The 10 Sustain-Abilit

Vitality for Life’s Voyage

In today’s changing, competitive, speeding, digital world, it can feel like a challenge to succeed and keep succeeding. To have 21st century success, you need what I call “sustainabilities.” These personal abilities are universal and inherent within each of us, and they have little to do with experience or IQ. I’ve worked for myself during my entire professional life in an esoteric field renowned for “poverty consciousness.” I have succeeded and continue to succeed by developing personal “ sustain-abilities” with the power of “re”: re-newing, re-starting, and reinventing. Here are 10 imperative sustain-abilities from my personal experience in making it—and remaking it.

It’s All About You he primary indispensable sustain-ability is YOU! It’s often said that “success is an inside job.” It’s true. But too often we fail to look at ourselves and instead look to outside forces for secrets of success and answers to our problems.

T

We all want to find the latest, greatest, sure-fire technique for succeeding, but ultimately success is about what is within us. In short, people rule, not processes or the economy, so look to yourself and develop personal sustainabilities to navigate your business and your life.

he bottom line of the “business of you” is energy. With energy, anything is possible. Energy is not just physical. It’s a combustive alchemy of forces coming together to ignite and keep reigniting. This is “synergy,” from the Latin “sun ergos,” or sun energy. The sun keeps shining because it constantly re-fires itself.

T

Synergize!

Be your own sun and synergize yourself in a holistic way. How? Turn on mentally by following what stimulates your mind. Turn on emotionally by doing what pulses your heart. Turn on spiritually by knowing your own path and purpose for shining your light. Turn on physically by joyfully moving your body. Mix and balance the

natural principles of active, male, spring-like, projective energy with receptive, feminine, inward, winter contraction for an alchemical blend of hot and cold, fire and water to create and recreate. By activating all these diverse parts of yourself, you have synergy; ignore them and you have “unergy,” an exponential decrease of power that brings on depletion and burnout. Periodically get away from your business. Enjoy life. Sleep in and sleep well. Diversify. Deconstruct occasionally and “shake out the crazies!” Wiggle and jiggle, shake and bake, sound and scream. A little madness prevents the big madness. It’s an essential recess that takes you into re-set for a re-start.

The Heart of Motivation

What puts us in motion and keeps us in motion is emotion! To move and keep moving, we must be moved. Thinking is mostly over-rated. Feel it and do it. Learn to surf the waves on the ocean of emotion and be naturally and effortlessly powered. ost importantly, find your wave and ride it. Do what you love. As the savant Gibran once said, “Work is love made visible.” Ask yourself the “five whys.” If you can quickly come up with five different reasons why you want to be doing what you are doing, you’ve caught the wave of desire, passion, and emotive fire that leads to success.

M

The ocean of emotion is not a linear and regimented force. Once you relish surfing on life’s spontaneous, unpremeditated waves,

you become a wave and you make waves, a true force in life. You might be called chaotic, unorganized, messy, ADHD, and so what? It’s all energy!

ll emotions are A waves; even the emotions we don’t like are waves: anger, disappointment, sorrow, fear, the blahs. By consciously feeling and expressing them when Your thinking mind will alone, or appropriately criticize this way of living with others, these energies and working, but emotions can be transformed and are intelligent. Your heart move you positively. is a life pump connected Anger becomes power, to the great prime mover. disappointment settles Trust it and you will hear into acceptance, sorrow the beat of the rhythm of leads to liberation, fear life. It takes heart to follow turns to excitement, and your heart, but sustainthe blahs bring peace. ability demands faith. Trust Often, I do my best work in the goodness, rightness, when I’m agitated and and practicality upset. It’s all energy, and of your feelings. energy produces.

he sustainable path of success is mindful of the “fortune-mind.” This mindset is highly aware of turning everything—every person, every moment, and every “every”— into an opportunity for growth, learning, reward, advancement, and manifestation. The fortune-mind requires you to keep an open mind. Being open comes from saying “yes” to all of life. And even a “no” can be a “yes” when you know what your “no” is ultimately saying “yes” to. (You may want to read that last sentence again!) We can’t know in advance all the possible opportunities waiting for us, so trust your intuitive feeling. Even the brilliant genius Einstein said life was like “groping blindly along.” Listen for your “aha” moments.

T

Opportunity Thinking

Putting your intuition into action—“intuaction”— is an energetic way of thinking. We waste, deplete, and pollute our brainpower, which is a third of our energy, and we squander away precious time and opportunities with doubt, negativity, and cynicism. on’t discount “slow thinking,” however Absolutely, decisions about how to spend your money require

D

slow thinking, because money is like a drug that can take us either to catastrophe or delusions of grandeur. First get the facts, sit on them for a time, and then let your feeling-intuition decide. Trust your decision and move on it.

The magic of opportunity thinking comes from expecting things will be good, and will always, eventually, turn in your favor. Positively believe, and even if you don’t believe, believe! ot only believe in yourself and life, but develop an “attitude.” At almost 70 now, I feel younger, more alive, more creative, and more productive because I think the old story of getting old is just that: a story. I believe I’m “youthing” myself. The most insightful anthropologist I’ve ever read, Ashley Montagu, once wrote in Growing Young, that those with the mental disposition of remaining young were the most adaptable and lived the longest.

N

Think young, make mistakes, and know that it’s all good, all favorable.

Renewable Body

For some, the body is a nuisance, something they drag around. On the contrary, our bodies are a gift of genius. Exercise it consciously and it will speak your truth with your voice, feel the way with your heart, take you places with your legs, help out with your hands, embrace others with your arms. Your body is a miraculous medium and tool.

eyond just maintaining your body-mobile, try the “energy diet” for a renewable body. Go outside and re-energize by the penultimate physical recharger: the sun. To balance the fire, drink copious amounts of water—the seawater that we are needs constant clearing, cleansing, and refilling. For the earth element, eat less, eat natural, eat slowly and dig your hands and feet into the soil. For air, breathe, breathe, and breathe more—the simplest and quickest way for the life force to enliven you. Walking fast and breathing hard not only saves your body but regenerates and grows new brain cells.

B

The best investment you can make for your business is replenishing your greatest material resource— your body. Remember, it’s a gift!

6 Right Livelihood

Your work is meant to be “right livelihood,” a profession that is also your spiritual path, a kind of yoga, called in fact “karma yoga” in India. When profits and purpose are one and the same, you are bound to flourish. Have passion for whatever you do, make it playful and fun, and your sustainable success is destined. If you don’t have a calling full of love, intention, and joy for your business, you are in the wrong business.

ith this kind of W calling, in spite of challenges, your work becomes, in a deep way, effortless, because you are inspired. You naturally achieve your apotheosis, your highest expression of self. Like a giant Redwood tree that knows itself and reaches the light without doubt, it’s inexorably natural for you to live your destiny.

Make Change a Habit

If you are not change-able, you are not sustain-able. In this changing world where even change is changing, navigating the evolution is essential. We are creatures of habit, and habits are not easy to change—it has taken me a year and a half to remember to take my reusable shopping bag into the supermarket! But, easy or not, we must transform with the times. To become a creature of change, make a change a day. Do anything different, minor or major, little or large, to get into the change habit. Fight off “death by comfort.” Old habits need new habits. Make life a “habit yoga” of stretching, flexing, and bending in new and different postures of behavior.

ne of the dirty secrets of change-ability is to announce to your friends your intentions. Numerous studies show we are far more successful with our new resolutions when we have an “accountability buddy.” Even the Buddha said that though we all have our own path, everyone needs a sangha, a support group. Whether it’s a business circle, breakfast club, or women’s gathering, it’s a must for you and your business.

O

While you’re thinking “new and different” personally, your business reaps rewards. Remember, you are your business. Creativity is your ace in the hole because it’s free and accessible. “New and first” guarantees you a place in this survival-of-thequickest world, so always be thinking new products, new media, new distribution channels, new markets, new partners. Remember the adage: Those who create the future, profit most by it. With your entrepreneurial mindset, you have the inside edge on innovation. It takes guts to follow your guts, but keep that “risk-reward” calculus going in your head. There are no hard and fast rules or formulas for successful originality. Only you can make the call, just do it while you’re balanced … dispassionate … chill.

The E’s of Effective Communication owever much you get your inner self together, no one is an island. We live with others, we work with others, and we depend on others. Of course, connecting and caring are musts, but how do you effectively communicate with them? There’s a memorable way for communicating effectively, which I learned working with Kaiser Permanente Hospital doctors. It’s called the “Five E’s” of getting results from others. The first “E” is to Engage, which means to truly enjoy, respect, and befriend each person. All sales, whether it’s pitching a book or a medical regimen, begins with a friendly personality. Get your smile on!

H

he second “E” is Empathize, empathize, empathize. Walk in the shoes of your customer and understand their desires and needs. With the genius of our brain’s hardwired mirror neurons of empathy, we can foresee and foretell what a client’s preferences and actions might be. The third “E” is Educate. Much of selling is simply educating a customer about a particular product, so know your stuff, which is the fourth “E” of Expertise. The fifth “E” is Enroll and Enlist—close the deal. Paint the picture in your mind’s eye of how your customer’s purchase will make them feel. An image leading to feelings is the best way to impact another.

T

he extra “E,” the sixth, is applying the Five E’s to your employees and partners in such a way that it’s all Empowering! Have the larger perspective of using your professional position as a way of Evolving others (the seventh “E”) by empowering them. This is what distinguishes your work as “great work” rather than just a job. If any of your employees don’t understand that life is a growth path, why bother?

T

Let them move on.

9 Growth Plan “O”

he most sustainable way of business is to “grow” your company, your people, and yourself. The metaphor of “building” your business is unnatural. Have a “Plan O,” for Organic. Tend your work garden. Don’t force feed it. Be patient. Keep weeding.

T

Add constant doses of water (love), air (newness), fire (inspiration) and earth (resources and products). Realize that all living things have a life cycle, like the seasons.

Ask yourself, what am I to start anew (spring)? Maintain (summer)? Complete and harvest (fall)? What needs to become fallow and put to rest (winter)?

The biggest challenge for this natural plan of doing business is not branching out and breaking through, when you really must. We get comfortable, lazy, and complacent or anxietyridden and skittish. We make desperationbased decisions out of emotional imbalance, the nemesis of good judgment and wise investment. Breakthrough growth openings demand extraordinary will and focus.

B

reakthrough openings present an opportunity crisis, a crossroads for your business. Your job is to break through before you break down. Prone to denial, we usually resist what should be done. Ask yourself what you least want to do and that’s probably what you need to do. If you can’t be your own “fair witness,” find someone with objective understanding who can steer you straight and propel you forth. Following this organic business plan, like anything in nature, requires a place where you can grow. You must have fertile soil and climate—a community and location that will support you. Contribute to your local networks and neighbors. stablish the roots necessary for supportive sustainability. Nothing grows in isolation, so think of your place of business as an integral part of your community’s social ecology of mutual support and exchange. In spite of all the hype about “dog-eat-dog” social Darwinism, the fact is that successful organisms sustain because of collaboration, cooperation, and communication. Synergy wins, pure and simple.

The Fortune Formula

he one overarching habit that keeps me going and going is the “fortune formula,” a meditative visualization that can keep you motivated, strong, focused, and active.

Staying power means that the sustain-ability practices be repeated, and repeated again. The sustain-abilities must become habitual.

This simple, quick visualization always feels good, which makes it worth repeating. Here’s how it goes:

power for help in your efforts. Be grateful and give thanks for the good fortune you feel and this opportunity to manifest your vision and dreams. 5. Take action. Do the doable. Remember, a vision without action is a hallucination. Here’s the easy-to-remember version: See it, Feel it, Affirm it, Invoke it, Do it!

1. Close your eyes and visualize in golden light the best possible outcome for your business, or for any endeavor. Keep seeing your success. James Wanless, Ph.D. is a sustainability coach, See it, see it, see it. 2. As you imagine it, feel your success in your heart and throughout your body. 3. Voice and affirm that you can and that you are making your heartfelt vision come true. 4. Invoke your higher

uantum Jumps & the Science of Instantaneous Transformation by Cynthia Sue Larson

s scientists succeed in building quantum computers, we are truly living in the Quantum Age. In September 2013, NASA’s Ames Research Center and Google jointly purchased the D-Wave 2, a 512 qubit quantum computer capable of solving some of the hardest problems by quickly calculating probabilities. At the same time as humanity is figuring out just how to program and best utilize quantum computers, biologists are stunned to discover that plants and birds have been utilizing quantum processing for quite some time.

A

If you’ve ever willed yourself to get out of bed on a chilly morning, or told yourself, “I have to get over this cold right now,” you may quite possibly have jumped to a parallel world. Strange as it may seem, a growing body of evidence from several scientific fields indicates that we exist in a superposition of states, and live in a holographic multiverse consisting of many parallel worlds of possibility.

any plants and animals appear to regularly be taking advantage of amazing quantum properties in order to quickly assess large numbers of possibilities without actually trying out each and every one. Plants, for example, are capable of photosynthesizing with typical efficiencies of 95%--which is immensely superior to photovoltaic technologies. Thanks to quantum coherence, quantum entanglement, quantum tunneling, and quantum superposition of states, birds are able to navigate, humans can pick out one molecule of a fragrance in a room, and plants make the very best use of every photon of light that lands on their leaves.

M

Advantages of Quantum Jumping Consider the idea that each time you make a decision or choice, you might actually be moving between alternate realities-between parallel worlds. In those alternate realities there are so many other possible “yous” which you can connect with so strongly that the conscious awareness and energy that is you moves into that other reality.

The success of most all visualization methods and affirmations can be attributed to quantum jumping. Some of the most effective weight loss programs work by helping people lose weight by imagining they now live in an alternate reality in which they already thin. Many top athletes use visualization of perfect performance together with envisioning they can become that top athlete to improve their athletic results in real life.

When someone says “I’m faking it ‘til I make it,” they might well be envisioning themselves as being entirely transformed. A person desiring a promotion can thus emulate the dress, speech, behavior, self assurance and posture of someone the next level up, and be recognized as deserving of a promotion. ecent psychological studies conducted in the United Kingdom and California show that people who act as if they are in loving relationships can quickly develop genuine feelings of closeness for one another. Engaging in activities such as gazing into a partner’s eyes, synchronizing breathing with a partner, or holding the palm of your hand close to another’s without touching have been proven to increase closeness in both old and new relationships.

R

We can adopt physical qualities-such as the keen vision we expect of airline pilots--by dressing and acting like pilots. Harvard University researcher Ellen Langer found that people who dressed like airplane pilots and operated flight simulators scored 40% better on vision tests than study participants who sat in similar environments with “broken” simulators and did not wear pilot’s uniforms.

A

t a time when placebo research is booming at Harvard and other universities around the world, there’s increasing interest in the question of why sham surgeries, sugar pills, and placebo assistance on multiple choice tests exert such powerful influence on people. For example, a 2008 article in The New England Journal of Medicine described how a couple of years after patients participated in a randomized arthroscopic knee surgery study, medical doctors were shocked to discover that patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who received placebo (sham) surgery were just as likely to report pain relief and improved functionality than those who received the genuine medical procedure.

How Does Instantaneous Transformation Occur? he key to understanding the mechanism of instantaneous transformation comes through considering the idea that we exist in a multiverse of parallel yet interconnected realities; and that the quantum properties of entanglement, superposition of states, and teleportation are evident beyond the realm of the very small. Just as quantum particles are capable of blipping into and out of material form when not existing as pure energy, the science of quantum jumps suggests that we too, literally jump from one parallel universe of possibility to another.

T

One of the strongest indications that our universe is likely one of many is evident when viewing background cosmic radiation from the Big Bang, some 13.8 billion years ago, as detected by the European Space Agency’s Planck telescope. Scientists noted a surprising and significant concentrated

“cold spot” in the southern half of the sky when reviewing data taken by spacecraft measurements of background radiation in the form of a cosmic gravity map. According to a May 19, 2013 article in The Mail, theoretical physicist Laura Mersini-Houghton of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Carnegie Mellon professor Richard Holman, were pleased to see uneven distribution of background cosmic radiation exactly as they predicted eight years earlier. Dr. MersiniHoughton announced:

“These anomalies were caused by other universes pulling on our universe as it formed during the Big Bang. They are the first hard evidence for the existence of other universes that we have seen.”

H

ints that our universe is not the only one can also be found in the recent discovery of the surprisingly lightweight Higgs Boson, as reported in a June 2013 article in Scientific American. The unexpectedly small mass of the Higgs Boson supports the theory that ours is a highly improbable universe whose unlikeliness is balanced out by billions and billions of possible other parallel universes in which such oddities can be viewed as being statistically expected to occur somewhere, rather than living in a single symmetrical universe in which things clearly balance out.

Making Quantum Jumps he key to making a quantum jump from one possible reality to another is in the art of attaining a state of detachment, that can be accomplished through lucid dreaming or meditation. In such a meditative state, we can view ourselves as existing in a state of pure energy--of pure consciousness. From this vantage point, we become aware of simultaneously existing across a multitude of possible realities that are available to us in every moment. For example, in one reality we are adopting healthier daily diet and exercise habits. In another reality, we are fearlessly exploring our genuine passions and interests. Even a simple meditation of enjoying a blissful state of relaxed, energized mindfulness while contemplating the question, “How good can it get? can produce powerful, healthpositive, stress-reducing effects.

T

When we identify as being pure energy and consciousness rather than fixating on a particular given physical reality with its myriad of ailments and problems, we are capable of reengaging with a more enjoyable physical reality.

T

his process of disengaging and then re-engaging between different parallel universes of possibility is something akin to shifting gears on a car. Just as we must disengage from first gear by pushing the clutch pedal before shifting into second gear, so too must we first disengage from all concerns of our regular daily life before re-engaging with a reality we’d prefer to experience.

O

ne of the biggest advantages of viewing ourselves as being pure consciousness is that this corresponds to the growing consensus among physicists that you and everything around you exists in a superposition of states. In the field of quantum physics, scientists are becoming increasingly accustomed to considering quantum particles to be both matter and energy. New quantum computers are up and running and being programmed-providing us with examples of everyday objects in our regular world that depend on a brand new logic of considering how in addition to the binary states of something being True or False; some things are Trueand-False; and others are Not-True-NotFalse. In the brave new world of quantum logic, Schrödinger’s famous cat can be simultaneously both dead and alive.

No longer do physicists expect quantum behavior to stay on the quantum scale. Entire new branches of sciences now include quantum “weirdness.” Researchers now study: quantum astronomy, quantum biology, quantum chemistry, and quantum statistics, and many other aspects of quantum effects on the macroscopic scale. In other words, what happens in the quantum realm doesn’t just stay in the quantum realm, in this amazingly interactive multiverse filled with marvelous possibilities.

Cynthia Sue Larson Cynthia Sue Larson is a transformational speaker, bestselling author, life coach, and author of Quantum Jumps: An Extraordinary Science of Happiness and Prosperity. She is one of the preeminent authorities on consciousness and the newly converging fields of quantum physics, quantum biology, the placebo effect, positive psychology, sociology and alternative medicine.

Finding A New Calling in Aging John Robinson ut it’s more than that. We come into the world bearing gifts and our work is to understand, support and express these gifts for the good of all. Our hunger for personal growth stirs the psyche to express these inborn possibilities. In touch with the inner self, our gifts rise and take form spontaneously, for they are part of the ultimate gift of self. Remember the old saying, “Who you are is God’s gift to you; what you do with it is your gift to God.” Or, in the more serious words of Jesus, “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring

B

Like every living organism, the psyche expands and differentiates as it is structured and meant to do. Spontaneous personality growth happens at every age following a natural cycle through the seasons of life. There are fertile and fallow times, times to sow and times to reap, and special kinds of growth in each season. Some skills fade, new ones grow, ideas change, and goals evolve.

forth will destroy you.” We need to keep growing; we need to express our gifts. It is an imperative of life in every season. Sadly, as Jesus’ words imply, we can also turn against the self. When we betray our inner call with demands from the ego or society, we violate this essential lawfulness of the psyche, harming our growth and often causing deep pain. An angry shadow side develops and may eventually take down the false self. Yet even when times are hard, there is a path through suffering that is our own and we must follow wherever it leads even when others disagree. The poet William Stafford calls this The Way It Is. He explains,

John Robinson

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.

A

ging is a time for picking up that thread to harvest and share new gifts with those around us. In this final season, we have a chance to open our hearts, do what we love, and fulfill our part in the larger unfolding of the universe. Recovering the thread we dropped in earlier years reconnects us to our unique passion, purpose and place of this great cosmic symphony. I have been following just such a thread my whole life. For me, it has been the journey into mystical consciousness, a consciousness that reveals all life to be sacred – not as a metaphor but as a lived and witnessed reality. Looking back, I realize this has always been my calling, through psychology, psychotherapy, teaching, writing and seminary. It is the call of ultimate questions, deep love, and the

mystic’s longing for the sacred. So when a medical crisis brought my professional life to an abrupt end ten years ago, I knew it was time to pick up my thread in earnest again, for I had wandered too far afield. I returned to school for a Doctor of Ministry in interfaith spirituality and to an interfaith seminary for ordination. And I discovered (again) that when you choose your own path, it will choose you, and then a brand new life begins. y commitment now is not to a M career but to a time of life with its unique consciousness and tasks, which for me include the awakening of unconditional love for family, friends and the world itself, exploring the spirituality of aging, and living in a mystical consciousness that reveals the world to be sacred, meaningful, and infinitely precious. What is your calling thread? Go back and find it - it’s been running through your life all along. You find it in the things you love, the great joys of life, and in the desire to make a difference. Find your thread and let’s build a new and more loving world together.

John C. Robinson

John C. Robinson, Ph.D., D.Min. is a retired clinical psychologist with a second doctorate in ministry, an ordained interfaith minister, and the author of seven books on the synthesis of psychology and spirituality. His professional work specialized in midlife, men’s issues, the integration of psychotherapy and spirituality, the nature of first-hand mystical experience, the psychology and spirituality of aging, and the archetypal revelations of myth and fairytale.

FOLLOW YOUR HEART

A Heroic Journey from Paralysis to Enlightenment By Phil Devitte

“I’m afraid I have some very bad news: It looks like you’re paralyzed from the waist down.” “For how long?” I asked. “For the rest of your life.” I had been excited to get back to work after Christmas in my new BMW, but just as I switched lanes to exit I-5, I hit black ice, and my life took a different turn. The promise the New Year held vanished into a nightmare of pain and fear.

The spine is broken up into several sections known as the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral curves,” the doctor told me. “When any one of these is damaged it causes problems for the rest of the body, which may prevent it from moving properly. You have what we call a T-8 injury, or damage to your eighth thoracic bone in your vertebrae. Right about here.” He pointed to a spot on the x-ray. I nodded, fighting back the mindnumbing pain. The diagnosis got gloomier. “You also have damage to your sixth and seventh thoracic vertebra. I can’t see your spinal cord unless I cut open the bones surrounding it, which would of course do more damage. So we can’t see the severity of your spinal injury.” The neurosurgeon’s diagnosis was just as gloomy. A psychiatrist advised me to accept my fate. To do otherwise, he said, would be to dwell in denial.

T

he doctors’ words played in my head like a broken record: You’ll never walk again, you’ll never walk again, you’ll never walk again. I hadn’t been in the hospital for even twenty-four hours and the medical world was ready to write me off as a lost cause. I refused to believe them. I couldn’t. Yes, there was a dissenting voice lurking deep inside my shoulder asking, What if they’re right? What if they know something I don’t.” But then something even deeper, a knowing beyond knowing told me what I was being told wasn’t true. It wasn’t denial. This was a deep knowing at the core level of my being. Something I knew about myself just as much as the fact that my eyes were blue. That the doctors were so sure that I’d never walk again became my motivation to prove them wrong. Their dismissiveness of my case was a challenge I would not let go unanswered. For the moment, however, I was at their mercy. The neurosurgeon visited me daily. As the swelling in my back went down, he was better able to see my injuries and decide on a course of action. We’re going to have to do surgery to stabilize your spine. I believe that the best option will be to fuse your back. As you know the back is made up of many tiny bones that all work together to bend. I plan to fuse a few of those bones together by using a piece of your hipbone.” Father Mark came to see me to administer Last Rites. He heard my

confession, anointed my forehead with oil, and gave me Holy Communion. A nurse came into the room. “Time to go, Mr. Devitte. The O.R. waits for no man.”

The next forty-eight hours passed in a druginduced blur. Everything in my body—at least the parts I could feel—ached with such ferocity, it was all I could do not to cry. ater that night, after everyone had gone home, I awoke in the incandescent glow of my monitors. Tubes and wires covered me, pulsing to the beeps and hums of machines. The nightmare that had become my life hit me like a ton of bricks. Fear mingled with panic and pain shot through me, body and soul.

L

Being immobilized in a body jacket only served to add to my pain and discomfort. Nurses perfunctorily turned me in my bed every half hour. I begged them to turn me more often, but they refused. “Please, you can’t imagine how uncomfortable I am. It’s all I can do to control the pain.”

“Mr. Devitte, you’re not the only one on this floor in pain,” said a nurse as she strolled out of the room.

Anger boiled inside me. How dare they make me feel like a criminal for asking for relief. They had no idea how I was suffering. Why me? Why me? I raged into the darkness. My whole world ruined, I felt like some pawn sacrificed in a, twisted, sinister game. Well, if this is the way it’s going to be, then I don’t want to play.” I was bitter. I just wanted to die. If there were a way to kill myself, I’d have seriously considered it. But I couldn’t move more than a few inches, and those stupid nurses had everything that might come in handy for ending it all well out of reach.

B

eing sentenced to life in a wheelchair was a fate I would not accept. The time to break free from the bonds that fate had forged. Action, not resignation, was what was needed. In order to deal with my disability, I thought about the kinds of things I would have to cultivate to be successful. The doctors could only take me so far. I respected their abilities to treat my body, but I was certain they didn’t have what it would take to truly heal me. I didn’t like their God-like attitude, the way they handed down “life sentences” to patients. They might know a lot about healing, but they certainly didn’t consider the soul of those they treated. So I made a new rule for myself. I would

only surround myself with positive people, positive friends, positive family, positive technicians, positive aids, positive therapists, positive nurses and most importantly positive doctors. I also decided the other important weapons in my arsenal would be belief, faith, willpower, determination, alignment, discipline, flexibility and patience. I still didn’t have a specific plan, but somehow knew I’d already laid the groundwork for my recovery. As I lay in bed pondering my situation, I remembered a quote from Nietzsche: Become who you are. I had never given the adage much consideration because my life had been a charmed existence. I had taken my own life for granted. Now I realized that I had been asleep at the wheel of my own life. Now I wanted the world to know who I was.

“But who are you?” said a little voice inside my head. I stared into the recesses of my room until I saw nothing. I continued to stare for a long time into the nothingness, letting my weary mind rest until it too thought of nothing, remembered nothing, was nothing. The trance-like state became a meditation in which everything was still, tranquil, silent. I’d searched for such a place my whole life. Yet I had never known that was what I’d been looking for because I’d been too caught up in reacting to life.

As I lay in silence it occurred to me that the accident was exactly what I’d needed. It wasn’t a punishment or confinement. It was a wake-up call to become an active participant in shaping the rest of my existence. I’d become so addicted to the outer world that I neglected to see myself for who I really was. I’d been hungry, starved really, and never realized what I was doing to myself by ignoring the person inside me. There was great wisdom in quieting myself enough to hear who I really was My thoughts shifted to my Mom. She had once mentioned the Law of Attraction.

If we give attention to something either by thinking about how much we want it or by thinking about how much we don’t like it, we are giving it a lot of energy. This energy becomes fuel to make that thing happen,” she said. “The Law of Attraction says positive things attract to each other and negative things attract to each other. Therefore, to bring positive things in to your life you must concentrate on positive things, just as thinking about negative things will bring negative consequences.” Meditation and the Law of Attraction became cornerstones of my quest to walk again. My plan for recovery was taking concrete form. My spirit rallied to the occasion.

Not everyone, however, shared my revved-up enthusiasm to conquer my affliction. Dr. Cancro came to perform his routine examination. “You’re looking better,” he said. “What do you think now about your situation? You haven’t moved anything in a very long time. Do you still think you are going to walk again?” “Yes, I am dead certain.” The doctor’s brows raised and a look of alarm spread over his face. He leaned in and whispered. “Phil, this isn’t going to work. You must be realistic. The staff tells me your family and friends are coming in here feeding your false hopes. You need to get the idea of walking out of your mind.”

It was then that I saw clearly the next step I would have to take if I was to walk again. “Obviously, this is too much for you to handle. You have refused to listen to me and what I need. You’ve never given me a chance. Therefore I’m going to have no other choice than to fire you. Effective immediately.” I fired my doctor.

The next day I learned that I was accepted to the University of Washington Hospital’s rehab program, which specializes in spinal cord injuries. Progress was being made. My friends helped with therapeutic massages and guided meditations. Under their caring hands, I received a whole mind-body healing experience. Dr. Doug introduced himself

as my new doctor. He was upbeat and affable. For the first time, a doctor asked me how I felt about my situation. I was surprised, if not shocked. “The doctors say I’ll never walk again.” Well, we don’t say things like that here.” Said Dr. Doug. “You’re situation is very serious, but I’ve learned never to deal in absolutes. Everyone is different. We can never predict just what the human body is capable of. Why don’t you try to move your big toe for me?” I closed my eyes and visualized my body. I sent energy down my body to my toe and wiggling it.

T

“I moved it?” “You sure did. Do it again. And so I did. hat’s good. Do it My disbelief again,” said dissipated amid a Dr. Doug. My eyes flew open. surge of renewed confidence that “What?” “I said, that’s good. I would one day walk again. Move it again!” Visualizations, affirmations and prayer became daily rituals. My belief in myself grew stronger every day. Nancy, my physical therapist, helped me to improve regain my upper-body strength and wheelchair skills. She managed to hook me up to a biofeedback machine, which showed that my legs and spine were, slowly but surely, showing renewed vigor. Actual physical exercise strengthened my legs. Soon enough, I was able to crawl. Swimming followed shortly thereafter.

Finally, five months after my accident, Dr. Doug called Dr. Cancro. “Has Phil had a relapse? Does he need more surgery?” “Oh, no, no, everything is fine with Phil. We’re just fitting him with leg braces,” replied Dr. Doug.

“Leg braces?” “Yes, we believe Phil will be able to walk.” The other end of the line went silent. “Wish him the best for me.” The legs braces looked like leeches and steel robots. Strapping into them was like wrestling an alligator. They each weighed a ton. I took a few clunky steps and stopped. It was odd finally being on my feet again. With practice, I learned to walk again. Over time, I shed the braces as I put my ordeal behind me and savored life a new.

Phil Devitte Phil Devitte recorded his amazing journey in his book, FOLLOW YOUR HEART, a testimony to the power of following one’s inner heart and spirit. A former director of Think First in Palm Springs, California, he gives motivational speeches to students about driver safety as well as the importance of believing in themselves even when adversity strikes.

month later, it was time to go home for good. I kept to my mental and physical regimen. It paid off. Today, my family and I are just like any other. We laugh and play, go to work and school, take long trips, go out to eat, and to the movies. Life is better than ever. I look forward to my next long sunset walk along the beach with my wife.

faith, willpower, determination, alignment, discipline, flexibility, and patience. I depended on these strengths as weapons in my arsenal, much as a dragon slayer depends on his sword and strategy. He can’t stop it from coming into his territory or breathing fire on his village. But he can control his actions and game plan. He sees himself winning the battle.

What I learned was that achievement is very personal. It’s totally up to you. I had been looking for the magic pill in all the wrong places. I could search for it all over this world looking under every rock and through every crack. But it was right here all along within me. It was in my heart and soul. That is where I found it.

ne of the great secrets in life is that the only person you can ever control is yourself. If you don’t like something, the only thing you can do to fix it is change yourself.

CREATING A WORLD THAT WORKS FOR ALL

An Excerpt from

The Magical Path by Marc Allen

We have all the tools we need now. The process remains a mystery, but we know how to set it in motion. We’ve already seen remarkable changes in our lives; now it’s time to create some remarkable changes in our world as well. The same magical tools that work to create the life of our dreams are the tools we can use to make the world a far better place when we leave it than when we arrived here

T

he process to make major changes in the world is the same process we used to make major changes in our lives: First, we dare to dream of a world that works for all, then we imagine possibilities, and then we make plans and take the first small steps. We affirm the dream with the power of the spoken word, and we realize the dream with the power of the written word and committed action.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. MARGARET MEAD

There is a rapid route — a direct path — to changing the world for the better. As more of us realize this, change can and will happen quickly.

The Dream We have to start with a dream. Then we imagine how we can possibly achieve it. We brainstorm, make lists of What Ifs. We discuss different possibilities. Then we make clear goals and make plans to reach those goals. We take the first steps in front of us. And we change the world. So few people dare to dream of a better world. And yet that’s exactly what is needed on a global basis now: a large number of people (even though, as Margaret Mead reminds us, it can be a remarkably small percentage of the population) who have a vision of a world that works for all, and are doing something to realize that vision.

The most important thing to keep in mind, always, is the dream, the vision: Keep the dream, the vision, in mind: It is possible to create a world that works for all, where all are fed, housed, and educated. This is the Great Work ahead of us.

T

he great visionary and pioneer Buckminster Fuller realized this many decades ago. He said back in the 1960s that we now have the technology, the capability, to improve the standard of living of everyone on the planet. He said we have the tools we need to move everyone up Maslow’s pyramid of human consciousness. As we saw earlier, Maslow looked at humanity as forming a vast pyramid; at each level, we have different needs, and are at a different level of consciousness as a result. he vast number of people on the bottom of the pyramid need food and shelter. Once these things are attained, you move up the pyramid, and your needs become security and health care and recovery. Once you’ve taken care of these needs, you move up the pyramid into the wonderful, expansive worlds of education.

T

This is where we learn to do our magic. When you educate people, you give them the tools to reach the top of the pyramid of human consciousness — self-actualization, to use Maslow’s term. Fulfillment of their highest potential. Self-realization. Call it what you will.

this in mind, always: We have the technology to help everyone on earth move up the pyramid of human consciousness; all we lack is enough people using the technology to help themselves and others

More and more of us are using whatever technologies and resources are available to make this world a better place. A powerful wave of change is surging over the world — and it is change for good, for the highest good of all, if we keep affirming it.

t is self-evident I that a primary purpose of every government on earth is to take care of its people, so that everyone has food, housing, security, and education. It’s obvious that the only way this is achieved is for governments to work in partnership with their people. A great many successful countries know this already. Far too many countries, though, still don’t have a clue.

H H ow do we find solutions to the world’s problems? This is a very good question to ask. Albert Einstein reminds us that the level of thinking that created the problems is incapable of realizing the solutions to the problems. The solutions have to come from a higher level of thinking. How do we find the solutions? People are discovering solutions in a vast number of ways. For me, the writer and visionary who shows us how to find the solutions we need in the simplest, most effective way — a way I can grasp and use in my life every day — is Riane Eisler. e looked at her work earlier, in our chapter on creating successful relationships. She sums it all up in her two great books, The Chalice and the Blade and The Power of Partnership: The essence of the problem lies in the model of domination and exploitation that is entrenched throughout the world, built on a need to control, and the solution lies in the model of partnership, built on respect for one another.

W

That’s the single, simple key to making the dream work:

The single key to creating a world that works for all is to work in partnership with everyone. It’s that simple.

34

he world’s problems are caused by domination and exploitation, with their underlying fear and need to control. The solutions are to be found by working in partnership, with underlying respect for each other — working together to dream of a world that works for all, to imagine how we can possibly achieve it, how we can work together to create it, taking one small step at a time.

Frequencies of Healing:

We Are All Sound Healers By Jonathan Goldman & Andi Goldman

e teach people how to use sound for healing. Often, when we first tell people about this, most assume we are talking about some kind of music that needs a musical background and training. We are not! We differentiate between sound and music for this very reason—we are not talking about learning to sing and getting up in front of an audience to perform a song. That can be a very wonderful and courageous and even healing thing to do. But that is entertainment. We are talking about entrainment—the ability of one sound to shift and change the frequencies of another sound in order restore health and balance and create transformation.

W

Sound is an amazingly powerful tool. It is not something that occurs when we hear music or listen to something. It is an energy that has the ability of affecting our brain, our nervous system, our heart rate and much more, including actually shifting and changing our cellular structure and DNA. And this is only on a physiological level. When you consider the use of sound on the emotional body and particularly, the mental and spiritual bodies—the possibilities are endless.

O

ur modern scientists are now in agreement with our ancient mystics—that everything is in a state of vibration. The idea of sound healing is quite simple—it is that when our body begins to vibrate out of its correct frequency, we become ill. By using sound—particularly our own self-created sound such as humming or toning an elongated vowel sound—we can restore our body back to its correct vibrations.

Jonathan Goldman

In addition, our chakras, the etheric centers of our body are understood as being composed of vibration and as such, they are extremely easily affected by vibration—especially by our own sounds. Thus, one of the first exercises we teach at the “Frequencies of Healing” workshop is called “Vowels As Mantras” in which participants learn to resonate, balance and heal their chakras with their own self-created sounds. This is something that everyone can learn to do. And it is life changing. We also share experiences working with many other modalities of sound healing that anyone can learn to use, including the use of sacred Pythagorean Tuning Forks. It is an extraordinary workshop that will provide lifelong benefits.

T

he weekend event is enhanced by a full evening multi-media lecture presentation which introduces the fundamentals of Sound as a healing modality. It is always our honor and pleasure to share these teachings with new audiences. The World of Sound is vast and powerful. There is truly something in it for everyone!

Jonathan Goldman Jonathan Goldman is a writer, musician and teacher. He is an authority on sound healing and a pioneer in the field of harmonics. Jonathan is the author of HEALING SOUNDS: The Power of Harmonics, THE 7 SECRETS OF SOUND HEALING, SHIFTING FREQUENCIES, CHAKRA FREQUENCIES coauthored with his wife Andi, and THE DIVINE NAME: The Sound That Can Change the World, winner of the 2011 Visionary Award for “Best Healing Book”. He has studied with masters of sound from both the scientific and spiritual traditions, including the Dalai Lama’s Chanting Gyuto and Gyume Monks and has been empowered by the Chant Master of the Drepung Loseling Monastery to teach Tibetan Overtone Chanting. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Film Making from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in the Independent Study on Sound Healing from Lesley College. Law of One By James Phillips

I have made no deceptions. I have told no lies. What my heart hated I did not do. I am One with the invisible God that created me. I will live for millions of years in this truth.” …. Pharaoh Akhenaten 1367 B.C.E.

O ver 3500 years ago, Pharaoh Akhenaten had a beautiful dream for Egypt and all mankind. He dreamed of a world where everyone lived in peace, were equal under the law, and freely offered service to each other. Akhenaten was a man with a mission; of rare intelligence and deep perception, with great sensitivity and a gift for words, and possessing an intense desire for universal peace and understanding. His aim, it is clear, was to purify a way of life he believed had strayed far from its true course through practice of a spiritual philosophy he called “Ankh en Maat” or “Living in Truth”, echoes of which birthed Christianity, Judaism, and Islam over a thousand years after his time.

khenaten believed passionately in the Law of One and the myth of Zep Tepi, or First Time, when enlightened semi-divine beings gave the early Khemitians (what the ancient Egyptians actually called themselves) a written language to express themselves, astronomy and sciences to study, notions of ethics, justice, and law, and the technology to build monumental works in stone. The semi-divine beings taught the Khemitians that all things are One, that all beings are One, that there are infinite forms of life throughout the Universe but the evolution of life is the same for all. Mind-body-spirit complexes like human beings ascend gradually over many lifetimes through seven densities of a Great Physical Plane of Life ‌ the higher the density, the higher the level of consciousness obtained by the mind-body-spirit complex. The closest analogy is that of music, whereby each note on a scale of seven notes is higher than the preceding note and the eighth note begins a new octave.

s per the Law of One, mineral and water life appears first learning from fire and wind the awareness of being in the First Density of life. Second Density is growth of this awareness into plant life and lower animals with some sense of self. In the Third Density, the density of present day Earth, mind-body-spirit complexes come forth sufficiently self-aware to become conscious of other-Selves. In this density, choice and free will affects self-awareness. Compassion for other-Selves and the sorrows of the Third Density

becomes important as mind-body-spirit complexes seek wisdom in the Fourth Density. The Fifth Density is devoted to balancing compassion with wisdom and forgiveness of others. Graduation from this density requires commitment of service to the Law of One. In the Sixth Density, mind-body-spirit complexes practice using the compassionate wisdom learned in the Fourth and Fifth Densities to serve the Law of One. In the Seventh Density, the gateway dimension, mind-body-spirit complexes now understand the sacramental nature of all things and have no need of ego or identity, no past or future, and know themselves as co-creators with the consciousness we call God.

ike Russian dolls that contain dolls that contain smaller dolls that contain even smaller dolls, there is a working unison or correspondence between the seven densities of the Great Physical Plane of Life. The famous Egyptian axiom of “As Above, So Below addresses this mirroring relationship perfectly and is key to understanding the multi-dimensional reality in which

L

The seven densities of the Great Physical Plane of Life overlap and inter-penetrate each other in same time and space but are separated by progressively higher rates of vibration. Matter within the lower densities like rocks, trees, etc. vibrates so slowly that we mistakenly believe there is no movement at all. Matter in the higher densities vibrates so fast that we simply cannot see it. The analogy of the hummingbird bird perfectly illustrates this: the hummingbird’s wings vibrate much too fast to be seen but, quite obviously, the wings must be in motion because the hummingbird can fly.

mind-body-spirit complexes exist mentally, materially, and spiritually. Planets, comets, and asteroids orbit around the Sun and, likewise, protons, electrons, and neutrons orbit around the nucleus of the atom. Bigger structures are connected to smaller structures, the outer universe around us is expressed by an inner universe within us, everything is harmonious and balanced and One.

T

he Law of One elegantly but simply states that there is only unity. This unity, however, has both a potential and a kinetic which yields intelligent energy that Akhenaten worshipped as love/light emanating from its source, the Infinite Creator. The One, then, to Akhenaten was symbolized as a dot at the center of the circle of Creation. The mathematically perfect circle surrounding a single dot at its center symbolized the outward flow of love/light to all of Creation from its divine source.

C

osmic harmony was the model for earthly harmony in the Egyptian Temple. Intellectual life was part of the spiritual life; mental life was a reflection of the divine life; and Ascension was the most important ideal to strive for. This holistic philosophy accounted for the variety, complexity, and multiplicity of life, but never implied separation; unity was always present. To acquire knowledge was to observe the divine at work; all branches of learning were divine. Science was incorporated into the highest exaltation of knowledge, the Law of One. owever, by the time of Akhenaten, the golden age of Zep Tepi had long been forgotten. Human personalities were given to the Law of One in a futile attempt to comprehend the incomprehensible. Akhenaten would not accept that the universe was created, maintained, and transformed by an array of anthropomorphic half man/half god religious deities because, under the Law of One, it was impossible for the Infinite Mind that created the cosmos to take physical form in a finite body.

H

The theology of Akhenaten’s new religion was breathtakingly simple: the One was Infinite Mind or Spirit; therefore, the language of the One must be mental or spiritual and the divine essence of mindbody-spirit complexes was also spiritual -imperishable, infinite, and constant.

T

o win at the game of life, according to Akhenaten, you must see the One in each moment. Gaze into a mirror. See the One. Look at the other-Self. See the One. Look out at all of Creation. See the One. Consider all of the thoughts you created today. Was service to otherSelves freely given? Your life can flow in harmony with the One if you wish it to do so. Service to otherSelves frees you from the illusion of the separate Self and awakens you to the Oneness that lies within.

Akhenaten taught that all things are essentially made of the same “One-stuff”, inter-dependent, and totally connected. You cannot really be separated from any “thing”; you are part of every “thing”. But you can think you are separate. You can act like you are separate. As simplistic as it may sound, selfishness is the root cause of overpopulation, starvation, wars, and climate change here on the Earth.

A

s Pharaoh of Egypt, Akhenaten always signed his name followed by the phrase “ankh en maat” which translates as “he who lives in truth” or “living in truth”. The root word of “maat” is “maa” meaning “to observe” or “to examine”, therefore, “maat” can be translated as “that which has been perceived or examined”. Obviously, Akhenaten coined the phrase “ankh en maat” to inspire us to live a “thoroughly examined” life ever conscious of our Oneness and to resist the illusion of the separate Self. OK, so how do you live a “thoroughly examined” life? Contemplate your motives for giving love. Do you personally stand to gain something from that giving? If so, it contaminates the opportunity to live in Oneness. For example, if you give a gift to your lover, do you expect to receive extra affection in return? When you conditionally give something away -- even under the guise of love -- in order to get something back, you have lost the opportunity for growth.

F

ocus your attention on the “wordof-God” that appears in your consciousness as intuition and act on this intuition expressing loving words and peaceful action towards other-Selves. Allow unselfish love to radiate to other-Selves through you. Think of your real Self as a faucet and unselfish love as the water pouring out of you. Let unselfish love flow freely knowing that your reservoir will always be replenished in kind.

“I have made no deceptions. I have told no lies. What my heart hated I did not do. I am One with the invisible God that created me. I will live for millions of years in this truth.”

P M haraoh Akhenaten’s prophetic words may inspire you even today. “I have made no deceptions. I have told no lies.” Understand that you cannot harm anyone without harming your real Self. “What my heart hated I did not do.” Do not waste time and effort doing anything that, in your heart, you know is wrong for you. “I am One with the invisible God that created me.” Your mind is the God-given tool you use to live in this world and to create the experiences you want and need to experience. “I will live for millions of years in this truth.” Serve all, love wastefully, and strive to live in truth and you can achieve Oneness too.

aybe now you can feel it. Down deep, you know it. Coming in this era is a new ethic, a stronger sense of community, a heartfelt desire for a new world grounded in the kind of love -- compassion, kindness, caring, sharing -- that we all want to receive and so desperately need to give to each other. Akhenaten is whispering to you from across the ages. Can you hear him?

Standing At the Crossroads of Power: The Sacred Wheel and the Most Important Decisions of Your Life Lynn Andrews

T

he sacred wheel of the four directions is a symbol of the unity of the universe. It is also a wonderful process for understanding where you are in your Earth walk so that you can make wise decisions moving forward. When you put something on the sacred wheel, you create the opportunity to see the whole picture. The world in which we live today is so fragmented and fast-paced, and we go through much of it with blinders on so that we don’t get lost in all the confusion.

T

he problem with blinders is that they also keep us from seeing the great possibilities that life holds for us. We end up not looking at the things that are most important to us until they are in jeopardy. The sacred wheel shows you how to take off those blinders and find the still point at the center of your existence, from which place you can face your life and any conundrum it throws at you in a vibrant and life-affirming way.

We all face many crossroads in our lives, more so today, perhaps, that at any earlier time in our history. These crossroads are places where we must make and implement important decisions regarding the direction we are going in life, and they are not always an easy place to be. Sometimes, especially with the most important decisions of all, every direction we look seems to be fraught with peril. When you stand at this kind of a crossroads, what do you do? The first thing you want to do is place yourself at the very center of the crossroads. The center of any crossroads is a place of tremendous power because it is the place where decisions must be made and acted upon. Making decisions generates energy and gathering the resources to act upon those decisions generates more energy, the energy you need to propel yourself into action. Power is always found in movement.

F

rom the center of the crossroads, the most important thing for you to do is to find your own personal truth about the situation that has brought you here, regardless of what that truth may be. I say, “regardless of what that truth may be,” because so often the reason we end up muddled in our lives, not knowing which way to turn, is because we don’t want the truth to be what it really is or we are afraid that truth we discover will not be what we want it to be. This truth already resides within you, but finding your way to it isn’t always easy.

hat is where the sacred wheel comes in. When you stand at the center of a crossroads, you are also standing at the center of the sacred wheel of life, and you discover that using the sacred wheel opens you to your own truth in a way that is comfortable and workable to you. It is not someone else standing there telling you what you must see and think and feel and do. It is you, balancing your own fears, needs, responsibilities and desires against the situation you are facing in such a way that truth, understanding, acceptance and even direction come in like welcome friends.

T

he sacred wheel of the four directions shows you how to look at the totality of what you are facing and your place in it. Each direction on the wheel represents its own realm of power, mastery and magic, just as each direction of the crossroads you are facing represents its own world of possibilities and peril. Standing at the center of the wheel, you begin with the teachings of the south, the place of beginning: the physical world. Once you understand your physical place in the situation that has brought you to the crossroads, you move around the rest of the wheel, looking at your emotional well-being, your dreams in life, how you feel about what is going on and where you want to go, what your mind has to say about it, both the scary stories it tells you (which are usually not true) and the amazing power of your intellect and creativity to resolve the dilemma you face. You also look at how this situation affects you spiritually, what the divine light of your life asks you to see. Even if you don’t have a personal relationship with the Divine, all of us know divinity, whether we find it in nature, art, music, whatever it is that touches your soul and inspires you to great heights. What does this divine vision tell you about what you are facing, your role in it and where to go next?

Indigenous peoples have used medicine wheels for thousands of years as part of their sacred life and the life of their communities. There are wheels that are used in sacred ceremony and wheels that are used to guide and inform the people as they move through life. he sacred wheel that my teachers and I use is not based on the medicine wheels of any indigenous culture. It is born from our understanding of the sacred feminine on Mother Earth as it has been preserved and handed down from shaman to apprentice, mother to daughter, for many thousands of years. It is an earth-based wheel that teaches us how to live on our great Mother Earth in harmony, joy and abundance and it helps us find our own personal truth in life and the answers we need when decisions must be made. It brings us to the place where we are one with the Great Spirit and all of life, which is the true source of wisdom and power in the universe.

3 Steps to Heart-Based Living By Ronna Prince, Filmmaker, Sacred Journey of the Heart

DIVE in, TUNE in, LIGHTEN up! It seems that now we are inundated with messages about living in the heart. It’s the latest catch-phrase. But really, what does it all mean? It means living in balance with emotions and thoughts. It means allowing one’s heart to lead the way in decision making and actions. It does not mean letting unchecked feelings rule your life. But it also means, not letting unexpressed feelings limit your interaction and connection with others.

M

ost of us have been brought up to be logical and rational. To hide our emotions and just “get over it”. The problem with this is that we really can’t solve today’s problems that were created by analytical and mind-based approaches. I’m convinced that the analytical approach is what got us to where we are today, in many of the distressing situations we see in our own lives, communities and on a global scale.

S

o the question is: how do we really embrace heart-based living and be effective as leaders and decision makers in these times of change? I believe we can do this by using a heart-based approach which has been distilled down to 3 simple steps: Dive In, Tune In, and Lighten up. It really is a simple process. It starts with a choice to go into the heart-based feelings and explore what is there. If you can’t or won’t do that, I’ve found that you’re putting a veneer over the truth of your existence. Mastering our emotions through the heart is the key to this time of intense transition. When we check into our hearts, we tend to make wiser and more compassionate choices. And with that, live more peaceful and connected lives.

STEP 1: The first step is to have the willingness to dive in to the emotions locked inside the heart. This does not mean re-experiencing the traumas of the past. Rather it is to acknowledge that your heart had to shut down in the past as a way of dealing with the hurts all humans experience to one extent or another. In diving in to the heart (step 1), we are really just allowing the awareness of feelings and emotions to surface. In this step, we dive in to touch what’s been locked inside. We follow the breath into our hearts and listen. We can ask “what’s in my heart?” Usually it’s a two or three word message that bubbles up, like: “I’m afraid”, or “be careful”, or “go for it!”

S

TEP 2: The next step is to tune into the feelings behind these initial pearls of heartwisdom. “What is my heart telling me?” If you hear: “I’m afraid” or “be careful”, that’s informing you that you need to spend some time allowing the associated emotional imprints to emerge. We do that by feeling whatever is there and accepting the feeling no matter what it is: Fear, anger, sadness, depression, happiness, joy. Tune into it, and allow it to move and flow. As we allow ourselves to tune into these emotional states, we move the energy. When energy moves, there is room for heart-wisdom to emerge. Tuning in to the heart is what takes practice, because we’re used to turning to the mind to find our answers. But the truth is, our hearts know. Our minds will rationalize or justify. But the authentic tuned-in feelings of our hearts, will always lead us to compassionate and wise choices.

T he final step in this 3 part formula is: Lighten up! This is an essential part of the 3 step process. It means that after we do some intense emotional healing, we consciously choose to relax, enjoy and embrace the gifts in life. At first, we have to really focus on this and make it a priority. Because in dealing with emotions, we can easily get stuck in a state of perpetual healing and forget to enjoy each day. So in this final step, we commit to looking around us and seeing beauty and joy, even if it’s just a small thing, like a flower or a bird’s song or the smile of a loved one. Living in the heart is a balanced place, and in that balance, we make room for more joy and peace, not by ignoring, but by embracing the wisdom of the heart.

Ascension By Sonja Grace

When we watch a movie, we cover our eyes in the scary parts but love to see the bad guy get taken down. This is a great display of the duality and how we interpret the good and bad through what we believe. The real question is what has history taught us? Did we ever hold clubs in our hands and act like cavemen?

he human consciousness has been morphed through time with influence from religion to science telling us what to believe. When we have so much feedback constantly barraging our own sensory system we can lose touch with what is reality. Humanity was once connected to the Earth and used the energetic sources provided to navigate a much more complex system within the body.

T

We look outside and think we are seeing everything there is to see and yet to the untrained eye we miss half of what is there. Perception of reality is constantly being influenced by our own species like a cosmic game to see how many ways we can fool ourselves and each other. Some people feel a spiritual urgency despite their belief systems. They are triggered by events our earth has not had for thousands of years. The ice melting in the Arctic is a big sign change is happening. The earth's atmosphere is collapsing and the magnetic field is fading according to some scientists. Is this the energy that has everyone rushing for their own ascension? The sun gave birth to our planet and they communicate with solar flares and earthquakes like a love song in the galaxy. We mere mortals have missed the signs because we have limited ourselves to believing we are the highest intelligence. All the while nature and her living world communicate as we do.

Why do we rush for spiritual enlightenment now? We are at a close to our hundreds of incarnations here on earth. Many came through at the time of Atlantis and brought the human race to where it is today; incarnating lifetimes and struggling to clear karmic ties to the past. Today we have a much louder message as the earth’s energy has fashioned a series of events to signal us things are changing. We feel it and some respond by choosing a spiritual approach with nonviolent action while others buy guns, dig shelters and store water.

T

he real shift is many of us are being called back home. Home for each person is somewhere up in the night sky, for we all come from different parts of the Universe and we gathered here to experience consciousness in human form. But over the centuries we were distracted with the feeling of the physical and developed amnesia to our past lives and original home. Humans like all life on earth feel the change and want to have their karma cleared before anything happens. It is important to understand our belief systems have us disconnected from the very source that assists us in our awakening. The Earth’s energy is what guides us through this human experience! Your greatest act to clear your karma is to forgive yourself and others. or over thirty years, author and Mystic Healer, Sonja Grace has been offering her clients, both in the United States and abroad, immediate stability, clarity, and guidance. Through her healing, counseling and spiritual processing, Sonja has a wide variety of talent to choose from in which she accesses her ability to channel and communicate with the divine. She is the author of Angels in the 21st Century and her latest book, Earth Ways Healing Medicine for the Soul, provides a pathway to the four seasons through prayer and ceremony and is a companion to the film presentation Earth Ways Series.

“A Cabaret of Consciousness”

Ancient Wisdom, New Thought and New Science though Entertainment. By Gina Citoli

In 2001 I was introduced to a very unique and compelling workshop. It used stories, music and media as well as teaching a healing technique. It was very empowering and had a lasting effect on me. A few years later through a series of synchronicities I ended up being the assistant to the woman who taught the classes. Along with assisting her I was asked to write some music and perform it in the classes and discovered the live resonance of the songs had an even greater effect.

hen the owner of the school decided it was time for her to do something else I was also ready to move on. I contemplated what direction to go and felt I wanted to take my background in music, theater, holistic healing, metaphysics and the evolution of consciousness and put them all together. Thus “A Cabaret of Consciousness” was born. The show is a blend of ancient wisdom, new thought, new science, theater, music, storytelling, humor and a lot of fun.

W

O

ne of the things I learned from teaching and attending workshops and lectures is that it is important for people to hear things many different times and ways to change patterns and perceptions.. My intention is to raise consciousness, empower and inspire others and offer hope and infinite possibilities by presenting information that has customarily been offered in workshops, books and lectures through entertainment.

have found that this show has been my own journey of reconnection and enlightenment. The very first show someone came up to me afterwards and asked “Do you do all the things you have laid out in the show?” I said “Not yet but I will!” Be careful what you intend. LOL my intentions have held me to my words and the truth of walking my own talk. I am closer to saying yes I can do all that is in the show however the show and I continue to evolve as new information comes in but it is a never ending journey which is life!

I

A Cabaret of Consciousness” stars Mama Earth and she opens the show with a song called The Natural Order of Things and she shares with the audience the importance of reconnecting to the Natural Order of Things, she asks us to contemplate the effect we have on each other, the environment and the animal kingdom and includes the universe itself as more and more we are learning that we effect everything with our thoughts, actions, reactions, emotions and words. And this becomes the premise of the show as she lays out her plan of how to reconnect with The Natural Order, Source Energy and Each Other.

With the New Year I started to evaluate my progress from an evolutionary standpoint particularly since we are shifting so quickly and inner work and preparedness is our best guide through the changes to come. Here are some of the questions I asked myself. I invite you to join me!

1

Check in and see how you are doing on being connected to The Natural Order of Things. How aware are you of the effect you are having on all of life? I dug deep on this one and looked at how my own internal natural order of things was doing and realized some adjustments were needed as the more I am aligned and balanced in my own being the greater the effect on the world around me. I have become more consciousness of the effects of my thoughts and words and even how I move in the world.

2 3

Mama Earth also has the Four Pillars of her plan. Kindness, Empathy, Respect and Consciousness Use of Words. Mama says; Kindness, empathy, respect and consciousness use of words are imperative in ending conflict, misunderstanding and violence. Check in on all of these and remember they apply to all of life and that includes yourself. How well are you doing?

How often are you in the vibration of Love? Love is our highest frequency it can heal all disease and come up and over all perceived obstacles. Be in your heart and it will lead the way for “It All Comes Down to Love.” These are just a few of the principles “A Cabaret of Consciousness” is built – see where they take you. They have taken me on a most magical journey.

Gina Citoli is an award winning singer/songwriter. Her voice is powerful and transforming. Her performances are captivating and she performs with a passion that reflects her commitment to the creation of a conscious planet earth. Her music and unique shows reflect the principles of Gina has performed to standing ovations and rave reviews from New York's Battery Park and Den Design-Forum of the Museums Quarter in Vienna Austria to the Beverly Hillshire Screening facility in Beverly Hills CA. to name a few.

?

P

erhaps you want a companion or significant other to share your life with. Or possibly a reigniting of a current romance will open you to more joy and happiness. The trick to attracting what you really want, whether it is love or a more consistent spiritual practice, is to stay focused on your heart’s desires. Whatever you vividly imagine must inevitably come to pass. And what a better way to energize your enthusiasm for your ardent desires than with glittering gemstones! Color and gems coupled with intention offer you the gift of attraction as well as distraction to re-focus you from those troubling thoughts as they redirect your attention over to our wishes, dreams and aspirations with their luminous light. They remind you to focus on what you do want, not what you don’t want. t’s easy to work with gemstones. Simply carry a stone in your pocket, purse or brief case or place it on your desk or in your pillow case at night before sleep. As you place the stone or stones on or around you, form the intention or thoughts as to why you are using that rock. If you want more love in your life, you may use a rose quartz. Need more selfconfidence? Use a citrine. Every time you touch the stone, look at it or think of it, remember why you are working with it and reaffirm your intention.
