The Bishopsgate Court development sees the dramatic refurbishment of an existing building positioned in a prime location, straddling The City of London and Tower Hamlets. Through its use of material and form, the building mediates between these two distinctive character areas. When the existing building was originally built in the early 1900s there were far fewer large-scale city buildings in the near vicinity and it would have at that time been one of the taller buildings in the area. Now, with the recent construction of many large-scale buildings to the immediate surroundings (including the recently consented Blossom Street development), the proposed building with its increased height acts as a transition between the historic Folgate Street and the larger-scale city buildings. This increase is substantial enough to mediate between the two scales whilst retaining massing appropriate for its immediate setting as part of the Elder Street Conservation Area.

Both the historical and modern architectural typologies, alongside the historic urban development maps, showcase the eclectic mix of architectural styles and forms in the surrounding area that has become synonymous with local places like Shoreditch and Brick Lane. They demonstrate the continually evolving nature of the area. Bar the modern buildings of The City, the surrounding area is generally comprised of soft, natural materials with textured brickwork and stone from varying periods forming the primary base material of most buildings, creating an overall impression of a muted, natural material palette.

The piecemeal growth of Shoreditch, Folgate and Spitalfields has resulted in a diverse and varying skyline. The map adjacent demonstrates that even within building age groups there is variation; building heights are often relative to the street and their immediate surroundings rather than their age. Where there are taller buildings, such as the 15+ storey ‘Broadgate Tower’ and the new ‘Principal Tower’ these are without adjoining buildings and appear somewhat disconnected to their surroundings. In addition, immediately to the north and north-west of the site are further areas of new development (e.g. the Blossom Street and the Stage development) adding a further variety of scale and height to the area. 8

The structural proposals for the building incorporate the retention of a significant part of the existing structure, principally the retention of the existing structural 350mm reinforced concrete slabs up to fourth floor level along with the supporting reinforced concrete columns below(of varying sizes, reducing at each level). Around the perimeter it is proposed to retain the existing structural double goal-post arangements up to fourth floor (except for the removal of the goal post at first floor to create the entrance atrium, and as required to create new slab openings in the new cores). The concrete lift shafts are to be retained up to fourth floor. From fourth floor and above it is proposed for the existing concrete slabs and columns to be demolished.

This Design is located in the Baiyun Lake Park, in order to maintain the open space and nature in the public environment, the design is based on the fluctuant terrain which is extended to form the basic of the public nature. Building on the hills could maintain the openess for the site. Meanwhile, various touring routes and leisure function are provided for visitors. The inner space is the contention of the shape and texture of the ups and downs to form the space facing the water and touch it gradually. Finally, the architecture become the transition between the mountain and the lake to connect the terrain and lake of the site. 17

Traditional Chinese Landscape Painting

The beauty and mystery of Baiyun Lake are what many people are dreaming as it is surrounded by mountains and crystal clear water. Mountain and water are the most precious natural resources here, which is why people yearn for and love Baiyun Lake. The site of the Art Museum is located in the open wasteland of the middle of the park. What I did was to create a link between people and mountains and rivers in the best observation point.

Superposition of shallow space

When we look at the traditional Chinese landscape painting, at the first glance we see a simple two-dimensional image with little depth. But when we take a closer look, we see a much richer spatial layering relation by the cloud, water, trees blocking each other. The approaches of this project are similar to Chinese paintings: the three-dimensional space distinguishes itself with the two-dimensional transparency, improving the recognition of the space.

Its En-framed scenery art approach uses doors, windows, trees, and even the opening of caves as a frame, to selectively capture a scenery composed of layered formations for the foreground, midground, and the background. This concept has been reflected in this project. The double doors centred in the exhibition rooms allow different views for each step down the route.

The museum is organized on three floors connected by the continuous void of the foyer that structures the circulation. On the ground floor contains all the social functions of the program: foyer, bookshop, restaurant, auditorium and temporary gallery for contemporary art. The façade on that level is very porous, for these internal functions to be in continuity with the exterior public space of the plaza. The ground floor was developed as the extension of the public plaza and thus shelters the main social programs, of the café, bookshop, entrance, auditoriums etc. Section Preceptive from Short Axis

On the higher levels, on both sides of the foyer, are organized the exhibition spaces. The permanent gallery in the East is separated from the temporary gallery in the West, and can be visited together or in parallel thanks to independent vertical circulations, allowing future comprehensive exhibitions as well as smaller capsule collections. Laminar Grotesque is about transforming cardboards into an architectural material that resembles wood. Paper into structural components. Through techniques such as lamination and compression with recycled cardboard, this design recreates a structure drawing out qualities of a tree in particular, the tree bark. Through topology optimization of the overall fractal geometry, an underlying design patterm is revealed. By cutting out the negative spaces of the patterm, the structures can act as light modulators. The amount of lights can be controlled by the pattem density. This design strategy echoes light passing through trees in a forest, scattered and dappled. 29

DIAGRAM Concept

The production of non-decorated which is independently constructed besides masonry webs rather than being merely carved on the surface of continuous stone vaults as ornaments is a process of mechanical construction. These traditional gothic ribs which acted as a linear structural elements based on the geometry of vault contributes greatly to the structural stability in Gothic architecture. The new concept in this program is to introduce this ancient language into this program with assistance of computation.

Calculating the main force flows on the basic surface as well as considering the issues of the connection.

03

After sifting through large amounts of data, the pattern was chosen both for its aesthetic values and its potential for application to a vault form. 30

Limited on the choice of paper for the material, the initial thought for this project is to attempt to use modular design. The component has a spatial symmetrical geometrical feature, therefore the fabrication can be achieved with only one mold. For the consideration of sustainable design, to use minimal material and reduce waste, we referenced the Gothic Vault Ribs structure as the concept, with the help of computer aid calculation, this laminated layered perforated kraft boards not only strengthens the structure but also saved material aspect. h Lab applies digital fabrication techniques to a range of everyday matter, finding new applications in craft, design, and architecture. DRAWINGS Section

Limited by chosen material paper, this project explores ways to create structures that contribute to a more humane and environmentally responsible built world. Strategies employed toward these ends include integrated architectural design strategies, resource accounting through material flow analysis, control design and engineering, and other technologically-informed design methods. Material: Analyse the potential of paper and its combination with other materials to eliminate the drawbacks of paper as a potential construction material. Experimenting with various kind of paper and other bonding material to ensure the final design is waterproof and sturdy. Structure: Inspired by ancient gothic rib vaults, reinforced paper with biodegrading wood vanish, by means of laminating to create a steady form. With control design being a crucial part of manufacturing production, Structural modular greatly benefit the whole design. Fabrication: To design a system and method to produce the design is fast and cost-efficiently while maintaining low influence on the environment. Design: An answer to the question with the combination of the above studies.

This design explores the roots of the vitality of the people in Changting by observing and studying the mission activities in the Changting public space, recording the collage and deconstructing impressions of the old city, and transforming the deserted middle school campus in the village of Changting into an interesting and energetic camp. Theme activity experience centre. In the design, the campus buildings on the base are completely retained, which solves the problem of blocking the continuity of the base by the main teaching building. The new truss system is used to connect the old and new buildings in the base to provide structural support for the added part and maintain the transparency of the ground landscape.

SIMON ROBINSON, DAVID BAGGALEY 16,105m² PLANNING APPLICATION CONSENTED XITONG ZENG, ELENA LICCI

Sutton Park House is located within the London Borough of Sutton, on the corner of Carshalton Road and Throwley Way. The proposals seek to create: • Flexible commercial space at Ground, Basement Mezzanine and Basement levels. • 149 high quality residential homes with private residential amenity. • Regenerated public realm with new landscape design.

DIAGRAM Site Analysis

DRAWINGS General Arrangement

The site is currently occupied by a late 1970’s / early 1980’s office building comprising:

• Ground + 5 floors, Mezzanine and Basement level. • Basement level is approximately level with Throwley Road. • Level 05 appears to be a later extension. • Larger massing fronts Throwley Way to the east with lower ‘wings’ to the west. • Predominantly brickwork construction.

05

DIAGRAM Material Analysis The scale of buildings offers flexibility to change from red brickwork. Urban block is arguably a buff/grey tone block. Change from red brickwork to proposed material palette considered positive to psychologically rejuvenate the site and celebrate the new use. Retention and re-use of the existing structural frame is fundamental part of the sustainability strategy. This strategy was highly complimented by the DRP. A well designed public realm can contribute significantly to the quality of the built environment and play a key role in the creation of sustainable, inclusive, mixed communities.

Proposed Plan [Ground Floor]

Proposed Plan [Typical Floor] This scheme will improve the community by providing better living space with huge public realm areas with greenery and relaxing zones, while the commercial areas on the lower floors contribute to the economy, Most of the existing trees on site have been kept as a feature.. All apartments benefit from balconies except the smaller IBIP units which have a large Juliet balcony. Large communal landscaped residential amenity space is located on the ground floor and level 08. Future internal communal ‘ Garden Rooms ' are proposed at level 08. Our team attended design review panels held on 27th march 2019with planners, the client, local authority, urban designers, and landscape architects. The planning pack reflects multiple design improvements after the DRP meeting. E.g. Vehicle entrance/exit opened up and reused on the basement level, the street level greening has been considered that a hard landscape with a more civic approach would be preferable at the ground floor level. This planning application was granted on 24 March 2021.

DIAGRAM Elevation Design

Exsisting East Elevation Coaching inns have a historic connection with Sutton. Coaching inn vernacular: linear forms, expressed balustrade and roofscape

Proposed East Elevation There are a number of elements that have influenced the approach to the facade design: • Existing Building Details. • Local Context Architecture. • Historic Context. • Views Out To Surrounding Context Eg. Manor Park. • Facade Element Verses Massing Proportions. • Retention Of Existing Structural Frame.

Bay windows and recessed balconies add depth to the facade and create visual interest and variety. Recessed balconies convsidered good approach by DRP

meeting as they inherently feel more comfortable whilst also preventing overlooking. Composition combines elements of different scales [windows, recessed balconies, ‘popout’ bay windows] whilst retaining a common language which generates layers of architectural detail and enriches the elevation design.

Appropriate for the site location and ultimately enhance the townscape.

The reduction of the cost of the build was required by the client. So our 3 people team has produced a VE document, including the material change, the simplify of the bay windows, and reduce the depth of the balustrades. The folding shape of the balustrade strengthens the sturdiness, the perforated hole reduced the material quantity, the perforation pattern simplified from triangular to circular, their diameter is the best for sturdy and privacy within the regulations.

Facade Buildup Study

Given the rural setting within large expanses of natural landscaping it is proposed that the design encourages the landscape to continue its flow in and around the building. To aid this the following sustainable landscaping features have been deemed suitable for inclusion on the project. Green roofing Earth sheltering Locally sourced flowers On-site food production Edible planting Natural swimming pond

The building ascends from its elevated site in the form of two distinct, extruded, geometric linear modules sitting low within the landscape. The apex of each module takes on a strong sculptural presence against the sky backdrop on approach to the site. 7

Two glazed links connect the two modules, creating a central courtyard around which the building revolves. Access to the courtyard is through a punched opening in the north facade.

The glazed nature of the links allows the courtyard to mediate the house’s relationship with the landscape beyond, creating a ‘corridor’ across the length of the site, at all times taking in the panoramic vista to the west. The addition of the garden pavilion and swimming pond continue the corridor, creating further areas of exploration.
