WELCOME A
s the Camp and Canoeing Capital of Ohio, Mohican’s devotion to the great outdoors is clear: We crave adventure and challenge, seek activity and expedition, and demand exploration and experience, every day and every season of the year. The Mohican Visitors Bureau is delighted to welcome you to another year of four-season fun and open-air adventure for family and friends. Challenge yourself to go out-of-bounds – to trek into the wild, to paddle a little harder, and to play a little longer in the snow. To dream bigger, plan with daring, and soar a little higher. Shake off your isolation and embrace what you love most: Outdoor opportunity and the freedom of knowing you’re the only person in sight. Good friends gathered around great food. Long hikes and longer races. Scenic drives and day trips to Amish Country. This year, we encourage you to get out, get active, and get lost in the beauty of Mohican. Here, at our restaurants and shops, between trails and river, you’ll find joy and serenity, serendipity and lasting memories – myriad opportunities to get away from it all, not far from anything and yet wonderfully removed from modern distractions, confinement, and the masses. So, whether you’re here for a week or a weekend, in summer or in winter, let yourself let loose. Give yourself over to boundless freedom and limitless opportunity. Venture out into Mohican and find your fun in 2021.

History
HISTORY Some say that history is a poem – each event a stanza, every moment a verse. If that’s the case, then consider Mohican Country a sonnet: A long and storied tale that spans from recent memory back to the first European settlers, to our Delaware Native American (Lenape) “Grandfathers,” and into the millennia of natural history and the ice age of Ohio, which helped shape Mohican’s scenic beauty: towering hemlocks and the Clear Fork Gorge, the Mohican River and old-growth white pine forest. Indulge your inner history enthusiast on a self-guided tour to the old Ohio Theatre (1909) and the once-home of Phillip J. Black (1856), today both honored on the National Register of Historic Places. Hike into former Native American hunting grounds and walk in the steps of John Chapman, who most us know now as Johnny Appleseed. Explore a working grist mill and cross the Greenville Treaty line of 1795, which once delineated the border between Native American lands and the United States. Are you ready to vacation like a legend?

Venture out to Mohican
T
As they say, it’s not just destination, but the journey there. Although, in Mohican, the destination is outstanding, too. Because, some things you can only ponder with each strike of your hiking boots upon the trail. Some experiences are reserved for those willing to take up an oar and paddle into the wild. Some moments effervesce only as you trot through the woods or fly into a forest canopy. And some thrills, some panoramas, some encounters are only possible when you venture out into Mohican.
Hiking An outdoor wonderland of woods and gorges, rivers and overlooks, Mohican is the kind of place labeled as breathtaking, no matter what you do. But, if you want to up the ante and go beyond breathtaking, then you’ll have to hit the trails! Strap on your hiking boots: Mohican is home to over 88 miles of trails that connect Malabar Farm State Park, Mohican State Park and State Forest, and Pleasant Hill Lake Park. Numerous loops, paths, and tracks wend and wind through land and water, climbing to stunning views and unmatched sights, including Mohican’s famous Covered Bridge, Clear Fork Gorge, Pleasant Hill Lake, Lyon's Falls, Wolf Creek Grist Mill, and the Mohican State Scenic River.
Note: Hikers are welcome to tackle the State Park’s bridle and mountain biking trails. Please give right-of-way to riders on these trails.

Skiing, Snowboarding & More Mohican may be best known for its warm-weather activities, but there’s more to our great outdoors than springand-summer pursuits. With intrepid winter escapades in mind, recent years have welcomed a rise in snow-dusted recreation, including cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and other cold-weather sports. Today, Mohican Memorial State Forest plays host to an 8-mile snowmobiling trail, while local attractions promise skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing.
Biking Load up your bikes, grab your helmets! Mohican is a cyclist’s paradise, where stunning adventures hide along every stretch of the dedicated mountain bike trails that criss-cross our landscapes. For those seeking the bold and the breathtaking, peddle onto the 25-mile loop, single-track mountain bike trail at Mohican State Park and State Forest, considered the best trail in Ohio. Ride the entire length if you have the lungs; or, ride a portion, if you don’t. Rails to Trails has seen several bike paths created around the Mohican area. A 2-mile, paved bike path connects downtown Loudonville with Mohican State Park and the Wolf Creek Grist Mill, while the B & O Trail is a 26-mile route running connect in Knox County, taking cyclists across the Bridge of Dreams near Brinkhaven.

Zip-Lining For the adrenaline enthusiasts among us, test your mettle on Mohican’s thrilling treetop trail: a 3-hour tour – or, shall we say flight? – that zips and soars through seven zip lines, two sky bridges, and two rappels. Mohican calls out to daring hearts and outdoor enthusiasts, bidding you forge your own path and choose your own adventure – to go hiking and horseback riding, snowmobiling and ziplining, biking and paddling.

CAMPING & CAMPGROUNDS A
meditation on solitude, serenity, and the rewards of each, camping offers the chance to get lost in the wild, away from technology, city lights, and the trappings of “progress” – from all those things that distract and detract from ancestral memory and the magic Mother Nature. Surrounded by lush scenery, ancient forests, and Ice Age gorges, Mohican promises some of the best camping sites in Ohio. Whether you seek nearcomplete seclusion or a convenient place to connect your RV, our campgrounds and campsites offer the chance to pitch your tent on a farm, set up camp at pristine parks, or awaken at the riverfront. Experience vacation as you may never have before: surrounded by utter quiet, with only birdsong and the call of the river as soundtrack. Relax beneath an inky blanket of twinkling stars and roast your meal over the fire pit. And, for the rustic-averse: Lest you fear that Mohican camping can only be primitive, our larger campgrounds seek to please with swimming pools, beaches, cabins, groomed trails, bike rentals, and even a hot tub. Yes, we said hot tub. Escape the crowds and travel back to simpler times – or, at least, to a quieter age – when landscapes were larger and the horizon stretched further. Immerse yourself in the bounty and beauty of Mohican and a thoroughly enjoyable camping experience.

CANOEING
W
hether it’s been a month, a year, or a lifetime – when you pick up that paddle, you know you’re home. Because the Mohican is always there: a welcoming stretch of river that wends and winds from Loudonville to Greer, hugging the Wally Road Scenic Byway while carving out a swath of aquatic paradise all its own. This meandering ribbon is the reason – the genesis, the heart, and the passion – for why Mohican is the reigning Canoe Capital of Ohio. Born of entrepreneurial inspiration and nurtured through an abiding love for paddle sport, Mohican’s canoe livery tradition has endured, thrived, and flourished for over 50 years.
14
| DISCOVERMOHICAN.COM
Today, the Mohican River – and we, its eponymous region, parks, and places – welcome the state’s greatest number of registered canoes and the highest concentration of paddling activities: canoeing and kayaking, rafting and tubing. And for you, that means choice: Choice of how and where to paddle – of how fast the river, how long the challenge, and how exhilarating the adventure. We call it your paddle power. Don’t miss the State Scenic Mohican Water Trail, which flows from Loudonville to Greer and hugs the Wally Road Scenic Byway, serving as Ohio’s largest outdoor recreational complex. As you paddle down the river, you’ll see remnants of the historic Walhonding – “The Wally” – and may even spot bald eagles or river otters in their natural habitat.

SPORTING EVENTS T
o vacation deliberately is to actively pursue that which you seek: To chase your goals, be they a sunrise on the mountaintop, a 100-mile trek through pristine forest, or a medal around your neck. The great outdoors is a Mohican tradition – even more so, when paired with physical challenge, endurance, and a bit of friendly competition. Because, while there are myriad ways to get outside and push your body to its limits, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of a Mohican sporting event: Spring-throughautumn individual and family challenges that summon athletes from around the world, to tackle river, stream, hill, and trail. Get off your feet and peddle your way into June’s Mohican Mountain Bike 100, a legendary 100-mile

Come fall, take it easy (or, easier) during the Mohican 5K Run/Walk along the Loudonville-Mohican bike path; or, November’s Fuzzy Fandango, a familyfriendly 5K to 50K, held along scenic park trails. FESTIVALS &EVENTS M
ohican begs you step outside and make some memories – again and again, year after year. Because, whether this is your first visit or an annual pilgrimage, our schedule of events fills the calendar with long hikes and festive fireworks, live music and family fun. Stave off cabin fever at the year’s first big event: Winterfest, which gathers at Loudonville’s Central Park and for 2021, will see frozen creations crafted by awardwinning ice sculptors. As much as Mohican loves snow-dusted landscapes and winter cheer, our events calendar really kicks into high gear come spring. April welcomes the Mohican Wildlife Weekend, a much-awaited family event and celebration of wildlife habitat, heritage, and natural history. Do more than just get up-close-and-personal with your favorite animals; hike our trails, explore Ohio’s natural wonders, and learn a new skill at your favorite survival workshop. Looking forward to the start of summer? There’s no better welcome to the season than Memorial Day in Mohican: Beginning with the Mohican Arts and Crafts Festival – an homage to great food, superb craftsmanship, and the joys of a season of outdoor promise – the weekend only improves as downtown Loudonville honors our troops at the traditional Memorial Day Parade.

Come June, Mohican toasts to the International Wine Festival at the Mill Fundraiser, featuring nearly 100 varieties of international and Ohio wines, domestic beers, and great food at the Mill. It’s a perfect pairing with July’s Fourth of July fireworks and award-winning Loudonville Classic Car Show. Speaking of fireworks, Christmas in July is also in full and festive swing at Pleasant Hill Lake. As the weather transitions into the crisp winds of autumn, Mohican throws a party – or four! Reserve your tickets for the Mohican Bluegrass Festival, an outdoor festival featuring the best in bluegrass. Next up, the Mohican Pow-Wow celebrates Native American dance, culture, artisan goods, and food. Come late September, Oktoberfest at the Mill delivers an outdoor food-andmusic festival, while October’s Loudonville Free Street Fair serves up livestock encounters, rides, and many other iterations of family fun. Finish out the year during December’s Loudonville Christmas Parade, Mohican Castle’s Festival of Lights, and Malabar Farm State Park’s Candlelight Holiday Tour. Another year on the books, many more memories in your heart.

SHOPPING M
ohican is an area of makers – of artisans and creatives, of designers and artists. And one of entrepreneurs: Hard-working Ohioans who serve our community, create beautiful things, and make your stay more convenient, more delicious, and more adventurous. A stroll through historic downtown Loudonville is a tour of independent shop owners, unique stores, walk-in convenience, and an array of all things artistic, from galleries to antique stores, jewelry to clothing, art to flowers. The Mohican area also located at the Gateway to Amish Country and its eponymous Byway, where furniture makers, antique stores, and craft shops line the village streets. Be sure to slice off a snack at a cheese shop and pop into a bakery, where the bakers work their magic on recipes that have been passed down through generations.

DINING S
poil your palate and fuel your outdoor adventures with the tastes, flavors, and culinary creations of our region’s favorite restaurants. From the most casual meal to the finest dining, Mohican pairs your plate with local ambiance, Ohio ingredients, and scenic views. So, whether you want to grab-and-go for a picnic or prefer a table beside the grand fireplace, whether you’re craving stick-to-your-bones pub grub or seeking heritage flavor at a local landmark, Mohican serves up a feast that draws on everything from Dagwood-style sandwiches and piled-high pizzas to locally sourced ingredients and farm-to-table fare. Because, while you’ll love dining on the grounds of a castle and cozying up to a rip-roaring winter fire, we know you also crave casual get-togethers at the trail’s end, quick fuelups by the bike path, and lingering meals with lake and river views. Mohican is the kind of place that aims to please – and where our local chefs are pleased to aim high. Looking for libations to pair with (or wash down) your meal? Don’t miss Mohican Wineries & Breweries (page 34)!

ou heard it through the grapevine: wine, craft beer, and spirits are a Mohican staple!
Distill delight and craft an adventure on the Mohican Beverage Trail, as you explore our budding craft beverage scene: the best wineries and breweries in Northeastern Ohio. Meet the makers and reserve a tasting – the brews, the growlers, the glasses, and the full flights that wet your whistle and quench your thirst. From playful selections – we’re talking jalapeño-laced whites and punny apple infusions – to educational wine tastings, generations of vintner traditions, handcrafted small batches, and vineyardswith-a-view, Mohican wineries pop the cork on the kind of souvenir you just have to take home for yourself. For the more hops-inclined, our local breweries funnel serious expertise into complex IPAs and stouts, lagers and ales, including dozens of handcrafted brews on tap. Refuel on pub grub and quench your thirst at the bar – a brew-and-bite match made in northeastern Ohio heaven.

commitment and cement forever memories, with the talents of our local caterers, florists, photographers and videographers.
MEETINGS WEDDINGS Beneath beamed barn ceilings or beside a scenic lake, under boundless blue sky or on stately castle grounds, Mohican is a picture-perfect, spectacular backdrop for the most important day of your life. A wedding wonderland magical both outdoors and in, Mohican easily transitions from rustic to regal, from nature’s décor to perfectly staged. Gardens in bloom, sunsets ablaze, leaves a riot of fiery color, and landscapes dusted in winter white – for every season and whatever your vision, Mohican’s delivers on alfresco beauty and unparalleled ambiance. With a mind to the inspirational, to the memorable, and to the innovative, Mohican meetings do more than provide a space for your team: Create a complete meeting experience that pulls on team-building, incentives, and training to strengthen bonds and achieve goals. Because, while most meetings begin indoors – in castles and lodges, in conference centers and meeting halls – Mohican meetings inevitably migrate outdoors. Book adventures and harness exhilaration to spark conversation, inspire your attendees, and engage your teams. Try something new, embrace something different. Something inspired by nature, fueled by sunshine, and buoyed by fresh air.

REUNIONS Reunions offer the promise of togetherness, of joy, of making memories to sustain you through years to come. Mohican reunions deliver on all of the above, with stately castles and outdoor pavilions, miles of trails and plenty of riverfront. With so many special places to stay, so much outdoors to explore, and such wonders to experience, your reunion will the kind to please everyone. The only complaint will be that it ends too soon.
