HUNTSVILLE COMMEMORATIVE VISITORS GUIDE 2019
Sam Houston Grounds
Welcome to the
City of Huntsville Thank you for considering Huntsville, the Home of Sam Houston, as your destination. We believe Huntsville has much to offer you. This historic city celebrates its 184th birthday on July 12, 2019. The Sam Houston Statue Visitor Center has welcomed over 1.4 million visitors and opened its exciting expansion, the William Hodges Education Building, in Summer 2018. We are looking ahead as much as celebrating what has gone before. Nestled in the Piney Woods, we share the stories of the Bedias Indians, our early settlers, Sam Houston, and all who have followed. Huntsville is a vibrant area, home to: -Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Park, featuring several of General Houston’s houses and the annual General Sam Houston Folklife Festival; -Sam Houston Statue, the tallest statue of an American hero; -Huntsville State Park and the Sam Houston National Forest; -one of the first seven Cultural Districts named by the Texas Arts Commission; -many museums and historic locations such as the HEARTS Veterans Museum, Prison Museum, the Wynne Home Arts Center, Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center, and the Gibbs-Powell Home County Museum; -Sam Houston State University’s Southland Conference Football Championship team and NCAA Division 1 playoff teams and semifinalists; -Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the only state agency headquartered outside Austin; -and a whole lot more! Our residents and business owners welcome you and hope you will take the time to explore all we have. You will find many opportunities to enjoy cultural and social events, historic museums and sites, and the great outdoors. Our Tourism Department would love to help you decide what to see and do, and hear your feedback. We know you will find a lot of special memories to take with you. We look forward to you spending some time with us in Huntsville, where, as Sam Houston said, “a warm welcome awaits!” Sincerely,
Andy Brauninger Mayor Andy Brauninger

Austin Hall
Directly across the street is the
Historic Austin College Building, on top of Capitol Hill on the beautiful Sam Houston State University campus. Austin College is the oldest educational building in use west of the Mississippi River. Chartered in 1849 by the Presbyterian Church, it housed the state’s first law school. Today it is a part of a thriving dynamic university! To end the day, the Oakwood Cemetery, near downtown, is the final resting place of General Sam Houston, as well as many other people of historical prominence, including 123 confederate soldiers.
Houston’s gravesite marker is featured on the Huntsville Arts driving tour and the entire cemetery has a walking tour of its own. Renowned Italian sculptor Pompeo Coppini carved Houston on his horse in gleaming white marble. It has an inscription by Andrew Jackson –“THE WORLD WILL TAKE CARE OF HOUSTON’S FAME”.

DAY 2 – Culture & Arts Tours
Start your day at the Wynne Home Arts Center located near downtown on a picturesque 1.5 acre site along the banks of Town Creek. The Wynne Home consists of four areas; Main gallery for permanent and rotating exhibits, classroom instruction space; ceramics studio and kiln and a gift and souvenir shop. Take in the newest exhibit or participate in an art class. The Wynne Home also includes a visitor center to gather information for your stay in Huntsville. Sam Houston’s Gravesite
The downtown square paints a picture of rich history, one that visitors can experience in a walking tour of the area. Tromp L’oeil Murals on the downtown square are unique and extraordinary. They were created by world-renowned artist Richard Haas of New York. The tromp l’oeil (trick the eye) paintings was executed by local and national artisans. While there is a mural with Sam Houston on the east side of the square, one of the most notable images is that of Huddie “Belly” Ledbetter on the west front of a commercial building on Sam Houston Avenue; Ledbetter was the composer of such blues classics as Midnight Special, Rock Island Love and Good Night Irene. He served time in the Texas Prison System.

enthusiast and more tours… The Texas Prison Museum is located just off Interstate 45 North. Interesting artifacts – from inmate arts and crafts, confiscated weapons, photographs, model of a prison unit, and the infamous electric chair, Old Sparky, can be found here. Visitors also step inside a model of a typical prison cell. On the grounds of the museum is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Monument and Sesquicentennial Plaza, a tribute to Texans who have made the prison system one of the world’s best throughout its 150-year history.
After visiting the prison museum your curiosity will spark you to take a driving tour of the Texas Prison System. This tour features the seven prison units located in the county. Also on the tour is the old prison rodeo arena made famous in the 1980s movie Urban Cowboy. The Huntsville Walls Unit is probably the largest international draw in the city. The unit dates back to 1849 and housed the first Texas prisoners including such notables as Clyde Barrow, David Crosby, and John Wesley Hardin. The unit is the site of the death chamber where the State of Texas carries out every execution. It was featured in The Life of David Gale starring Kate Winslet and Kevin Spacey. Visitors can take a walking or driving tour of the site, learning about its modern controversies and its old time tales of criminal legends. The HEARTS Veterans Museum of Texas is currently located on Hwy 75 North, the facility houses artifacts and wartime memorabilia from each of this nation’s contemporary wars. Designed as a living history museum, veterans from

ATHLETICS
SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY
ATHLETICS
am Houston State University Athletics is a Southland Conference powerhouse that is home to 17 D1 athletic teams and continues to grow as an athletic department. The Bearkats have nine sporting facilities and they are pursuing renovations and the building of more facilities to enhance the student-athlete experience. SHSU Women’s Tennis is next up, getting a new tennis complex that will be built in front of Don Sanders Stadium next year. The SHSU athletic department will also be adding “Sand Volleyball” to their athletic teams and will have Sand volleyball courts built next to the new Tennis Complex. Due to the great facilities, SHSU athletics regularly hosts events outside of their own that include little league, high school, and other college sporting events. Sam Houston Athletics has been around since 1906 and has accumulated over 80 conference championships throughout the department.
