CONTRIBUTORS ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD

Adam Jacot de Boinod is a British author, most famous for his works about unusual words. He has written three books, the first two (The Meaning of Tingo and Toujours Tingo) looking at words that have no equivalent in the English language, and his latest book (The Wonder of Whiffling) looking at unusual words in English. He worked on the first series of the television panel game QI. His research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one, until there’s nothing left”. He then wrote up a follow-up book entitled Toujours Tingo in 2007. In 2009, de Boinod wrote The Wonder of Whiffling, a book about unusual words in English, the word “whiffling” having several meanings, including, “one who examined candidates for degrees… an officer who cleared the way for a procession, as well as being the name of the man with the whip in Morris dancing.”

EDITOR’S LETTER This edition was such a pleasure to work on. Who doesn’t love jet setting up and down the East Coast, from Nantucket to Wild Dunes in South Carolina to Islamorada in the Florida Keys? We have some of the most beautiful coastline in the world right here on the East Coast. How lucky we are to live, play and explore here. Writing the story on Nantucket really pulled at my heart strings. I have been going to Nantucket since I was a little girl, when at the age of 4 my parents bought their first vacation home on the island. With so many fond memories I could have gone on and on writing about the island. Such as surf casting with my father off the beach, to four wheeling to remote beach locations for afternoon picnics that lasted well into the evening to many nights spent at the Chicken Box dancing to reggae music. Not to mention a very special person Eddie Stojack, a scallop captain on Nantucket who knew all the best and secret places to scallop, we would jump off the boat then pop them on the grill. We would feast on world class clams casino or muscles right on the beach. Eddie’s scallop boat now resides at the whaling museum on the island. Nantucket is a very memorable place, my most favorite time on the island is in September. There is just something magical about the sunlight that time of year and the way the sun sets. Allison Parker wrote a beautiful article, Glamour Behind the Cockpit, highlighting an era of when air travel was something you dressed for. Growing up with a father who was a pilot; I can remember not being able to board a plane standby once from Hawaii to L.A. because I was not wearing stockings. I spent the night in the airport until the next morning when the next flight was available, of which I boarded stockings and all. Times have certainly changed. I loved reading Susan Gray’s article on The Moorings in Islamorada. I have never been, but after reading I cannot wait to go. We added a mental health section to this edition and look forward to carrying this theme forward in future issues. I believe this is a topic we can all benefit from. The more we talk openly and share mental health topics the more we may all become ok with our emotions and understand them and thus reach out to one another a little more often. This issue is filled with beautiful homes from the Hampton’s to Jackson Hole and the hottest new restaurants from New York City to Charlotte. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we all enjoyed creating it.

CONFESSIONS OF A

LIFESTYLE CONNOISSEUR WITH DEBRA KENNEDY

I

am a top graduate of MSU! Yes, just when I thought my higher education days were over, I found myself at the top of my class with honors. Really darlings, you are NEVER too old to learn the fundamentals about this gig called “Life!” Are you googling where MSU is located? It is what we all do from time to time when

we feel uncomfortable in a situation, “Make Shit Up” in our heads and that is exactly what I did recently. I have been attending several back to back events and people kept commenting to me things like, “Way to Go

Girl,” “I am So Proud of You,” “You’ve Got This” and all I could think was, Who is gossiping about me??? My head was spinning with all kinds of thoughts that were just not pleasant and when a beautiful lady named Jennifer strolled up as I was leaving the event and said, “You gave me the courage to have courage” I just had to ask her inquisitively exactly how did I encourage her. Replying with her beautiful eyes shining above her black mask she said, “from your article in Lux Lifestyle Magazine about leaving your husband.” This was a huge ah ha moment! These wonderful people were not gossiping about me but rather lifting me up for being so vulnerable about my life and in turn giving others the courage to make decisions in their own lives. Yep, this is why I love sharing with each of you my life journey and to hear the positive feedback on how my words have helped/ encouraged you in turn inspires me!!! We are here for each other! JET SET HAIR Greetings LUX Magazine Readers, What would it mean to you if you could save time and give your hair the “WOW” factor while traveling and vacationing during the summer months? This issue our topic of discussion , “Jet Set Hair”! Whether you are taking off or landing, what is trending for this summer hair looks is beautiful soft natural haircolor ,with low maintenance styling. Soft loose curls, soft waves with a wind blown touch also is essential when speaking of texture. Ponytails with a tousled appearance from next day hair will also lend a look of “casual sophistication” while jet setting in the air or enjoying a cooled down late afternoon boat ride on the water perhaps. Direct sun exposure during the summer months can cause hair to become somewhat compromised. Consult with your salon professional about receiving a clear shine topcoat in order to add that layer of protection for your hair while funning in the sun. Leave-in conditioners, and Dry Shampoos are key as well. These 2 products will play a very important role in your product wardrobe while maintaining a low key look of sophistication and style during the day. For a summer night out ,recharge your hair from the day with a dry shampoo to achieve body, texture, and movement. This will surely save time, help to create style, and take the chore out of manipulating hair when hair decides to have a mind of its own. Well my fellow readers, on behalf of the number 1 luxury resource , LUX magazine ,and myself. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making us a part of your day. Until next issue, the LUX team would like to wish you and your love ones incredible health, wealth, and prosperity.

Now to everyone that has taken time to educate yourself from this article lets make a commitment to follow through with consistency and best practices. Lets stay inspired and connected. Until our next issue, I would like to wish you and your love ones health, wealth, and prosperity. Warmest Regards, Aubrey Harley

So here are a few tips that I’m keeping in mind as I begin socializing… pandemic-style.

BALANCE 1. EASE OUT SLOWLY So far, I’ve started with just a few very small meetings with my mom on her lawn. She’s someone I am extremely comfortable with and who I feel like I can be myself around. We started with brief visits every few weeks and now they are becoming more regular. Easing into socializing — with someone I feel extremely comfortable with — has eased the stress and overwhelm of socializing again.

2. KEEP YOUR BOUNDARIES IN CHECK Now, more than ever, it’s important to keep our boundaries in check. This is certainly true when it comes to the safety of meeting up with someone face to face (or, rather, mask to mask), but it can also be expanded to your own comfort levels in terms of socializing. If you need to keep your meetings brief because you will think you will tire out easily or become overwhelmed, make your preferences known. If you are the type of person who

are far from alone. Even people who don’t generally have social anxiety are finding it disorienting to enter their social life after months of living like a hermit. This is a strange time for us all. So let’s recognize that whatever emotion we are feeling is normal, and give ourselves a ton of grace as we navigate this new normal together.

5. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING A little social stress and anxiety can be normal, especially in a time like this. But some people do have social anxiety, or social phobia, which is a diagnosable anxiety disorder. It’s even possible to newly develop social anxiety after a traumatic event such as a pandemic.

your personality. Everyone’s boundaries and needs are real and should be honored. Communication with your loved ones is always extremely important, but right now it’s imperative!

3. TALK ABOUT IT If you are feeling anxious about socializing with a particular person, or socializing in general, reach out. I know — reaching out to someone when you are already anxious about interacting with them in the first place can be stressful. But sometimes

BAR YOSHI NANTUCKET Located on the waterfront at the historic Old South Wharf, Bar Yoshi offers classic Japanese cuisine including sushi, noodles and dumplings, as well as raw bar offerings, poke, ceviche and, new for 2021, larger “Bar Yoshi Plates.” The beverage program has also been relaunched for the 2021 season, with new beer, sake and wine offerings, in addition to creative cocktails. The cocktail program, in particular, was created with several ideas in mind. Bar Yoshi is a Japanese inspired restaurant and represent that using traditional ingredients such as Sake, shiso, yuzu and more. There are also items shared across the company (other restaurants in Connecticut include Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill, Geronimo Tequila Bar and Southwest Grill and Camacho Garage) that are fan favorites. The unifying inspiration is that Bar Yoshi is located on the beautiful island of Nantucket. The program offers guests an opportunity to escape the day-today hustle and bustle and to feel elevated from the rest. This is done through island-style cocktails, such as the “I am a Daiquiri,” and sourcing fresh local ingredients to create an experience not to be forgotten. Summer 2021 marks an expansion of the award-winning restaurant. The original, intimate indoor dining space with direct views of the kitchen offers limited tables and sushi bar seating, and the new, open-air space next door adds a full bar with seating, in addition to tables and banquettes, providing direct waterfront views of the marina, as well as an expanded outdoor seating area. Bar Yoshi is open seven days a week for continuous service from 12pm-10pm (with a late night program launching soon) during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons on the island for dine-in and takeout, and offers catering to private homes, yachts and aircraft. FINE ART COLLAGE: NOT YOUR CHILDHOOD SCRAPBOOK By Nelia Verano “Collage is the cut, the tear, the rupture and the overlay of our contemporary culture. It is the hybrid language of urbanity—remixed, re-contextualized, and wholly built from the fragments of daily life.” – Pavel Zoubok

Equally as stimulating for adults, collage often takes the form of scrapbooking, and where many of us identify with collage as a deeply personal, engaging process that is easily accessible and requires no technical training. While it’s true that collage in its simplest form can be created by most anyone, fine art collage can be misunderstood by potential collectors, and limited to our own experiences and associations with it. Collage—sometimes called mixed media—tends to be a deeply personal practice for artists, laden with symbols, words, and materials that have some level of significance or meaning either conceptually or tangibly. Expertly-done collages by professional artists are an entirely different matter all-together, and can offer an experience for viewers that is unique to collage.

The following are aspects to pay attention to when viewing or considering adding fine art collage to your personal collection: 1) Juxtaposition: a key component to a good collage is how

Good collages create tension and force us to re-imagine objects or text when used in new and non-traditional ways. 2) Materials: the wider range of materials used (think anything from historical book cut-outs to paper mache to Polaroids), the more interesting the final work becomes. A broad use of materials equates to more texture, color, contrast, and depth. 3) Composition: well-done composition is always important for any work, but it is especially important with collage. While anyone can randomly glue magazine cut-outs onto paper and call it a collage, artists approach composition, like any painting or sculpture, thoughtfully and with intention. STYLE Since traveling restrictions have been winding down, visiting your dream destinations has now become more likely than ever. From becoming a constant daydream to a tangible airplane ticket and hotel booking, it is very essential to be prepared as we also face a whole new nearly post-pandemic world. After yearning for new surroundings, EMbellecerte, the mother-daughter personal shopper and stylist duo, is here to help you enjoy your next exquisite getaway, far away adventure, or business trip. When travelling, it has worked for us to create a checklist for all needed items for a tangible way of keeping “quality control” to be able to enjoy every single second of this new expedition. From shopping tips, essential packing ideas, to letting you know about some life-changing gadgets that are out there to make our travels a whole lot easier, more relaxing and oh so fun - here are some of our travelling tips:

1. SHOP LOCAL: There is nothing more magical than visiting cute boutiques or vibrant farmer’s market-esque fairs to discover some of the most unique clothing and accessories to shop for. Surely to bring local and small business owners a smile, shopping from these charming stores with one-of-a-kind items is a wonderful way to support the passionate owners and their beautiful locales. Given our experience from shopping at the most delightful local boutiques, the gems and treasures you can find in these sorts of stores are priceless. 2. PACK SMART:

Packing smart is very important when it comes to travelling,

ways great to pack comfy bottoms like light slacks, stretch jeans

especially when visiting far away places and going on extended

stays. It is always great to observe firsthand what items are nec-

If you are like many that like to remove their shoes on the plane, there are some wonderful slip-on rubbery sock-like shoes called Skinners that are made especially to be worn on planes.

3. DO YOUR RESEARCH Regardless of where you travel, it is always best to do your research before travelling. Be aware of places you can eat and buy groceries at especially when you have food allergies or intolerances and pack some snacks just in case. Learn more about the culture, beliefs, business, dining, social and tipping etiquette, and perhaps even learn some key phrases in the language you will be travelling to and regional slang, too, if applicable. PRE-FALL 2021:

THE STANDOUT STYLES By: Sharon Jane | @itssharonjane

The allure of the approaching season in fashion is the “in-between” styles that prepare us for the shifts of climates to come, resulting in transitional Cruise, Resort, and Pre-Fall collections. These collections that occur in between the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections welcome more functional clothing that are easily adaptable, resulting in looks with extended sustainability and durability. Cruise, Resort and Pre-Fall collections are also made with travelling in mind, welcoming adjustable outfits for a variety of destinations, accommodating to different climates, landscapes, cultures, and so much more. As we enter into Pre-Fall styles, we will see elements of the remaining summer fused with cozier autumnal details. Observing Pre-Fall collections, trending for this upcoming season include everlasting classic looks, comfortable and functional essentials, business-ready blazers and trousers, and the many romantic elements of voluminous 80’s silhouettes.

60

STYLE THE TIMELESS & CLASSICS For Pre-Fall, it was evident that one cannot go wrong with the timeless fashion items we always gravitate to. From classic neutral color palettes to your favorite blue jeans - timeless looks are one of the go-to styles for Pre-Fall. Camels, Grays, Creamy Whites and Midnight Blacks - many neutrals were seen in multiple collections in a variety of textures, hemlines, shades, fabrics, and so much more. Marni had warmer beiges and classic khakis as well quintessential shades of black and navy. Emilia Wickstead also opted for classic colors like offwhite and dark chocolate brown, interpreted in soft and feminine silhouettes - an exquisite elegance that

is exciting to see. On the other hand, Alexander McQueen had perfectly interchangeable black-and-white looks. Countless other collections included timeless neutral colors such as Valentino, Balenciaga, Sacai, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Balmain, Tory Burch, Proenza Schouler, Chanel and Alberta Ferreti among many. Also many closet essentials were seen that we can use year-round (and beyond) such as the enduring and trusted trench coat (Valentino, Rokh, Sacai, and more) or the never-failing jeans in a classic true blue wash (Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga MSGM, Balmain and more). STYLE COMFORT (AND FUNCTIONALITY) IS KEY As Summer looks transition into cozier autumnal outfits and we get closer to cooler breezes and our favorite holidays, the nostalgia begins to flutter inside of us. With an increasing craving for warm knits, comfy layers and hugging ponchos during transitioning seasons, Pre-Fall is here to give us the best of both worlds. Pre-Fall has arrived with a bang with the most love-atfirst-sight and comfy essentials as well as incredibly functional layers that will become our adventure companions in our travels and journey into a new equinox. Some cozy and functional pieces includes Marni’s oversized and multi-use plaid cape-coat hybrid and striped mock turtleneck sweaters, Rokh’s never-failing trench coats, Sacai’s roomy puffer jackets and snug layering, Proenza Schouler’s minimalistic and voluminous tunic-dress, and Stella McCartney’s practical 80s-90s-esque windbreakers and extra leg-room pants that are blissfully wide, making it perfect for comfortable travelling.

We also

saw cheery oversized knit sweaters from MSGM, head-turning abounding wide pants from JW Anderson, hoodie combos, palazzo pants and free-spirited styles from Alberta Ferreti and cool n’ elegant coats and utilitarian styles from Burberry.

Pre-Fall certainly did not forget

about the wanderlusters by offering incredible collections impeccably suitable for our travels like Balmain’s head-to-toe...er sorry..head-to-bag matching print sets (and the roomy matching tote bags and gorgeous square suitcases can certainly fit everything you could possibly need FYI) and Tory Burch’s loose Zen blouse-pant set that is fit for a well-deserved weekend getaway. Tory-Burch-Pre-Fall-21

With the collections we saw for Pre-Fall, they all certainly had one thing in common

- they were made for not only the Summer-Fall transition, but also for our transition into a post-pandemic world, as well. Many of the designers thought of coating us to feel safe and sound as we confront this new world. They also created these designs to help us embrace all of the exciting and new adventures we have been so eager to do while we were at home that very soon we will be able to!

I MEAN BUSINESS! With new goals in mind and more ambitious than ever to work on our dreams (and not let anything stop us), many blazers and business suits have been seen for Pre-Fall. Blazers in all shapes and sizes were seen tremendously, making it the perfect outerwear to use year-round with just the right warmth while looking smart and ready to take on anything. How can we not love blazers for Pre-Fall? As we are breaking out of our cocoon and flying into a whole new invigorating world that we have gained a newfound admiration towards, many designers have each created their own unique takes on the blazer that will surely ignite something in us. Whether it’s the beautifully asymmetrical Blazer from Proenza Schouler, slim fitting classic and cropped styles from Alexander McQueen, layered, cropped and contemporary types from Rokh, bright and joyful suits from MSGM, British-inspired 3-piece suit with a matching baker boy hat from Alberta Ferreti, gloriously 80’s style blazers with sky-high shoulder pads from Balmain, effortlessly cool and modern suit styles from Sacai, elegant and feminine blazers from Tory Burch, to the classic suit style from Sportmax.

STYLE THIS ONE IS FOR THE NEW ROMANTICS… Perhaps with the continued influence of the 80’s strongly evident in many collections, Pre-Fall was specifically very inspired by the New Romantic era of the 80’s. Think of David Bowie, Boy George, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna with the softer glam pop-rock silhouettes, Romanticism Era’s (1820s) soft detailing like ruffles and plumes, and lovely prom-inspired (and Met Gala inspired) styles were all seen throughout for this season. The New Romantics era from the 80s was greatly inspired by the Romanticism of the 1800’s resulting in many puff sleeves, lower necklines, more voluminous hemlines, and extravagant collars and sleeves combined with defined waists and cinching belts - all seen throughout Pre-Fall, as well. Aside from the classic neutrals seen for Pre-Fall, thanks to the heavy 80s inspiration, colors such as the primary reds, greens and blues (seen in Louis Vuitton among many) that can be used year-round and cotton candy pastels like sky blue (Alexander McQueen) and baby pinks (Balmain) are trending for this season. Pastel pinks, greens and blues, balloon hems, hypnotizing floral prints, ruffles, princess puff sleeves, peplums, and pretty bows were some of the many details trending for this upcoming season. Alexander McQueen incorporated a lot of these such as their electric blue midi-length voluminous balloon skirt and their multiple-puff sleeve designs. Other designers inspired by the New Romantics include Balenciaga’s bright fuchsia puff sleeve dress, Louis Vuitton’s ruffled skirt, MSGM’s bubblegum pop color scheme and ruffles and tulle, Burberry’s fruit-colored pants and rock-n-roll leather jackets, Sportmax’s black tie party attire styled with opera gloves and draping details, JW Anderson super puff sleeves, Tory Burch’s working girl 2-piece sets and Shakespearean-inspired draped lavallière bow blouses, Alberta Ferreti’s layered ruffles and lace detailing, and Chanel’s flowing tulle capes and soft doily collars. Balmain also wonderfully applied these details into their collection in a perfect 80’s Romantic extravaganza featuring sky-high padded shoulders, lace, satin gloves, tweed, voluminous ballerina tulle skirts, flowing mesh sleeves, powder pinks

and baby blues, tennis visors, lavallière bows, sweater vests, sparkly lurex, feathers, faux fur and so so so much more! With the dramatic, extra-sensory and oh-so-glamorous New Romantics trend, we are more than ready for more nights out and gala attending and with these morning to evening collections we have all we need to be fashionable, 24/7! Our closets will be totally prepared for the soon post-pandemic lifestyle we are excited to embrace thanks to these incredible Pre-Fall collections.

to fly home via TWA was the best option. A scary yet impactful event occurred in the air on the way home. The plane lost an engine over the Atlantic and had to make an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland. Consequently, Kathleen’s mother had become air sick with a fever and ended up in a hospital after the emergency landing. No fear in the friendly skies, Kathleen’s care fell into the caring hands of the 6 airline stewardesses. Morgan recalls, “I said to them, ‘When I grow up, I’m going to be an “airline stewardess”, and I never changed my mind.” The glitz of the flight experience and the ambiance of being on the plane with beautiful, well-coiffed stewardesses was all part of the ambiance. To cultivate the experience, stewardess training always included grooming instruction. It was not accident that the stewardess drew glances of awe as they walked through the airports reporting for work. Crisp, sharp, well fitted custom uniforms were just the start. Lessons covered all kinds of topics even details like how to select the most flattering shade of eye shadow. Beauty AND brains were the expectation for stewardesses.

Making a House a Home

Q

Dear Claudia,

My partner and I just bought a beautiful house in an exclusive community. He wants to use a popular furniture store to furnish the primary rooms. Although their furniture is attractive, I find it to be generic and somewhat sterile. I remember growing up, my mother was a collector of antique furniture and I enjoyed the lovely warmth those select pieces brought to our otherwise contemporary home. It also felt very meaningful. How can we make a new house not look like we picked everything straight out of a catalogue but instead feel like a home? Thank you, Catherine in Marvin, NC

A

Dear Catherine,

I fully understand what you are de-

scribing. When I was in graduate school, I used to visit my professor’s home. I’d sit cozily in her study surrounded by gorgeous color, shelves filled with books, and time worn furniture that felt warm and inviting. design spaces using those pieces as inspiration. Since we were still in need of a lot of furnishings, we sourced both new, eco-friendly, high-quality furniture and authentic, mid-century-modern finds. While the new pieces feel modern with their clean lines (in keeping with the architecture), their beautiful, solid wood construction provide warmth and richness. The vintage pieces we found add patina and beautiful imperfection. This tension between new and old creates visual interest in a design and keeps a space from feeling one-note. As the furnishings were installed, the homeowners and I began thoughtfully adding their treasured possessions, such as a framed textile from the wife’s place of birth that now hangs above the console in her dining room and her husband’s prized Samurai sword collection. As my clients live in their new home, they are slowly and carefully introducing additional items from their collections, mindful to incorporate only those items that bring them joy. Because no piece is too precious for everyday use and imperfections are embraced, their house feels warm and welcoming. So, Catherine, you may be asking, “How does this translate to my design dilemma?” I suggest taking the same design principles and applying them to your own home by following these steps: 1.

Find your inspiration pieces. Art, patterned rugs, and textiles all serve as excellent starting points when designing a room.

80

RETREAT 2. Don’t purchase all your furniture from the same store. My

Design by Claudia Josephine Design Photography by Laura Sumrak Photostyling by Kendra Surface

only exception to this rule is when a person is very design challenged and hiring a designer isn’t in the budget. An in-store designer can be very helpful in creating a cohesive room; however, it will reflect the store’s aesthetic and may not offer you the personality you’re seeking. 3. Use online sources, like Chairish and 1st Dibs, or local vintage furniture stores to purchase a few interesting pieces. Better yet, if you have treasured family heirlooms, incorporate those. 4. Edit mindfully. Start with the minimal number of furnishings you absolutely need and add only what you love. 5. If this feels overwhelming, hire a designer to help pull it all together.

Design by Claudia Josephine Design Photography by Laura Sumrak Photostyling by Kendra Surface

With these guidelines, you and your partner should be able to find a comfortable middle ground and embrace a bit of beautiful imperfection. Best of luck, Catherine, with your new home! Warmest regards, Claudia

Anne was asked to design for the Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, WY. The conference brings together artists, scholars, collectors, architects, fashion designers, and interior designers that have a passion for the west. When asked to participate in the interior design showhouse, she created a showroom that highlighted her elegant, yet sophisticated style. Her goal was to design a welcoming living room space that represented a well traveled lifestyle and merged southern charm with western influence. Anne was inspired by the Jackson environment and brought various textures, colors, and creative artworks into her design. The leathers, hides, metals, and stone textures are paired with a soft color pallet that represents a global perspective. In other words, her designs are not limited to one region or style. At this conference, Anne was honored to win the "Best Interior Design" out of a pool of national interior designers and well renowned judges. She will be participating in this showhouse again this coming September 9-14 in Jackson. Anne has opened a studio in Jackson Hole, WY where she continues to bring her southern touch to her western-based clientele. She travels between Charlotte and Jackson each month and is continuing to expand beyond these borders.

MELANIE ROY IN BRIDGEHAMPTON NY

RETREAT

For this project, interior designer Melanie Roy (principal of Melanie Roy Design) was hired by a couple who recently became empty nesters and wanted to build a new home in Bridgehampton that reflected this new stage of their life. Their goal was to create a sophisticated, yet comfortable (and kid-friendly) summer house, in which they could relax and enjoy extended visits from their grown children (and future grandchildren). As the clients were initially afraid to incorporate any color into the design, Melanie started off with a neutral palette, slowly adding in soft colors – light blues, grays and creams – followed by pops of turquoise to create a cool and calming vibe throughout the house. Varying textures and materials were then layered into the design, adding further depth and dimension.

RETREAT Upon walking into the house, visitors are greeted by a custom hide rug, leather bench and colorful artwork which can be seen on the second story hallway. The entry flows into the living room, which has a custom Stark carpet in blue and white, a Roche Bobois coffee table and white leather swivel chairs. In the den, a comfortable sofa and concrete coffee tables create a casual, family friendly space, while sculptural bookshelves display a collection of white Jonathan Adler vases and custom covered books. The all-white kitchen has a large oval Eero Saarinen table from Knoll with acrylic chairs designed to keep the rooms’ open feeling.

In the dining room, Melanie designed custom turquoise leather dining chairs to play off of the turquoise flowers found in the client’s artwork by Danielle Procaccio. Since the family loves to entertain and host dinner parties, the dining room quickly became one of their favorite rooms of the house.

For the master bedroom Melanie employed shades of soft blues to create a calming sanctuary, while the guest rooms, which are all en-suite, feature soft green, purple and blue color palettes. To create more opportunities for the homeowners to spend time relaxing with family and friends, Melanie incorporated open living spaces in several of the bedrooms.

RETREAT HOME

DUNWYCK ESTATE Katelyn Rutt

photography by Single Point Media As if transported from the page of a story book, Dunwyck mansion lies at the heart of 20 acres of lush greenery, circled by foggy peaks—equal parts charming and whimsical. The 1926 home, which rises two stories atop Columbus Mountain, N.C. is a rare listing of its kind. Brimming with character, the property’s crawling rock walls, pops of floral color and gentle ponds make it every synonym of idyllic. Despite its luxurious 5,800-square-foot expanse, the mansion offers cozy English living with all the necessary updates for a modern resident.

RETREAT The stunning Tudor revival was named (“Dun”) after the Gaelic-Irish and Scottish word for castle and (“Wyck”) the Dutch and Swedish word meaning “place of abundance.” The home was originally designed by Devereux Van Akin, one of America’s first female architects, as a winter cottage for prominent Chicagoans Herbert Cushman Metcalf and Mae Holmes Metcalf. A love for country living, it seems, was a requisite for Van Akin, whose original blueprints resembled a subsistence farm’s main dwelling. Over the decades, small flourishes were added as the keys passed ownership, further building on to the home’s eclectic charm.

OF THE SEA

This little island isn’t exactly the largest destination yet it has certainly become a top draw of the jet setting crowd. When you think of a visit to the perennially preppy Nantucket, images of sand and sun and evening bonfires on the beach come to mind. There are 80 miles of some of the worlds most beautiful beaches. Nantucket is a very special place, a world class destination ideal for kicking back. For more than a century, the mid-1700s to the late 1830s, Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world. As Melville wrote in Moby Dick: “Thus have these . . . Nantucketers overrun and conquered the watery world like so many Alexanders.” The dangerous but incredibly lucrative industry made it one of the wealthiest communities in America. Of which every captain’s house, lighthouse, and harbor were left with a tale worth telling. You can be just about anywhere and step out in your favorite

INTERIOR DESIGNER LAYTON CAMPBELL OF CHARLOTTE, NC SHARES HIS CURATED LIST OF CENTRIC SPOTS AND ACTIVITIES WHILE HE IS ON NANTUCKET WORKING ONE OF HIS CURRENT PROJECTS.

Favorite place to watch the sunset? After long days of installation I loved coming back to The White Elephant and catching the sunset on the water bouncing light on all the boats in the harbor. Favorite spot for a glass of wine? I loved dinner and wine at Dune. Their wine list was extensive! Must stop shop? I really found some gems for the project at Nomad Nantucket. They bring in some wonderful one of a kind pieces including art, antiques and fun tableware as well! Most loved beach? When I’m working I don’t get to hang out at the beach but I did take the opportunity to visit Steps beach and it is a must see for anyone new to Nantucket. Take the long steps (thus its name) down to the beach and enjoy the dramatic contrast of beach and cliffside sprinkled with beautiful homes along the top. Favorite go to restaurant? My absolute favorite meal was at Proprietor’s Nantucket. The craft cocktails were delicious and the menu was so creative. I could have stayed there all night!

116

Boat or Cape Air? We did Cape Air because of timing and needing to be on the island quickly. Either is fun. I do love to unwind on a ferry as you say good bye to the mainland. Favorite spot for cocktails? I think anyplace along the piers is fun to catch a drink. We enjoyed a couple of margaritas at the Gazebo. Best Breakfast? Most definitely loved breakfast at Lemon Press. They offer everything from a simple avocado toast to decadent waffles and inventive egg dishes. Coffee drinks were also well done. What you always take home? Instead of things, I just love reliving the moments from the pics I’ve taken throughout my time on this magical island.

As a former resident, now frequent visitor to South Florida, some of my best memories and ultimate getaway rejuvenations have occurred within the confines of this fabulous peninsula. Florida hosts many of my favorite destinations. One of the most memorable escapes to a much-needed luxury getaway began with a cruise along the narrow passage roadway that follows US-1 South from Miami to the Florida Keys. The “Keys” are a strand of lush, tropical and rocky islands, amassing a remarkable stretch of highway 180 miles south of Biscayne Bay. This noted archipelago of coral and sand islands appear chain linked to the Florida mainland by 42 bridges that span just above the shallow waters of Florida Bay. These dazzling translucent waterways funnel into a deeper channel that connects with the Straits of Florida and ultimately into the Gulf Stream.

SWEETGRASS INN: A COASTAL EXPERIENCE photography courtesy of Sweetgrass Inn Recently opened, The Sweetgrass Inn is situated on four acres of pristine South Carolina coastline in the gated community of Wild Dunes. Connected to the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway and about 30 minutes east of Downtown Charleston by car. The property was inspired by the sweetgrass that’s indigenous to the area, making Sweetgrass Inn a representation of what South Carolina is all about. Sweetgrass is what holds together the dunes of the area, offering stability, retaining history, and fostering life. Only 12 miles from downtown Charleston, South Carolina, Wild Dunes Resort and Sweetgrass offer 1,600 acres of world-class golf, topranked tennis, an award-winning restaurant, and miles of pristine beach.
