tering myself, throughout time with respect for whoever I meet on the way, then I’m doing the best I can. It makes me excited not to be there, because it feels like the festival is growing up. 18 years old and independent that’s exciting and now it’s time for my “first born” to prove they can flourish on their own. “Just remember, I’m only a phone call away if you need me – Love mum!” (picture a headingout-to-college scenario) Well not completely on their own, cause mamma LungA and the most amazing LungA team will be there to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. Give them a hug or a smile or a sweet comment if you see them, they are really working their ass off and not getting paid even close to what their worth, actually far from it. <3 In this magazine you will also find a lot of interesting material, interviews, articles and art work, as well as the full on program for the festival. Read it carefully and visit our homepage for even more information. But most importantly, I hope you enjoy the festival, each other and what we have put up for you. Ohh and take a lot of pictures and put them on instagram #LungA2018, so that I can follow all the fun from a far.

a staged reading by an american non binary playwright, “Lunchcast” - a gender related podcast event, to a high quality english drag performance, panel discussions, photo exhibition and so much more ... Think that we, here in Seyðisfjörður, in the middle of nowhere, can facilitate the frames for such an important conversation. It has been a personal dream of mine for a long time, for LungA to be able to offer such an ambitious program around a subject as important as this one. I believe that gender, amongst other defining factors in our lives, needs to be brought into the spotlight every once in a while in a safe environment, where curiosity and respect are leading factors of the journey towards figuring out; who am I in this world of chaos, expectation, pressure, power and judgment? And who are you? And how can we, individually and collectively, make our impact on at least just each other if not also our local environment, maybe even Iceland as a country or perhaps one day even the world as a whole, one little piece at a time. I want to live in a world where I feel good enough as I am and comfortable with being exactly this version of myself, with flaws and all. As long as I keep on reflecting and evolving, bet-

03

It’s that time of year again. Its LungA time, the best time, but this time it’s different. For me at least it is, because I’m actually not gonna be there for the first time in my life. It was bound to happen at some point and what better reason than a birth of a child. Yes I am becoming a mother of a human child. My absence makes me both sad and excited. Sad because it looks and feels like this years festival is going to be the best one yet, by far and I’m not there to enjoy. The program is so juicy with extremely high quality international artists and speakers bringing great content to the guests of the festival. This years theme is also something I am highly passionate about. Gender, and all aspects there off. Through all the gender related talks, performances and happenings we will inevitably bring awareness to equality, respect and love towards everyone despite our differences. I truly hope you will be able to engage in some interesting conversations around the topic, be inspired or learn something new during one or many of the events, which span between everything from “Gender in general - a lecture for beginners on how to navigate respectfully in the world of multiple gender definitions”, to

DJ Dominatricks interviewed by Alexander Jean De Fontenay

THE ART OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT Just a year ago, people hadn’t heard of DJ Dominatricks a.k.a. DJ and visual artists Arna Beth and Melkorka Þorkelsdóttir. Since then they’ve performed their unusual, technologically-centred and absorbing mixtures of music and visuals at numerous concert venues, clubs and festivals in Reykjavík and caught the attention of many. Alexander Jean Alexander

Jean: Hi Arna and Melkorka. Who are you? Arna Beth I’m a non-binary artist making live visuals for DJ sets with my partner Melly! Melkorka Þorkelsdóttir

At my core, I am an artist, goth girl and Hello Kitty enthusiast. I am also a DJ. I play bubbly disco tracks as DJ Moðerfönker when I’m not at the other side of the sound spectrum in my work with DJ Dominatricks. AJ What goes through your mind when you’re onstage? AB “my hands are way too sweaty to play right now” MÞ In the beginning it was mainly don’t-fuck-anything-up paranoia. Last time we performed I was wondering if the people in the front were staring at my crotch the whole time—I was wearing a very

the most and getting paid for it! Jokes aside, the fundamental structure of this project is female empowerment. AJ Your performances suggest female empowerment in a male-dominated world and you’ve said that you want people to be a bit afraid of you. What inspired you to work with this subject? AB I think it’s mainly a reaction towards our environment. There is a lot of suppressed anger towards misogyny and the gender norms we are supposed to fit into. A lot of people don’t expect two young women being able to DJ/

films, video art and music videos. I have a background in drawing/painting as well as puppetry and animation. Much of my work combines live action performance with mixed media often with digital manipulation. I frequently collaborate with Bjork and have also collaborated with Sigur Ros, Thom Yorke, Kelela and Perfume Genius among others.

BS We like to get a bit up close

and personal at LungA, as you probably will experience, it can be quite intimate and I think this interview should reflect that a little bit. I’m curious to know what moves you these days? What makes you laugh, cry, get emotional in any way and why? AH I cry from almost anything. The last time I cried was when I was in New York and saw the Jim Henson exhibit at the Museum of Moving Image. They had the actual Big Bird puppet from Sesame Street on exhibit and seeing the 7 foot tall character from my childhood in person was enough to get me bawling. BS How do your own emotional experiences influence your work? AH I mean, emotional experiences as they translate into art are obviously extremely important. But I find sometimes when I try to create through a splurge of emotion, things don’t always work out. More often than not they don’t. Trying to elicit something emotional I find can be a very tedious, technical and often boring process. I don’t know if channeling a particular emotion is always the answer to creating emotional work, though it can certainly help. I see emotion and creative flow as two separate rivers that bleed into each other sometimes. But in general I find it is

BS What do you see as our

biggest challenge when it comes to gender today? And when I say our, I mean us as the world society as a whole. Or perhaps if you want to narrow it down a bit, you can choose to focus on Western society. AH The biggest challenge is expanding our imagination for what gender is, how it is performed and what alternative identities/morphologies are available to us and our children in the future. How do we dismantle the fragile, rigid constructs of patriarchal masculinity from the past, and substitute it with a new vision of future masculinities and femininities? And how do we do it cross-culturally? BS How do you want to contribute to gender equality? AH I guess showing people what modes of identity are possible through my work— both real and imaginary. BS Do you feel we have an individual responsibility when it comes to that subject. AH Yeah, I do. I mean, I think the world would be a healthier place in general if we challenged everyone to re-examine the roles they perform every day and ask them to make more room for new gender modalities both in others and within themselves. BS Will you bring the theme of the festival into your workshop in any way? AH My focus for LungA is to teach about breathing life into nonhuman entities in the practice of puppetry and digital filmmaking. I do believe discourse on gender is both welcome and inherent when dealing with any medium that involves performance, characterization and even animating the nonhuman world. In fact, I believe it is the nonhuman world that has the most to teach us about gender fluidity.

Now as an adult I find that masculine and feminine sides of me are seasonal and change like a tide depending on my emotional state or role I’m playing on a given job. There is definitely a hierarchy and I am way below. It feels wonderful. We can’t tame or gain power over nature. We cannot decide nor design everything around us, even though we try. We went up the mountain the other day and he said to me: “Nanna, you really got it. You have it all figured out.” But I don’t feel like I do. It’s just here all the time, everybody can have it. It’s just a way of living life. It’s a choice. You decide what steps you take. I think it’s nice to be reminded of that once in a while. I experience that people are living one life while actually wanting to live another one. Always looking at others thinking: “Oh she’s got it. I want to escape but I can’t do it. I’m just lost here in Copenhagen, too busy with my work.” For me there is no such thing, it is all about choices, if you want to change, then change — move out of Copenhagen, do something different. I like to be the devil’s advocate around it because I think people are trying to push responsibility for their own actions in life into something else. It is actually quite simple; If you always walk to the right, then for once try to take a step to the left. And see what happens.

THE GENDER TROUBLE OF CLAUDE CAHUN

In the photograph you can see a petite man in a checkered jacket. He stands next to a mirror. His reflection seems more feminine and the viewer might doubt the gender of the subject. The masculine side looks the viewer dead in the eye but the more feminine side glances away Lucy Reneé Mathilde Schwob is the birth name of the artist, she was born in 1894 in France. Her artist name was Claude Cahun, Cahun interestingly was her mother’s maiden name. Furthermore, Claude in French can be understood as both feminine and masculine. This work of art seems to reflect these facts. Male or female or something in between? The works of Cahun are known primarily for her experiments and contemplations concerning gender. The man looks to the world but the woman looks from it. Perhaps, Cahun is expressing her views on her role in society, on the repression and injustice which followed being a woman at her time. She was acknowledge as an artist in her lifetime, but solely for her writing. She had a buzz-cut, no eyebrows and was vocal about being a homosex-

they were in fact rather misogynistic. Cahun wasn’t even once mentioned in any statements of exhibitions she participated in. The main subject for the surrealists were the woman, most often portrayed as a goddess or a lover. For the men in the movement, the woman could also take up the role of a witch, a mystic woman or a kind of femme-enfant, childishly innocent. They became the embodiment of the mysterious ual woman which drew a good beauty and the root of eroticism. share of scandal to her everyday The fantasies of men play a lead life. lover Marcel Moore. Cahun was completely forgotten until the later half of the 8o’s, when Francois Leperlier published a book on her. The odds were against her during her lifetime. As a woman, a homosexual woman and if that were not enough she was also Jewish when the holocaust took place. She has had an immense influence on certain contemporary artists. She was a pioneer in artistic self-contemplation and self-(de)construction. She worked through her traumas that she had experienced for being a homo-

attempt to know better and understand deeply herself as well as her role and place in the world in a different way than most did. She was without a doubt ahead of her time and despite many obstacles she never let the undercurrent of misogyny drown her. Only one of the hundreds of self-portraits she took was published in her lifetime. She considered herself over anything an author and was mainly known for her writings. All of the self-portraits were intended for personal use, for her and her

sexual woman and Jewish with this artistic self-exploration. Her work is very intertwined with her life, her art is an extension of herself. Despite the problems she had to face she seemed to practice a constant self examination and tried to her fullest potential to understand and expand her self-knowledge. Today we can find a lot of overlap between what Cahun did and the things that are taking place now. With the social media revolutions of the day the victims of repression, violence and persecutions find solace and strength in the crowd. Cahun is one of many women that created works of art as catharsis, in other words to work through trauma and injustices experienced. In the beginning of the 20th century it was almost impossible for a woman to vocally express in a piercing way about the discrimination she had experienced. Therefore, it is interesting to imagine Cahun in this time and age publishing, or posting, all of her self-portraits. They would’ve definitely not been private. We can sense what she practiced all around us, now on social media, people are all posting endless amounts of selfies and trying on different characters. But also we are all creating together a space where we can challenge the rooted and outdated ideals that control our society as we know it now. People are practicing the same intimate self-exploration on social media as Claude did. Diversity is being celebrated and people show their vulnerability at the same time as they stand their ground for their beliefs and identities.

spirit of Dieter Roth, a world famous Swiss/German artist who lived his last years partly in Seyðisfjörður. You will find books about him, artwork by him plus a lot of paper, pens, card games and other entertainment to play with during your visit. They also make the world’s best pizza if you ask me - I recommend Byggðarhóll and ask for the chilli jam with it. On the second floor there is a gallery, so check out their current exhibition as well. Tvísöngur This is an outdoor sculpture that you can walk inside of. It comprises of several concrete domes designed to move sound. Depending on where you stand inside it the sound will magnify and travel along the dome’s walls. It is hard to explain, it’s a ‘must do’ experience. Ask for directions —everybody knows where it is and it is marked on the town’s map which you can get at the information center by the harbour.

you’ll pass the only dairy farm in the fjord, Hánefsstaðir, you’ll pass old ruins of Eyrin a former town where about 300 persons lived back in the days. You’ll see the ruins of Þórarinsstaðir and the excavation, where they found a graveyard, two types of churches and artifacts dated back to around 900 - 1000. At the mouth of the fjord you’ll find the magnificent Skálanes bird cliff with hundreds of birds and If you are lucky you might see whales swimming around. Even though you don’t make it all the way,

the landscape is just wonderful and so is the peace and quiet, so I highly recommend this rout for a longer trip.

I’m not gonna spoil it though, I think it is more fun to get the story inside the church or at least when you are in the town. So ask the person who is working there or go to the information center. It’s has a connection to a story about elves and sailing.
