A Rising Tide Lifts all Boats
A
EDITOR IN CHIEF, FOUNDER Colleen Guilfoile Richmond
-John F. Kennedy
Rising tide that lifts all boats is a fabulous concept that all benefit from a truly good outcome. This idiom, coined by John F. Kennedy, describes the idea that when something is performing well, all people will benefit from it.There is nothing selfish involved in this theory. And we love how Lauren Bush Lauren created something remarkable to help all from her stylish and trendy Feed bags, pg. 78 As well as this month’s Inspire article by Leslie Green “Selfish, Selfish, Selfish” how actually benefiting yourself at times may be the least selfish act you can do. Fall is a time of coming together, whether for a football game or holiday it’s a gathering time and we all seem to congregate in the kitchen. Lisa Mende designed a breathtaking kitchen for the Savannah Southern Style Now ShowHouse, pg. 22. Claudia Ricciardone designed a chic and livable home that from its inception became a life changing journey. As we gather around the table some of the area’s top celebrity and renowned chefs shared some of their favorite dishes on pg. 64. There are many more heartfelt and inspiring stories in this issue, like Pallet of Dreams and Collage of a Southerner. May this fall be the best fall yet. Cheers!

good reads ITALIAN CHIC
by Daria Reina and Andrea Ferolla Italy is a country synonymous with style and beauty in all aspects of life: the rich history of Rome, Renaissance art of Florence, graceful canals of Venice, high fashion of Milan, signature pasta alla bolognese of Bologna, colorful architecture of Portofino and winking blue waters of Capri and the Amalfi Coast, among many others. Italians themselves live effortlessly amid all this splendor, knowing instinctively just the type of outfit to throw on, design element to balance, or delectable ingredient to add. www.assouline.com
ETERNALLY RITZ, PARIS If ever a place were an incarnation of an ideal, it would be the legendary Ritz Paris on the Place VendĂ´me. Behind the luxury, service, and decor lies the vision of one man: CĂŠsar Ritz, who revolutionized thehotel business to become both an art and an industry. Personally overseeing every detail, sparing no expense on comfort and cuisine, Ritz created in 1898 a mythical hotel, a place where one came to see and be seen, where one felt both at home and transported to another world. In the heart of the City of Light, the Ritz Paris shines, and international luminaries from the worlds of high society, fashion, art, literature, cinema, finance, and diplomacy have illuminated its rooms, from Boni and Anna de Castellane to Barbara Hutton, Princess Grace, and the Duchess of Windsor, from Maria Callas, Coco Chanel, and Ernest Hemingway to Cornelius Vanderbilt, Winston Churchill, Marc Chagall, Marlene Dietrich, and Sir Elton John. www.assouline.com

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LULULEMONS by Lauren Weisberger With her signature wit, Lauren Weisberger offers an alluring look into a sexy, over-the-top world— and proves it’s style and substance together that gets the job done. And it’s nice to see Miranda Priestly emerge again.
THE NIGHTINGGALE by Kristin Hannah With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
FASHION CLIMBING
by Bill Cunningham
Fashion Climbing is the story of a young man striving to be the person he was born to be: a true original. But although he was one of the city’s most recognized and treasured figures, Bill was also one of its most guarded. Written with his infectious joy and one-of-a-kind voice, this memoir was polished, neatly typewritten, and safely stored away in his lifetime. He held off on sharing it--and himself--until his passing. Between these covers, is an education in style, an effervescent tale of a bohemian world as it once was, and a final gift to the readers of one of New York’s great characters.
LOULOU & YVES by Christopher Petkanas Dauntless, “in the bone” style made Loulou de La Falaise one of the great fashion firebrands of the twentieth century. Descending in a direct line from Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, she was celebrated at her death in 2011, aged just sixty-four, as the “highest of haute bohemia,” a feckless adventuress in the art of living―and the one person Yves Saint Laurent could not live without.

had the feeling that someone, someone famous, was about to validate my belief! What funny, personal story would she tell? As I was preparing for a good laugh, she went in a totally different direction. Quick as a whip, she spouted off this fact: “In Mandarin Chinese, they have two words for selfish. One means doing that which is beneficial to you and the other means hoarding, greedy, and cruel. We, in English, have pushed those two words together.” Shocked by the simplicity of her response, the cleverness, and the poignancy, it has stuck with me all these years. Why don’t we in English have a separate word for selfish, specifically used in the context of being beneficial to us? I mean, isn’t it similar to the airplane example we often hear: place the oxygen mask on ourselves first, then place one on our children? Those are specific instructions we’re given each time we take a flight. No one would think we’re selfish for following those directions, they’re considered life saving. In our culture, our language, why is the word selfish
Selfish or Truth and Honesty? I’m selfish, impatient, & a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, & at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best. –Marilyn Monroe

The Spiritual Side to Selfish My guess is, if you read my articles on a regular basis, you are a Seeker of Truth. And with being a Truth Seeker, you already know there are two sides to selfish, no Mandarin Chinese needed. However, we are still human, and with that, it’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking S=selfish is purely “bad.”
How about every once in a while, you fully embrace being the center of the world?
Most fitting quote for today’s TLT post: “Nothing resembles selfishness more closely than self-respect.” ~ George Sand Made me laugh out loud: “Selfishness is a bad habit. That’s why I always rationally think through my decisions to act without regard for others.” ~ Benson Bruno Made me think of myself AND laugh out loud: “I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.” ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground Volume 2, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Feast on the gorgeous photos of the kitchen designed by Charlotte Interior designer Lisa Mende for Southern Style Now ShowHouse in Savannah.
They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. And we have to believe it’s true. Lisa Mende is the founder and creative director of Lisa Mende Design. She has built a reputation as one of the South’s premier luxury designers and is known for creating bold, modern interiors that are rooted in tradition. This Savannah home is a 5,500-square-foot historic Greek Revival home on West Taylor Street, just off Monterey Square. The house features original details including plaster moldings, heart pine floors and marble fireplaces. Lisa started with the bare bones to create this stunning Kitchen. The blue on the original walls became the inspiration for the kitchen. It just happens to be on of Lisa’s favorite colors. Volume 2, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

f Frasier Crane and Julia Sugarbaker created a love child, the result would be Claudia Ricciardone. Just like Sugarbaker, she oozes a genteel
quality. Also, like Sugarbaker, she engages in challenging social and political conversations—especially when it comes to women, children, and environmental issues. At first glance, a breezy blonde-haired, blue-eyed Italian-American donning an exquisite dress might read unapproachable, but folks, she’s just like you and me. Ricciardone shares her successes (like everybody else), but what is totally refreshing is that she also shares her difficulties—like the time she face-planted in a client’s home (twice and on consecutive days). If you spot her in the gluten-free aisle at Whole Foods Market, do say hello. She’s gracious with old-timey manners, but she can laugh at herself too. Ricciardone is also judicious. Accordingly, because she is so discerning, she manages her business quite decisively. As a matter of fact—she has developed a somewhat compulsive attention to detail. Like Dr. Frasier Crane, she excelled in the science of psychology. Through the University of Saint Joseph’s honors program, Ricciardone majored in psychology and double-minored in art history and sociol-
ogy earning magna cum laude distinction. She continued as an honor student and went on to earn a master’s degree at Fairfield University, but she didn’t stop there. While at Fairfield, she also earned a sixth-year degree in school psychology while maintaining an impressive 4.0 grade point average. After college, Ricciardone earned her living as a school psychologist and adjunct professor. Then, like many of us, she chose differently. Ricciardone and husband, Hector Hernandez, wanted a baby. In an unanticipated twist, staying home made sense. Still, she grappled with the realizations that we all struggle with—like the fact that she had to take a leap of faith into the unknown and unpredictable. She enjoyed the safety of a predictive career. Like Frasier, she ruminated fervently. She wrestled with the flawed idea that homemaking meant letting go of intellectual thought and professional relationships forever. Still, she calculated the risks and left her safe-choice career. Today, Ricciardone is the epitome of professionalism. She is a client-pleaser who is delighted to talk shop and share her experiences (good and bad), which is the crux of who she is because she holds nothing back. just settled into a starter home. Unfazed by his wife’s objections, Hernandez persisted. Very soon, Ricciardone found herself engrossed in the building process and working with contractors and her architect. She expresses that the hand of providence moved on her behalf. Luckily, Ricciardone was no stranger to building because she had vast experience specifying finishes for her father’s custom home business during graduate school. After graduation, she continued making design choices for the company while she worked as psychologist. “Design was always my first love, but for practical reasons, I chose a traditional career path,” Ricciardone explains. She chose psychology because she was focused on two goals. First, she desperately wanted to help children. Second, she wanted to be a good daughter. She wanted to assure her parents that she could be independent—it’s an unstable world after all. Nowadays, she gets psyched about helping clients choose finishes that will create a home that the entire family (and pets) can enjoy. In her own home, she has chosen fabrics and furnishings that are stylish and current but that will hold up to her busy daughter. And while she has her favorites, she researches vendors, visits showrooms, and commuWhen it comes to custom de-

Her father instilled a deep respect for the stressors and challenges that these professionals face. “I know how important it is for their projects to stay on schedule,” Ricciardone sympathizes. “I help clients create a plan prior to the start of construction, and because of the processes I’ve incorporated, I know that my projects won’t get delayed by indecision, and that is important to me,” she explains. “You have to create a special design plan, you have to be willing to educate clients about the design process, and you have to be comfortable talking about money,” she stresses. “I can do that for people, and I don’t give everyone the same blue lamp and the same white sofa. I work very hard to pull together rooms that represent my clients.” The cornerstone of Ricciardone’s boutique design firm is sustainability, which she argues is a sound, fiscal approach. “Sustainability is crucial for me--I am uncomfortable with wasting a perfectly good piece of furniture,” she When asked which professionals she liked working with

Connecticut surrounded by traditional design influences where the homes were built in the 1700 and 1800s, and they still have a timeless appeal.” And while she appreciates the clean lines expressed by the Colonial, Georgian, and Greek Revival periods, the top reason she is drawn to the classical styles is the element of timelessness. “As a girl, I spent many summers visiting family in Teggiano, a small Italian town established in the 4th century B.C., and I find that people tend to associate Italian architecture with Tuscany, but Italy’s architecture is diverse,” she explains, “for instance, much of Milan’s architecture is contemporary, even experimental, yet old and new co-exist harmoniously within the city.” Ancient Roman and Renaissance architecture helped her appreciate classical proportions, quality of construction, exquisite craftmanship, and artistic genius. While ancient architecture imprinted her personal taste, her palate eventually evolved, which she thinks happens to a lot of design lovers. Currently, she demands a serene, restful aesthetic. She purposefully adds pops of color, but each pop must flatter rather than grandstand. When designing, or painting, Ricciardone embraces principles like the Golden Ratio and avoids a mash up of trends. “Visually, it’s unpleasant,” she sighs. Rather than chase trends and fads, she relies on quality materials and enduring finishes and furnishings to pull together a space that looks impeccable regardless of the year. The Ricciardone-Hernandez residence reflects her signature style. French blue shutters and window boxes hint at the sanctuary inside. When asked about her personal aesthetic, she clarifies that while her design style leans towards new traditional, she incorporates modern touches (like lamps and custom textiles) to keep a room from feeling stale because, as she explains, “the tension between new and old helps create visual interest.” Ricciardone has a couple of favorite haunts in Charlotte. She expresses avid support for fellow, local creatives like the Flower Diva. She is also fangirling over works she found by Lauren Reddick via Art House Charlotte. A burgeoning painter herself, Ricciardone plans to offer custom art for her clients very soon. Claudia Josephine Design serves the greater Charlotte, N.C. area. Royally Trending: Aquamarine Rings Once we caught a glimpse of Meghan Markle ridding off in her carriage to her wedding reception wearing the late Princess Diana’s aquamarine cocktail ring, we knew we would soon see aqua rings everywhere. From deep blue to the palest of blues, our fascination is a deep one.
The Cocktail Ring How did it ever get that name. The 1920s were a period filled changes. Traditional values were being questioned by the dramatic social and political changes taking place. Frequently referred to as the ‘Roar-ing 20s’ or the ‘Jazz Age’, this was a decade where wom-en worked outside the home and gained the right to vote. There were flamboyant flappers in the underground cock-tail scene, they would don oversized rings to draw atten-tion to the fact that they were sipping illicit alcoholic bever-ages. In this new era of freedom, a bold cocktail ring was also a way for women to flaunt their independence. The cocktail ring is usually worn on the right hand, the ring was blatant-ly not a wedding band and had most likely been bought with a woman’s own money.

tion of the elderberries, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon, the honey needs to be added when it is cooled so that the live enzymes survive. This is what especially makes Sweet’s stand out from the elderberry syrup on market shelves. The honey loses its integrity when the other companies use a “hot pour” to sterilize the bottle. Since Sweet’s does not use that process, Stephanie’s product is ultimately more effective and must be refrigerated. It will be found in the refrigerated aisles in stores. She now has two trained Charlotte chefs whisking up the syrup to help with the demand. Word got out during last winter’s horrible flu epidemic especially after elderberry syrup was recommended nationally on Dr. Oz and Good Morning America. Charlotte stores had waiting lists for her syrup. Stephanie exclaimed she was buying thirteen 50 gallon containers of honey every week to keep up with the orders. Fall 2018 Jewelry Fashion Trends By Susannah Pask
Are you ready for bigger, bolder and flashier than ever this fall? Jewelry seems to have taken on a life of its own on the runway this season. No longer content to play second fiddle to fashion, jewelry takes center stage with in-your-face statement pieces, hark-back-to-the-80’s nostaglia, asymmetrical and miss-matched oversized earrings, super chandeliers, hoops and bracelets and body jewelry that steal the limelight from the clothes. The major fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London and New York are letting the jewelry do all the talking - and make no mistake, it’s shouting out louder than ever.

hristy Kinard’s lively floral paintings characterize her life and observations in the South. Christy thinks of flowers as “songs of the South,”
spreading happiness everywhere they bloom with their rich scents and vibrant colors. another in February that will be a collaboration with her sister, also an artist, Kim Schuessler. Christy and her husband do numerous art shows together, too. Christy spent four years abroad in England renting her own studio in order to immerse herself in international art influences. It was during this time, she ran into London native Jon Davenport. After they got married and Jon moved to the States, Christy inspired and motivated him to become a full-time artist as well. It is evident in his work that he came from the advertising industry, integrating old-fashioned logos such as Coca-Cola into his paintings. You’ll also recognize many faces from Marilyn Monroe to Audrey Hepburn behind the splattered paint. It is amazing how different this talented couple’s work is while still both using mixed media. In her studies and as a child, Christy always admired collage. Robert Rauschenberg was a great inspiration. However, during the four years overseas, Christy visited a London paper shop that changed Christy’s work forever. She had never seen such exquisite paper and knew she needed to add it to her art. Now Christy orders paper from London, collects scrapbook paper, buys patterned fabric,
Shain Gallery of Charlotte has been the home to Kinard originals for 20 years. Sybil Godwin, owner of Shain Gallery, and Christy have a mutual admiration for each other. Kinard paintings don’t last long in the gallery as they are very popular. Sybil explains that Christy’s paintings are for everyone and men are drawn to her work more than any other artist’s floral paintings. They could go in a nursery or in an attorney’s office. Sybil states, “Even my children love her work and if I could put one of her paintings in each room of my house I would.” Shain Gallery hosts two art shows for Christy every year. wanted to “build a universe” where the video would match the shows’ vibes and lighting. For instance, in “Game of Thrones,” members of the House Mertyns have an owl on their coat of arms. Marta stands like royalty in an embroidered forest green cape dress, much like Daenery would wear, with a majestic owl perched on her arm. This video incorporates symbolism and gorgeous artistry that sets it apart from other country music videos of today. The majority of the video is set in a sophisticated, elegant cathedral. The song is about love and cathedrals are a traditional place to be wed. The cathedral is also very reminiscent of a castle much like you would see in “Reign.” In comparison to the fun “All About Us” video, there is a serious tone. The pace of the filming reflects her soothing voice and the calming surroundings. It allows you to take in all the breathtaking details of the costumes and architecture. Marta also makes an unique appearance with a reindeer in the video as she wears her white lace gown. Reindeer are her favorite animal in which she wishes she could own. The reindeer, Oscar, was suggested by the cathedral who knew a reindeer farmer, so she knew it was meant to be. Reindeer can endure harsh and cold surroundings making Volume 2, Issue 6 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Since brunch isn’t complete without a boozy beverage, we opted for their seasonal Summer Affair (Hendricks Gin, St. Germain, Lime, Cucumber and Mint) alongside a crafted mocktail (watermelon, soda water and fresh lime juice) to start. Vivace also offers a bottomless Mimosa and Bloody Mary Bar, which was a very popular choice amongst the crowd.

emerged in a traditional broth that’s intended to dip with a house made crostini. The Insalata and Zuppa collection was straightforward and familiar. We unquestionably gravitated towards the Chopped Caesar and Lobster Bisque, both dreamy staples of elegant European cuisine. The tender salad was quite pleasing, as it was charismatically covered with scratch made dressing, white anchovies and parmesan frico. The bisque was thick and creamy, marrying a silky tomato base with luscious lumps of fresh lobster. For our main entrées, we chose to sample two of Vivace’s house made pasta specialties. Both dishes were exceptionally flavorful comfort food recipes, each surrounded by a rich sea of tomato sauce, fresh parmesan and herbs. Both plates were piping hot, bursting with intense flavors and served in generous portion sizes.

Cool Fall Breeze Vodka Gimlet
Capture the taste of fall in this Vodka Gimlet that’s so delish…. you’ll want to make it all year round. I’ve gently married cool with spice, which highlights the change in seasons and blends them into one delicious crafted cocktail. In my mind, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer and the start of fall. I tend to like my vodka cocktails rugged and slightly tangy, ra-ther than a sweet or fruity finish. I’ve been focusing a little more on herbs these days (which can blend with both ends of the spectrum: from tart to sweet), infusing them into both my home-cooked meals and evening cocktails. The smell of Rosemary has always remind-ed me of this time of year, so naturally I wanted to test it out in drink form. A special thanks to Social House Vodka for allowing me to create this cocktail with their Vodka made in Kinston, North Carolina. I love using local brands and I’m thankful for the opportunity. This vodka has sub-tle layers of vanilla and citrus with a slight kick of black pepper. It’s soft, rich and slightly creamy – balancing the alcohol with moderate acidity.
INGREDIENTS:
This recipe makes 1 cocktail. • 2 oz. Vodka • 1 oz. fresh Lime Juice • 3/4 oz. Simple Syrup • 3 slices of fresh Jalapeño • 2 small sprigs Rosemary • 2 strips of fresh Cucumber • Brown Sugar for rim of glass
DIRECTIONS: Served Up 1.
Add Vodka, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, 1 Jalapeno slice and 1 small sprig of Rosemary and 1 Cucumber strip in a cocktail shaker with ice. Gently shake and strain into the cocktail glass.
2. Garnish with additional Cucumber, remaining Jalapeño slices and Rosemary sprig. Enjoy immediately.
Note: Remove the seeds from the Jalapeño prior to assembling the cocktail. If you are not a fan of very subtle heat, these are not com-pletely necessary. However, the slight heat mixed with the aromatic rosemary and cool cucumber are absolutely delicious and I urge you to try it. If serving over ice, simply pour over ice instead of straining in-to a cocktail glass. Swap Idea: I included Brown Sugar for the rim to keep this festive dur-ing the fall season. Add sea salt for the rim garnish instead of Brown Sugar and taste this cocktail in a whole new way. The salt highlights the flavors in a completely different, equally delicious way.

Need a Go-To Recipe for Pad Thai? How many times have you ordered your favorite dish at a restaurant and it turns out to be… ehh? I mean, it’s still edible but that pizzaz you’re craving seems to be missing (which is why you went out in the first place). Now, I’ll be the first to admit that this recipe is not a traditional version of Pad Thai… and I’m ok with that. I’ve included a base recipe here (for those of you who like to keep things simple) and recommended upgrades for folks who like to live on the wild side. So what exactly gives this Pad Thai that extra oomph you’re looking for? Fresh Herbs. A heaping mound of them will be sufficient. Just when you think you’ve added the perfect amount, go ahead and toss on a handful more. There’s something magical that happens when you combine all these components together onto one plate. Oh, and that lime wedge garnish? Mandatory.
INGREDIENTS: Serves 4ish hungry adults • The Basic Base • 1 (8oz) box of Pad Thai Noodles • 2 Eggs • 3/4 cup Peanuts, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup Cilantro, chopped • 1/2 cup Basil, torn • 1/4 cup Scallions, thinly sliced • Peanut or Avocado Oil, as needed for cooking • Lime Wedges, for garnish • Fresh Jalapeno slices, optional garnish • Sriracha, optional garnish
Optional Upgrades to Base (Recommended) • Firm Tofu, cut into small cubes • Shredded Chicken, I used this crockpot chicken recipe • Red Bell Pepper, thinly sliced or spiralized • Broccoli, cut into small trees • Carrots, shaved into strips • Yellow Onion, thinly sliced or spiralized • Sprouts
The Sauce • 3 Tbsp. Fish Sauce • 2 Tbsp. Lime Juice • 1 Tbsp. Dark Brown Sugar
DIRECTIONS: 1.
Soak noodles according to packaged directions and set aside.
2. If adding recommended vegetables, prep them next. 3. In a medium size bowl, whisk together all sauce ingredients. 4. In a large wok over medium heat, add a dab of olive oil and desired vegetables (+ optional chicken & tofu); stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Note: these items will continue cooking once the noodles are added, so do not overcook them during this step. 5. Drain noodles and add to wok (+ more oil, if needed). Stir Fry for 1 minute and then pour sauce over all ingredients. 6. Cook all ingredients with sauce for 1 – 2 minutes. 7. While the sauce is cooking (thickening) scramble and cook the eggs in a separate small frying pan over medium heat.
• 1 Tbsp. Soy Sauce
8. Add scrambled eggs to wok and gently toss to combine.
• 1 Tbsp. Chili Sauce
9. Top with peanuts, fresh herbs and serve with lime wedges +

In Charlotte, we address two key issues the city is facing:
Economic Mobility We help women who have fallen off the ladder of economic mobility re-gain that access or help women gain access to the ladder for the first time.
Cross-Cultural Reconciliation We build communities where people from different races, socio-economic groups, religions, cultures, and ethnicities work side by side, getting to know and love one another. The women we serve in Charlotte are referred by non-profit community partners. We introduce them to a diverse community where they learn work-readiness skills, receive emotional support and opportunities for spiritual growth. The women served, called Artisans, create an Artisan Empowerment Plan that documents their physical, emotional and spiritual growth dreams for the future. The Plan breaks their dream down into achievable milestones. The Plan begins with 3 basic work readiness milestones: Arriving to work on time, having a good attitude and working diligently at assigned tasks. We connect the Artisans to employment opportunities and other resources in the local community as needed to accomplish dreams and reach the milestones they set in the Artisan Empowerment Plan. We believe that we need to work together to empower the most vulnerable in our communities. No one organization can do everything; we each have a role to play in the lives of the women we serve. We love how the women in our jewelry project communities are all working toward the similar goals of personal and spiritual growth and the ability to care for themselves and their families. The other artisans, volunteers and staff come around each artisan to encourage her to reach for her dreams! And wow, what a privilege it is to see women with tragic pasts achieve goals, large and small, on their path toward a bright future!

fence with a horse is both physical and psychological. A nearly perfect chain of tasks is required to accomplish this. And, explains why riders can earn millions in prize money around the world at top equestrian events. Show jumping is a serious sport. Horseback riding is an isometric exercise. This means it uses specific muscles to stay in certain positions. As a result, postural strength becomes very important. It really works the core muscles that stabilize the abdomen, back and pelvic muscles. It’s not just about the riders strength, but about the

The importance of the horse and rider bond is hard to overstate. It is an extremely dangerous sport as well. Keeping in mind these horses can weigh over 1,000 pounds and any miscalculation from the rider or the horse can result in serious injury. This lends itself to a certain kind of mastery that you cannot find in any other sport. There is no other Olympic sport that has the best diversity among ages, not even golf. T
he “shoulder season” is a delightful time to plan a trip to London. With the
summer tourist rush all but over by October, the city settles back into a charming, but still vibrant, routine. Theater tickets and restaurant reservations are easier to come by, museum lines are manageable, and the changing colors are spectacular at Kew Gardens, where Queen Charlotte’s cottage still stands. The pre-holiday shopping frenzy has not yet begun, and fashion houses and trendy shops welcome browsing. Despite the changeable weather, the city has immense appeal for anyone who doesn’t mind donning a coat and carrying an umbrella -- just in case. Misty days and cooler evenings are every bit as wonderful as the fall sun, and with just an ounce of planning, you will be prepared for all contingencies.

The city on the Thames has been a style-setter long before Mary Quant first took the fashion world by storm in the 1960s with mini-skirts, hot pants and bob haircuts. The iconic and outspoken designer, now in her late 80s, is still a force to be reckoned with on the fashion runway, and younger designers still look to her Mod influence for inspiration. Be cautious with the way you communicate with your peers. You will find yourself in odd situations but remember that these are opportunities to learn and grow. This is a favourable time of romance and bliss if you give proper space to it. Taking time to process new relationships and even new beginnings with oldrelations is the thumb rule. Make sure you give space and energy to your relationship because you may find your mind is more on work just now and it usually doesn’t bode well if you have too much professional commitments on your mind and your partner feels ignored.

( 23 August – 22 September )
This period will give you more personal freedom and allow you to comfortably show a more unique side to your personality. You can look forward to many positive changes in your life. At work you may be offered a new position which leads to a jump up the ladder, or at least a welcome change. You may find yourself more interested in groups and wanting to learn more about subjects of occult sciences, to give you a broader understanding of how life works. You will definitely feel more compassionate and sensitive about those things which affect large numbers of people.
Your energy, charisma and optimism remain high; others are attracted. But effective might be the missing quality, as you will find it hard to advance ongoing ventures, and even harder to successfully start new ones. You must remain conservative and maintain high morals in order to make the most of any offers or lucky streaks. You should really avoid arguments as your thinking is not so spot on. Poor judgement skills mean you need to avoid signing contracts or making important decisions at this time. This is not the time to fall in love.

It’s an ideal time to focus and centre on your own self-worth. There will be fewer obstacles to success. You can be doing everything in your power to initiate positive change. While new ideas are definitely needed now, it will take more than persistence to turn things around in the financial arena. A fresh perspective and new connections can boost your bottom line. Stay open to an innovative approach to keep you from becoming stagnant. This is now the time to make unhindered progress and make your presence felt in the professional world.
Your efforts to expand may meet with some resistance in this period. Communication and creativity go hand in hand to keep existing projects running smoothly. Financial challenges are met with tough negotiation and adjustments are required from everyone on the team. Start to think more out of the box especially when it comes to what you want. You have been in a little rut lately and you have to get yourself out of that. This is not the time to make new commitment in love.
