Situated high in the Rocky Mountains, Aspen was founded in 1880 and incorporated in 1881. It is located 200 miles southwest of Denver and 130 miles east of Grand Junction, at the southeastern end of the Roaring Fork Valley, which stretches from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. Aspen encompasses 3.66 square miles and is surrounded by the White River National Forest. The spectacular Elk Mountains rise to the south and west of Aspen, with the Williams Mountains and the Sawatch Range to the east. Much of the high mountain areas surrounding Aspen lie within designated wilderness areas in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass, Hunter-Fryingpan, and Collegiate Peaks Wildernesses.

TRANSPORTATION

At just under four square miles, Aspen is a pedestrian and bike-friendly city supported by an extensive public transportation system. When using a car, be mindful of the speed limit, many pedestrians and cyclists of all ages are moving through town.

ROARING FORK TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (RFTA)

RFTA provides transportation services for Aspen, Snowmass, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, and Rifle. Commuters can use Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for a swift ride through the valley. In the winter, dedicated skier shuttles run to all four ski mountains. Go to rfta.com or download the RFTA app.

STARTING A BUSINESS IN ASPEN

As a new business, joining the Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA) gives you a fast track to connect with your community and your customers. Use ACRA member benefits to promote your business and post open employee positions on ACRA’s job board.

A State of Colorado business license is required to operate a business within Colorado. To register for a State of Colorado Business License, form CR100 (business registration) must be submitted to the State of Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and Department of Revenue.

Pitkin County does not require an additional business license for businesses operating within Pitkin County and outside a city jurisdiction. Businesses operating within a city jurisdiction require a state license and may require an additional city license.

The City of Aspen requires that any entity doing business within the City limits, either directly or indirectly, obtain a combined Sales Tax and Business License. The license application can be found online at aspen.gov. This includes businesses making retail sales but also includes all businesses that provide only services or deliveries within City limits. The cost of the license is determined based on the number of fulltime equivalent employees under your business.

The City has authorized sales tax rates totaling 2.4%. The City of Aspen has also authorized a lodging tax totaling 2.0%. The City’s 2.4% sales tax and 2.0% lodging tax are remitted directly to the City of Aspen. The remaining 6.9% sales taxes (State, District and County) are remitted directly to the State of Colorado.

The total combined sales and lodging tax rate for a traditional lodge in Aspen is 11.3%. A short term rental (STR) property lodge will have to collect and remit:

• an additional 5% excise tax on nightly stays if the property is either an “owner occupied” or “lodge exempt” property; or

• an additional 10% excise tax on nightly stays if the property is a “classic” (investment property or second homeowner property).

The Aspen Chamber Resort Association's affairs are managed by its Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of twelve elected seats from eight membership categories: real estate, retail, nonprofit, restaurant, service, lodging, professional, and finance. There are also ten appointed seats on the Board, which include representatives from Aspen Skiing Company, Aspen Music Festival and School, Aspen Valley Hospital, the City of Aspen, Pitkin County, Fly Aspen Snowmass, and Snowmass Tourism, along with three at-large seats appointed by the chair.

DESTINATION MANAGEMENT & GROUP SALES

ACRA holds the contract for destination management with the City of Aspen. The funds are generated by a lodging tax on Aspen properties. Through the work of the Aspen Destination Management Plan, the marketing team works to create community balance for locals, and educate visitors and residents on responsibly and respectfully enjoying Aspen.

Visitor management for the Maroon Bells is coordinated by a partnership with Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, Pitkin County, The Aspen Chamber Resort Association, City of Aspen, US Forest Service and Aspen Skiing Company.

DEAR ACRA MEMBERS,

As we reflect on another year of dynamic growth and change, it is my pleasure to share with you the financial state of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA) and Destination Marketing (DM). Stepping into the role previously held by Charlie Bantis, I am honored to continue the legacy of stewardship and innovation that has become a hallmark of our organization.

The year 2023 has been a remarkable one. We qualified for approximately $300,000 in Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) funds, a substantial achievement that underscores our commitment to maintaining a robust workforce. Additionally, we experienced a significant increase in interest income for both ACRA and DM budgets, a testament to a meticulous review of our finances and the benefits of elevated interest rates.

Our proactive approach to fiscal management was further demonstrated through the savings achieved across several line items, the result of renegotiated contracts and strategic reviews. This financial prudence has not only bolstered our current operations but also set the stage for sustainable growth.

Entering 2024, we are proud to announce that we are fully staffed. This is a notable milestone considering the staffing challenges of recent years and speaks to the desirability of ACRA as an employer and to our resilience as an organization. Our collaboration with the City of Aspen continues as we make deliberate progress in planning our future office space.

Our budget numbers are robust, our balance sheets are healthy, and our spirits are high. With a clear vision for the future, we remain committed to supporting the Aspen business community, our members, and all our visitors with the same fervor and dedication that have become the cornerstone of ACRA and DM.
