ANIMAL TRACKS BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
A conversation with Animal Tracks Executive Director, Stacy Gunderson
PLEASE SHARE A BRIEF HISTORY ON ANIMAL TRACKS AND ITS MISSION.
Animal Tracks was started in 2002 by Trenda Renegar. Due to life changes, she gave it to my ex-husband and I in 2008. It was tough in the beginning. We had to use $40,000 of our own money to build the beginnings of a compound while raising two small children ages one and three years old. To make things even harder, my ex-husband worked in the movie industry and he would be shipped out for months at a time. So basically, it was me, a sanctuary, and two babies. Thank goodness for community. That’s all I can say. Slowly but surely, I met friends who helped me care for the animals. By 2019, Animal Tracks was thriving with almost 100 animals, and educational tours every day of the week, including mobile tours that went to our schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, retirement homes, VA’s. Then the world-changing Covid-19 hit and everything came to a screeching halt. Our mission is to take in exotic animals that need human help for a variety of different reasons and give them a forever-quality home. Some come to us as California Department of Fish and Wildlife confiscations; however, the majority are relinquished from the pet trade, and some come in as injured native wildlife. To support these animals, we educate the public about their superpowers and positive impact on humans.
What can someone coming to Animal Tracks for the first time expect to experience?
Someone who has never been to Animal Tracks can expect to be part of an organized tour, which we offer twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays, and once on Fridays. Advance tour booking is required. We are an immersive animal experience. We have very few barriers between animals and people, which is why we ask for children to be 8-years or older. Most of the animals will be right at your feet. We are
not a petting zoo and do not allow touching, but we want it to be as up-close and personal as possible. We want you to experience what it might be like if you were the animal’s friend. I would consider it a walk on the wild side.
Take us on a day at the animal sanctuary – what are the responsibilities and schedule for staff like?
We start every day at Animal Tracks at 8:00 a.m. as the animals love a good schedule. We normally have anywhere from 5 to 10 volunteers to help, love, nurture and care for our animals. This involves cleaning, feeding, general facility care and exercising our furry residents. Staff oversees the volunteers, handles all the ins and outs of running a thriving animal facility from paperwork to ordering food and vet-care.
Which animal has been at the sanctuary the longest – what’s their story?
Our longest residing animal at Animal Tracks is Monzo, our African serval. He is one of the originals and is now 18 years old. He was born in 2005. I took Animal Tracks over in 2008 when he was a 3-year-old kitten. He was a California Department of Fish and Wildlife confiscation from someone who bought him illegally from the pet trade. We currently have 65 animals, 26 different species. He is definitely one of our pillars.
How can Santa Clarita visitors meet and support the residents at Animal Tracks?
The residents of Santa Clarita can visit several different ways. You can start by booking a tour online at our website animaltracksinc.org. If you have more time in your schedule, you should try being a volunteer. We need help with animal care, repair/construction, grounds maintenance, social media, clerical and fundraising. We promise your time with us will change your life!

A conversation with MB2 Entertainment’s local families and owners, the Brooks and the Millers
PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF MB2 AND TELL
US WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN SANTA CLARITA.
MB2 Entertainment, an exciting and dynamic entertainment destination, burst onto the scene in the spring of 2022. This innovative venture was brought to life by two passionate and local families, the Brooks and Millers, who shared a vision of creating an unforgettable entertainment experience in their community. As avid kart racing enthusiasts and longtime residents, Chris Brooks and Will Miller were deeply connected to their local area. They recognized the need for a unique and thrilling entertainment option that would cater to families, friends, and fun enthusiasts. Thus, the concept of MB2 Entertainment was born. At its core, MB2 Entertainment offers the exhilaration of kart racing in a safe and controlled environment, combined with a variety of entertainment options for visitors of all ages. Chris Brooks and Will Miller’s dedication to kart racing extends beyond MB2 Entertainment, as they’ve owned and operated MB2 Raceway, a dedicated racing facility in Sylmar for many years. This strategic choice of this community as the location for MB2 Entertainment underlines their commitment to their neighbors and the Greater Los Angeles area, ensuring accessibility to a broad and diverse audience. MB2 Entertainment’s diverse offerings include activities like bowling, arcade games, laser tag and private event spaces, making it the go-to destination for memorable gatherings and celebrations in their community.
What is MB2s newest event and/or attraction and are there any new events or attractions on the horizon?
MB2 Entertainment’s newest attraction is the thrilling Omni Arena, offering an immersive gaming experience that’s captured the excitement of visitors. Additionally, they have introduced a series of exciting new events, including corn hole tournaments, trivia nights, college country nights and axe leagues, providing diverse entertainment options for their guests. Moreover, MB2 Entertainment continually explores fresh concepts to keep the excitement alive. They’re actively considering upcoming holiday-themed events, with plans in the works for Halloween and Christmas festivities that promise to add seasonal magic to the already vibrant entertainment lineup.
What is your favorite attraction within the facility?
My favorite game/activity is axe throwing. I find it to be a very communal game, and I love that it is still pretty new. It’s a challenging game and obviously takes skill to get really good at it, but for the most part, anyone can pick up an axe and stick it to the board in a few rounds. It makes for a great date night, team building activity, a night out with friends.
What’s your go-to plate on MB2’s menu?
I have a couple, but I really love the BBQ Chicken Pizza. It’s the best one I have tried anywhere, and it never fails when ordering for a group. I also love the pretzels and queso. Who doesn’t love queso?
What can parents do if they decide to take their kids here?
Parents can do everything their kids do or do nothing at all. Sometimes, I like to come in and race the go-karts with my daughter and do a round of mini-golf, but if she brings a friend, I like to sit outside, have an adult beverage or two, and watch whatever sporting event is on their TV’s or giant projector. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
SALT CREEK GRILLE BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
A conversation with the owner of Salt Creek Grille, Greg Amsler
PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF SALT CREEK GRILLE AND TELL US WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN SANTA CLARITA.
The first Salt Creek Grille opened in Dana Point in 1996. Salt Creek Grille got its name from Salt Creek beach in Dana Point. Dana Point is all about surfing, we’re a surfer beach. Two years later in 1998, a second location opened in Rumson, New Jersey. The next location we all know and love opened in 1999 –our Salt Creek Grille here in Valencia, CA. Since then, there’s been a 4th restaurant built in Princeton, New Jersey. Greg didn’t join the company until after 1997 when Salt Creek owners, McCune and Prusaw, asked Greg to be a managing partner. In 2003, Greg and his wife bought out the Valencia location and are still the sole owners of the restaurant. There are regional differences between the restaurants but what all Salt Creek Grille’s have in common is that they’re all open flame skeet grills specializing in steaks, burgers and sandwiches, all have live music and all locations have an extensive wine and martini list.
Top 3 things you’ve learned about running a restaurant?
1. Treat every customer like you would want to be treated. My wife and I go out all the time to different restaurants and we always make an effort to repeat that everywhere we go. 2. We currently have a staff of 80 and what I’m going to say is cliché but it’s true. Our philosophy is to hire well, and then train well and let the people do their jobs. If they’re good people who are qualified to do the job and you’ve trained them well, then get out of their way and let them do what they do best. 3. Don’t be afraid to change - if you’re rigid and inflexible it won’t work. We change our menu’s out twice a year so it’s important that you are adaptable. We have certain favorites like the pork chops that have been consistently on the menu for the entire 24 years - no pun intended. Don’t be afraid to change some things.
What inspires new plates?
Everything from customer suggestions to staff suggestions. We like to listen and see what we can come up with. We will take a version of something we’ve see or tasted and twist it on our own.
What is your favorite item on the menu?
Probably The Grille Chop. It’s a cured center cut, double thick pork chop, topped with apple chutney, garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. What makes this dish special is that we figured out how to brine the pork chop which means it’s sits in brine water and we cook it to medium without drying it out. My favorite beverage to pair this meal with is a pinot noir, it brings out the plate’s smokiness.
What sets this restaurant apart from all the other restaurants in the valley?
I think it’s the staff - we’ve been lucky to have a handful of staff members that have been with us for the entire 24 years we’ve been open. They’ve bought into what we are trying to accomplish and it makes all the difference. We try and create a family-oriented atmosphere for both the staff and our customers that truly set us apart from the others
What advice would you have for someone wanting to open a restaurant in Santa Clarita? It is tough post-pandemic - but I would say do your homework, open a concept that you believe in and stick to your beliefs.

A JOURNEY THROUGH
HISTORY
TESORO ADOBE HISTORICAL PARK
D
Tesoro Adobe Historical Park was built and owned by noted western film actor, Harry Carey, in the 1920s and 1930s. Over Carey’s film career, he was credited with at least 233 movies. Western movie legends, including John Wayne, William S. Hart and Gary Cooper visited this beautiful sprawling ranch property. The historical ranch will continue to be preserved and serve as a reminder of Santa Clarita’s heritage. santaclarita.gov
WILLIAM S. HART MUSEUM
William S. Hart Museum is the former home of the famed silent film actor and director, William S. Hart, who produced a series of hit Western movies in the early 1900s. His beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion – now the Museum – exhibits an impressive collection of Western artworks as well as mementos from early Hollywood, personal furnishings and artifacts representing multiple Native American cultures. Located within the scenic William S. Hart Park, guests enjoy visiting the collection of live farm animals, a herd of American bison, vast picnic areas, a series of hiking trails and more. MENTRYVILLE
This was an 1800s oil boom town built around its oil well, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Alexander Mentry, Mentryville was home to over 100 families until the early 1930s. Historic buildings still stand, including a 13-room mansion, a one-room school house and period barn. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. mrca.ca.gov
MONOGRAM STUDIOS/ MELODY RANCH
Since 1915, when the studio was first opened for business, an endless string of hardriding shoot-em-ups have been produced at this location. Monogram Studios made 750 “B” Westerns before selling the ranch to singing cowboy Gene Autry in 1952. Legendary cowboy actors, including William S. Hart, Gary Cooper, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, Bill Boyd and John Wayne, filmed their Westerns here until 1962 when a fire swept through Placerita Canyon, destroying the main western street. Melody Ranch has been brought back to life with the restoration of the famous western street and the property was purchased by the Veluzat family in 1990, who recreated an active movie ranch for location shooting. Famous Westerns that have been shot at Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio include
“The Lone Ranger,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Gunsmoke,” “Hopalong Cassidy,” “Annie Oakley,” “Rin Tin Tin,” “The Cisco Kid,” “Deadwood,” “Tall Tales,” “Last Man Standing,” “Magnificent Seven,” “Django Unchained,” seasons one and two of “Westworld” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
RANCHO CAMULOS
Just a short drive from Santa Clarita through the beautiful Heritage Valley, sits this National Historic Landmark where the early Southern California lifestyle is preserved in its original rural environment. Step back in time and explore the diverse cultural heritage and agricultural history of California with docent-led tours every Sunday. The Del Valles were a prominent California family involved in state and local politics during the Mexican period and after the transition to statehood. They were famous for their generous hospitality and for maintaining the traditional rancho lifestyle long after it had disappeared elsewhere. Camulos bustled with extended family members and ranch workers, with up to 200 people living on the property during years of peak agricultural production. Camulos was a noted stop along the main stage coach route—part of the original mission trail—from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. Check their website for additional special events. ranchocamulos.org

HOLLYWOOD BURBANK
A conversation with Nerissa Sugars, Director of Communications and Air Service at Hollywood Burbank Airport
AIRPORT
Please give us a brief history of Hollywood Burbank Airport and tell us what sets this airport apart from other local airports? Hollywood Burbank Airport has been serving Los Angeles County as a commercial service airport since 1930. The airport played a critical role in World War II with the Lockheed Aircraft plant adjacent to the site. Lockheed used the airport to test and deliver thousands of aircraft used in combat. Many aviation pioneers kept planes or flew through Burbank, including Howard Hughes, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart – the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic. Throughout its history, one thing has never changed – we pride ourselves on being Southern California’s most convenient airport!
What airlines currently operate at Hollywood Burbank Airport?
We currently have eight airlines and non-stop service to more than 30 destinations.
Airports often have their own unique traditions or quirks. Is there something distinctive or unusual about the way Hollywood Burbank Airport operates or interacts with travelers?
What efforts does Hollywood Burbank Airport make to minimize its environmental impact and promote sustainability?
In May 2023, the Airport committed to reducing emissions through the Airport Council International’s “Airport Carbon Accreditation” We board – and deboard – our flights on the program, which is a voluntary accredited global tarmac, using ramps. We have a program called, The Waggage Claim pet therapy program. It’s a program that provides comfort and care for those flying in and out of BUR. We currently have 14 dogs who visit both terminals on a regular basis.
How does Hollywood Burbank Airport stay connected with the local culture and heritage, and how does this influence the airport’s atmosphere? You’ll find many historical artifacts here at the airport, showcasing our rich history in Burbank,
including the Amelia Earhart statue near the Terminal A checkpoint – as well as her original hangar on the airfield! It’s hard to miss the Bob Hope bust inside the Terminal A entrance. We also have a ¼ scale model of a P-38J Lightning fighter, designed and produced by Lockheed, between Terminals A and B. Our airport was the original take-off site of P-38s during World War II.
Airports are constantly evolving. Can you discuss any upcoming developments, renovations, or innovations that travelers can look forward to at Hollywood Burbank Airport? The Replacement Passenger Terminal project, known as Elevate BUR, is set to bring passengers an updated – and upgraded experience with greater user amenities while complying with FAA safety standards. It will also meet current earthquake design and ADA standards. Elevate BUR is scheduled for completion in 2026. It will provide the same convenience and easy access that air travelers now enjoy.
