PROTECTING AFRICA’S REMAINING NATURAL SPACES

Space for Giants addresses climate pressures to ensure a future for people and wildlife Africa is home to some of the most biodiverse ecosystems left on Earth and they are disappearing at an alarming and accelerating rate. If these wondrous national parks and conservation areas are not protected now, they will be lost forever. There is hope. Space for Giants works with national and community partners throughout Africa to preserve and restore some of the world’s most important natural ecosystems and the wildlife they hold. Unwavering in their commitment, they are strengthening our collective response to achieve a meaningful impact. Humanity can no longer dream about the world that was. Urgent action must be taken now to ensure these wild spaces survive long into the future.

Space for Giants is an international conservation organisation that protects Africa’s remaining natural ecosystems and the large wild animals they contain, while bringing major social and economic value to local communities and national governments. It is headquartered in Kenya, works in ten countries in Africa, and is registered as a charity in the UK and a 501c3 non profit in the US.

With the holidays upon us and yet another New Year around the corner, we

not just for a better today - but for a better future. As this column would suggest, I’m talking about money and your financial

I’m going to get it together financially, and manage my money better, instead of it managing me”, then this column is for you. Read on to find out how to take control and revitalize your finances. And one that has been greatly exaggerated with the COVID-19 pandemic last year that made it even more urgent for better financial and budget management.

One last thing to consider: money and lack of financial clarity, specifically, causes stress. If you take away anything from this article, I hope it’s that paying yourself first by saving and having that rainy day fund established should be a priority. It’s essential to any type of success and gives you options down the road. TASTE FEAST

FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE CITY

ARTISANAL & PEPPERVINE by Lisa Mele There’s a hidden secret in North Carolina that circulates via word of mouth about a certain restaurant located in the mountains. With a long waitlist, you sometimes must be creative with your schedule to dine there. It’s fun (and rare) to find a special excitement that comes with dining out these days. But somehow, Bill and Anita Greene have created that excitement with their restaurants. Both located in North Carolina, Artisanal (Banner Elk) and Peppervine (Charlotte) have something in common besides the same founders and shared executive chef: a consistently great reputation.

TASTE MIXOLOGY

From Kendall Jenner and The Rock to former NFL/NHL pros James Robert Morris and Chris Chelios, celebrities are making a splash in the tequila scene. by Katelyn Rutt Meet the newest tequila brand on the block—El Bandido Yankee Tequila Company. The label launched this summer by two former pro athletes and entrepreneurs with a longtime dream of developing a spirit that reflects their drive for excellence and integrity. With transparency at the forefront of its ethos, the brand prides itself on its authentic approach to the age-old history and tradition of tequila—with an empowered twist. Nestled in the quaint town of Jalisco, El Viejito Distillery operates under the female direction of master distiller Karina Rojo. There, the team strives to pay homage to the region’s heritage, give back to local sustainability efforts and improve lives through the help of S.A.C.R.E.D—a not-for-profit that supports rural Mexican communities. With authenticity, reverence and a sustainable mission, the brand is poised to create a powerful legacy.

James Robert Morris and Chris Chelios - El Bandido Tangy citrus and notes of pepper are juxtaposed with buttery vanilla for a criminally smooth flavor profile. Blended with 100 percent blue Weber agave—known for its particularly sweet, tropical and caramel-like taste—the sipping spirit breaks boundaries with a flair. This blanco is perfect on the rocks, or incorporated into a craft cocktail. Just like its younger counterpart, the reposado touts a bold flavor with no additives. Stripped and recharred American oak bourbon barrels contribute a woody hint to the tequila’s aging process, resulting in a harmonious blend of warm agave, toasted oak and vanilla. It’s every synonym of velvety, without the typical “tequila burn.”

46

TASTE HONORABLE MENTIONS Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson - Teremana Meaning “spirit of the earth,” the 2020-founded company is the definition of brightness, sustainability and community. The brick oven roasted tequila is offered in a blanco and reposado, and true to the star’s coined phrase—“Manna. Gratitude. Tequila.”—was created to celebrate the small, meaningful moments in life. The brand has even made an appearance in Johnson’s famous cheat meals in the form of tequila-soaked coconut chips and tequila maple syrup. Flavor profile: Earthy and herbal, with notes of caramel and citrus zest.

Kendall Jenner - 818 The model-turned-connoisseur stepped onto the scene earlier this year with her award-winning tequila trio—blanco, reposado and añejo. Named after her hometown area code, Jenner’s brand has been four years in the making and won countless world tasting competitions before its official launch. The tequila supports community and planet-saving initiatives, and its star-studded launch party garnered the likes of Drake, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and more. Flavor profile: Bold, fresh and sweet, with vanilla notes.

Nick Jonas - Villa One Almost as smooth as his tequila was Jonas’ foray into agave spirits in 2019, inspired by a trip to Mexico with friend and fashion designer John Varvatos. The co-founders created three expressions—silver, añejo and reposado—with a unique combination of blue Weber agave from both highland and lowland regions of Mexico. Jonas’ favorite cocktail? Reposado on the rocks, with club soda and an orange wedge. Flavor profile: Floral and nutty, with notes of pineapple and banana cream.

OPESICK”- A HULU LIMITED SERIES, Hoogenakker’s latest work, will showcase his tenacity and ability to dive into a complex character in a pivoted series which captures a serious public epidemic in America - the opioid crisis. Premiering in October 2021, Hoogenakker will star in “Dopesick” opposite Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Kaitlyn Dever, and Rosario Dawson. The series is based on the New York Times bestselling book by Beth Macy, “Dopesick”. Viewers will be taken inside the struggle in the United States with opioid addiction from varies viewpoints including the executive C-Suites of Purdue Pharma, to a small, economically challenged Virginia mining community, and to the inside offices of the DEA. Hoogenakker excellently portrays his character of Randy Ramseyer, an assistant US Attorney prosecuting the infamous and ongoing Purdue Pharma case. “Hoogenakker is no stranger to strong roles within the Hulu family of series most recently he starred in the Hulu mystery series “Castle Rock” as Carl Wilkes, opposite Lizzy Caplan. A native Charlottean, (born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina) Hoogenakker knew his calling to perform as a young man. His early introduction to public performance showcased his talents – he was a two-time state and district high school debate champion in Humorous Interpretation. Following his dreams, Hoogenakker earned a spot at The Theatre School at DePaul University, in Chicago. Stage performances grabbed his interest and he appeared in many of the city’s illustrious houses including The Goodman, Writers' Theatre, Court Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and the renowned Steppenwolf Garage. His multi-faceted approach to theater performances ranged from Chris Smith in Tracy Letts' Killer Joe to the role of Hamlet at The Illinois Shakespeare Festival. Moving into other areas of the country, he was applauded with phenomenal reviews for his performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York as the tragic alcohol-addled Willie Oban in the acclaimed remounting of “The Iceman Cometh,” alongside Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy. A memorable and treasured first on-camera credit was the 2006 feature “Flags of Our Fathers,” under the esteemed direction of Clint Eastwood. Hoogenakker truly embodies the tenacity and drive as he utilized all realms of his acting portfolio to step into the spotlight. As a native Charlottean myself, I loved the opportunity to take a glimpse into what makes this gifted actor who he is onscreen as well as off.

How do you channel impressions and depth when switching from different genres of characters and what techniques if any

Describe your transition from high school in Charlotte to an acting career around the world. Wild fits and starts. Ups and downs. Mowing the greens at a golf course in Charlotte one week, learning Yoga and studying Shakespeare in Chicago the next. Dispatching truckers during the day, performing in a storefront theater later that night. The competition I’d experienced in high school debate only intensified at DePaul; when I was there, we had a cut system in place. Only half of the freshmen Acting students were invited back for a second year, and then only half of those were asked to remain for the third and fourth years. This toughened us, but I think it also unmoored us from ourselves, as our focus often became about pleasing the teachers and securing a spot. It took a bit of time after school to remember myself and tap into instincts that were truly my own and not my idea of what someone else might be looking for. I worked primarily in Theatre in Chicago and Milwaukee for years, and then gradually began to book jobs on commercials, and Film and TV that were being shot in town. do you use to embody the soul of a character? I love language, and a well written script is such an invaluable gift. When I read a novel or a script it plays in my head like an audiobook. I’m rarely in a hurry when I’m reading, and will occasionally read passages multiple times before moving on. For me, it’s about finding the headspace, or the solitude, to be able to hear the interplay in my mind as I’m reading it. Then I turn my mouth on and try and tune it to sound like what I’ve heard in my mind. The more I work with the words, the more I learn from them. I’ll also play a scene multiple ways while I’m working with it to open it up and keep it fresh. I like to look at it from different angles to see what I might find. And then, in my downtime, I walk around with this other person in my body and mutter their words until the last time I’m called on to say them, either on set or on stage. My kids are going to keep their psychologists very busy. Mr. Abraham stopped us to give us some feedback, and we knew it was after giving us a note that he was most likely to dismiss us and ask for the next two actors. Avoid the temptation to trash your body, be it in celebration or in sadness. Try to find gratitude for both the ups and the downs, and don’t associate your worth with your success, or lack thereof. Don’t hesitate to make bold choices for fear you might stand out too much. Seek to understand every human, regardless of how society has painted them. Caricatures do not make for interesting portrayals; our challenge is to find the humanity in each role, even when the person we’re portraying is what we might otherwise term ‘despicable’. I did a couple plays at the Children’s Theater in Charlotte, as a kid. The first one was The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and I had a few lines in it, which was fun, but the second one was Oliver Twist. In that one, I played one of the street urchins and didn’t really have any lines, but they fed us sausage on stage for every performance. It was the free sausage that did it. I was hooked! You gotta love the perks. Acting can be exciting as well as difficult to break into and achieve success, what kept you going when you encountered challenging situations? Often times when a play is good, or even when a scene you’re working on got to set is just right, you will feel the effect that it has on the other people sharing space with you. It’s a kind of communion, and it’s also like casting a spell. It’s intoxicating, and when I first felt it, I had to keep going back for more. I’ve paid a lot of dues in the chase to keep feeling that feeling, but the elation of it is what has kept me coming back for more. That, and sheer stubbornness. Also, there’s nothing else I want to do.

addiction many have suffered in this part of the country is a symptom of weakness, or of personal failing, as opposed to being more a result of regulatory failures and greed. Getting to portray Randy Ramseyer, one of the actual Assistant US Attorneys in Abingdon, Virginia, who brought suit against Purdue, was a wonderful fit for me. Do you feel “Dopesick” will impact social awareness to the brevity of the opioid crisis in the United States and overall social awareness of drug dependency? It is my devout wish that it does precisely that. I think opioid addiction is a dirty little secret for more American families than we are openly talking about. And what I think Dopesick does is to demonstrate how a regulatory body that we depend upon to protect us failed us and did precisely the opposite. The show also goes a long way to humanize this dealing with addiction. When not onstage or in front of the camera, what is your favorite way to unwind and relax? Hanging out with my family and our dog, seeking out waterfalls, and walking the trails and streams of Western North Carolina.

While Savannah might evoke visions of balmy-weather touring, beach vacations and lush greenery, the coastal city has also been a holiday hotspot for more than two centuries. With its crisp red bows, flickering street lamps and Victorian London-like atmosphere, the southern city puts its own twist on the Christmas season. The master bedroom reflects a more transitional style with a relaxed feel. Kelly envisioned this space as a peaceful retreat for the couple. The bed has modern, sleek lines while the linens contain accent fabric with real feathers. The inspiration for the feathers came from the clients love of outdoors and depicts as a touch of eclecticism. One of the more interesting design elements of the home presented itself in the master bedroom where the original chandelier contained an architectural medallion. One might conclude this simplest thing would be to replace it. Kelly chose instead, to make the ceiling more visually enticing by painting the medallion to match.

Q&A: What is fall/winter’s biggest trend this year? Luxuriously plush and all-around irresistible, velvet is the perfect texture for creating a cozy, fall and winter-ready ambiance. We recommend incorporating velvet as the room's main statement piece, such as a couch or accent chair. However, there needs to be a mixture of fabrics and textures in a room, and luckily velvet is a versatile material and works with most others. How can you make a room feel Cozy? Cozy doesn't just apply to fabrics and upholstery. Placing a chair in a corner can make a room and nook instantly inviting. With this small styling choice, you create a moment where you can imagine yourself curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a book and watching the leaves change color. How can you create a luxurious feel without buying all new furniture? Super soft textures that feel luxurious are always great when the weather gets cooler. If you don’t want to commit to a new sofa or armchair, a quick and easy refresh are throw pillows like luxe shearling ones from our fall collection. They can easily be layered with existing pieces to avoid a furniture rehaul. What colors do you recommend for the fall and winter? Neutrals are our favorite year-round, but they are particularly great when it comes to fall decorating. From creams, to taupe’s, to greys, to wood tones, this palette is inherently cozy and calming. Mixed in with greenery, you can’t go wrong. How do you suggest styling accessories? When it comes to accessories, mix old pieces in with new. Vintage finds have a patina that makes a room look collected and assembled over time. A favorite vintage item we recommend keeping an eye out for is an antique gilt mirror. You will always find a place for it, no matter how big or small your space is. Volume 5, Issue 6 | www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

In the living room, Matt chose black cabinets to match with the edginess seen in other elements throughout the house. They chose a white oak top to create contrast with the black cabinets and gold hardware.

The outdoor patio is designed to be an extension of the living room. It features an expansive 15 ft wide door that cascades open. Matt seeks to find balance within a home by creating multiple rooms that are all connected aesthetically to each other. With vaulted ceilings and two skylights, this is an outdoor area that is inviting and cohesive with the rest of the house.

Every year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade ends with an early visit from Santa Claus. As he comes to a stop in front of Macy’s department store on Manhattan’s 6th Ave, it marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season, which just wouldn’t be the same without the legendary shopping window displays along the adjacent 5th avenue. The biggest department stores in the world use these windows to frame unique and often breathtaking presentations of holiday cheer, typically with some highly creative theme or a throw-back to a bygone era. Even the iconic Empire State Building gets into the spirit of the season. Standing at the center of the New York City skyline, it sports Christmas lights of red and green over the holidays. This special seasonal lighting debuts each year along with the opening night of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. For some people, there is no Christmas tradition more vivid than the high leg kicks of the precision chorus Rockettes as they grace the stage at Rockefeller Center’s Radio City Music Hall for this time-honored holiday event.
