Welcome to our fifth annual celebration of the creative spirit here in Toronto, across Canada, and around the world. My pride in seeing Luminato reach this milestone is matched by my profound gratitude to all those who have made it possible: our public funding bodies and private donors, both corporate and individual; our dedicated staff, under the inspiring leadership of CEO Janice Price and Artistic Director Chris Lorway; and, of course, the artists—local, national, and international— whose extraordinary talents and imaginations transform our city each June. Whether you are new to Luminato or a regular attender, I thank you too, for it is ultimately by the interest, engagement, and participation of the public that we measure our success. I hope you will enjoy the Festival all the more for knowing that you have helped the daring adventure that began in 2007 grow into such a vital and enduring aspect of our city’s life.

Five Years of Luminato In 2003, Tony Gagliano and David Pecaut met for the first time over lunch at Grano restaurant. Over calamari, pasta, and wine, the two passionate city-builders found their mutual beliefs in the transformative power of the arts, and thus, Luminato was born. As we arrive at our fifth anniversary, we take a look back at some of Luminato’s milestones.

Bisi Williams The pursuit of beauty is timeless: human beings have always desired it, and art is one of our primary means of achieving it. Every artist who writes a poem, choreographs a dance, composes a symphony or song, or uses technology to add new dimensions to reality, seeks to bring a welcome touch of beauty into the world. At L’Oréal Canada, we believe in the importance of beauty and in its pursuit as a way of fulfilling human potential. As we celebrate this fifth year of our partnership with Luminato, we hope that every day of the Festival will intrigue, inspire and move you, and bring beauty to your world.
