Prior to the 2024 LUXE Global Gala, we had the privilege of sitting down with Mr. Nicolaas Houwert, General Manager of InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest, a landmark hotel with a rich history and a reputation for luxury. In this conversation, we delve into the storied past of the Athénée Palace, its transformation into a premier destination, and the exciting future it holds. Firstly, could you tell us more about the history of InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest?
The Athénée Palace, constructed in 1914, gained notoriety as a “den of spies” from both the East and West during World War II and the Cold War. In 1948, the Romanian Communist government nationalized the hotel, installing surveillance devices in every room and allegedly employing numerous informers. After the Romanian Revolution, the hotel underwent extensive renovations and reopened, becoming one of the first internationally branded 5-star hotels in 1997. Following another complete renovation during 2021-2022, the Athénée Palace was rebranded as part of InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in January 2023.

Can you tell us about your career path and what led you to become the General Manager of InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest?
From an early age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in hospitality. While studying at the Hotelschool the Hague in the Netherlands, my passion for luxury hotels was ignited during my trainee position at the President Wilson, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Geneva, Switzerland. I then spent a year as an F&B Management Trainee at the Hotel Hershey in Pennsylvania, USA. Upon returning to the Netherlands, I began my professional career with Hilton Hotels & Resorts. My career subsequently took me from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Copenhagen, Paris, Belgrade, and London. I progressed through various operational roles, ultimately becoming a General Manager and opening or converting four hotels while working in nine different countries. When IHG approached me to lead the rebranding of the Athénée Palace to InterContinental, I was immediately intrigued, as it aligned perfectly with my aspiration to work again in a luxury hotel environment.
What are your favourite aspects of InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest?
The glamourous setting of the lobby, guest rooms, meeting space and dining facilities. The InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest has always been a podium for Royals, Diplomats, Politicians and Captains of Industries from all over the world. We welcome individual leisure or business travellers, as well as groups, and the team is able to accommodate all our valued guests applying IHG’s Luxury Fundamentals consistently. As a result, the hotel became Number 1 on TripAdvisor, based on our guest’s feedback within the first year of re-branding. I enjoy meeting with our guests and spending time with the team on anticipating our guest’s needs, and to focusing on continuously improving the services and facilities so as to remain the leading hotel in Bucharest.
How does the history and heritage of the InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest enhance the experience of the gala?
I sincerely hope that attendees of the LUXE Global Awards Gala enjoy the enchanting ambiance and grand entrance through the Colonnades area, an integral and preserved part of the InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest. The exquisite décor, paired with the exceptional culinary delights prepared by our dedicated team, enhances the luxurious setting and promises unforgettable experiences. What do you believe is the best factor in motivating staff to curate a successful guest experience?

Being part of this exciting journey, is celebrated in Bucharest by sharing results during our monthly Friday Bar – where all team members are coming together to celebrate success, learn about individual and team achievement and how we can inspire each other to live our motto “Aim Higher together”.
Finally, what are your future plans and aspirations for InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest, and how do you envision it evolving to cater to the changing needs of luxury travellers in the coming years?
At InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest, we continuously strive to exceed the expectations of our luxury guests. Our award-winning IHG One Rewards loyalty program allows guests to communicate their stay preferences in advance. Leveraging technology and guest data, we can recognize most of our guests and anticipate their special requests. I believe this program will be further enhanced to offer personalized
recommendations, such as local events, special dining or relaxation offers, and optimal room assignments.
Later this year, we will embark on a master plan to introduce a new concept for our main restaurant and bar. Alongside a complete renovation of the Spa InterContinental, these improvements will further elevate our facilities as we aim to remain the luxury hotel of choice in the region.

Sorina Rotaru Jazz Singer
Sorina’s call to the world of music came naturally and intuitively, from an inherent love for art, beauty and people. Shortly after graduating, she went on a sabbatical journey that took her through the bohemian squares in France, the picturesque streets of Granada and the vibrant venues in Berlin. It was in Berlin where she first experienced a jam session, an event that transformed her emotionally, chemically and spiritually. The musicians’ energy, their interplay and the feelings they conveyed to the audience made her irreversibly in love with music and its transformative power.
Sorina stands out with her versatile, elegant and playful voice, but above all, with the ease with which she navigates through various musical styles. Sorina’s musical project brings back the spirit, energy and depth of jazz music in a harmonious encounter between vintage and contemporary, with a rich repertoire of iconic jazz pieces, performed skilfully and passionately.

Departing from the historic Gare de l’Est in Paris - the same station that bid farewell to the inaugural Orient Express journey bound for Istanbul in 1883 - the locomotive tirelessly chuffs to life, filling the air with a palpable sense of anticipation. The journey begins with a leisurely pace through the
heart of France, snaking past scenic countrysides, charming villages and historic chateaus.
Panoramic panes from side-to-side invites a kaleidoscope of sights. Patchworks of verdant fields and ashen terrains doused in snow white and azure winter hues frame a picturesque glimpse of the world beyond with every passing moment on the track. Eric Tollner’s artistic journey began in a small rural farming community nestled in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, where he grew up surrounded by nature. From a young age, he was captivated by the process of creation. His hands were constantly busy sketching, drawing, and crafting, all while his eyes absorbed the beauty around him. His mother, a creative soul herself, nurtured these inclinations and instilled in him the values of precision, attention to detail, and a deep respect for quality craftsmanship. These lessons shaped Tollner’s future as a designer and manufacturer of fine jewelry, eventually guiding him to where he is today—an accomplished artist who crafted the iconic Lady LUXE trophy for the LUXE Global Awards.
The birth of the Lady LUXE trophy was a meticulously planned process that combined creativity and precision. It all started with a series of sketches, each exploring different aspects of the design from both aesthetic and practical perspectives. Tollner was not only interested in creating an elegant piece of art but also a functional trophy that could be proudly displayed. Once the design was finalized, he handcrafted the original figurine using a blend of solid brass and clay, focusing on perfecting every detail before moving forward. This original piece would serve as the foundation for the bronze replicas produced using the traditional ‘lost wax’ casting method. After casting, each figurine underwent an intricate process of filing, sanding, and polishing, before being finished with a brilliant gold plating that added the final touch of luxury.
Choosing materials for the trophy was a careful process driven by both symbolism and aesthetic appeal. Tollner selected bronze for its timelessness and historical significance in the world of art and sculpture. The material’s inherent beauty and rich associations made it the perfect choice for a trophy meant to symbolize achievement and excellence. To elevate the classic appeal, a modern crystal glass diamond was added to the figure’s hands, symbolizing contemporary refinement. The final touch was the gold plating, a nod to both tradition and luxury that perfectly captured the spirit of the LUXE Global Awards.
Creating the Lady LUXE trophy was not without its challenges. The most significant was achieving the balance between the symmetrical lower half and the more intricate, asymmetrical upper half of the figurine. This required extensive handcrafting, a process that tested Tollner’s patience and skill. Unlike modern techniques that rely on computer rendering and 3D printing, he chose to stick to the traditional methods, believing that true art carries the soul of the artist within it. His approach ensured that each trophy was not just a mass-produced object but a unique work of art, personal and meaningful. The crafting of the torso, in particular, demanded immense attention to detail,
especially in achieving the delicate symmetry of the figure’s face, hair, and body.
Tollner’s background as a jeweler was instrumental in overcoming these challenges. His expertise in precise techniques allowed him to bring a jeweler’s meticulousness to the design, ensuring that every aspect was crafted to perfection. The process, though laborious, was deeply rewarding, resulting in a trophy that stands out not just for its beauty but for the craftsmanship it represents.

From the initial discussions and sketches to the final polishing and plating, Tollner’s involvement in every stage of the creation process ensured that the final piece was a masterpiece.
