lthough it’s technically one of the smallest counties in the United States, Arlington is a green city and a walkable city, with modern high-rises that are clustered along the sparkling Potomac River shoreline. It has neighborhoods filled with contrasts—suburban tree-lined streets that give way to markets and bistros, and roads that crisscross at urban parks and green spaces. This friendly mashup is handy to navigate, whether on two feet, two wheels, or using Arlington’s user-friendly public transportation—a system that seamlessly connects it to Washington, D.C., and the entire capital region. Visitors blend into every neighborhood, joining locals posting Instagram-worthy pictures of pretty plates and colorful street art. Dog walkers pass by, some with kids in tow, meandering down broad sidewalks, looking into kaleidoscopic shop windows. Commuters stride from Metro stations into gleaming skyscrapers where entrepreneurship and innovation are the order of the day. Arlington is home to residents of every color, creed and kind, all relishing their access to the region’s world-class museums and landmarks. No wonder organizations like Amazon, Deloitte, March of Dimes, Nestlé and many more have chosen Arlington. Come experience the energy and fellowship of this innovative and broadminded community. EXPLORE ARLINGTON’S MEMORIALS

And Enjoy Views of Washington, D.C.

Theodore Roosevelt Island is a forested memorial to the American president who founded the National Park System. The trails around the island offer a peek at Arlington’s skyscrapers, and across the river, Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove honors the American president and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, who were dedicated to beautifying the country through conservation and urban renewal. This peaceful oasis offers riverside views of the urban landscape. The Navy and Merchant Marine Memorial is a tribute to Americans serving in World War I. The sculpture shares the shoreline with the Mount Vernon Trail and has unobstructed views of the city’s skyline. Arlington National Cemetery memorializes military conflicts, presidents, Supreme Court justices and other notables. Arlington House overlooks a wide swath of Washington, D.C.’s significant landmarks. Located at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the Military Women’s Memorial honors and tells the stories of women, past and present, who serve in the United States military. It is home to the newly unveiled sculpture, “The Pledge,” capturing a moment of mutual respect and love between a female dog handler and her Belgian Malinois. The Marine Corps War Memorial symbolizes the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. From this vantage point, three famous buildings line up in perfect synchronicity: the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and United States Capitol.

ARLINGTON

ARLINGTON IS FOR LOVERS

The motto “Virginia is for Lovers” has been around for more than 50 years, and Arlington delivers with an array of romantic experiences. Toast your relationship at Ms. Peacock’s Champagne Lounge or Baba, a retro-chic speakeasy saloon with Balkan bites and craft cocktails. Become connoisseurs at a wine-tasting class hosted by Screwtop Wine Bar or enroll in Cookology’s “Crave: Cake & Sip” cooking class to master new culinary skills. Take in the glittering city skyline from Skydome, a rotating rooftop restaurant at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Crystal City. Pack a picnic and visit an Arlington park — we recommend the serene landscape of the Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial Grove or the Bon Air Park Rose Garden. 6

Arlington was ranked “USA’s Most Dog-friendly City” by Yelp.com in 2018. Rover is welcome to “Yappy Hour” at Rosslyn’s Le Méridien Arlington Hotel and to restaurant patios throughout The Village at Shirlington and other Arlington neighborhoods. Fourlegged friends adore frolicking in the tumbling streams along the Potomac Heritage Trail and Potomac Overlook Park. Socialize with fellow pet owners at Arlington’s off-leash dog parks. Many Arlington restaurants are doggone friendly too. Find pups on the patios of Rocklands Barbeque, Paramount Café, and The Celtic House Irish Pub. Dogma Dog Bakery is the place to find nourishing dog treats.

ARLINGTON IS FOR FOOD LOVERS

Arlington has a roster of rock star chefs and notable restaurants. Chef philanthropist José Andrés showcases cutting-edge Spanish tapas at Jaleo. Top Chef’s Spike Mendelsohn serves handcrafted burgers and shakes at Good Stuff Eatery and gourmet pizza at We the Pizza. Chef Kevin Tien earned Food & Wine’s “Best New Chef,” and you can taste why at Hot Lola’s and Wild Tiger BBQ. Savor Louisiana-style cooking from Food Network’s David Guas at Bayou Bakery. Sichuan spice lovers adore Peter Chang, whose namesake owner cooked for the Chinese Embassy. Bobby Flay-slayer Victor Albisu sells authentic Mexican street food at Taco Bamba.

ARLINGTON IS FOR FITNESS LOVERS Recognized as the country’s most walkable city and top biking destination, it’s no wonder Arlington was named “Fittest city in America” by the American College of Sports Medicine in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Arlingtonians are passionate about their car-free lifestyle and can navigate nearly every neighborhood on two wheels or by foot. Ranking as the fourth best park system in the nation, Arlington has a sprawling network of trails and bike paths offering safe and scenic places to exercise and explore. Start with part of the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail, a paved path along the Potomac equipped with Capital Bikeshare stations at Theodore Roosevelt Island and Gravelly Point Park.

GIRLFRIENDS LOVE ARLINGTON

From shopping, to spas, to afternoon teas and outdoor adventures, Arlington is the perfect destination for a girlfriend getaway. Start at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City to peruse the posh shops under a soaring atrium, then splurge on high tea and champagne at The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City. Among several luxury spas in Arlington is Origins Thai Spa, offering full-service wellness treatments using traditional East Asian techniques. Stop to honor the women who serve at the Military Women’s Memorial, a landmark at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery with panoramic views of Arlington and Washington, D.C.

ARLINGTON IS FOR PET LOVERS

ARLINGTON LOVES THE NIGHTLIFE

While away the evening at one of Arlington’s many rooftop bars—watering holes serving views alongside Instagramworthy cocktails. Freddie’s in Crystal City and The Lot in Clarendon are beachy escapes, and it’s hard to beat the scenery and the tacos from the rooftop of Buena Vida Social Club. Heaters keep it cozy year-round at Clarendon’s Wilson Hardware, and Dudley’s Sport & Ale in Shirlington has a sprawling deck with picnic tables and bar bites. On chilly nights, take it indoors for live music and karaoke at Galaxy Hut & Spacebar. The Crystal City Sports Pub is a local favorite for watching sports, enjoying late-night munchies, and rubbing shoulders with some of D.C.’s professional athletes.

EXPERIENCE ARLINGTON’S AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE

Arlington’s historic sites provide context to the Black experience in America. Begin with The Black Heritage Museum of Arlington on Columbia Pike and the nearby John Robinson, Jr. Town Square, a soon-to-be completed centerpiece of the historic Green Valley neighborhood, settled by free African Americans before the Civil War began. At Arlington National Cemetery, learn about the Freedman’s Village, a community established to provide homes for emancipated and formerly enslaved people. Pick up a cemetery map to visit the final resting places of notables like Thurgood Marshall, Joe Lewis and Medgar Evers. Other local sites include the circa-1791 boundary stone in Benjamin Banneker Park, named for the Black surveyor/inventor who laid Washington, D.C.’s boundary markers. Arlington House, on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, is a former plantation that pre-dates the Civil War.

The trail stretches from Rossyln’s Key Bridge and continues to Gravelly Point Park, where airplanes take off and land from Reagan National Airport. From the airport, the trail continues 16 miles south to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Families love exploring Theodore Roosevelt Island, a nature sanctuary honoring the president who founded America’s National Parks. Visit Potomac Overlook Regional Park Nature Center for a ranger-led talk on native animals and rescued birds-of-prey.

Arlington With Kids

NATURAL WONDERS

ADVENTURE SEEKERS

Children love mastering new skills, and Arlington offers a hands-on challenge for the whole family. Earth Treks Climbing Yoga and Fitness Center teaches kids to maneuver rope courses and boulder climbs. Skate around the MedStar Capitals Iceplex, a practice arena for the Washington Capitals — you may catch the former Stanley Cup Champions practicing there and score a signed autograph. In the summer, rent kayaks or paddleboards at the Columbia Island Marina, and there’s plenty of room to run at the adjacent Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial Grove between the Potomac River and Pentagon Lagoon. Challenge your kids’ deducing skills at 5 Wits, Escape Room Arlington or Bond’s Escape Room, with thematic escape rooms that require teamwork by the whole family. Ocean Dunes Waterpark at Upton Hill Regional Park has waterfalls, squirters and minigolf for those hot summer days. In Crystal City, Long Bridge Park is a family-friendly spot to watch the planes and trains pass by.

AMERICAN HISTORY COMES ALIVE

Arlington’s most notable attraction fills young minds with stories of bravery and sacrifice. Hop aboard an interpretive trolley tour at Arlington National Cemetery, with stops at the Kennedy Gravesites and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. See soldiers perform the Changing of the Guard and visit the Caisson Museum and Stables to meet the horses that serve in military funerals. Learn about the historic Freedman’s Village, a community for previously enslaved people. Take the kids to Twilight Tattoo military and musical performances at Summerall Field at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, and to see the Marine Corps War Memorial on a double-decker bus tour.

GET UP AND DANCE

Reward your kids after a busy day of sightseeing with a free concert under the stars at Lubber Run Amphitheater. Catch a local band performing at “Fridays at the Fountain” in the Crystal City Water Park. Introduce them to American classics played by the U.S. Air Force Band under the Air Force Memorial’s three moonlit spires.

TASTES AND TREATS

Sample new cuisines at Ballston’s Quarter Market, a vibrant global food hall showcasing local restaurants. Learn to cook comfort foods or try a cake decorating class at Cookology. Shop for books, and enjoy a kid-friendly meal at Busboys & Poets in Shirlington. Treat the family to a sundae at Ice Cream Jubilee. Official Visitors Guide

9:30 a.m.

Hop in a ride-share to Pentagon Row to try pillowy Korean-buns or rice bowl at Bun’d Up overlooking the Pentagon Row Courtyard. Then, take a spin through Fashion Centre at Pentagon City with 150 stores and restaurants under a fourstory atrium.

1 p.m.

Inside Arlington National Cemetery is the newly restored Arlington House, overseen by the National Park Service. Formerly the home of General Robert E. Lee and Mary Custis Lee, the U.S. Army seized the house when the Civil War began and turned the plantation into a military cemetery. The ranger-led tour explains how the property was also a Freedman’s Village, a thriving area of community and commerce for African Americans in the 1860s.

12 noon

It’s a 15-minute walk to the gleaming spires of the Air Force Memorial. The stunning, threepronged structure symbolizes the jet contrails behind the Air Force Thunderbirds. The four bronze statues represent members of the Air Force Honor Guard.
