DID YOU KNOW FRONT ROYAL HAS A HISTORICAL DRIVING TOUR? In mid-May, 1862, the Union Forces under the command of General Nathaniel Banks controlled the Northern Valley, with a strong defensive position at Strasburg and his supply base anchored in Winchester. To cover his left flank, Banks sent 1,000 men under the command of Col. John R. Kenly to Front Royal. This force was also ordered to guard the railroad and the bridges over the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River, north of Front Royal.
6
The story of the Battle of Front Royal is fascinating and we’d love to have you join us in exploring our history! The Virginia Civil War Trails Signs, located in front of the Visitors Center, will provide you with an orientation of the Battle. The Driving Tour is approximately 16 miles long and includes 10 historically significant stops. Please stop into the Front Royal Visitors Center for more information and a copy of the Battle of Front Royal Driving Tour brochure.
HOW DID FRONT ROYAL GET ITS NAME? Originally called LeHewtown (after Peter LeHew, a French Huguenot who purchased 200 acres here in 1754), the Town was later purchased by a group of real estate speculators who arranged to have it incorporated as Front Royal on November 15, 1788. Rail service was established in 1854 with the construction of the Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap Railroad between Manassas and Riverton. This line was soon extended to Strasburg in time to become a factor in the Battle of Front Royal on May 23, 1862 and throughout the Civil War. Lumber, agriculture, manufacturing and grain mills provided employment in the region for decades after the Civil War. The origin of the name “Front Royal” remains uncertain. There are currently two versions as to its source of origin. One being that, in early decades of European settlement, the area was referred to in French as “le front royal,” meaning the British frontier. French settlers, trappers and explorers in the Ohio Territority of the mid-1700s were referring to the land grant made by King Charles II, then in control of Thomas, Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron. In English, “le front royal” is translated to the “Royal Frontier.” However, the more colorful and legendary origin has it that during colonial days, a giant oak tree - the “Royal” Tree of England - stood in the public square where Chester and Main Streets now join. It was there that the local militia, composed of raw recruits slow to learn military commands and maneuvers were drilled. On one occasion, the sorely tired drill sergeant became so exasperated by the clumsy efforts of his troops and their failure to follow his command that he hit upon a phrase that all could understand and shouted, “Front the Royal Oak!” Among the spectators was a Mr. Forsythe who had been a professional soldier. He was so amused by the officer’s coined order that he and his friends found much sport in telling the story, repeating “Front the Royal Oak” until Front Royal was the resulting derivation.

SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK The Shenandoah National Park, just outside of Front Royal, includes breathtaking sights such as the Skyline Drive, part of the Appalachian Trail, many stunning waterfalls, incredible views and a theater of fascinating wildlife. When the state of Virginia amassed 196,000 acres of land in the early 1930’s, Shenandoah National Park was born. Members of the Civilian Conservation Corps- a government program that provided jobs during the Great Depression- were given the task of building the new park’s facilities. They constructed picnic grounds, campgrounds, trails, rock walls, bridges, Skyline Drive and over 340 recreational buildings within the park. July 3, 1936 was the official dedication of Shenandoah National Park. This park is popular nationally and even internationally, as people come to see the spectacular sights. It hosts approximately 2 million visitors each year.
8
Its forests, now consisting mainly of oak and hickory trees, are nearly a hundred years old. Hosting these forests are 60 different peaks greater than 3,000 feet above sea level. The park also currently boasts 75 scenic overlooks, Visitors Centers, educational programs, great campgrounds and over 500 miles of trails. 101 miles of these trails, a part of the panoramic Appalachian Trail that stretches from Georgia to Maine. Some trails lead to a waterfall or viewpoint; while others penetrate deep into the quiet forest and wilderness. Any season of the year you sojourn at Shenandoah National Park, you will be astounded, flabbergasted, dumbfounded, stupefied and impressed by its vistas. In the spring, flowering trees will capture your attention with their delicacy and grace, the towering forests will spread their majestic foliage in summer. In fall the vegetation will put on a striking cloak of lavish colors and in winter, a blanket of white will wrap the hills in its glittering glory.

HISTORIC WALKING TOUR OF FRONT ROYAL Please visit the Front Royal Visitors Center for a complimentary copy of our self- guided tour detailing the history of the Battle of Front Royal and the making of our Town. See our oldest surviving home, our caboose, the train depot and other monuments to our rich history.
The Battle of Front Royal was part of a plan formulated by Stonewall Jackson to take control of the Shenandoah Valley. Confederate Colonel Thomas Flourney, working with Turner Ashby, successfully executed General Jackson’s plan of retaking Front Royal, Virginia from the Union Army. On May 23, 1862, Union Commander Colonel John Kenly, fortified Camp Hill with his two regiments of cavalry and artillery, extending in an arc from South Fork to Happy Creek. Confederate forces approaching Front Royal from the south made a small assault at Buckton Depot, cutting the communications between the small Front Royal detachment and the main Union army, stationed at Strasburg. Part of the Confederates remained at Buckton Depot, controlling the railroads and effectively preventing Union reinforcements from being sent to Front Royal. Confederate infantry advanced through town, splitting their forces. A column sneaked around the east flank of the Union line, attempting to force them into retreat without a frontal attack. Union Colonel Kenly, upon discovering that the enemy cavalry reinforcement was advancing, retreated from Camp Hill, heading his troops across the South and North Fork bridges, attempting to burn them as he went. His efforts were foiled when the Confederates extinguished the fire. After repairing the bridges, Confederate Colonel Flourney continued to pursue the fleeing Northerners closely. Kenly kept retreating along the Winchester turnpike and after some miles turned to position his forces for an offensive move and used the heights on either side of the pike to his advantage. Flourney’s cavalry quickly surrounded the small Union force and pushed their surrender after Kenly was wounded.

Leave No Trace Principles PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE Learn everything
LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Do not damage,
you can about the area you plan to visit, including any rules or regulations for trails and parks.
deface, or remove any natural objects or cultural artifacts. Leave them for others to enjoy. Don’t build structures, alter natural features, or dig trenches while you are in the wilderness.
TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Use established campsites and trails, where available. Keep camps small and at least 200 ft from water and trails.
DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY ‘Pack it in, Pack it out’ for all trash. Bury human waste 6 – 8 in. deep and at least 200 ft from any water.
www.discoverfrontroyal.com
MINIMIZE USE AND IMPACT OF FIRES Use a lightweight stove or burner if possible. If you build a fire, use only small dead wood found on the ground and use an existing fire ring.
www.virginia.org
RESPECT WILDLIFE Watch wildlife from a distance and never approach, feed, or follow it. Seal food tightly and store it out of reach. Control your pets at all times. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS Don’t disturb others. Preserve the natural quiet of the outdoors. When you pass horses, step off the trail and speak softly.
Please help us protect the wilderness for our future generations! 25
