JANICE PRICE CEO LUMINATO

Welcome to the fourth edition of Luminato. Once again, we are proud to share with you some of the best work from Canada and around the world. Yonge Street divides Toronto into two states of mind: east and west. As Canadians, many of us identify as being from “out east” or “out west,” while as citizens of the world we routinely hear about the differences between eastern and western culture. This year’s Festival offers several insights into the divide between east and west – and how the two intersect. Volcano’s The Africa Trilogy explores the sometimes tenuous relationships between Africa and the West. Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller take us on a virtual voyage aboard a Chinese junk in their Ship O’ Fools. Writers from Canada’s east and west coasts discuss the role of place in their storytelling. And free outdoor concerts celebrate contemporary mash-ups between Western, Arabic, and African musical traditions. Fighting for one’s rights – artistic, intellectual, and human – is another theme of this year’s festival. In 1982, Michael Snow sued Toronto’s Eaton Centre for putting red ribbons around the necks of the geese in his sculpture Flight Stop, setting a legal precedent for the moral rights of artists. More than two decades later, Haydn Davies, creator of the steel beam sculpture tucked behind the Eaton Centre in Trinity Park, found himself at the centre of a similar battle – a story told in 2b theatre’s Homage. Inspired by the words of Persian poet Táhirih, Toronto artist Erika Batdorf examines how various cultures and individuals have sought their voices over the last 150 years. And this year’s The Canadian Songbook pays tribute to the 40-year career of musician and human-rights activist Bruce Cockburn. No celebration would be complete without a couple of divas. In addition to the North American premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s first opera, Prima Donna, prepare to be dazzled by some of the world’s great female artists (and a few who impersonate them). We’ve done our part – now it’s your turn. Over the past three years, our audiences have made Luminato one of the world’s top celebrations of arts and creativity. We’re relying on you to make this the best yet!

LUMINATO: A VISION WE ALL CAN SHARE* The pride and pleasure I feel as Luminato presents its fourth annual festival of arts and creativity are tempered only by the sad loss this past December of my dear friend and co-founder, David Pecaut. A true visionary who did so much to change how Toronto sees itself and how it is seen by the rest of the world, David is fittingly commemorated by the installation Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) | Light Air in his honour by filmmaker Atom Egoyan. Our whole festival, of course, is a tribute to David, for Luminato has made Toronto an essential destination for anyone eager to be moved, delighted, and inspired by expressions of the creative imagination. As always, many of the works in this year’s festival are being seen for the first time in North America, or the world. And as always, most of our events are free. Immensely varied and uniquely accessible, Luminato enriches the lives of Toronto’s residents and visitors alike.

TONY GAGLIANO

My heartfelt thanks to all who make this possible: our government funding agencies, our corporate and individual donors, all the remarkable staff at Luminato led admirably by Janice Price, and you, for participating in these 10 extraordinary days of exploration, illumination, and absolute enjoyment. I invite you all to come together and show the world what is possible.

chair, luminato executive chairman & ceo st. joseph communications

Beauty presents many different faces and is perceived in countless different ways. Yet however widely particular tastes may vary from individual to individual or from culture to culture, and however much fashions may change with time, the essential idea of beauty – beauty of form, colour, sound, movement, or any other artistic medium – has always been prized around the world. Luminato’s global themes reflect not only the astonishing diversity of creative expression, but also its universal and enduring value: its ability to transform the world around us in ways that may be playful or profound, hilarious or harrowing, but that always exhilarate us, enchant us, and make us feel more fully alive. As Luminato’s Partner in Creativity, we at L’Oréal are immensely proud to lend our support to the transforming power of the human imagination, as we know that we are helping to make our city, our country, and ultimately our world, a better and more beautiful place in which to live.

Solar Breath | Light Air (Northern Caryatids)

Works by michael snow and mani mazinani

An exhibition curated by Atom Egoyan honours the memory of David Pecaut, Luminato's co-founder.

David Pecaut

Two artists from different generations of innovation join forces in an installation curated by filmmaker Atom Egoyan in tribute to the late David Pecaut, co-founder of Luminato. Michael Snow, whose more than fifty-year career has encompassed experimental filmmaking, sculpture, painting, music, and photography, is one of Canada's most celebrated Master artists. Mani Mazinani, a recent graduate of the University of Toronto, where he studied under Egoyan, is an emerging artist, composer, and musician who worked on Snow’s 2005 film SSHTOORRTY. Their installation, which juxtaposes Snow’s 2002 film Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) with a work created in response to it by Mazinani, is inspired by the last few letters that Pecaut wrote to Egoyan before his passing.

Luminato First Night

JUNE 11

R&B star Melanie Fiona and rocker Sass Jordan headline a celebration of Canadian divas in the Festival's free opening-night concert. Once again, our annual adventure in the realms of art and creativity begins with a fabulous Friday-night celebration in Yonge-Dundas Square, the hub of activity for the Festival’s first six days. The evening’s theme is “Canadian Divas” and its centrepiece is a free concert featuring some of today’s top female talent, including Juno Award-winning rocker Sass Jordan. Sharing the bill is Toronto singersongwriter Melanie Fiona, a 2010 Juno nominee whose hit singles include “Give It to Me Right” and “It Kills Me,” the latter of which won her a 2010 Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Dancing isn’t just encouraged, it’s practically mandatory (after all, when a diva demands it, who can resist?), and there’ll be plenty of food and drink at the on-site Mill Street Pub, too. You’re invited to enjoy all this and more, as we party in the heart of downtown Toronto – a fun-filled start to ten days that will light up your life.

Dark star Requiem

JUNE 11-12

Composed by Andrew Staniland | Libretto by Jill Battson Produced In Association With:

A haunting new oratorio explores the complex issues of HIV-AIDS in Africa and around the world. A devastating global pandemic. A full-scale dramatic oratorio. In this unusual marriage of content and form, poet Jill Battson and composer Andrew Staniland trace the 25-year history of AIDS from its origins to the present day. This evocative, poetic concert work interlaces such topics as ecology, myth, politics, and family. While this text includes fragments from the Latin Mass for the Dead, the overall perspective is humanistic rather than religious. Focusing on the intimate and personal face of AIDS, the piece will resonate with audiences across a wide spectrum of age, class, culture, and experience. Commissioned by Luminato, co-produced with Tapestry new opera works, and featuring four outstanding soloists together with two of Canada’s most lauded ensembles, the Elmer Iseler Singers and the Gryphon Trio, this inspiring fusion of word and music illuminates the darkness of its subject with the redemptive power of hope.

North american Premiere

The Infernal Comedy:

Confessions of a Serial Killer

written and directed by michael sturminger Musikkonzept, Vienna in association with Ronacher Theatre, Vienna

Baroque opera meets the art of the monologue as John Malkovich portrays the charismatic criminal who hoodwinked a nation.

John Malkovich and Laura Aiken in The Infernal Comedy Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1976 for murdering a teenage girl, Austria’s Jack Unterweger reinvented himself as a literary celebrity with his acclaimed autobiography, Purgatory. Hailed by his country’s intellectual elite as a triumph of rehabilitation, he was paroled in 1990 – only to claim the lives of 11 more women on two continents. Stage and screen star John Malkovich reincarnates this deadly Don Juan – a man as outwardly charming as he was brilliantly manipulative – while two sopranos, their soaring voices blending

with the music of the Vienna Academy Orchestra in arias by Haydn, Mozart, Vivaldi, and others, represent the women in Unterweger’s life: the mother who abandoned him and the victims of his murderous obsession. Part theatre, part opera, part concert, this North American premiere affords an unforgettable glimpse into the heart of human darkness.

The groundbreaking choreography of an American classic is distilled to its dynamic essence in Robbins’s West Side Story Suite. Chunky Move

Brian Lipson in Two Faced Bastard

A double-take on life by one of Australia’s most innovative dance-theatre companies. Every exit, it has been said, is an entrance somewhere else. Chunky Move, Melbourne’s leading contemporary dance company, gleefully takes that adage to heart in its Toronto debut: a genre-defying dialogue on the dualities and duplicities of human life. On either side of a slatted blind, two distinct and self-contained performances take place simultaneously. Each half of the audience can catch only tantalizing glimpses of what the other is seeing, but the two performances soon collide with each other in ways as thrilling and thoughtprovoking as they are wildly funny.

Brilliantly staged by choreographers Gideon Obarzanek and Lucy Guerin, this unforgettable combination of word and movement offers a whole new array of zany delights when seen again – from the other side.

One Pure longing: TÁhirih's search

Created By Erika Batdorf AND COMPANY

A multidisciplinary celebration of the power of the human voice to galvanize the spirit in its quest for freedom and truth. In 1848, at a religious conference in what is now Iran, the poet and teacher known as Táhirih, or “The Pure One,” dared to appear in public without a veil. She was arrested and subsequently put to death. Táhirih’s mystical poetry and this notorious historical event provide the inspiration for a richly textured theatrical tapestry commissioned by Luminato. Weaving dance, poetry, Iranian, First Nation, and African American song, silk work, and lamentation into an intense theatrical exploration, a culturally diverse group of international creators - led by renowned director, performer, playwright, and teacher Erika Batdorf - challenge all of us to find our own authentic voice and the courage to speak.

“She’s poetry in motion. Batdorf is one of a kind… an electric presence.” - Toronto Star

Ship O' Fools

JUNE 11-20

Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller

Come aboard – and participate in the reinvention of an age-old allegory. It’s the last thing you expect to find in the heart of Toronto: a salvaged 30-foot Chinese junk. But its location isn’t the only thing that makes this Luminato commission intriguing. The image of the ship of fools, an uncaptained vessel full of aimless passengers absorbed in vanity and frivolity, has long fascinated writers and artists. Now, in a commission from Luminato, award-winning Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller turn this metaphor into a playful reality: enter the cabin of their transformed ship and find yourself immersed in a meticulously detailed experience of a wandering vessel.

The illusion is a delight in itself, but the cabin is also occupied by a traveller seeking salvation. Every element of your experience aboard reflects the traveller’s obsession – and invites you, the viewer, to ponder your own voyage through life.

“The couple are known for their immersive, hypnotic installations involving sound, images and scuptural environments that engage the viewer’s senses.” - The Oxford Times

JUNE 11

scene of the crime John Brady | Deon Meyer

Meet two best-selling mystery writers whose stories are rooted in the different continents of their birth – but whose appeal is universal.

John Brady

A sense of place has always been a key element of the murder mystery genre. The London of Sherlock Holmes, the Edinburgh of Inspector Rebus, the Yorkshire hills of Inspector Banks: in all cases, the evocation of locale is central to the stories’ appeal. Deon Meyer, author of Devil’s Peak and Blood Safari, has been called the king of South African crime fiction. His new novel, Thirteen Hours, follows Detective Inspector Benny Griessel through a typical day as he investigates a homicide in Cape Town. Meanwhile, here in Canada, Dublin-born John Brady, award-winning author of The Going Rate and eight other books in the Matt Minogue series, sets his thrillers amidst the politics and shifting economy of his native Ireland. Brady reads from the latest in the series, the upcoming A Long Hard Look.

Deon Meyer

Tying into this year’s East/West theme, this literary evening of murder most foul also makes the perfect companion piece to The Infernal Comedy.

“Deon Meyer’s novels explore the complex reality of South Africa.” - The Washington Post

“Matt Minogue, the magnetic centre of this superb series… and Brady’s tone of battered lyricism are the music which keep drawing us back to this haunting series.” - The New York Times Book sales by: Pages – Beyond Bricks and Mortar

ELEANOR CATTON and MICHAEL HELM

Eleanor Catton

JUNE 12

Michael Helm

An evening with two of the brightest talents on the literary scene today. Born in Canada and brought up in New Zealand, Eleanor Catton made her literary debut in 2007 with The Rehearsal, an award-winning novel noted for its unusually stylized language and its in-depth exploration of the teenage psyche. Britain’s Daily Mail called her the “golden girl of fiction,” while the London Times described her as “a starburst of talent ... an author wholly different from anyone else writing today.” Joining her is Saskatchewan-born Michael Helm, hailed by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the country’s very best writers. Helm’s 1997 debut novel, The Projectionist, was shortlisted for the Giller Prize, and its successor, In the Place of Last Things, was a finalist for both the

ROCK THE CASBAH & an african PROM With Béla Fleck / The Africa Project featuring Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba, Tony Allen, and many more

Grammy winner Béla Fleck is just one of the stars in this free all-day musical extravaganza featuring artists from around the globe. Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba

Reflecting this year’s East/West theme, this opening weekend day of music is sure to stir your body and soul. Rock the Casbah includes performances by Montreal banjo maestro Karim Saada, as well as the Maryem Tollar Ensemble, and culminates in a sizzling set by Algerian-born rocker Rachid Taha, whose ferociously energetic musical style infuses his North African roots with the rebellious spirit of punk. The evening segues into An African Prom, which includes the Toronto debut of Nigeria’s Tony Allen, one of the founding fathers of Afrobeat, plus the onstage reunion of two musical collaborators from different continents: Mali’s Bassekou Kouyate and American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck. Renowned for his mastery of the ngoni, the banjo’s African ancestor, Kouyate was one of several contributors to Fleck’s film and recording project Throw Down Your Heart – a screening of which you can catch the same day at the Isabel Bader Theatre (see page 48). Food and drink are available throughout the day at the on-site Mill Street Pub – so come early and stay late.

Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie

JUNE 12

Luminato artists-in-residence invite you to discover dance where you least expect it. Husband-and-wife choreographers Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux lead one of Canada’s most eclectic, daring, and technically sophisticated dance companies. Noted for its exceptional stage performances, and for its innovative “Off the Beaten Track” series, which transplants dance into urban or rural community landscapes, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie (CLC) has performed across Canada and the U.S., and as far afield as Brazil, Russia, China, and Mongolia. Based in Regent Park, CLC has been active in the community during its massive redevelopment, and in July 2009 staged a piece in one of the construction sites. Now, as part of a multi-year Luminato residency, Coleman and Lemieux have been commissioned by the Festival to create a new site-specific performance piece to commemorate Nelson Mandela Park Public School before it temporarily closes, to be interwoven within the Regent Park Street Opening celebration. Visiting spectators and residents of the community alike will share in a transformative encounter with the unexpected, inviting us to re-imagine what can be art in today’s world, in our own neighbourhoods.

“When Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux start thinking about new projects, they literally end up taking dance to places where it has never been before.”

North American Premiere JUNE 14-19

Prima Donna Composed by Rufus Wainwright

A former diva confronts her demons in the stunning debut opera by one of the most distinctive figures in popular music today. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has long been a fan of opera. Now he has written his own: a modern spin on the grand Romantic tradition. Set in Paris in 1970, Prima Donna depicts a day in the life of Régine Saint Laurent, a once-adored soprano who suddenly and mysteriously quit the stage after achieving the greatest triumph of her career. Now, six years later, she contemplates a comeback, spurred on by the unexpected resurgence of romance in her life. But love, as any opera buff knows, can be a dangerous emotion. After thrilling UK audiences last summer, Prima Donna makes its North American debut in a new production co-commissioned by Luminato and staged by renowned opera director Tim Albery, who brought Luminato audiences last year’s sensational The Children’s Crusade. For lovers of opera and contemporary music alike, this is one of the must-see events of the year. Performed in French with English surtitles.

Photo: Kevin Westenberg

One of the great singer-songwriters of his generation comes to Luminato to launch his latest North American tour. To coincide with Luminato’s premiere production of his debut opera, Prima Donna, Rufus Wainwright makes Toronto the first stop on his North American tour for his new solo album, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu. Nominated for Juno and Genie awards when still a teenager, Wainwright has since won two Junos for Best Alternative Album and received another four nominations, including one for Songwriter of the Year in 2008. Last year, he was nominated for a Grammy for his live Judy Garland tribute album, Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall. His one-night-only Toronto concert will feature songs from All Days Are Nights – a title drawn from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 43 – as well as favourites from albums past. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to hear the latest from the amazingly versatile artist whom Elton John has called “the greatest songwriter on the planet.”

“Time takes a sabbatical when Rufus Wainwright sings.” - The New York Times

Rufus Wainwright marks his sixth studio album with the Spring 2010 release of All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu. This is an album steeped in beauty, with hugely personal and deeply emotional songs, each channelled through Wainwright via only his fingers, voice, and piano.

Mark Fast

JUNE 11-20

Interpreting the rose: sculpture as you’ve never seen it before – at the point where, art, fashion, and beauty intersect.

Mark Fast

From the age of 12, Canadian-born Mark Fast dreamed of being a fashion designer. Today, he is one of the world’s most distinctive creators of knitwear – a term hardly sufficient to describe the sensual and strikingly sculptural products of his art. Using stitching techniques of his own devising, Fast exploits the potential of various blends of Lycra with wool, angora, or viscose to create areas of tension and volume as he hand forms his garments to the curves of a woman’s body. It is a deeply personal process, one he has described as “very organic . . . a very abstract expressionist way of working.”

Now this remarkable designer further transcends the boundary between art, fashion, and beauty by creating an installation exclusively for Luminato. Descending from its surroundings, a knit sculpture evokes the symbol of eternal femininity – the rose. Be sure to experience this extraordinary undertaking by one of the fashion world’s boldest innovators.

“Fast (is) at the forefront of a group of talented knitwear designers intent on pushing fashion's boundaries.” - The Sunday Times

A powerful and innovative triple bill examines the multi-faceted relationship between Africa and the West. Three playwrights and three directors from three continents; eleven performers and a production team from around the world: together, they offer a unique and unprecedented theatrical look at the meeting of East and West, from three very different points of view. Harrowing and outrageously funny, Peggy Pickit Sees the Face of God, by Germany’s Roland Schimmelpfennig, probes western liberal guilt and its intersection with a massive pandemic as two couples pick apart the mistakes of their pasts at a disastrous dinner party. The emotional and intellectual connections of present-day globalization are the focus of American playwright Christina Anderson’s swirling and

magnetic GLO, while Kenya’s Binyavanga Wainaina provokes and delights with Shine Your Eye, an exploration of the notion of territory in the Internet age, and a high-tech look at the generation now shaping Africa’s future. All three parts of this world premiere, commissioned by Luminato from Toronto’s award-winning Volcano Theatre, pose crucial questions: how do we see and imagine each other – and what is the human reality of a global relationship?

Join Roddy Doyle for the Toronto launch of The Dead Republic.

Join Ben Okri for an intimate evening of literature and discussion.

At the Jane Mallett Theatre, Ireland’s Roddy Doyle joins Luminato for the Toronto debut of his latest novel, The Dead Republic. Author of The Commitments and winner of the 1993 Man Booker Prize for Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, Doyle is one of the world’s most admired writers. The new novel, which concludes his trilogy The Last Roundup, examines the history of Ireland in the twentieth century through the eyes of a returning expatriate.

In a free-ranging discussion at the Al Green Theatre, Ben Okri shares insights into his internationally acclaimed writing. A visionary innovator who combines European literary traditions with those of African mythology and oral narrative, Okri won the Man Booker Prize in 1991 for The Famished Road, the first novel in a trilogy that continued with Songs of Enchantment and Infinite Riches. His other works include Incidents at the Shrine and, most recently, Tales of Freedom.

EAST/WEST IN CANADIAN FICTION Lynn Coady | Lorna Crozier | Anosh Irani | Michael Winter Produced In Association With:

Four powerhouse Canadian authors discuss how their art is influenced by a sense of place. How does living in Vancouver or St. John’s affect what you write? What does a Prairie writer have in common with a Cape Bretoner? And, in a country of immigrants, what does “East/West” really mean? Edmonton’s Lynn Coady, Governor General’s Award nominee for Strange Heaven, is also renowned for Play the Monster Blind and Saints of Big Harbour. Saskatchewan-born Lorna Crozier’s poetry collections include Small Beneath the Sky, Whetstone, and the Governor General’s Award winner Inventing the Hawk. Novelist and playwright Anosh Irani evokes the India of his birth in such works as Bombay Black, The Song of Kahunsha, and, most recently, Dahanu Road. England-born and Newfoundland-raised, Michael Winter is author of The Architects Are Here, The Big Why, and the award-winning novel, This All Happened. Together, these diverse artists share their work and examine literary aspects of a major Festival theme. Moderated by Noah Richler.

HOMAGE

JUNE 17-19

2b theatre company

Theatre pays tribute to sculpture in the rousing true story of the birth and death of a seminal Canadian work of art. When an artwork has been delivered to those who commissioned it, and has won a place in the public eye, to whom does it belong? And does anyone have the right to decide that it should be destroyed? Those questions lie at the heart of Homage, a play inspired by the controversy that erupted in 2005, when a college in Sarnia, Ontario, citing safety concerns due to deterioration, demolished the monumental outdoor sculpture that had stood at its entrance for 31 years. Originally commissioned by the college, the Stonehenge-inspired red cedar piece had made the reputation of its creator, Haydn Llewellyn Davies, who subsequently became one of Canada’s best known public sculptors. Written by Anthony Black, directed by Christian Barry, and performed in the midst of its own large-scale sculptural installation, Halifax-based 2b theatre company’s Homage is a universally poignant story of humanity’s desire for legacy pitted against the relentless march of time.

“Anthony Black's play is a profound, philosophical exploration of permanence, legacy, the value of art and mortality. This is an amazing piece of theatre.”

masters of magic Mac King | Max Maven | Bob Sheets | Juan Tamariz Produced In Association With: MAGICANA

L to R: Bob Sheets, Juan Tamariz, Mac King, and Max Maven

Luminato celebrates the art of the impossible. Ever see a cloak of invisibility? Can a stranger see the images in your mind? And how can you rely on the evidence of your senses, when what you are experiencing is literally beyond belief? Three of the world’s master magicians present stage shows that will challenge your view of reality. Spain’s Juan Tamariz, the most respected practitioner of this arcane art, performing one show each in Spanish, English, and French, boggles the mind with his minimalist and improvisational magic. Charismatic mentalist Max Maven, once described by Orson Welles as “the most original mind in magic,” turns mind reading into compelling psychological theatre. And Mac King, a humourist with a magical bent, conjures up laughter for all ages. Meanwhile, Bob Sheets, a fourth master of magic, brings his own brand of manic comic showmanship to free street

JULIA DOMNA

JUNE 18-19

Enana Dance Theatre

Julia Domna

Syria’s renowned dance theatre company dazzles the senses with its epic tale of the rise and fall of a Roman empress. Celebrated throughout the Arab world, Syria’s Enana Dance Theatre has also won acclaim as far afield as China, India, and Ukraine. Now the company makes its not-to-be-missed North American debut with the spectacular story of one of ancient history’s most extraordinary women. Born in the second century AD, the daughter of a high priest, Julia Domna claimed descent from Syrian kings. A philosopher, a student of literature and politics, and a patron of the arts, she married the future Roman emperor Septimius Severus – and soon became the power behind his throne. Her life, however, was destined to end in tragedy.

Generously Supported By:

Exploding with colour and kinetic energy, and bringing together the musical traditions of East and West in a potent mix, Julia Domna is both a dazzling carnival of sight and sound and a compelling drama of power won and lost.

“…the important role Enana Dance Theatre is playing not only in introducing non-Arab audiences to traditional forms, but in updating those traditions and mixing them with the vocabulary of dance theatre.” - Al-Ahram Weekly, Cairo

fiction in the age of E-BOOKS Produced In Association With: THE

ATLANTIC

Four of the world’s most prolific writers of fiction discuss the future of their art. Luminato and The Atlantic magazine join forces to examine the most revolutionary development affecting literature today: the advent of Amazon’s Kindle, Sony’s E-Reader, and other forms of electronic book. The Atlantic has long been a leader in the field of literary publishing. Now, as writing directly for digital media becomes a growing trend, the magazine has launched its Atlantic Fiction for Kindle series, providing new short stories directly to Kindle every month. But what does the dawn of this post-print era,

regarded with apprehension by some, really mean for the future of literature? Could it herald a new golden age for fiction? The Atlantic’s first e-contributors are joined by other masters of fiction in a discussion moderated by the magazine’s deputy editor, Scott Stossel. If you’re a lover of literature, this is one debate you can’t afford to miss. Book sales by: Pages – Beyond Bricks and Mortar
