It is hard to believe Luminato is already five years old. We are very proud of what we have accomplished in that time—including the commissioning of almost 50 new works from Canadian and international artists. This year we explore the idea of storytelling. Artists have long been inspired by stories and images from the past, and the 2011 Festival includes our largest commission to date: a new adaptation of One Thousand and One Nights from acclaimed director Tim Supple (whose multilingual A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a Festival highlight in 2008). This monumental work, adapted for the first time by a woman and featuring 30 artists from the Arab world, transports us back to the legendary world of Shahrazad, whose telling of stories to keep herself alive reminds us of the power words have to change lives and societies. 2011 is also a year in which we celebrate Toronto. Some of our city’s top companies are featured in collaboration with guest artists from across the country and around the world. Chinese actors join Theatre Smith-Gilmour in a work developed in partnership with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Necessary Angel brings us two works: Tout Comme Elle (Just Like Her), directed by Brigitte Haentjens, and Andromache, adapted from Racine’s play by Evie Christie and directed by Scottish director Graham McLaren. And Soulpepper offers audiences an opportunity to see the company’s best work condensed into an intensive repertory program. Meanwhile, our new hub location in Metro Square, home to our series of free outdoor concerts throughout the Festival, features some of Canada’s best-known artists as well as new discoveries from around the world, including a concert in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. To all of you who have been with us since the beginning, thank you for your support of Luminato. Five Years of Luminato In 2003, Tony Gagliano and David Pecaut met for the first time over lunch at Grano restaurant. Over calamari, pasta, and wine, the two passionate city-builders found their mutual beliefs in the transformative power of the arts, and thus, Luminato was born. In Luminato’s most ambitious commission to date, British director Tim Supple (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Luminato 2008) unites with acclaimed Lebanese novelist Hanan al-Shaykh to unearth the true character of the One Thousand and One Nights. Written in Arabic from tales gathered in India, Persia, across the great Arab Empire, the One Thousand and One Nights are the mesmerizing stories told by Shahrazad night after night, under sentence of death, to the king Shahrayar who has vowed to marry a virgin every night and kill her in the morning. Erotic, brutal, witty, and poetic, the tales tell of the real and supernatural, love and marriage, power and punishment, rich and poor, and the endless trials and uncertainties of fate.

Five of his classic stories come to the stage in a historic collaboration between Theatre Smith-Gilmour (multiple award winners for their Chekhov’s Shorts and Chekhov Longs...In the Ravine) and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, where it debuted in 2007. Three Canadian and three Chinese actors, performing in English and Mandarin, use body language to create an astonishing diversity of characters— men and women, children and the aged—along with everything from a rickshaw to a pair of stone lions at the entrance to a house.

Akram Khan and Nitin Sawhney celebrate the creative process in this thrilling fusion of dance, live music, and projection. Akram Khan, noted for his distinctive blend of classical Indian kathak with contemporary dance technique, is one of the most acclaimed choreographers of his generation in Britain today. Nitin Sawhney— composer, producer, songwriter, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist—is a latter-day Renaissance man who has collaborated with Khan over much of the past decade on such works as kaash, zero degrees, bahok, and, most recently, Vertical Road.

Toronto-born actress Lisa Ray (Deepa Mehta’s Bollywood/Hollywood and Water) joins Kabir Bedi (Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na and the James Bond film Octopussy) in this saga of political and familial strife, palace intrigue, and the undying devotion of Emperor Shah Jahan to his wife, in whose memory the Taj Mahal was built. Live theatre meets reality TV and avantgarde visual arts, as a daily drama unfolds within an installation created by Berlin-based artist David Levine. Three actors inhabit a house for eight hours a day, spontaneously going about their business while seamlessly repeating a script by playwright Jason Grote. Every day, the performers loop through this same dialogue, improvising its staging to suit their needs as well as those of their characters. As you watch through the windows of designer Marsha Ginsberg’s fullyfunctioning house, constructed inside the project space, and on a live video feed randomly edited to create a unique TV drama, Habit raises fascinating questions about the nature of performance, spectatorship, and even reality itself.
This production includes mature content. Parental discretion is recommended.

Sargasso refers to the vast, tangled floating masses of living matter and cast-off material that drifts at the centre of the Atlantic. The environment within the sweeping atrium of the Allen Lambert Galleria makes a vast canopy, a sanctuary that slowly shifts and floats above the city. The building is no longer an entity of steel, glass, and stone but a participant in a symbiotic artistic event that shapes the nature of the environment itself.

Last spring, Britain’s prestigious Hay Festivals celebrated 39 Arab writers age 39 and under, compiling the anthology Beirut39 with a preface by Hanan al-Shaykh (One Thousand and One Nights). Now, Luminato presents a select group of those writers in an onstage conversation about contemporary literature in the Arab world. Moroccan journalist Yassin Adnan’s most recent poetry collection is La akad ara (I Can Hardly See). Saudi author Mohammad Hassan Alwan is the writer of the novels Saqf elkefaya and Touq altahara. Egyptian-born Randa Jarrar won the Arab American Book Award for her novel A Map of Home. Lebanese author Hyam Yared won the 2009 Prix Phoenix for Sous la tonnelle and Joumana Haddad is the 2010 recipient of the Blue Metropolis award for Arab writers as well as administrator of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (known as the Arabic Booker). Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, one of Canada’s iconic fashion designers creates a world of wearable fantasy. One of the most acclaimed Canadian designers of his generation, Denis Gagnon is noted for his bold traversal of the boundaries between the fashion industry and art. For over a decade, his concept of clothing as “moving sculpture” has informed his innovative collections for fashion lovers across Canada while also finding expression in the realms of pure creativity. As a result, Gagnon, who began his career designing theatrical costumes, recently became the first Canadian in his field to have his work exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

In his seminal 1945 book A Grammar of Motives, literary theorist Kenneth Burke suggested that “the scene contains the act”—that the setting of a play inevitably implies the action that is to unfold. With this idea also in mind, Ben and Watson take us on a fascinating journey into the repertoire of the world’s master magicians, revisiting their greatest illusions in the context of “scenes” realized through the prism of projected imagery and John Lang’s playful score.

The Process of Collaboration Catch a cinematic glimpse of the creation of Akram Khan’s stunning dance pieces. Get a close-up look at the music of Homayun Sakhi and the Alim Qasimov Ensemble. And catch a rare screening of the dystopian sci-fi film 2081, with an original score by the Kronos Quartet.
A pioneer of Indian cinema in the 1950s and ’60s, actor, director, and producer Raj Kapoor frequently named characters he played in his films after himself, inviting viewers to regard his stories not as self-contained narratives but as acts of self-dramatization. Srinivas Krishna’s participatory installation draws a connection between Kapoor’s use of screen personae as projections of himself and the selfdramatizing portraits ordinary people commonly take in Indian photo studios. A collage of these portraits leads the viewer to a loop of clips from Kapoor’s films in which Krishna manipulates the actor-director’s image, even taking his place on screen. Viewers then enter a photo tent where their portraits are taken in the guise of Kapoor’s characters and inserted into his cinematic worlds on a “photo wall”— a fantasizing reinvention of identity that takes us to the heart of Kapoor’s art and its hold on Indian audiences.

Writer, teacher, and activist Laura Simms (the adopted mother of Ishmael Beah, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier) has worked with communities from New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina to Sierra Leone. Dan Yashinsky is a radio host, author, and community organizer whose work includes Talking You In, a words-and-music exploration of a family’s neo-natal intensive care unit experiences that has been used in medical staff training programs.

GENERAL ADMISSION EVENTS
MOBILE PHONES
Some of our ticketed events are general admission, which means admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please review your tickets to check if an event you purchased is a general admission event.
We request that mobile phones be turned off prior to the start of a performance. If you must keep your phone turned on, please place it on silent or vibrate mode. Also, please remember that light from your phone may be distracting to other audience members.
If you have purchased tickets to an event with general admission, we recommend you arrive early. A small number of seats may be reserved at general admission events for sponsors, donors, and other invited guests. Doors for most of our venues open approximately 30 minutes before the performance is scheduled to begin (unless otherwise noted); however, sometimes for reasons beyond our control this may not occur and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
Luminato and its artistic and venue partners are committed to providing barrier-free access. If you require wheelchair seating, please advise the ticket agent at time of purchase. Additionally, many of our venues provide other amenities for people with disabilities, such as assistive listening devices. ARRIVE ON TIME
YOUNG AUDIENCES
Our performances start promptly at the time listed on the ticket, so please allow sufficient time for travel, parking, ticket collection, and other pre-performance activities.
Luminato welcomes young audiences to all of our performances, free and ticketed. However, some performances may not be suitable for young children and parental guidance is always recommended.
LATECOMERS For the safety and comfort of the performers and other audience members, latecomers will be admitted into venues at a suitable break during the performance. Similarly, if you leave a performance for any reason once it has commenced, you will be re-admitted only during a suitable break in the performance. Late seating breaks vary from performance to performance and some performances (especially those without intermissions) may not include a late seating break. We regret that we cannot provide refunds to those who arrive after, or leave during the performance once it has begun.
TICKETS In order to maintain a safe environment, everyone attending ticketed performances must possess a valid ticket, including babes in arms. For children’s programs, please make sure you purchase a ticket for everyone attending the performance.
BAG CHECK Many of our venues have policies regarding the checking of bags and other larger items as condition of entry and we recommend that, whenever possible, you bring with you only what is necessary.
AUDIO/VIDEO RECORDING AND PHOTOGRAPHS Unless otherwise noted, audio and video recording and taking photos (including camera phones) at ticketed performances are prohibited for copyright reasons. You may be asked to check these items as a condition of entry.
