Avoid Foundation Fail! Words by ALEESA HALL Foundation is one of those things, isn’t it? It’s either right or wrong. Being a make-up artist, I can spot a “wrong” foundation a mile off. Fake tanners can be the biggest offenders with the wearing of their natural skin coloured foundation instead of introducing a more bronzed foundation colour to the mix. Have a good hard look at yourself and ask the question: Do I look better? Or do I look like I could be performing in a circus or nightclub? Have I aged since wearing this foundation? The purpose of foundation is to even out your skin-tone, cover flaws and to improve the appearance of your skin texture. If these boxes aren’t ticked, move on. Now, if your skin is in bad nick (dry, crusty, etc.), buying a foundation that is going to turn you into a 20 year old super-model is quite an ask. Good, daily skincare is the first step in ensuring the foundation you choose will enhance your skin. If you have a dry visages – avoid powder-based foundations. Choose rich liquid formulas that add lustre to the skin while oily faces – avoid dewy bases (your natural oils will do that for you) and opt for more matte textures.

It is important to gently exfoliate the skin regularly to remove the dead skin cells and to allow for other serums and moisturises to sink through to the deeper layers of the skin - it also helps to prevent blocked pores and breakouts. However, don’t always apply a granular scrub; look for gentle AHA and BHA exfoliants that are chemical as it means there are no granules. Apply just like a serum and that’s it!

Sunscreen
I believe one of the most important skincare products on the market is sunscreen. For those worried of pigmentation and premature ageing from the harmful effects of the UVA and UVB rays, sunscreen is a must! For everyday use look for a lightweight moisturizer that has an SPF factor above 15+. I love sunscreens that have the ingredient zinc as it also calming and healing for all skin types. Look for a sunscreen that has been formulated in Australia so you know it works with our climate and harsh sun. Also, don’t forget to place sunscreen on your décolletage and back on hands! We often forget these particular areas of the body are the first tell tale signs of ageing.
When the weather warms up, it’s time to place your ‘thicker and more nourishing’ moisturisers in the cupboard and opt for a lightweight moisturiser, which is still hydrating. For spring and summer, apply Vitamin C every morning after cleansing. Great antioxidant to fight environmental factors like the sun, grim and dirt as well as calming for the skin. NOTE- Be careful of skincare products that contain vitamin A, during warmer months and ONLY apply in the evening. Vitamin A is a very important anti aging ingredient in skincare for collagen renewal and other fantastic benefits but because of the exfoliating and collagen process the skin can be more sensitised. Always apply sunscreen in the morning and remember to reapply as vitamin A and citrus ingredients may cause photosensitivity to your skin including pigmentation and your skin may tend to burn more quickly if no protection is applied.

You should also take into consideration specific issues that your skin has, such as acne. What’s the best advice you can give when it comes to looking after your skin? If you don’t already have them, you will need to buy a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, defoliant, cotton pads & a face mask. Use an enzyme cleanser on a daily basis. Hydrate your skin with a serum to quench your skin’s thirst and protect your skin always! Last of all stick to your routine! Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you’re using.

We wanted to find out how we can celebrity-worth hair for ourselves so we tracked down Sydney-based celebrity hairstylist Alex P F Jackson to find out their secret. Alex says, “With the change in seasons, we may start to find our hair isn’t in the condition we’d like it to be; so eating a healthy diet, which is full of nutrients and vitamins, is the best way to keep your hair and skin looking and feeling healthy, no matter what time of the year it is”. To ensure your diet remains healthy, there are a number of vitamins that are absolutely necessary. Alex P F Jackson’s advice includes the necessary vitamins along with the benefits they have on maintaining healthy hair. A balanced diet will give your hair (and body) the nutrition it needs.
The essentials
Vitamin A (e.g. in apricots) One of the most important vitamins you need to achieve
strong and healthy hair. It’s the vitamin that does the most amount of work. It strengthens and thickens your hair, allowing it to grow longer and prevents it from breaking as often.
Vitamin B
(e.g. in eggs) Ensuring you get enough of this helps reduce hair loss and slows the greying process. It also speeds up hair growth and gives it more shine.
Vitamin E
(e.g. in almonds) Vitamin E is an essential part of your diet. It maintains healthy hair by helping blood circulation, which can lead to a healthier scalp. If you have curly hair, this vitamin will help you reduce your frizz and achieve a gorgeous head of curls. Water This is an essential part of any diet but drinking enough water keeps skin and hair hydrated from within.
Folic acid
(e.g. in white rice) This is another essential that can prevent grey hair. Folic acid makes your hair thicker, shinier and stronger.
Antioxidants
(e.g. in pomegranates) Getting enough antioxidants in your body helps to condition and moisturise the sebum in the scalp. Sebum (the oil your scalp produces) helps keep your skin and hair from becoming too dry and is a great defence against wind and water. So there you go, while we might not have Miranda Kerr’s face or body, at least we can have hair that even she might be jealous of!

Method Throw all the ingredients, apart from the extra desiccated coconut into the blender or food processor and process until the dates are fully combined. If the mixture is too dry you can add some water to ensure all the ingredients blend well. Roll into balls and sprinkle with the remaining desiccated coconut. Freeze for an hour before serving. Our Make-up Artist in the know spills the beans on how to treat your Makeup Artist or Hair Stylist on the big day to ensure everything can go as soon as possible. Don’t forget your Makeup Artist has been there before, they have seen a million wedding preparations so let them get you relaxed & ready on the big day. ‘As most make-up artists will tell you, we are neck-deep in Bridal season. And don’t get me wrong, I lurve me a wedding – being a part of a special occasion, making everyone look amazing and receiving much adulation for doing so; but then there’s also the times of ‘putting-out-fires’ with soothing words of reason, garnished from eons of experience. I did a wedding last week that required these very skills, yet even despite my calm demeanor and the learned ability, when the poop-hitsthe-fan, to just switch off (to enter the tranquil place – where the only thing that really matters is blending that eye-shadow to absolute perfection). But I have to hand it to these crazy-cats, they nearly pushed this cool customer over; and I’m pretty sure the 58yr old Hungarian hairdresser is now a brickies labourer somewhere far, far away.
Staking Your
Territory You can’t really tell as you enter the family home, if and when things will go awry. Yes, you may have been dealing with a nervy control-freakbride for some months, yet The Day arrives and you are pleasantly surprised that she’s either worn her ‘bitch’ out, or she’s on Valium but she appears calm if not jovial. Then there is the bride who appeared normal at the outset – had a handle on everything – yet on The Day, has now grown a second head and is a total warlord. Another indication on how things could go is where they ‘put’ you (the most bloody important person of the day). Having had a trial the brideto-be soon realises by looking upon your vast kit, that it’s going to take a truckload of make-up to make her and friends look decent enough to walk down that aisle. So, it always surprises me when I arrive and I’m ushered into a bathroom or brought in it to a dusty office with no light, and nowhere to set up. Hello! My 40 kilo kit needs to be spread out before me like a sprawling banquet, so I can pick at it accordingly. You’ll look better for it.

Food &
Beverages When you go to work, for say 6-8 hours, you quite like the prospect of having lunch. A little coffee perhaps, to get you in the mood. It’s exactly the same with us. Make-up and hair people like to eat, drink coffee and anything else that’s going. I remember doing a wedding at an absolute mansion. The bride’s timing was way out. She did what I always recommend brides not to do: go to a hair salon to get the hair-did. It’s imperative, unless the salon is in walking distance from where you are getting ready, that trades come to you on this most memorable day. Traffic and other variables can turn the exercise of visiting a hairdresser into a giant pooh-fight. Anyway, getting back to bridey, (who allocated only 2 hrs to do 8 people), her housekeeper kindly brought me out a plate of food and water, but when I heard that glorious sound: the pop of a champagne bottle, and saw a plethora of crystal flutes being filled with the happy bubbles of pink Moet, I naturally waited with bated breath for mine. And wait was all I did as I threw on make-up in record speed, watching everyone around me necking Moet. I mean, I could smell it and was literally chomping-at-the bit for even a mouthful. Here’s a tip: Your make-up artist works better with a glass or two of Champagne. Don’t be stingy with the bubbles. It looks bad.
Fake Tan
Despite my warnings to Bridey at the trial, who may have a delightful peaches and cream complexion, I will inevitably turn up on The Day to find the entire bridal party the colour of a pole-dancer. In fact, it’s safe to say, I have done more tandori-coloured bridal parties than eaten hot lunches. I now bring a selection of yellowy/orange foundations to tackle this very issue. While at the wedding that pushed-me-to-my-limits of two

After giving me the A-Z of what she didn’t want, I asked her out of interest, if she were fake-tanned as she did look naturally olive (it was a dollar each way). “Yes I am. I’ll show you my natural colour,”she said as she heaved herself off the chair. Standing up, she then turned around, pulled down her elasticised pants and for lack of a better word pointed to her “crack” and said: “See there, that’s my natural colour”. The night terrors continue to this day.
Timing
Brides like to know the sequence of events, and this is important. A schedule has to be co-ordinated so everyone gets done before the arrival of the photographer. Nothing pisses off a photographer more than
when he arrives at the hour he confirmed, and the entire bridal party are still in their ‘jammies’ with hair pin-curled and half made-up. So, yes making a schedule is essential. However, like any project, flexibility is crucial because things rarely go precisely to plan especially when there are 5 bridesmaids involved. So, circling the hairdresser who may be a chain-smoking Hungarian from several generations ago and ranting: “That’s it. I’m not joking now. You have to finish now, o.k! You have got to start the next bridesmaid.” This behaviour is counter-productive and will result in said hairdresser creating more average ‘hairdos’ in longer time, which equals tension, and tears.
