It is hard to believe Luminato is already five years old. We are very proud of what we have accomplished in that time—including the commissioning of almost 50 new works from Canadian and international artists. This year we explore the idea of storytelling. Artists have long been inspired by stories and images from the past, and the 2011 Festival includes our largest commission to date: a new adaptation of One Thousand and One Nights from acclaimed director Tim Supple (whose multilingual A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a Festival highlight in 2008). This monumental work, adapted for the first time by a woman and featuring 30 artists from the Arab world, transports us back to the legendary world of Shahrazad, whose telling of stories to keep herself alive reminds us of the power words have to change lives and societies. 2011 is also a year in which we celebrate Toronto. Some of our city’s top companies are featured in collaboration with guest artists from across the country and around the world. Chinese actors join Theatre Smith-Gilmour in a work developed in partnership with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Necessary Angel brings us two works: Tout Comme Elle (Just Like Her), directed by Brigitte Haentjens, and Andromache, adapted from Racine’s play by Evie Christie and directed by Scottish director Graham McLaren. And Soulpepper offers audiences an opportunity to see the company’s best work condensed into an intensive repertory program. Meanwhile, our new hub location in Metro Square, home to our series of free outdoor concerts throughout the Festival, features some of Canada’s best-known artists as well as new discoveries from around the world, including a concert in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. To all of you who have been with us since the beginning, thank you for your support of Luminato. If you are joining us for the first time, we hope you will also discover ways to make this year’s Festival story your own.

Welcome to our fifth annual celebration of the creative spirit here in Toronto, across Canada, and around the world. My pride in seeing Luminato reach this milestone is matched by my profound gratitude to all those who have made it possible: our public funding bodies and private donors, both corporate and individual; our dedicated staff, under the inspiring leadership of CEO Janice Price and Artistic Director Chris Lorway; and, of course, the artists—local, national, and international— whose extraordinary talents and imaginations transform our city each June. Whether you are new to Luminato or a regular attender, I thank you too, for it is ultimately by the interest, engagement, and participation of the public that we measure our success. I hope you will enjoy the Festival all the more for knowing that you have helped the daring adventure that began in 2007 grow into such a vital and enduring aspect of our city’s life.

Five Years of Luminato In 2003, Tony Gagliano and David Pecaut met for the first time over lunch at Grano restaurant. Over calamari, pasta, and wine, the two passionate city-builders found their mutual beliefs in the transformative power of the arts, and thus, Luminato was born. As we arrive at our fifth anniversary, we take a look back at some of Luminato’s milestones.

Every artist who writes a poem, choreographs a dance, composes a symphony or song, or uses technology to add new dimensions to reality, seeks to bring a welcome touch of beauty into the world. At L’Oréal Canada, we believe in the importance of beauty and in its pursuit as a way of fulfilling human potential. One Thousand and One Nights
A Dash Arts Production | Luminato Commission Dramatized and directed by Tim Supple | Stories adapted by Hanan al-Shaykh
A startling new theatrical version of an Arabic classic.
WORLD PREMIERE Canadian Opera Company, The Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre 227 Front Street East 3 hours, with intermission (each part).
In Luminato’s most ambitious commission to date, British director Tim Supple (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Luminato 2008) unites with acclaimed Lebanese novelist Hanan al-Shaykh to unearth the true character of the One Thousand and One Nights. Written in Arabic from tales gathered in India, Persia, across the great Arab Empire, the One Thousand and One Nights are the mesmerizing stories told by Shahrazad night after night, under sentence of death, to the king Shahrayar who has vowed to marry a virgin every night and kill her in the morning. Erotic, brutal, witty, and poetic, the tales tell of the real and supernatural, love and marriage, power and punishment, rich and poor, and the endless trials and uncertainties of fate.
This production includes mature content. Parental discretion is recommended.

Revving the repertory system to the max, Soulpepper alternates seven stellar productions, from classics to brand-new creations, in a week-long feast of theatre. For the first time in its history, Toronto’s celebrated Soulpepper Theatre Company brings together under one roof seven theatrical productions, representing all aspects of its artistic mission: world classics, Canadian classics, creation and adaptation, artist development, and community outreach. Featured are Thornton Wilder’s Our Town; William Saroyan’s The Time of Your Life; John Gray and Eric Peterson’s Billy Bishop Goes to War; Guillermo Verdecchia’s Fronteras Americanas; Jorge Luis Borges’s The Aleph, adapted by Diego Matamoros and Daniel Brooks; and a double bill of (re)Birth: E.E. Cummings in Song; and Window on Toronto, created by the Soulpepper Academy. This super-rep consists of as many as four different performances each day—two in the afternoon and two at night—followed by a community cabaret hosted by the artists of the Soulpepper Academy.

Live theatre meets reality TV and avantgarde visual arts, as a daily drama unfolds within an installation created by Berlin-based artist David Levine. Three actors inhabit a house for eight hours a day, spontaneously going about their business while seamlessly repeating a script by playwright Jason Grote. Every day, the performers loop through this same dialogue, improvising its staging to suit their needs as well as those of their characters. As you watch through the windows of designer Marsha Ginsberg’s fullyfunctioning house, constructed inside the project space, and on a live video feed randomly edited to create a unique TV drama, Habit raises fascinating questions about the nature of performance, spectatorship, and even reality itself.
This production includes mature content. Parental discretion is recommended.
Commissioned by Luminato and MASS MoCA. Created in part at Watermill—a laboratory for performance.

A visionary architectural pioneer creates a responsive landscape to infuse one of downtown’s busiest spaces with astonishing new life.
Some of the freshest voices in modern Arab literature come together for an in-depth discussion of their culture and their craft.
A worldwide pioneer in the fast-growing field of responsive architecture, Beesley and his team of collaborators pose the question “could architecture come alive?” In reply he creates spaces that dissolve into forest-like hovering fields, kin to primitive life-forms within dense jungles and ocean reefs. These responsive environments offer bodily immersion and wide-flung perception. In this new installation, Beesley combines visionary design with high-tech digital engineering to turn an everyday public space into a world of wonder.

Sargasso refers to the vast, tangled floating masses of living matter and cast-off material that drifts at the centre of the Atlantic. The environment within the sweeping atrium of the Allen Lambert Galleria makes a vast canopy, a sanctuary that slowly shifts and floats above the city. The building is no longer an entity of steel, glass, and stone but a participant in a symbiotic artistic event that shapes the nature of the environment itself.

Last spring, Britain’s prestigious Hay Festivals celebrated 39 Arab writers age 39 and under, compiling the anthology Beirut39 with a preface by Hanan al-Shaykh (One Thousand and One Nights). Moroccan journalist Yassin Adnan’s most recent poetry collection is La akad ara (I Can Hardly See). Saudi author Mohammad Hassan Alwan is the writer of the novels Saqf elkefaya and Touq altahara. Egyptian-born Randa Jarrar won the Arab American Book Award for her novel A Map of Home. Lebanese author Hyam Yared won the 2009 Prix Phoenix for Sous la tonnelle and Joumana Haddad is the 2010 recipient of the Blue Metropolis award for Arab writers as well as administrator of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (known as the Arabic Booker). One of the most powerful voices in contemporary fiction joins Luminato for the Toronto launch of a work unlike anything she has written before. Winner of the National Book Award and the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Art of the Short Story, Joyce Carol Oates has written some of the most enduring stories of our time. Now, in a rare Toronto appearance, Oates unveils A Widow’s Story, a poignant, intimate memoir about the unexpected death of her husband of 46 years. In this book, she writes as never before of the anguish of loss, the solace of friendship, and the absurdities of commercialized forms of mourning. Here is a frank acknowledgment of the widow’s desperation—only gradually yielding to the recognition that “this is my life now.”

One of the most acclaimed Canadian designers of his generation, Denis Gagnon is noted for his bold traversal of the boundaries between the fashion industry and art. For over a decade, his concept of clothing as “moving sculpture” has informed his innovative collections for fashion lovers across Canada while also finding expression in the realms of pure creativity. In his seminal 1945 book A Grammar of Motives, literary theorist Kenneth Burke suggested that “the scene contains the act”—that the setting of a play inevitably implies the action that is to unfold. With this idea also in mind, Ben and Watson take us on a fascinating journey into the repertoire of the world’s master magicians, revisiting their greatest illusions in the context of “scenes” realized through the prism of projected imagery and John Lang’s playful score.

Comedy, pantomime, and magic combine in one glorious night of pure entertainment. “Vodavil” was an informal term vaudeville performers used to describe their profession: that hugely popular form of entertainment that flourished in specialty theatres across North America from the 1890s until the 1930s. In an evening of all-out entertainment, comedian-magician Mike Caveney; mime and magician Tina Lenert; physical illusionist Ardan James; magicians and parodists The Great Tomsoni & Co.; and Gaëtan Bloom, master of the absurd, recapture the magic of vaudeville in one of the few remaining venues from that long-ago yet fondly remembered era, the beautiful Winter Garden Theatre.

A “classical crossover” evening featuring one of Canada’s most boldly innovative ensembles—and a new work by Mikel Rouse.
An evening of modern bhangra music—hip-hop and electronica fused with traditional Indian instruments.
Art of Time Ensemble
Delhi 2 Dublin
Including many of Canada’s finest musicians, this award-winning group is renowned for bringing contemporary relevance and context to classical music. Its daring creative interactions with other genres and other art forms have resulted in what author Michael Ondaatje has called “some of the best evenings that I have witnessed in Toronto.” Collaborating with Art of Time as a special guest, one of Canada’s most beautiful voices, Gregory Hoskins, sings original material and covers by Paul Simon, Nick Cave, Gordon Lightfoot, Jane Siberry, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Leonard Cohen, and others, in innovative new arrangements.
Feisty fiddle players, two bouncing bhangra percussionists, and a vocalist straight out of a Bollywood music video present an exhilarating mash-up of Punjabi bhangra, Celtic, dub reggae, and electronica.

k.d. lang Canada
Winner of four Grammys and eight Junos, k.d. lang is truly one of Canada’s all-time greats. From her early-career reinvention of country rock with a dash of punk to her stunning covers of standards by such artists as Leonard Cohen and Roy Orbison, she has consistently defied easy categorization. Over the years, elements of torch song, jazz and even bossa nova have found their way into a style she has made uniquely her own—a style as elegant and sophisticated as it is impassioned. To countless music fans in Canada and beyond, k.d lang is quite simply, in the admiring words of veteran crooner Tony Bennett, “the best singer of her generation.”
This year, you’ll discover an extra dimension to this perennially popular event: throughout the weekend, participating chefs demonstrate how they prepare their particular delicacies—so you can get the dish in both senses of the word.

Free screenings of short and featurelength films related to Luminato artists and programming, with a focus on three main themes. The Process of Collaboration Catch a cinematic glimpse of the creation of Akram Khan’s stunning dance pieces. Get a close-up look at the music of Homayun Sakhi and the Alim Qasimov Ensemble. And catch a rare screening of the dystopian sci-fi film 2081, with an original score by the Kronos Quartet.
A pioneer of Indian cinema in the 1950s and ’60s, actor, director, and producer Raj Kapoor frequently named characters he played in his films after himself, inviting viewers to regard his stories not as self-contained narratives but as acts of self-dramatization. Srinivas Krishna’s participatory installation draws a connection between Kapoor’s use of screen personae as projections of himself and the selfdramatizing portraits ordinary people commonly take in Indian photo studios. A collage of these portraits leads the viewer to a loop of clips from Kapoor’s films in which Krishna manipulates the actor-director’s image, even taking his place on screen. Viewers then enter a photo tent where their portraits are taken in the guise of Kapoor’s characters and inserted into his cinematic worlds on a “photo wall”— a fantasizing reinvention of identity that takes us to the heart of Kapoor’s art and its hold on Indian audiences.

GENERAL ADMISSION EVENTS
MOBILE PHONES
Some of our ticketed events are general admission, which means admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please review your tickets to check if an event you purchased is a general admission event.
We request that mobile phones be turned off prior to the start of a performance. If you must keep your phone turned on, please place it on silent or vibrate mode. Also, please remember that light from your phone may be distracting to other audience members.
If you have purchased tickets to an event with general admission, we recommend you arrive early. A small number of seats may be reserved at general admission events for sponsors, donors, and other invited guests. Doors for most of our venues open approximately 30 minutes before the performance is scheduled to begin (unless otherwise noted); however, sometimes for reasons beyond our control this may not occur and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
Luminato and its artistic and venue partners are committed to providing barrier-free access. If you require wheelchair seating, please advise the ticket agent at time of purchase. Additionally, many of our venues provide other amenities for people with disabilities, such as assistive listening devices. If you require more information on services available for people with disabilities, please contact the Luminato offices at tickets@luminato.com or call 416-368-3100 ext. 254.
ARRIVE ON TIME
YOUNG AUDIENCES
Our performances start promptly at the time listed on the ticket, so please allow sufficient time for travel, parking, ticket collection, and other pre-performance activities.
Luminato welcomes young audiences to all of our performances, free and ticketed. However, some performances may not be suitable for young children and parental guidance is always recommended.
LATECOMERS For the safety and comfort of the performers and other audience members, latecomers will be admitted into venues at a suitable break during the performance. Similarly, if you leave a performance for any reason once it has commenced, you will be re-admitted only during a suitable break in the performance. Late seating breaks vary from performance to performance and some performances (especially those without intermissions) may not include a late seating break. We regret that we cannot provide refunds to those who arrive after, or leave during the performance once it has begun.
TICKETS In order to maintain a safe environment, everyone attending ticketed performances must possess a valid ticket, including babes in arms. For children’s programs, please make sure you purchase a ticket for everyone attending the performance.
BAG CHECK Many of our venues have policies regarding the checking of bags and other larger items as condition of entry and we recommend that, whenever possible, you bring with you only what is necessary.
AUDIO/VIDEO RECORDING AND PHOTOGRAPHS Unless otherwise noted, audio and video recording and taking photos (including camera phones) at ticketed performances are prohibited for copyright reasons. You may be asked to check these items as a condition of entry.
