HISTORY
HISTORY New Hampshire’s Founding City, Now 399 Years in the Making
What do New Hampshire settlements, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and American family farming all have in common? They all began right here, in Dover! First settled in 1623, Dover is fast approaching its quadricentennial – our 400th anniversary! During the festive lead-up to this momentous occasion, the city has entrusted Dover400, a local committee, with planning our 400th anniversary celebration. Our ongoing focus will be on the cultures that have helped shape our community: From the Native Americans who preceded us, to the French and Irish who toiled in the mills, and to our newest arrivals from Central America and Indonesia – this year, we honor our shared heritage. Over the last 400 years, Dover has accomplished a lot! Here, in the Garrison City, New Hampshire was born. It all started in 1623,
when New Hampshire’s oldest continuous settlement (and the seventh oldest in the United States) first appeared in what is now the Dover Neck area. Known then as the independent colony of Northam, it would later become part of the New Hampshire province in 1679 and would serve as the state capital in 1792. In 1855, Dover officially became a city. For nearly four centuries, Dover has flourished through hard work, community, and the blessings of great geography: Connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Piscataqua River to its east and the Cochecho and Bellamy Rivers through its center, Dover’s enviable location contributed to the early shipbuilding and farming industries while powering Dover’s sawmills, cotton factories, brick industry, and shoe manufacturing. In 1632, John Tuttle settled on Dover Point Road and founded Tuttle’s Farm, America’s oldest family farm – 11 generations in the making, now the Strafford Rivers Conservancy and Tendercrop Farm – which sells fresh produce, meat and poultry, baked goods, and gifts on the site of the original Tuttle Farm (see page 38).

Continue the thread of history in neighboring Rollinsford, at the Colonel Paul Wentworth House, one of the oldest surviving dwellings constructed in New Hampshire. Built in 1701, during the brief interval between the two bloodiest wars fought on New Hampshire soil, the house serves as testament to the resolve of early area pioneers Paul and Abra Wentworth. For a one-stop-history-shop, downtown Dover’s eclectic Woodman Museum is a place for discovery, wonder, and the study of our common history. Home to a singular collection of artifacts and curiosities, the museum’s relics include a 1771 tax bill to the citizens of Dover from King George; one of Napoleon’s cannons; and a saddle used by Abraham Lincoln to review troops shortly before his assassination. Also located on the Woodman Museum campus, the Damm Garrison House is one of the few remaining garrisons in the U.S. Originally located in the Back River district of Dover, the Damm Garrison was later moved to its present site at the museum, where it greets visitors just as it did over 300 years ago.

The Dover Public Library is a natural stop on your historical journey, both for its wealth of research tools and its own historical significance: Pre-dating the United States of America, Dover’s first library became one of the country’s first public libraries (1884), after New Hampshire was the first state to enact legislation to establish public libraries. The current structure opened on Locust Street on July 19, 1905. Many decades later, in 1983, Dover residents Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird would create the early sketches for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While their home is no longer there, the iconic manhole cover remains… Cowabunga, Dover! For more history on our New Hampshire Seacoast city, take a guided historic walking tour and learn about the rise and fall of the textile industry, notable visitors and residents of Dover past and present, and the three waterways that gave Dover its economic edge. For information on these tours, Dover’s Heritage Trails, and self-guided walking tours, call (603) 742-2218 or grab a map and guidebook at the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.

ENTERTAINMENT, ARTS & CULTURE A Symphony of Imagination, an Ode to Creativity
photo by: Northeastern Ballet. Peter Murray photo
You’ll find evidence of a Stroll through Greater Dover and passion for imagination you’ll encounter art, artists, creations, and creativity on almost every corner. everywhere you go: The world seems a little more colorful and a touch more melodious in Greater Dover, where the gentle thrum of our vibrant arts, entertainment, and cultural offerings resonates throughout public spaces to spark our collective creativity, fill our social calendars, and write a little background music to everyday life. 20
DoverNH.org
Community art comes alive within Greater Dover, thanks, also, to the Dover Arts Commission and its Art Beat Program. Their work connects visual artists with local businesses to encourage public art displays, carve out exhibition spaces, and provide Dover residents with greater opportunities to experience and appreciate the arts.
Entertainment, Arts & Culture
We’re proud to announce that Dover received the 2021 Governor's Arts Creative Communities Award, in recognition of the Dover Arts Commission and the City of Dover’s work to bring art into public spaces, fund performance art, and establish grants, among other efforts.
full performance season offers shows for adults, families, students, and teens, as well as a theatre camp and art gallery. Looking to add a little variety your cultural pursuits? The Strand (thestrand.com), first opened as a theater in 1919, is today Greater Dover’s much beloved, non-profit, community-focused performance center. Here, the sounds of swing bands and acapella groups, independent films and comedy shows, psychic mediums and live symphony harmonize to create an eclectic tapestry that will have you tapping your toes as often as you laugh uproariously.
Come – experience, enjoy, and drink it all in. The Dover arts await.
Looking to formalize your art wanderings? There’s no better place to start than at the Art Center (theartcenterdover.com), a creative community hosted within 6,000 square feet of workshops, artist studios, exhibition spaces, and performance stages. Be sure to check out their events calendar and exhibition schedule, or, if you’re an artist yourself, peruse the center’s calls for art and upcoming residency opportunities. Support community theater at Garrison Players (garrisonplayers.org), a volunteerbased community theater located in Rollinsford that is dedicated to enriching Greater Dover’s cultural life through high-quality and familyfriendly theatrical performances, as well as youth theater educational programs. Take your culture with a side of arias at The Rochester Opera House (rochesteroperahouse.com), hosted in a restored historic theater. Their
And, as art can be spontaneous and creative joy cannot be contained, peel your eyes and perk up your ears: Arts, culture, and entertainment flourish in every nook and occupy any cranny. Live music – jazz and Irish jams, regional bands and karaoke – play at a variety of venues throughout the city. The annual events calendar (see page 32) is dappled with art festivals and cultural events, cherished parades and holiday celebrations – including the Dover Chamber’s Cochecho Arts Festival (a summer-long arts festival at Henry Law Park). With all the traditions, entertainment, and odes to the arts that weave the many-faceted fabric of our diverse and historic community.

SHOPPING From the One-of-a-Kind to the Biggest of Boxes
Independently-owned shops, locally-sourced everything, and a quaint ambiance – these are the promises of our cozy downtown, where “Made in Dover” defines your everyday shopping experience. On the outskirts of town: Chains and big-box stores, plus The Mall at Fox Run, a central hub for all things convenience and pack-it-in shopping. Because Dover is the kind of place where you can have it all, and where we understand that “all” can encompass everything from New Hampshire-made candles to the latest electronics. But back to downtown – not only the heart of Dover, but the embodiment of our independent spirit. Here, there are no chains and everything is locally owned: from jewelry and clothing boutiques to skate shops and candy stores, all are lovingly curated and stocked with locally made, sourced, and produced goods. Downtown Dover shopping also melds old and new: Longstanding retailers, like Jewelry Creations, which has sold high-quality designer jewelry for more than 40 years; My Country Story, dedicated to one-of-a-kind local and handmade gifts; and Noggin Factory, the Seacoast’s premiere destination for quality toys, are hospitable neighbors to newer arrivals like Ryder Street Co., a skate and streetwear stop, and Groovy Witch, where you can create your own magic from their boutique clothing offerings. Of course, tree-lined downtown is as much about the everyday as it is the once-in-awhile. For here, one-ofa-kind treasures are wont to be found: original art (and plenty of galleries), New England antiques, hand-turned pottery, traditional film developing, and all other manner of specialty shops that cater to almost any interest or whim.
Because, as we said, you can have it all. Right here, in Dover.

Many restaurants now offer patio seating and outdoor dining! Because, while we love our traditions – classic brown breads and ooey gooey pizzas, New Hampshire lobster rolls and maple-drenched pancakes – our restaurant scene has diversified to encompass an entire globe’s worth of cuisines. While you can still happily pair your fried fish with cider donuts or a juicy taphouse burger with sky-high chocolate cake, you can just as easily savor your choice of Indian butter chicken, Thai pho, Lebanese shawarma, and Japanese sushi. Even better, Dover’s geography lends a helping hand, inspiring local chefs with New England produce – apples, sweet corn, maple products, and more – and some of the Seacoast’s best seafood, including plump lobster, exquisite scallops (both dry sea scallops and bay scallops), New England steamers (clams), oysters, and just-caught fish, including Atlantic cod, pollock, haddock, yellowfin tuna, and so much more.
If you’re in a heritage state of mind, stop in at Harvey’s Bakery, where the ovens have fired since 1932. It was then that Harvey Bernier, an original Seacoast baker, opened in three locations: Dover, Rochester, and Portsmouth. Since then, his namesake bakery has kneaded, risen, and baked their award-winning recipes, serving up everything from traditional New England brown bread and sourdough to Parkerhouse dinner rolls and what may just be Dover’s best maple donuts.
Dining
The Dover dining scene is a thing of delight – of heritage and tradition, of innovation and daring. And with dozens of eateries, bakeries, and restaurants to choose from, you’ll have plenty of fodder to fuel both your downtown wanderings and culinary adventures.
Keep the award-crawl going at La Festa Brick & Brew Pizza, named the best pizzeria in New Hampshire (New Hampshire Magazine, 2021). In addition to their traditional brick oven pizza, La Festa serves New York-style pizza and specialty pies, including their signature garlic knot pizza, spicy buffalo chicken pies, and veggie offerings. Cheer for one of our own at The Sassy Biscuit Co., where Chef Britnie Lia was named Chef of the Year by the New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association (NHLRA). Chef Lia keeps things local at her bruncherie, which promises to bring big-city living to small-town plates with everything from steel-cut porridge and dropped biscuits to French toast and biscuit sandwiches. We also tip our hats to Blue Latitudes Bar & Grill, schooled in Downeast American sensibilities and dusted with a sense of culinary adventure. Not only do they serve excellent small plates, New England seafood, and beloved pub fare, but Blue Latitudes also gives back to the Dover community: every year, they partner with a local aid agency, prepare a Thanksgiving dinner, and feed hundreds. Cheers to that!

COCHECHO WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT Dover has heavily invested in its recreational offerings – some of the best in the state! Its current project: The Cochecho Waterfront Development, one of the most ambitious and exciting projects the city has ever dreamed up. The development will include multiple buildings, along with townhouses and a public park running along the Cochecho River. ACCOMMODATIONS
Get Comfortable. Stay Awhile! There’s the beaten path and then, there’s the path just adjacent – that ideal (but not oft found) balance of close to everything, yet just far enough away from it all. Because “all” often equates to crowds and traffic and sky-rocketing prices. Those who know Dover, know it as that adjacent path and the perfect base for exploring the Seacoast region: Convenient to the Naval Shipyard, the next town over from the University of New Hampshire, quieter (and more affordable) than Portsmouth, and convenient to the Spaulding Turnpike. In other words, it’s exactly where you want to be. So, welcome to your home-away-from-home – to a blend of friendly faces and easy convenience, with just enough old-world charm, modern elegance, and striking architecture in our hotels, boutique inns, and campgrounds to fuel your inner history buff and please the bargain-lover in you. Whether you’re making a weekend of it or are here for a longer-haul corporate stay, visiting UNH or in town for a hockey tourney, Dover’s just the kind of place to make you say, “Can we stay a little longer?”

REAL ESTATE
At Home on the New Hampshire Seacoast The New Hampshire Seacoast is unique in its proximity to both ocean and mountains. Dover, a Seacoast town, is surrounded by beautiful countryside, while still a short drive to Boston or Portland. More than an optimal place to live, this is a beautiful place to call home.
Dover’s diverse housing options reflect our community’s wide architectural influence. Walk along the streets that surround the downtown area, and you’ll take a tour through New Hampshire architecture since the 1700s: Georgian, Colonial, and Victorian homes still stand and historic mills have been transformed into apartments, offering modern living with picturesque views of rivers, waterfalls, and historic bridgework. The old guard does not stand alone. Historic architecture blends its style with more modern apartments and condominiums throughout our residential areas, especially in coveted downtown locations where Henry Law Park acts as your extended backyard, with easy access to the city’s many cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Newer luxury apartment homes feature upscale amenities, such as a fitness center, dog washing station, and rooftop terrace. As greater Dover grows, more new neighborhoods are planned with careful consideration given to preserving the natural environment while still allowing for quality homes. As of 2021, there are 13,500 households in Dover, which extends to 51.5% owner-occupied housing. The median cost of a single-family home is $417,000.

Enrichment, Education & Erudition, Ahead of the Curve
Greater Dover is a city dedicated to education and life itself. The Dover School District welcomes children to three excellent elementary schools and a state-of-the-art middle school. The district’s new, cutting-edge high school expands over 310,000 square feet, featuring a stand-alone STEM building, an 850-seat theatre, a library with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a recently expanded technology and regional career center. Extracurriculars shine at the high school’s two gyms, basketball courts, batting cages, sports fields, culinary kitchen, photography studio, and more. There’s also a solar power array so efficient that it produces surplus electricity.
Of course, a life of learning is also a life of lifelong learning. Our erudite population is represented by 94% high school graduates, of whom 47% have a higher degree. Dover is just six miles from the University of New Hampshire’s main campus in neighboring Durham, ranked one of the safest college towns in the U.S. in 2017 by safewise.com. A Diverse Economic Landscape. A Welcoming Place to Work.

From a vibrant and bustling downtown to large corporate campuses, Dover offers many options for companies choosing to put down roots in the area. This once-mill town today hosts a vibrant and bustling city center populated with small businesses, shops, restaurants, and residential units housed in converted mills, historic buildings, and modern mixed-use facilities. Outside downtown, industrial parks are home to manufacturing and service companies of all types. The largest city in the Seacoast region and the fourth-largest city in New Hampshire, Dover’s business-friendly community is attractive to businesses of all sizes. Dover is part of one of the most desirable regions in New England and our stable economy makes Dover a popular choice for doing business. The region continues to attract a younger and highly trained labor force, the talent behind both the small and larger organizations that call Dover home, including WentworthDouglass Hospital, Liberty Mutual, and Cognia. Continued economic stability and workforce growth has also made Dover one of the most desirable regions in New England, fueling both our revitalization efforts and the new Cochecho Waterfront Development (see sidebar, page 39). Whether you are starting, relocating, or expanding a business, you’ll find an ideal combination of a positive economic climate and outstanding quality of life here in Dover. dover.nh.gov/business-in-dover

GETTING HERE 50
AND AROUND
DoverNH.org
Approximately an hour south to Boston and an hour north to Portland – and a mere 15 minutes to Portsmouth and the University of New Hampshire – Dover’s location in the region contributes to its status as the fastest-growing city in New Hampshire.
Transportation
A
While Dover may not be the largest city in the state, it’s the New Hampshire city with the most public transportation: Amtrak and three bus companies (COAST Bus, Wildcat Transit, and C&J Bus Lines) serve our region. Working toward our continued growth and urban development, the city has invested heavily in the Rotary Trailhead at the Dover Transportation Center, in its continued efforts to make Dover, its attractions, and its amenities more accessible to the public. Downtown Dover’s Transportation Center is one of three New Hampshire stops on Amtrak’s Downeaster (amtrakdowneaster. com) passenger rail service connecting Brunswick, Maine, to Boston. The Transportation Center also provides connections to taxis, limousines, and local bus service by COAST (the Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation) and UNH’s Wildcat Transit. Both services have routes throughout the city and to neighboring communities. C&J Bus Lines provides motor coach service to Portsmouth, Seabrook, Boston’s South Station, Logan Airport, and New York City; C&J operates from a state Park & Ride lot, providing free parking for travelers, just off the Spaulding Turnpike, at Exit 9. COAST’s bus routes connect downtown Dover with business parks on the perimeter of the city, as well as to employment, educational, and cultural destinations throughout the Seacoast. Adding to its convenience, Dover is also within easy reach of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (the third-largest cargo airport in New England), the Portland (Maine) International Jetport, Boston’s Logan International Airport, the Port of Portsmouth, and the Pease International Trade Zone. The city and the surrounding areas are easily accessed via New Hampshire Route 16 (the Spaulding Turnpike), located just off the Interstate 95 corridor. Dover’s downtown is extremely walkable with parking readily available on street, in the Orchard Street parking garage (which is equipped with electric vehicle charging stations), or at city-owned parking lots located throughout the city. In addition to several other historic and recreational walking trails, the Dover Community Trail provides a safe and easy route to walk and bike around the city, with several convenient access points including the Rotary Trailhead at the Dover Transportation Center. 2022-23 Visitor & Relocation Guide
