but there was nothing wrong with my heart.” With the reading concluded, I allowed Mike to fill me in on the details of Wolf’s passing. What he shared with me left no doubt that Wolf had been aware of his impending death. He not only knew how, where, and when he would die, but he predicted details of specific events that would happen in the aftermath of his transition. Any medium who wishes to avoid the criticism of skeptics will wisely shy away from using a word such as “proof” when referring to information gained at the level of the soul. The prophetic poem that Wolf penned before he passed and the picture he drew to back up his words go beyond the mere preponderance of evidence that a good medium strives for. They constitute profound proof that the soul has access to information far beyond that of the human mind. Yes, the soul knows. At a level we can’t perceive, it knows when its time here is finished. It knows why it has come, and it knows what life is about. In spite of the tortured voices in his head, Wolf’s soul shined through in his short time in a physical body, allowing him to share kindness and compassion greater than most people who live a much longer life. The day after Wolf’s reading, I again sensed his presence. He flashed before my eyes the face of a wolf that covered my full field of vision. I had forgotten that I had seen a similar vision during meditation several months earlier. At the time, I had no idea why the wolf had come to me. I went online and researched the wolf as a sacred symbol. Having now met Wolf Pasakarnis at a soul level, I realized that he had chosen the perfect symbol for his life on earth: “Wolves are highly misunderstood animals. In reality wolves are friendly and social creatures with a strong sense of family. Aggression is something they avoid. Wolves represent the spirit of freedom. Because the wolf is a teacher and pathfinder, he comes when we need guidance in our lives.” 1 1 http://www.animaltotem.com/wolf.html

46 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

Because of the accuracy of the information that came through in both of his visits, we puzzled over a short list of words and messages which seemed to make no sense. Had his reading been a onetime glimpse across the veil, we might still be pondering the significance of those confounding clues. Instead, Wolf repeatedly made his presence known to me over the following months. Through a series of striking synchronicities, Wolf helped me unravel what turned out to be an intricate web that he wove during his two initial visits. The result is a profound lesson in how to find peace and balance in a world that is precariously out of alignment. Mike and Beth allowed me to share those lessons in Wolf’s Message, a booklength tribute to Wolf and his tenacity in making his presence known from the other side. I had no idea when I agreed to speak at the Soul Life conference how much a young man named Wolf would teach me and his parents about our lives as souls. Wolf went out in a flash of light so that people would pay attention. The refined vibration I felt from his spirit belied the oft-troubled young man known to his family. I have come to understand that the challenges he faced in human form were part of a greater plan. Had he lived a normal life, few would be inclined to pay attention to his message. It is the jaw-dropping circumstances surrounding his death that make Wolf’s message impossible to ignore. The wolf comes when we most need guidance in our lives. He is a teacher and a pathfinder. Wolf Pasakarnis came to bring greater awareness of our dual nature and to lead us back to the source of our own inner beauty: the heart. He came to show us how to go Home.

METAREALITY THE

MULTIDIMENSIONAL Traveler By Khartika Goe

O

OFTEN, AFTER WAKING UP FROM A NIGHT OF TRAVELING, I FIND MYSELF IMMERSED IN THOUGHTS OF WHY MOST PEOPLE TEND TO FEAR THE UNKNOWN AND CHOOSE TO LIVE IN OBLIVION. PERHAPS IGNORANCE IS INDEED BLISS. BUT WHAT IS BLISS IF IT DEPRIVES US OF THE TRUTH OF OUR POTENTIAL?

ur lives attain structure from phenomena that we are able to explain and see in the physical body; and it is through fragments of human creation, such as the concept of time, that we have come to construe what is possible and what is impossible, and likewise- what characterizes the truth and what is deemed as ‘absurdity.’

Nevertheless, constantly questioning our existence on this planet we call home undoubtedly remains part of human nature. Karma, reincarnation, and the human life cycle are all concepts that many individuals spend countless hours of their lives on Earth curiously pondering over. But, as residents of this planet, we often find our thoughts and attempts at forming an understanding scathed by the limits of our physicality. Distracted and misled

48 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

by the hustle and bustle of the everyday physical life, our true essence- that of the energetic- is placed aside to be boxed, meticulously taped shut, and then left neglected in a dusty, unkempt corner within a forgotten abyss of our mind.

However, our mind, like our soul, is indestructible, incomprehensible and incalculable. However, within it our energetic potential lies. Governed by our thoughts and the mind’s alignment with the heart, a successful elevation of our vibrational frequencies can occur—the cornerstone of attaining multidimensional travels to the higher dimensions of love and light. The undeniable truth is that we are all energetic beings composed of energies, rhythms and vibrations, living in an energetic world. It is not until we learn to cast aside our physical encasements that

METAREALITY we will begin to discover the true knowledge behind the seeming “mysteries” of the universe. Scientists of planet Earth have made incredible strides in the study of the mind; however, they have seemingly failed to convey to people all of what they would be capable of achieving by simply learning to expand their consciousness. While the unconscious constitutes the majority of the mind, it leaves only a meager percentage to the consciousness, making the realization of our energetic abilities and the recollection of our multidimensional experiences even more of a challenge. With this knowledge, it is vital that individuals learn how to maintain control of their thoughts, as well as bolster their level of consciousness so that they can travel energetically in full awareness. Mainstream thought has long regarded what is known as the dream state to be the unconscious. This assumption, however, is greatly falsified. Many of us have indeed found ourselves able to sense feelings or emotions (both those of the positive nature as well as those of the negative) upon waking up from our sleep, and this argument alone contradicts the basic assumption that humans remain entirely unconscious during the state of sleep. How are some people able to retain fragments of their dreams if they have remained entirely unconscious during this dream state? These faulty allegations, unless dismissed, constitute an unfortunate burden on the true meaning of being able to freely travel multidimensionally- the ability to remember one’s travels and remain entirely conscious while doing so. The will of the mind, much like the steering wheel of a car, provides us with the ability to focus on reaching any destination of a desired course of action

in our travels, regardless what the circumstances may be. The force of will, a force that can be resonated throughout your entire being while skillfully remaining undetected by the physical senses, reconnects our thought waves with the energetic components that vibrate throughout this universe. This force of will, much like the oxygen humans breathe, is a force that is readily available for anyone’s use as long as they remain entirely focused on their intentions to do so. When we wish to travel multidimensionally and to remain conscious while doing so, it is important that we acknowledge the availability of such a force and use it to fuel our intentions towards being able to consciously remember every detail of our travels. Although this concept may seem difficult to understand at this moment, you will come to recognize it after you have fully acknowledged its existence and eventually be able to utilize it to manifest the outcome you desire in any situation of your own life. There exist many universes, galaxies, and planets that have yet to be discovered and explored; and through discipline and practice, each and every one of us can regain the ability to travel energetically wherever we choose to visit. The ability to travel multidimensionally to the vast dimensional existences through the usage of the energetic body is by no means one that is marked by exclusivityit is universal amongst all beings and transgresses across all boundaries of age, culture, location, and education. ©2015 Khartika Goe, author of The Multidimensional Traveler published by New Page Books a division of Career Press, Pompton Plains, NJ. Most of us no doubt are familiar with the expression, “Life is what you make of it.” It’s an adage that offers comfort in the face of disappointment and inspiration when undertaking new endeavors. STUDENTS OF THE ANCIENT ESOTERIC PRACTICE OF ALCHEMY, FOR EXAMPLE, WILL READILY RECOGNIZE THE UNDERLYING SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THAT DISCIPLINE AND THIS ONE. LIKEWISE, FOLLOWERS OF THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, THE PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT CONCEPT POPULARIZED THROUGH THE IMMENSELY SUCCESSFUL BOOK AND DVD “THE SECRET” (2006), WILL SEE CONSCIOUS CREATION’S UNCANNY RESEMBLANCE TO THAT PRACTICE. BUT, NO MATTER WHAT ONE CALLS IT OR HOW ONE USES IT, THE PROCESS ULTIMATELY YIELDS THE SAME RESULT, NAMELY, THAT THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS. A number of important principles provide the foundation for this practice, and many excellent references about them are available. They are perhaps best covered in the writings of author Jane Roberts, who, together with her noncorporeal channeled entity, Seth, produced volume upon volume of material on the subject. But, as eloquently as these concepts are presented in prose, they are also brilliantly portrayed through an entirely different medium—the movies. In many respects, movies are essentially the modern-day equivalent of storytelling, the time-honored practice long used for instructing students in various philosophical, spiritual and metaphysical traditions. But, because motion pictures enhance their storylines with the high-tech wizardry of striking visuals and stateof-the-art sound, they bring their messages to life in ways mere words often can’t. Their mes-

sages carry enormous impact, evoking strongly felt responses and conveying their messages with palpable degrees of substance and meaning. This is particularly true when it comes to cinematic portrayals of conscious creation principles; they jump off the screen at us with the vigor of the great white star of “Jaws.” As a lifelong movie lover, I’ve found that films of all genres are capable of accomplishing this, too, including everything from comedies to dramas to science fiction and even documentaries. In fact, over time, I’ve discovered that movies can be organized into a sort of road map or outline for explaining the key concepts of conscious creation, the approach I used in my books, Consciously Created Cinema: The Movie Lover’s Guide to the Law of Attraction (2014) and Get the Picture: Conscious Creation Goes to the Movies (2007). Many fundamental conscious creation concepts may seem like practical, commonsense guidance, and that’s true, to be sure. But, when the principles are viewed collectively (with the concepts building upon one another) and applied with a heightened sense of awareness (a truly “conscious” outlook), they work synergistically to provide a powerful means for approaching life. They generate a heightened sense of self-empowerment and self-awareness to help us shape our existence more to our liking. They enable us to address life’s opportunities, and to confront its challenges, more effectively and with a greater sense of fulfillment. Here’s a look at some of those concepts and films that exemplify them:

In many respects, movies are essentially the modern-day equivalent of storytelling, the time-honored practice long used for instructing students in various philosophical, spiritual and metaphysical traditions.

CONSCIOUS CINEMA 1. BECOMING AWARE OF HOW WE FORMULATE BELIEFS. Since beliefs are the starting point in conscious creation, it’s important to know how they form in the first place. This involves becoming aware of the roles that our intellect and intuition play in this process. They provide the input that our consciousness evaluates and then uses to shape the beliefs we hold based on such assessments. Awareness of this overall process, as well as the individual beliefs formed through it, are crucial for improving the proficiency of our conscious creation practice. Movies that show this include the romantic comedy “Under the Tuscan Sun” (2003), the ballet world drama “The Turning Point” (1977), the quirky comedy-drama “Greenberg” (2010) and the engaging metaphysical documentary “The Quantum Activist” (2009).

cluding the aforementioned DVD “The Secret” (2006), the eclectic conscious creation treatise “What the #$*! Do We (K)now!?” (2004), the engaging sci-fi drama “Contact” (1997) and the metaphysical talkfest “Mindwalk” (1991).

2. GOING BEYOND SURFACE PERCEPTIONS. Because we tend to put more reliance on intellect than on intuition, we also tend to put a lot of stock into surface perceptions, those we perceive with our five outer senses. But sometimes these impressions don’t tell the whole story. Looking beneath the surface provides a fuller picture, helping us to see that things aren’t always what they seem. It also helps us sharpen our intuitive sense, as noted above a key element in belief formation. These ideas are explored eloquently in the gripping psychological drama “Ordinary People” (1980), the French farce “King of Hearts” (1966), the riveting character study “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), the biting satire “Wag the Dog” (1997), the heartfelt father-and-son drama “Big Fish” (2003) and the gripping church-based drama “Doubt” (2008). 3. UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP OF SCIENCE AND SPIRIT IN OUR LIVES. In many ways, the harmony between these two forces is a metaphor for the relationship between our intellect and intuition. Grasping the one aids comprehension of the other, and a number of pictures illustrate that notion, in-

4. DRAWING UPON THE POWER OF CHOICE AND FREE WILL. If we each create our own reality, then it would stand to reason that we also must be the ones making the decisions about how that reality materializes. This is where the power of choice and free will comes into play. Surprisingly, however, it’s a power we often lose sight of. Maintaining an acute awareness of it is critical to formulating beliefs that allow us to create the existence we want, no matter how outlandish or unusual those choices may seem. Examples of pictures that illustrate this are the gut-wrenching drama “Sophie’s Choice” (1982), the edgy dark comedy “After Hours” (1985), the unconventional family drama “Housekeeping” (1987), the futurist yarn “Brave New World” (1998) and the road trip tale “Away We Go” (2009).

CONSCIOUS CINEMA 5. MAKING CHANGES WHEN NEEDED. When our beliefs don’t pan out as we’d like, it’s time to choose new ones. Being willing to evaluate our choices and make changes to them (by rewriting the beliefs that underlie them) is essential for achieving results more to our liking. Of course, we have to follow through on those changes in our choices to see them bear fruit; otherwise, we’re likely to remain locked in place, unsatisfied with our creations. Films that address such questions include the offbeat drama “The Truman Show” (1998), the gender-bending comedies “All of Me” (1984) and “Switch” (1991), the romantic fantasy “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986), the quirky Woody Allen comedies “Zelig” (1983) and “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985), the never-ending saga of “Groundhog Day” (1993) and the heartwarming odyssey of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2012). 6. FACING FEARS AND LIVING HEROICALLY. This is precisely what’s called for when making changes in our beliefs and in our lives. Without the courage to do this, we really will stay stuck in place. Many movies delve into this subject beautifully, but some of my favorites are the soul-searching sci-fi drama “Signs” (2002), the courageous leap of faith character study “An Unmarried Woman” (1978), the Alfred Hitchcock classic “Vertigo” (1958), the otherworldly romantic comedy “Defending Your Life” (1991), the charming and inspiring biopic “The King’s Speech” (2010), and a trio of contemporary heroic tales (all from 2005), “The Constant Gardener,” “Syriana” and “Good Night, and Good Luck.” 7. ASSESSING THE EVOLUTION OF OUR BELIEFS. Looking at how our beliefs change over time gives us a sense of how far we’ve come in achieving a particular goal. By taking stock of our beliefs in this way, we can see where further changes may be needed as well. Films in the road trip genre are especially effective at this, and some great examples include the cinemat-

ic classic “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), the screwball comedy “Flirting with Disaster” (1996), the action adventure “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989), the Frank Capra fantasy “Lost Horizon” (1937) and the eccentric father-andson comedy “Nebraska” (2013). 8. APPRECIATING THE CONNECTEDNESS OF ALL THINGS. If we each truly create our own reality, then we indeed create the totality of that reality, including all its component parts. When we consider how intricately all of the elements of our existence are interwoven, it becomes clear how careful we must be when making choices, formulating beliefs and effecting changes to them, for the implications can be far-reaching and unexpected. A number of movies explore this idea well, including the ironically titled “Six Degrees of Separation” (1993), the dysfunctional character study “American Beauty” (1999), the engaging gay drama “Hard Pill” (2005), the angst-ridden L.A. sagas “Grand Canyon” (1991) and “Crash”

CONSCIOUS CINEMA (2005), the heartwarming tale “Pay It Forward” (2000), the sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” (2009) and the multifaceted reincarnational saga “Cloud Atlas” (2012). 9. EXCEEDING OUR PERSONAL LIMITATIONS. A chief aim of conscious creation is to create the reality we desire, something frequently achieved through spurts in our personal growth. Such advances can be realized by thinking the unthinkable, envisioning possibilities never before dreamed of and imbuing ourselves with skills we never knew we had or thought possible. Also, it can involve allowing ourselves to wander the uncharted territories of alternate states of consciousness, such as those experienced in dreams and other unconventional states of mind. Imagine what’s possible with outlooks like that! Sci-fi and fantasy films are especially good at helping us see such possibilities, because they inherently push limits as part of their storylines. Some great examples are “What Dreams May Come” (1998), “Phenomenon” (1996), “Resur-

rection” (theatrical version, 1980; made-for-TV version, 1999), “K-PAX” (2001), “The Lathe of Heaven” (1980), “Brainstorm” (1983), “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004), “Pleasantville” (1998) and “Midnight in Paris” (2011). 10. EXPERIENCING THE JOY AND POWER OF CREATION. As self-evident as this may seem, becoming more conscious of this state of being is tremendously uplifting. It allows us to experience being our own best selves, living up to our potential for the betterment of our own lives and those of others, a concept sometimes referred to as “value fulfillment.” It begs the question, “Who wouldn’t want to live a life like that?” We can see such sublime joy and tremendous power made manifest through such pictures as the gentle comedy “Being There” (1979), the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), the inspiring, high-flying historical adventure “The Right Stuff” (1983), the dreamy fantasy world of “Wings of Desire” (1987) and the heartwarming sports drama “The Blind Side” (2009). In future posts, I’ll examine the foregoing principles and other related concepts in greater detail, citing films that illustrate those notions effectively. But, in the meantime, consider what’s possible when these steps are put together, not only for achieving the existence you want, but also for bettering our world. The satisfaction and rewards of such a life are truly worth experiencing. And to think it can all stem from the inspiration that the movies provide. Now that’s quite a creation, if I do say so myself. Copyright © 2014, by Brent Marchant. All rights reserved.

The Conscious Activist: Where Activism Meets Mysticism by James O’Dea EVERY SO OFTEN A BOOK COMES ALONG THAT YOU FEEL IS JUST SO RIGHT FOR THE TIMES; SUCH A BOOK IS THE CONSCIOUS ACTIVIST.

A

t a time when acts of violence of unspeakable brutality seem to be proliferating, not only in distant war-torn lands, but even in our usually peaceful communities, we are at a loss to make sense of them – much less to know how to stop them. As a front-line activist and head of the Washington office of Amnesty International, James has both seen the lowest expressions of human viciousness and the most elevated expressions of human forgiveness and compassion. But no one can sustain a steady diet of brutality without deep reserves of spiritual connection. This is what he discovered when he hit the wall and burnt out. The turning point for O’Dea came with the murder of a 12-year-old Pakistani boy who had been chained to a carpet making loom at the age of four, escaped at age 8, and then turned activist and inspired people around the world to defend the rights of children. The healing for him came through study and encounters with amazing spiritual teachers, as well as through his teaching and work for global peace. He realized that an activist needs vision, a sense of hope and possibility, as well as what he calls equipoise, balancing action with compassion and connecting instinct to a higher source that will be a rudder in navigating complexity. Equally, it is not enough for the mystic to bliss out in the tran-

scendent realms. As the Dalai Lama said, “it is not enough to be compassionate – one must act.” He points out that it will take more than activism to change the world; it will take a total shift in consciousness as well as a new integration of spirit and action. The way to that shift, he suggests, is by acknowledging our connection to each other and learning to access the field of universal consciousness of which we are a part. What used to be the realm of the scientist is now the realm of the activist and mystic as well. We are in an intense evolutionary phase, he says, shedding old hierarchical identities and evolving toward a larger shared human identity, but “now we have a map: we are connected to the radiance of the underlying source of all existence, and invited to reflect it into a world that gets dazzled and distracted by its own shallow glitter.” A profound book with a vitally important message. The Turning Point: Creating Resilience in a Time of Extremes By Gregg Braden

T

his is a cry from the heart from a scientist who has his feet firmly planted on the ground and his spiritual roots drawing from the wisdom of the ages.

Long known as a teacher of ancient wisdom made relevant for the modern world, Greg looks at our present society in the context of both the degradation we are inflicting on our environment and the almost limitless capacity we have for inventive solutions to the thorniest questions facing us today. Greg’s voice is a refreshing call for honesty in dealing with the problems facing humanity – an honesty that is submerged by the voices of self interest, nationalism, and political correctness, as well as the voices of conspiracy theorists and political journalists who may be using fear - each for their own ends.

He traces the root of our difficulties in dealing with our problems to the hierarchy of thinking inherited from our past, particularly thinking based in the false assumptions of science. These assumptions suggest that we can solve all our problems through competition, force, and conflict. Throw enough money at a problem, and industry will come up with a technological fix for whatever might ail us – in medicine, energy, in agriculture, and so on. The thinking that he proposes instead is based in cooperation, understanding and mutual aid. It is only through acknowledging our mutual interdependence – across the planet – that we will marshal the best minds and creativity available, combining them to bring forth the solutions that will pull us back from the brink of disaster, towards which we are wrongheadedly advancing.

The good news is that there is no shortage of solutions. These solutions are based in the notion of resilience. Resilience is something that used to be built into heavy machinery or electronics to provide redundancy for failure. It was a way to ensure that if one system failed another one would take up the slack. Our global systems are teetering on the brink as are our resources. We do have solutions available both in the short-term and the longterm. The short-term fixes are primarily to buy us time for the long-term solutions. The good news is there that there are many individuals and organizations who have been working with this mindset and making impressive advances. It is most encouraging to read about them, and it is hoped that they will that their example will lead the way to more and more creative innovators. There will probably never be a consensus as to what a better world will look like. As Greg points out, there will probably be as many opinions as there are people. The thing is, that it is in the collective that the pieces of the puzzle come together – that the contributions of the individual elements will make a greater, more coherent and sustainable whole. This is a call to action, and make no mistake about it – it is a call that needs to be heeded. Reviewed by Miriam Knight

A Call to More Democratic Higher Education Emphasizing Thinking

H

igher education is urgently in need of reform, ex-Yale-professor Deresiewicz explains in EXCELLENT SHEEP. America’s elite universities, including Yale, Harvard, and Stanford, are no longer the places of inner transformation they once used to be, but instead have become primarily concerned with their school rankings in US News & World Report. Now that universities are as concerned with their ranking as college-bound students have been with SAT scores, rather unfortunate trends toward grade-inflation, and admissions rejection inflation have become the norm. What Deresiewicz points out with clarity and wit is the growing gulf between student needs for genuine growth and discovery and the kind of factory processing that now occurs. A large number of elite university students, graduates, professors and administrative staff mock those who express interest in pursuing something other than the four areas of power majors comprising the majority of elite university courses of: Finance, Consulting, Medicine, and Law. Students at elite universities are so accustomed to running on an academic treadmill prior to university in order to attain the stratospheric GPAs and extra-curriculars required that they continue mindless momentum through college, often missing out on exploring opportunities to richly and deeply explore who they truly are. Deresiewicz suggests that we, collectively as a society, embrace the concept of the

Academy as a learning institution dedicated to educate, inspire, and transform, free from the grips of corporatocracy. The specific details are left to readers to decide, as EXCELLENT SHEEP is written as a discussion piece designed to inspire conversations, rather than a cure for one or two specific problems. It seems clear that the problems illustrated in this book have more than one unique cause, such that the surrounding conditions must also be considered when contemplating a cure. I love Deresiewicz’s passion and prose in EXCELLENT SHEEP, as well as the way he sounds a clarion call for institutions of true teaching and learning, in which thinking is respected, encouraged, and appreciated in instructors, students, and administrative staff. I recommend EXCELLENT SHEEP for students and parents investigating higher education options, as well as for teachers and academic administrators interested in improving the system of higher education. MINDFULNESS

The New Paradigm in Corporate Culture? The Mindful Leadership Summit, Washington, DC By Ken Reed, Author/Mindfulness Teacher Somewhere towards November 2014, we received an email notice announcing the first Mindful Leadership Summit to be held in the DC area. Over the next weeks, I visited the site several times trying to look deeper into what it was all about: its mission, goals and who would be presenting. The site announced that more than 500 leaders from 37 countries would be present. Quite honestly, for the most part I did not recognize the vast array of 25 presenters, their backgrounds and books.

H

aving been exposed to many Eastern and Western traditions over 45 years and as a former monk and practitioner, I knew the various lineages, the masters, Gurus, and current teachers teaching some form of mindfulness and meditation toward self-discovery and liberation. Clearly, almost none of these presenters were on the roster or circuits I was aware of. Over my years as an instructor and meditation guide to many, through my retreats, events and tours, and sharing my books, I was not familiar with what I will call another whole development in the spread of the dharma. These were the guys in suits, “The Suits. I dug deeper to see what had been the sources of their inspiration, their training to be able to bring this ancient practice of mindfulness to a world class summit for leaders, leaders who were now taking the ancient instructions into the Fortune 500 arena, government, non-profits, healthcare, and international relations. I was aware of the recent scientific examinations in labs where brain science experts charted the outcomes of mindfulness and meditation on the pre-frontal cortex and how it affected the amygdala in stimulating compassion and empathetic sen-

sitivities. Further, I was aware of the notable claims by sports teams, performers and corporate management here and there employing mindfulness as an overall strategy in the workplace. I was curious and decided to attend the summit, participate and learn more about this groundbreaking movement. I had a lot of questions. How is mindfulness being presented to those whom may have no prior interest, training or background? How are, or will they be proposing the use, measurement and effectiveness to orgs that we usual-

ly considered to be bottom-line profit driven. And further, had the corporate executive world come to meditation or had practitioners outside the corporate world now penetrated the suits with demonstrated bottom-line value? So I went. I participated. I focused with intensity. And as the summit concluded on Saturday after two days, I reflected on what had taken place and I would like to share a few thoughts…Thoughts? Oh no! Not thoughts. Let’s call them impressions. This was not a dry, academic or intellectual banter gathering. It was heartfelt and I had to chuckle at times as I witnessed the suits, hugging each other. The sessions were robust and well presented by the likes of Mark Tercek, CEO of The Nature Conservancy, Rich Fernandez, Co-Founder of Wisdom Labs and former Director of Executive Development at Google, Congressman, Tim Ryan and more. In the breaks and lunch period I mingled and met so many leaders and learned that they were from diverse backgrounds. I met people from the FBI, State Department, World Bank, and the fields of psychology, healthcare and education, and also those whose only credential was that they sit in silence practicing mindfulness. One question that arose often in my conversations with long time practitioners was whether the

These days there is a high-visibility of an industry that has grown around body, mind and spirit awareness. Yoga studios have appeared in every city. Fitness studios, hotels and spas offer it with exercise; cruise lines have classes, and even one airport I passed through recently had a time out room for sitting. There are 200-hour teacher training events offered with certification. Was, and is this the yoga of the masters, Patanjali, the mindfulness taught by the Buddha, or is this just part of the evolution of consciousness raising predicted by the likes of Paramahansa Yogananda and earlier Eastern teachers visiting the West many years ago? What difference does it make? Who is to say how this consciousness revolution is evolving or the form in which it will manifest? This was the question we posed to ourselves. As those of us in attendance departed from the Artisphere convention center where all had taken place, I knew many had the same question. I knew as I said good-bye with a big hug to the founders of The Mindful Leadership Summit, Mo Edjlali and Eric Forbis, that we would return again next year to meet and to reveal the effects of a most powerful experience. Thank you to all who had the vision to make this possible. Ken Reed’s career spanned many facets and roles as a filmmaker, war-zone journalist, explorer, spiritual seeker, world-traveler. After sitting at the feet of yoga masters and meditation teachers as a monk and participating in many human potential workshops and retreats, it took Ken Reed more than 40 years in what he refers to as the “proving grounds” to live the essence of those teachings. 2015: Into the EMERGING CULTURE By Ruth L Miller, Ph.D.

Do the breakdowns of 2012-14 have you wondering what’s happening to us? What’s next? Have we reached our limits? What can you DO?

F

or half a century, futurists have been projecting the potential breakdown of what most Americans have thought of as “normal” ways of living on this planet. And for several centuries before, prophets from other cultures have let us know that what to us is normal is not sustainable for the long haul. Futurists have been saying that population pressure, resource limitations, and pollution would reach critical levels in the first half of the 21st century, which could lead to great distress around the world if alternatives are not put in place. Technologists have offered many of those alternatives, but sociopolitical processes have prevented them from being implemented on a sufficient scale, so many of the futurists’ distressing projections have begun to come into our experience. Prophets have taken a different view. By and large, they’ve said that we’re coming to the end of a stage in a long cycle of human and natural processes, and that a new way of living will naturally emerge as those who remain move into the next stage – often called a World.

64 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

Both groups have offered options. Both groups have said that if we stop doing what we have been doing the way we’ve been doing it and start paying attention to the ecological and spiritual bases and consequences of our actions, this transition can be relatively smooth and easy. But we haven’t. As a nation, and as a global industrial culture, we’ve continued to operate on a set of ideas, beliefs, and assumptions that place humanity in conflict with natural processes, seeking to exploit the resources this planet offers us for the enrichment of a few people who then provide the masses with something to entertain them while their health, and that of the planet, our home, suffers. So where are we today? What can we learn from futurists and prophets that we can use to weather the transition they’ve been telling us about? Is it possible that what we’re transitioning to could be even better than how we’ve been living up to now?

OUR WORLD UNDERSTANDING WHAT’S HAPPENING When I was studying anthropology, I learned that human beings live and work together in remarkably similar ways, with a wide variety of local variations within those similarities. We learned systems to track both the similarities and the differences. Then, when I worked as a futurist, my job was to track trends, identify potential “wild cards” that would radically affect those trends, and discover new possibilities as they emerged. To do so I scanned dozens of magazines and journals each week, watched a wide variety of media, attended conferences, listened in on casual conversations wherever people around me were talking, and kept a huge database of indicators of change. I could do so because I had a framework for thinking about all these different kinds of information, a way of dividing up our culture that made sense to me and helped be to track not only individual events, but relationships.

65 | NEW CONSCIOUSNESS REVIEW

The essence of the framework that I, and many other futurists, use is based on the concept that any culture may be divided into half a dozen categories of structures and activities: • SOCIAL SYSTEMS – institutions, organizations, and activities that provide support for the raising of children, which is the primary purpose for all human society • TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEMS – the tools and techniques that are used to generate all of the things needed to maintain the social systems • ECONOMIC SYSTEMS – the means by which goods and services are produced and distributed • ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES – the natural processes and resources that affect the culture • POLITICAL SYSTEMS – the structures and processes by which collective decisions are made • VALUE SYSTEMS – the set of assumptions, beliefs, expectations, and ideals on which individual and collective decisions are made

OUR WORLD The American Dream has been lost, with its assumption of independent production on one’s own land ... That’s it. Simple. Effective. While there are as many ways to use this structure as there are futurists and anthropologists, when we put these together, we have a pretty complete idea of what’s been happening and what’s emerging. And much of what can be said about what’s going on in our world today can be described and dealt with in these terms. For example, describing one set of trends and indicators within this system gives us the following image of the US: • Our social systems are breaking down. From religious organization through schools, businesses, service clubs, and government agencies, they’re over institutionalized and administratively heavy, and many no longer serve the primary purpose for which they were created; • Our technological systems are not keeping up with the innovations occurring in the technological sector, in large part due to the breakdown of the social systems. Many technological solutions to large scale problems are not being implemented; others are being implemented without adequate assurances of safety for the affected population; still others are transforming the way social systems function more rapidly than the heavily institutionalized structures can shift. • Our economic systems have become extremely inefficient. Our debt-based economy, the first in the history of humanity, produces and moves the fewest goods and services for the most resources and effort ever known, even as the technology being developed increases productivity immensely. • Our impacts on the natural environment are huge – and often horrifying. Huge deserts are being formed around the world, vast stretches of the ocean are “dead zones”, forests are disappearing, and fertile farmlands are being transformed into vast expanses of concrete and

asphalt. And Nature is responding in kind, with more intense storms, shifting climates, and devastating earthquakes. • The US federal government is at a virtual standstill, with Congress having too many members to agree on anything and its leaders fighting along party lines that have been defined by outside interest groups. Local governments are limited by their dependence on federal funds and the regulations that go with them. Instant communication and constant televising of carefully selected issues and sound bites make the electorate feel involved while being kept almost totally uninformed about what is being said and done by the representatives they’ve elected. • There have always been multiple values sets in the US but in recent years they’ve become increasingly polarized, with the “other” being more and more demonized. The American Dream has been lost, with its assumption of independent production on one’s own land and minimal consumption and dependence on others, household-by-household. This assessment is a snapshot. Looking at the relationships between these sectors over time is the basis for generating scenarios for the future.

PROJECTING POSSIBILITIES For several decades, a common practice has been to project the trends in these areas to describe three extreme possible descriptions and suggest that the actual future will lie somewhere between them. The usual set includes:

OUR WORLD • Techno-Success, “the official future” – this is the one that says we’ll have high tech solutions for all our problems, “smart” homes that we can run from our smart phones, as we cruise down computer-managed highways in self-driving cars, using power generated by fuel cells and other innovative technologies, with nano-robots monitoring our bodies and maintaining healthy levels of chemicals throughout, and so forth. • Eco-Distress, the “collapse future” – this scenario says that some environmental disaster leads to such extreme disruptions in the economy that the current political systems can’t hold it together and local regions are left to cope as they can to provide their own food and shelter needs. • Transformation, the “turnaround, green” future – this assumes that the majority of people across Western culture begin to see how their actions affect their environment and so establish new kinds of systems for producing food, clothing, and shelter, as well as generating the power needed to be comfortable. What’s most likely to happen in any one place is some combination of these – and each of them is happening (or beginning to happen) somewhere in the world, now. So it’s been a very effective framework for futurists and planners, helping us to understand what’s going on now and what a community or nation may be facing in the years ahead.

THE METAPHYSICAL FACTOR Nowadays, though, there’s a new kind of understanding to include in this framework. It’s something that spiritual teachers and shamans have known for thousands of years, but that we in Western Industrial Culture have totally forgotten – until the past couple of decades. Today, there’s more and more research supporting the idea that what people think is as important as what they say and do – affecting their own bodies, the bodies of those around them, the groups and organizations they participate in, and the ecological systems in which they live. I’m calling this the “Metaphysical Factor.” When we consider the consciousness – the values, attitudes, beliefs, memories, assumptions, and expectations – of the members of a given region

We need to become conscious co-creators of a new kind of culture. or community in our analysis, a number of things that once were confusing begin to make sense. To give some historical examples, why is it that some communities weathered the Great Depression with almost no effects while others, with basically the same socio-political-economic structures, wallowed in horrible distress? Why is it that some regions remain lush and productive while others, with much the same geological and climatic characteristics, suffer from drought, flood, and fire? Why is it that more soldiers from some communities returned from the wars than from others? Why do some hunting groups find game and others, in the same territory, do not? How is it that one man – a Franklin, a Gandhi, or a King – can completely transform the way a nation operates in a few years. And so forth. Clearly, if we are to live comfortably on this planet for generations to come, we need to begin to take into account all of these factors in all of our decisions. We need to learn to recognize the indicators and act in ways that are harmonious with both human and planetary well-being. We need to become conscious co-creators of a new kind of culture.
