He has written three books, the first two (The Meaning of Tingo and Toujours Tingo) looking at words that have no equivalent in the English language, and his latest book (The Wonder of Whiffling) looking at unusual words in English. research on the show involved him reading an entire Albanian language dictionary and noting down any words that he found interesting. He formed the idea that there are 27 different words for moustaches and 27 words for eyebrows in Albanian, including, “vetullan” (“very bushy eyebrows”), “vetullor” (“slightly arched eyebrows”) and “vetullosh” (“very thick eyebrows”). After leaving QI, he began to investigate other languages, examining 280 dictionaries and 140 websites. This led to the creation of his first book in 2005, The Meaning of Tingo, a book featuring words which have no equivalent in the English language, “tingo” being a word from the Pascuense language of Easter Island meaning, “to borrow things from a friend’s house, one by one,

As much as I love summer, there is no question that the Carolinas shine when the fall slides into view. Everyone’s back from their summer adventures still looking good and tanned with fresh eyed
excitement. Our mornings are a little chillier and we get to put on that sweater. One thing I always look forward to is the swirl of fashion week. All of a sudden the flip flops are off and you are plunged straight back into the most glamorous of fashions. Our Fashion in Motion takes you around the world one show at a time. While this year we lost two of the most iconic fashion forces Karl Lagerfeld and Gloria Vanderbilt, our Ode to Fashion Icons article by Sharon Jane will share not only what an influence these two had on fashion but on culture as well. They will be forever remembered. I was very lucky to have interviewed Marc-Antoine Coulon who is the world’s leading fashion illustrator and learn about his journey of how he began and of what inspires him. Last and certainly not least is a piece on Kathryn Sargent, who opened the very first gentleman’s tailoring practice to be owned and managed by a women in London’s Mayfair in 2012. “The cut of a gentleman’s suit says more about him then almost anything”. Kathryn states. From decorating with equestrian art to the fashionable world of art and its impact on Asheville, this issue is packed with fashionable reading.

MODERN MANNERS AND

Even the savviest fashionista can never pull off one thing: bad manners. Many fashion show first timers don’t realize the faux pas can be quite nuanced and specific. Here are 10 modern manners to know before you go: 1. PLAN YOUR WARDROBE.

HOW TO RESUSCITATE A BROW OR LASH EMERGENCY AT HOME OR IN THE SALON As women, we are pretty familiar with how to handle skincare 911’s, blunders with our hair, shaving mishaps, and how to correct makeup mistakes. When it comes to brows, this particular part of our face is a bit more mysterious. Many of us grew up simply waxing, tweezing or leaving them au naturel until brows became the hottest “accessory” on our face with a multitude of options of ways to groom and improve upon them. What happens when you face a brow emergency? There is no better expert to turn to for advice than Umbreen Sheikh, a licensed cosmetologist, and founder + CEO of Wink Brow Bar and Salon in New York City.
PROBLEM: OVERPLUCKING YOUR BROWS Almost every woman has gotten too close to that magnifying mirror and been overzealous with a tweezer. Umbreen says, “Don’t fear. You can fake it till you make it with subtle makeup tricks that will help to create the illusion of a fuller, thicker brow. This can be done with Wink’s own Brow Perfecting Quad.” Brush the two powders through, then brush through again to blend for a natural-looking finish. Finally, use a highlighter to camouflage any random hairs. Umbreen says that “Drawing a straight line under your brow will help minimize the appearance of strays. This will also lighten and brighten the entire eye area, drawing more attention to the eyes.”
PROBLEM: CREATING A TOO WIDE EYEBROW GAP The obvious solution to this is to fill in the points closest to the bridge of the nose to lessen the gap. This can be done via microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique used to create the illusion of fuller brows. With this method, Umbreen can create almost any look and shape. First, technicians consult with clients about the best brow shape for their face and choose a color that matches the natural hair color and skin undertone. The brow area is then cleaned and numbed for the treatment. Instead of using a tattoo machine, a handheld tool manually draws hair strokes. This all can take up to 30 to 40 minutes. Results can last anywhere from one to three years, depending on your skin type (the
22
Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com
ink fades faster on oily skin), products, and lifestyle. It’s also an ideal procedure for women who have lost brow volume due to age, menopause or chemotherapy.
PROBLEM: UNRULY BROWS Bold, feathery brows are in, but messy is an adjective you never want to be associated with your arches. “If your brow hairs are “wonky,” you need a game plan for controlling them,” says Umbreen. If your arches do need a trim, Umbreen suggests brushing your brows up towards the top of your ear with a spooly brush and cutting only the tips off the long hairs pointing the scissors down, (not parallel to the brow). "This gives trimmed brows a natural look, because none of the hairs are exactly the same length," As a finishing touch, mist a spoolie with hairspray and brush it through brows—directing the hairs up for a lifted look.
PROBLEM: MATCHING YOUR BROW COLOR TO YOUR HAIR EXACTLY In the case of the hair on your head and your eyebrows, you “don’t want to match the curtains to the carpet,” says Umbreen. Very often, a hair colorist will suggest that you tint your brows much lighter if you are going blonder. Umbreen disagrees with this. “Darker brows will act as a frame for the face and enhance your eye color. Generally, it will give you the appearance of a lot more brow.” If you have gone too light or too dark, “eyebrow tinting is the process of applying semi-permanent dye to enhance, shape, and define your brows. This can be done at salons such as Wink. “It gives the appearance of thicker, more youthful-looking brows,” says Umbreen. An average session takes only about 15 minutes and the color should last anywhere from 3-6 weeks. It’s instant gratification as your new eyebrow color will be immediately apparent.
PROBLEM: PLUCKING BROWS TOO SHORT Eyebrows that are too short can make your eyes and nose look too big. If you have plucked them or waxed them so that you look like you have half an eyebrow, of course, you can spend the time
PROBLEM: YOU’RE SO SQUEAMISH FOR WAXING OR YOU BRUISE EASILY You would be hard-pressed to find a woman who enjoys the tear of a strip of wax against her eyelid to remove tiny eyebrow hairs, but yet we put up with it in the name of beauty. For anyone who has ever deviated from their regular waxer on a vacation or business trip, you have most likely ended up being cut or bruised by overly aggressive waxing. There is a great alternative for everyone called organic threading. As Umbreen explains, “With its origins in Asia centuries ago, eyebrow threading is a simple process that is often considered to be one of the most painless (and least invasive) options for shaping brows. The threading process is simple and typically involves a single piece of cotton thread, After wiping the eyebrow area clean with alcohol, the thread is "twisted and pulled along areas of unwanted hair acting like a mini-lasso, lifting the hair directly from the root without the use of any chemicals or unnecessary tugging on delicate skin. As opposed to waxing, tweezing, or lasers, threading is considered one of the safest and most precise methods of hair removal, especially in the delicate areas surrounding the eye. "Threading allows our specialists to have greater control over which hairs are removed.” The technique is also "100 percent natural," which means there are no artificial waxes, chemicals, or invasive techniques used during the procedure.
PROBLEM: YOU'VE MADE YOUR BROWS TOO BIG AND BOLD Don’t assume you have to wash it all off. Instead, take a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover and carefully trace your brow’s natural outline. Remember, brow product should be applied within the brow’s hairline, not beyond it. Cotton swabs will remove any unwanted shading that has ventured too far outside the lines.

Here’s why …
HELPS WITH EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES. When you spend time doing strength training exercises, your body is more able to handle everyday tasks, like carrying groceries, taking the stairs, getting in and out of the car and even caring for your pets and for your home. Strength training gives you a strong foundation through the core, arms and legs, which will also help you to keep your balance and to walk and move around better for years to come so you can maintain your independence.
REVERSES MUSCLE LOSS AND IMPROVES BONE DENSITY. As we get older, it’s common for people to experience muscle loss starting at around age 50 — something called sarcopenia — which can be made worse by inactivity. In addition to that, you also lose bone density naturally as you age, and this is when falls, fractures and other issues are more likely to occur. The good news is that strength training can help maintain your muscle mass as well as build up your bone density, giving you a better chance of avoiding injuries.
IMPROVES COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR AND MOOD. It’s been shown that exercise can reduce or slow dementia in senior citizens. And people who strength train always enjoy those post-workout feel-good endorphins as well, lowering their risk of depression.
REDUCES RISK OF DISEASE AND ILLNESS. Senior citizens are often more susceptible to chronic diseases like heart disease, arthritis, obesity and even diabetes. Exercise can not only delay and ward off these issues, but it can also help

Up Your Home’s Style I.Q. (Interiors Quotient)

Dear Claudia,
My husband and I just used a designer at a local furniture store to furnish the family room and dining room in our new home. She also assisted with some basic accessorizing. While it looks good, it still doesn’t look finished. We have wood blinds [in the same white as our trim] on our windows. I’m not crazy about our lighting since when we built our home, the builder had us choose from limited options. My husband doesn’t like “clutter,” but our house doesn’t feel like it has any personality. What do you suggest? Thank you! Dee in Charlotte
A
Dear Dee,
Thank you for your question. Although you are off to a good start, it sounds like what your home needs are some finishing touches! Do you remember your wedding day, when you slipped into your dress (or if you were like me, had to have someone hogtie you into it while you prayed the corset wouldn’t bust)? What if your primping had stopped there? Although I’m sure you’re a natural beauty, had you not added carefully applied makeup, your grandmother’s pearls, and the ivory satin heels you picked up for a steal at Nordy’s, your look would have been incomplete.

Decorating your home is very similar to getting ready for your big day—it won’t look quite right if you stop at the basics. You need layers to pull a space together. If you’re a minimalist, it’s even more important that you get these layers right because you won’t be able to distract from mistakes with heavy styling. What are these layers? The two I’m going to suggest you focus on are window treatments and lighting. While wood blinds are functional, they are more utilitarian than decorative. If you want to keep the blinds but up the wow factor, adding drapery panels to both sides of your windows will add a designer layer to your room. Drapery panels will also allow you to bring texture, color, and print (if you’re more adventurous) to your décor, bringing visual interest to the space.
SOME KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER➞ Interior by Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora Interiors | Photography by Colleen Scott
DESIGNER PRO TIPS FOR WINDOW TREATMENTS • If your drapes will not be functional (i.e. open and close), you must still make sure the panels are full enough to look like they are. If you are using ready-made panels, you can use multiple panels on each side. • If possible, your rod should extend across (and beyond) the width of the window, again, to give the appearance of functionality. • Full-length panels should just skim (or hover right above) your floor--your windows shouldn’t look like they are wearing capris. • Panels should be hung high and wide to give your windows a sense of presence. • Because there are many factors to consider when choosing the right window treatments and hardware, using a designer or window treatment specialist can help.

Ok, Dee, let’s move on to your lighting fixtures! From looking at your photos, I agree that there’s room for improvement. This is typical of much builder grade lighting. For example, your chandelier is too small in scale for your room and the brushed chrome finish doesn’t complement your otherwise traditional dining room (or your antique gold wall mirror). Your furniture and art are lovely though, so making some easy lighting changes will have a huge impact. If you want to learn how to “glow up” your lighting, keep reading!
DESIGNER PRO TIPS FOR LIGHTING • Layer your lighting! Good lighting offers huge impact in both functionality and appearance. At a minimum, include a ceiling fixture and table lamps. For added function and drama, add wall sconces, directional light for art installments, floor lamps, and reading lamps. • Recessed lighting (referred to by some builders as “can lighting”) is very popular, but too many “cans” can have your ceiling looking like Swiss cheese. Don’t use recessed lighting in lieu of layered lighting. • To size your chandelier appropriately, add the length and width of a room in feet, then convert to inches. For example, in a 10’ x 12’ room, your light fixture should be approximately 22” wide. I prefer to go bigger rather than smaller, so in this example, if your choice is between a 20” wide chandelier and a 24” chandelier, I’d suggest the 24” fixture. Interior by Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora Interiors | Photography by Colleen Scott
Interior by Beth Kooby Design | Jeff Herr Photography
• When hanging a chandelier, allow enough height for a tall person to walk comfortably underneath without hitting their head (about 7’, depending upon ceiling height). • When hanging a chandelier over a kitchen or dining room table, aim for a height of 66” from the finished floor to the bottom of the fixture. I’ve included some photos of Pinterest-worthy rooms, from traditional to modern, for inspiration so that you can see how great lighting and window treatments can elevate any space. Keep me posted- I’d love to see the after photos! Thanks again, Dee, for your question! Elevating the Arts in Asheville

G
ood art is always in fashion, and Asheville – in addition to its reputation for beautiful scenery, craft beer, and fabulous restaurants – is increasingly establish-
ing itself as an arts destination. Nestled within the Appalachian Mountains in the western part of the state, the small city and its surrounding area is home to a thriving community of artists, galleries, and institutions dedicated to visual arts. Momentum Gallery owner Jordan Ahlers has been a fixture in downtown Asheville’s visual arts scene for the past twenty years. Prior to opening Momentum in October 2017, he spent eighteen years at the helm of one of the region’s largest craft galleries. As chief curator and gallery director, Ahlers led that gallery through a period of significant growth, overseeing operations and responsible for curating its expansive space. In 2017 Ahlers took the leap and opened his own gallery in downtown Asheville. Regarding his newest venture, Momentum Gallery, Ahlers comments,“I wanted to continue to raise the bar for the local art scene and provide a venue that introduces museum-quality work from around the country while simultaneously showcasing the best of this region. We are passionate about elevating the Asheville community as an Arts Destination, propelling our artists’ careers, and promoting their work to national and international audiences.” Momentum Gallery presents a highly-curated collection of some of the finest artwork being made in the country. Ahlers says impeccable craftsmanship plays a role in the works he selects, as the gallery celebrates material-based traditions rich in the area and reflects a contemporary aesthetic in harmony with natural surroundings. Momentum Gallery currently features about forty artists’ work, several of whom Ahlers has worked with for nearly twenty years. “It’s a privilege to have that kind of longevity with an

artist, to witness larger arcs in their career or see a relationship between ideas they’re working through now and something they may have explored a decade or more ago.” Ahlers cites the collection at Momentum is constantly evolving with incoming works, curated exhibitions which typically run for two months, visiting artists, and more. The gallery offers considerable diversity, showing paintings, original prints, sculpture (both wall-mounted and freestanding), and unique studio furniture pieces. Momentum has a modern and contemporary feel – much of the work they show references nature or architecture, but they also have compelling figurative and abstract work, all with the objective to make an impression on their visitors. “We love it when people tell us how amazed they are to find a gallery of this caliber here in North Carolina. We appreciate the opportunity to connect people with artwork that makes them deliriously happy!” Ahlers says the gallery regularly works with homeowners, businesses, designers, and architects to help them find the perfect art for their spaces. Different clients require various levels of assistance. “We’re thrilled when someone walks into our gallery and sees the perfect piece; that’s great! But many of our clients need help in more effectively placing art that they already own, finding a new home for works that no longer fit their tastes, or
searching for a unique piece for that special location.” This approach lets people tap into team Momentum’s skills in designing spaces and in acquiring art on favorable terms. Gallery staff often works initially with clients to help define personal tastes and understand goals, then bring Jordan in to consult as needed. Working independently or in tandem with industry partners, the gallery is able to offer comprehensive art-related services to clients including personal curatorial service, assistance with sourcing and acquiring original work, site-specific commissions, determining focal points and key locations for art, advising on the development of private and corporate collections, delivery, packing, installation, framing, documenting and appraisal of artwork for insurance. The gallery even advises and assists clients on the deaccessioning of unwanted artworks. Ahlers comments, “It’s rewarding to get to know our collectors. People have deeply personal connections with the spaces they live in, so it is an intimate privilege to be invited to work in someone’s home.” Later this year Momentum Gallery will open in their permanent home at 52 Broadway in downtown Asheville. “It is a fan-

tastic historic building with great bones, located on the main north/ south route through downtown.” The new and expanded, two-floor venue quadruples the size of their original bricks and mortar space offering an increased profile among downtown galleries. Momentum is significantly upgrading the 100 year old building with modern amenities affording a setting for the most deluxe art experience in Asheville.“We will have the ability to better showcase our artists’ work, with opportunities for displaying large-format installations, along with smaller works scaled more appropriately for residences.” Ahlers plans to continue to build Momentum’s brand, working with more individuals and design profesVolume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

sionals, as well as creating partnerships with socially-responsible organizations to host events that raise awareness for causes that benefit the community and the planet. He says the gallery intends to offer more educational events, allow additional opportunities for people to connect with artists, and help coordinate events that create and engage arts tourism locally. Ahlers says, “We will continue to bring in more top-tier artists and facilitate access to them and their work to people who live in and visit the region.” Fashion changes with every season and we may watch current trends come and go, but provocative art that feeds the soul is timeless.

had a certain epiphany. These purring mechanical masterpieces are indeed an art form and modality of style.
I woke up the morning of Mille Miglia last May in Modena listening to the low roar of vintage extravagance rolling through town well before my first jolt of espresso. This 1000 mile endurance road race has been a thing since 1927 which runs from Brescia to Rome. Originally a high speed race rivaling what you might encounter at the Nascar Hall of Fame over on East Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Charlotte, a couple of mid-century fatalities caused organizers to rethink the program. These days cities like Modena literally roll out the red carpet through their town’s center for more than 500 beauties to strut their stuff at just a little more than a slow roll. While Mille Miglia is an annual event, Motor Valley celebrates the contributions visionaries such as Enzo Ferrari and Ferrucio Lamborghini have made to culture as a way of life for their com-

According to the Motor Valley Tourist Observatory, “Companies of excellence - like Ferrari, Ducati, Lamborghini, Dallara, Pagani to name just a few - have always been involved in research, technological development and, for some time, in tourism. This is demonstrated by the presence of 15 specialized museums, 16 private collections open to visitors and 4 racetracks for competitions, which have attracted over 1.2 million tourists to the territory. These efforts have resulted in an economic impact of more than €300 million among events in the Imola and Misano circuits and visits to the company museums.* Touring the nurseries of some of these sweet babies, I pictured myself behind the wheel of my favorites.
So many Lambos, so little time. You can walk through the history of these works of art at the Lamborghini Sant’ Agata Museum.
And, just as I couldn’t dream of owning an original da Vinci, the likelihood of one of these pretties calling my garage home proves a bit far-fetched. It would seem though, I have more in common with my Italian counterparts than you might think. Although nearly 60% of Italians own cars as reported on export.gov, you’re as likely to see everyday folk tooling down the autostrada in a Pagani as you would to spot me on the runway for fashion week. This is in part due to the fact that there are only about 100 Paganis on the entire planet. Every single element is Lamborghini rarity at Motor Valley Fest Gala Dinner held at Ducal Palace Military Academy
Inside the pristine Lamborghini factory, my guide pointed to a Huracán where we heard her “cry for the first time” as she came off the assembly line. With a starting sticker of $203, 295, I actually for a moment thought, “What a bargain compared to that ostentatious Aventender way out of reach starting at $421,321.” I further indulged taking a look at some of the upgrades. Who knew I might need the suede-like feel of Alcantara upholstery to avoid sliding around on those tight curves going 217 mph up the
done by hand in a “factory” presenting more the notion of a small batch distillery or sculptor’s studio than an assembly line. Maserati also touts, “Every Maserati is like a work of art constructed with the care and attention that only the human hand can provide.” And while the exclusivity of these cars are a bit broader, the attainability factor doesn’t seem to matter once you’re entranced by their spells. Motor Valley wouldn’t be the mecca it is without its self-described “agitator of men”, Enzo Ferrari. Founded in 1939, Ferrari’s company designed its first car emboldened with that unmis-
Blue Ridge? Up front at the museum I traced the car’s family tree. Spoiler alert–– its roots aren’t in cars at all, but rather tractors. Plenty of Lamborghini tractors can be found in Italy’s breadbasket. In fact, walking the property of my new friend and award-winning Balsamic Vinegar Artisan, Giuseppe Pedroni, I spotted his trusty old Lambo out back in the barn. If you get there, pull up a chair and savor the best in traditional Italian cuisine at his Osteria di Rubbiara. And if you’re really lucky, Mr. Pedroni might drizzle a drop or two of his vinegar on your tortelloni and pair it with the region’s indigenous wine, Lambrusco. To be fair, each of the Motor Valley luxury lines built upon my fond appreciation of artful expressions realized in these cars.

ter’s dog, Enzo, you’ll learn many life lessons. I read Stein’s book prior to my celebration of the Italian way last May. Continuing to resonate with me is something Enzo says, “In racing, they say that your car goes where your eyes go.” The next time you see one of these Italian masterpieces zooming down the road, remember how very important it is for your focus to remain on what is in front of you. And for goodness sake, learn to take life a little slower and savor the moments. Writer’s Note: If a man pulls up in a Pagani to pick me up for a date and doesn’t let me take the wheel, his best bet is to keep on driving past my house. I have a sneaky suspicion all he’d want to talk about is himself and his precious car baby. I could be wrong, though. Perhaps I need to keep my options open? Even at your favorite nail salon, you’ve undoubtedly picked a version of Ferrari Red at some point in time. In case you were wondering, in the CMYK color space, this signature color is composed of 0% cyan, 84.3% magenta, 100% yellow and 0% black. The Museo Enzo Ferrari Modena is paramount when making the connection between art and movement. Not only will you learn of Ferrari’s life by design, but hopefully you’ll gain new perspective of what Leonardo da Vinci expressed so beautifully many moons ago. His attention to lifting two-dimensional figures off the canvas continues to evolve in creative ways. Garth Stein’s 2008 novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, hit the silver screen last month. In Just under one Month’s time the fashion world travels from New York to Europe for the bi-annual fashion events we know and love. It is the renowned fashion week’s celebrated across the globe. Known as the big 4 - New York, London, Milan and Paris. These events have presented us with the creative, innovative, cutting edge and sometimes somewhat bizarre and always beautiful forward thinking fashion since the 1950’s. We take a brief glimpse of the “big 4”……

September 6, 2019 - September 19th, 2019 NEW YORK FASHION WEEK Originally called “Press Week” NYFW was created in 1943 by Eleanor Lambert, who was the press director of the New York Dress Institute. This was the world’s first organized week of fashion. People in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Europe during this time and Press Week offered a desired alternative.

London Fashion week is organized by the British Fashion Council with support from the London Development Agency and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The youngest of the ‘big four” but by no means the least. London Fashion Week always occurs after New York Fashion Week. The first LFW show took place in 1984. Today LFW is attended by more than 5,000 industry guests from over 49 countries.
MFW
September 17th 2019 - September 23th 2019 Milan Fashion Week Next is a quick jaunt to Milan to experience some of the incredibly luxurious Italian designs. MFW was established in 1958 and is dedicated to both women and men’s fashion. MFW presents luxury brands such as Gucci, Prada, Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana to name just a few. The event is partially owned by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. ( The National Chamber of Italian Fashion) Milan hosts more then 40 shows each season and the city is transformed, by creative venues for the shows being selected at the most elegant and influential palaces that become the stage for the designers. Some locations are the Palazzo Reale or the Palazzo Serbelloni.

September 23th 2019 - October 1, 2019 Paris Fashion Week For the grande finale of these fashionable few weeks, we head to the city of lights, Paris for a serving of Haute Couture. Organized by the French Fashion Federation and founded 1973, the very first fashion week event was a fundraiser held at the Palace of Versailles to help restore the palace. It was overseen by the founder of New York Press Week, now known as New York Fashion Week, Eleanor Lambert. Although, the event itself derives from “salon shows” (“défilés de mode” in French, which literally means “fashion parades”) has been taking place for years in Paris couture salons.

Forever Remembered FASHION PIONEERS OF YESTERDAY AND FOREVER By: Sharon Jane | IG: @Sharon.js In the recent passing of Gloria Vanderbilt, I was reminded of the influence in fashion, art and popular culture that fashion designers have as well as the importance of recognizing and remembering how they impacted the world around us. There are three designers that come to mind that have sadly passed away recently, but are held close to heart: Gloria Vanderbilt, Hubert de Givenchy and Karl Lagerfeld. The way that they marked the beginning of trends, redefined ideals, inspired creators, inscribed their dreams in everything they made, and paved a way for new eras that they created with their passion, dedication, and creativity, makes them today’s fashion pioneers, forever remembered.

It’s 1961, Fifth Avenue is empty and New York is still asleep except for this one girl who is wearing a black satin straight dress with an elegant low-cut back, black satin gloves, Oliver Goldsmith tortoiseshell sunglasses, a diamanté hair ornament in her classic bouffant up-do, and a pearl Tiffany’s necklace while standing in front of Tiffany’s, eating a croissant. That girl is Audrey Hepburn in the timeless film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” wearing the iconic dress that was made by the man that redefined modern elegance: Hubert de Givenchy. Known for creating what is known today as the “little black dress,” he came from a heavily artistic family that inspired him to move to Paris at 17 to study

design house in 1952. He stood out by being the youngest designer (at just 25) in the progressive Parisian fashion scene as well as the most innovative among the conservative designers of the time. I believe that when he met his muse, Audrey Hepburn, on the set of Sabrina, it was the beginning of something magical; it was the beginning of a duo made in heaven, one that always inspired each other. Givenchy designed timeless pieces that created an effervescent and romantic atmosphere for every woman that wore his designs. If there was a designer that truly understood the shape and power women have, it was definitely Givenchy. He went on to design for female power figures including Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, the Duchess of Windsor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Empress Farah Pahlavi, Baroness Sylvia de Waldner, Countess Mona Von Bismarck, Diana Vreeland, Countess Cristiana Brandolini D’Asda, Marlene Dietrich, Princess Salimah Aga Khan, and Audrey Hepburn, of course, among many. Women like these defined what a Givenchy woman was and is: one that marks the past, lives in the present, and shapes the future.

KARL LAGERFELD
Lagerfeld is unanimously recognized as one of the greatest pillars of fashion. He was witty, honest, outspoken, a living caricature, the protagonist of his own fantastic fiction who sewed his heart into every garment he made. Karl’s understanding of the magic that comes from the juxtaposition of classic and modern, elegance and youthfulness, timeless and innovation was witnessed under his creative direction. When he took over Chanel, it was almost as if Coco continued to breathe into every garment to shape every leap fashion took. Karl’s vision and passion is what made him and every brand he ever designed for and directed so special. How Chanel and Fendi is seen as today: two prominent hous-

walked into the stylish shop in Mayfair to meet Kathryn Sargent on the first floor of a Georgian house in Brook Street. It had a strong feeling of being both functional yet entic-

I noticed instantly the blend of tradition with the contemporary and I sensed how she exalted her craft with the walnut cabinets placed for the patterns and the hotel foyer desk for the cutting board. All the colours were neutral apart from a shot of the brand’s burgundy and the bright lights, she told me, were a stark contrast to the basements where she had worked.

“The cut of a gentleman’s suit says more about him than almost anything”, she said, and as a tall, confident and naturally welldressed lady herself, she cuts quite a dash. And she also caused quite a stir by entering “where angels fear to tread” when in 2012 she opened the very first gentleman’s tailoring practice to be owned and managed by a woman in London’s Mayfair: the epicentre of the city's tailoring industry, both very much male bastions. and got me commissioned by French Vogue. Since then I have been working for Jean-Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Lancôme, and various magazines among which my beloved “Madame FIGARO”, “Vogue paris”,”Harper’s Bazaar”, “VanityFair”, “Town and Country”, “InStyle magazine”, “Transfuge”...
IF YOU COULD INVITE 5 PEOPLE TO DINNER WHO WOULD YOU INVITE AND WHY AND WHAT THE SETTING BE? I would invite Colette, Madame de Maintenon, Jean Claude Briali – I would love to see the three of them talk together! I could even just sit by their side and listen – I love every novel by Colette. She has been my first literary love. I love her kind of cruel sense of humor, and the way she attached words to common undefinable feelings. Madame de Maintenon was such an exquisite yet strong woman – I feel so much tenderness for her. I would also love to have Flannery O’Connor at my table – her whole work was such a shock to me, I would have loved to discuss some aspects of it with her. I would also love to chat with Federico Fellini or Winston Churchill.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND DRIVES YOUR CREATIVITY, DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? Love and friendship have always been my inner drive. I like what Sagan wrote – “You write for three or four persons you love and who think you are strong – whereas you are vulnerable – they don’t know that they can put you down with one single word. Sometimes it hurts so bad that everything around you starts floating.” When you create, you are always insecure. I have always been drawing to please people. It is a piece of my heart that I want to offer to them – a gift of love; the kind of gift that says “love me back, please.”
HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY OF BECOMING A FASHION ILLUSTRATOR? I first worked for the music and movie industries in my twenties. Then Marpessa Henninck got me published in Italy. Soon after that I was commissioned by a famous French erotic magazine “LUI”. At that time I decided to focus on fashion illustrations – which I had always wanted to do. I worked in Germany and France. I did my first exhibition with Tom Marcireau at the famous Carita beauty salon. Ines de la Fressange noticed me Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

THE INSPIRATION FROM FASHION WEEK MUST BE ELECTRIC, ALTHOUGH IT IS LIMITED IN TIME, SO WHERE IS YOUR INSPIRATION DRAWN FROM THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE YEAR. Everywhere ! Ideas are everywhere - in a novel, in a song, in the shadow of the tree in front of your house, in magazines, in the streets... As for fashion weeks, they are very special - you have to be everywhere at the same time in Paris to attend the shows, and when it’s over you have something like three days to create around 50 images. You have to think quick. It’s kind of my olympic games. In between fashion weeks, you can take your time, you can try things. And there are so many things to be tried !!!
YOU ARE CONSIDERED THE LEADING FASHION ARTISTS OF TODAY, HOW DOES ONE REACT TO SUCH A TITLE? Although I am quite flattered when you tell me so, I would never think of myself in those terms ! It’s really hard to theorize upon my own work. I am working so hard all the time that I actually do not realise what is going on around me. I never look back. I want what’s next. It’s a peculiar balance between fear and desire.
YOUR WORK ENCOMPASSES THE A-LIST FASHION HOUSES AND PEOPLE. IS THERE A CERTAIN CRITERIA YOU LOOK FOR TO FIT INTO YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS? I’ve always done portraits, everywhere, even on vacation that’s my way of bonding, that’s my language. So of course I draw all sorts of people all the time. I don’t think in terms of A-list. Anyone is welcome in my world. Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

PINECREST BED & BREAKFAST by Jessica Bentley
When it comes to planning a perfect escape to the Blue Ridge Mountains, there’s no better place to stay than with Asheville’s Bed & Breakfast Association (ABBA). One of the best perks (in addition to little extras like free Wi-Fi, ample parking, homemade cookies, soothing tea, and beverage service) is the incredible home-cooked feast that’s included with your stay. The attention to detail at this group of B&B’s goes way beyond what’s essential when ensuring that you have a comfortable place to stay. In fact, these innkeepers will go the extra mile by accommodating food allergies, offering advice for local attractions, and helping with whatever you need to fuel your upcoming day. Diane and Dan Rogers are the innkeepers at Pinecrest B&B, located in the historic Montford district of Asheville. This property is situated

on more than an acre of luscious gardens and secluded woods, located just a mile from the heart of scenic downtown Asheville. Their estate offers all the comforts of home along with the convenience to popular travel destinations, hiking trails, famous breweries, art galleries, and shopping.
THE ACCOMODATIONS: This English Tudor style Bed and Breakfast was built in 1905 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. I stayed in their Thomas Wolfe Room, which features a Victorian mahogany queen-sized bed, electric fireplace, on-suite bathroom, freshly picked flowers and a full sitting area where I enjoyed a glass of wine with my late-night cookie. The private bath was spacious and immediately reminded me of an episode of “I Love Lucy”. Lace curtains surrounded the claw-foot soaking tub that was fitted with a vintage style shower head. There were quality toiletries to choose from and luscious Turkish towels I wanted to take home with me.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: I arrived pretty late on the evening of my check-in, so I woke up bright and early the next morning to take a short run around the neighborhood. As I started my trek down the tree-lined streets, I immediately felt a sense of relaxation rush through my blood. This was most likely a side effect of being surrounded by beauVolume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

THE BREAKFAST FEAST: Diane takes great pride in her cooking, and I feel honored to have tried one of her bountiful breakfasts first hand. There’s an enchanting glassed “sleeping porch” located conveniently off the dining room where you can enjoy your breakfast among the towering trees, picturesque gardens, and singing birds.

hen traveling to China, the world’s most populous country
(at over 1.4 billion), it can seem daunting to decide exactly where to go. Combining the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, the most populous city on earth with over 25 million people, with a beach destination like Sanya, located in the south of the country on the island of Hainan, is an ideal introduction, especially for first-time visitors. Staying at the newly opened EDITION properties, adds a level of luxury and tranquility to the trip that travelers will appreciate. The EDITION brand is the brainchild of Ian Schrager (the creator of Studio 54) –it was launched with great success and has expanded to Miami, Barcelona, London, Bodrum and other locales, with the China properties the newest in the portfolio. Start your China sojourn in Shanghai—where the energy of this bustling metropolis is a blanket of non-stop activity—before heading to the calm of Sanya, known as the Hawaii of China.

little bistros, noodle shops and wine bars in this area, so it’s a good place to spend an afternoon. Perhaps the best evening activity in Shanghai is walking along the Bund, the waterfront area, taking in the modern skyscrapers along the Pudong District and comparing it against the historic colonial buildings on the International Settlement, on other side of the river. An evening boat ride along the Huangpu River is also a great option.
What to do in Shanghai
A must is a visit to Yu Garden, located in the old part of Shanghai. Built in 1559, this expansive spot has Ming Dynasty pavilions, beautiful expansive gardens, arched walkways and a dragon wall enclosure. Be sure to get there early to beat the crowds and definitely book a guide to get the full history of the gardens. The next stop should be to the Shanghai Towers—it, alongside neighboring World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower—make up the famous Pudong skyline. Shanghai Towers, at 128 floors, is one of the tallest buildings on earth with one of the fastest elevators in the world. What makes a visit here so worth it, is that on a clear day, travelers can see just how sprawling the city of Shanghai is. Plus, you’ll get an amazing view of the snaking Huangpu River.
After spending the day taking in the sights, coming home to the EDITION Shanghai, in a prime location five minutes away from the Bund along the famous Nanjing Road East Boulevard, is the ideal respite. The hotel has a funky, hip vibe and photos of the interior are Instagram-worthy. A must is drinks at the Sky Bar where one of the best views of the Pudong skyline can be had—it’s especially amazing at night when the city lights up in purples, pinks and red. The skyline of Shanghai, along with the boats meandering on the Huangpu River, is one of the most memorable take-aways of the trip. The bar is extremely popular—with hotel guests, locals and travelers staying at other properties—so be sure to reserve a table. The hotels many restaurants are all worth a meal. Shanghai Tavern has an international menu and is known for their extensive buffet breakfast. HIYA, serving up Japanese and Asian-fusion, is under the direction of Jason Atherton, the Michelin-starred London-based restaurateur. Canton Disco is a typical Cantonese specialty restaurant and is good for groups. Be sure to hit the hotel’s pool, which includes a lap pool and Jacuzzi, before taking in the spa located on floor 6. The spa has

an extensive menu of body treatments and facials. What the Shanghai Edition does so well is combining modern with historical. The original building dates back a hundred years, but the inside is wholly modern.
Many people who come to Sanya spend most of their time at the resort—in addition to the many pools, restaurants, and expansive man-made lagoon which has stand up paddle board and kayaks—the resort has a substantial kids’ area including a kid’s camp, ice cream truck, bumper cars and a mini water park. Snorkelers and surfers can bike or book a car to the nearby fishing village, where one of the best surfing and snorkeling spots in all of China can be found. We were surprised to find the water a beautiful turquoise color, not unlike that found in the Caribbean. After spending several days in Shanghai, leave the bustling international city behind and head to Sanya, on the island of Hainan, where the Sanya EDITION resides. Chinese people from all over the country come to Sanya for a beach holidays as it’s one of the few beach destinations in all of China. The Sanya EDITION, located on the South China Sea, is a sprawling tropical resort with several pools and a man-made lagoon that pumps in ocean water. The beach is clean and ideal for sunrise and sunset walks. The pool with the best view is the Sky Deck Pool—which overlooks the resort and beach and is a great place to have cocktails or afternoon tea. The resort has a diverse array of restaurants. Xian Hai has typical Cantonese fare in an upscale setting. Barbacoa restaurant is the most popular—it serves up Indonesian fusion on the beach and has live nightly music. The Jade Egret, the international restaurant, has delicious Wagyu beef flown in from Australia. The Market, is for casual dining and it has one of the most extensive breakfast buffets—with a noodle station, an omelet station and more than 50 choices of hot and cold dishes. And it’s all about the aristocratic villas and hotels and their elegant gardens. Each of you will have your favourite. Posh Milanese families vie for grandeur and style on this lake rather like New Yorkers with the Hamptons. The hotels and villas have different colours and shapes. There are yellows and greens with canopies and umbrellas or muted pink and terracotta with grey shutters. And their wonderful proportions blend into a pleasing harmonious row. It’s almost as though sometimes they are in communion with each other across the water. I certainly felt that with the hotels of Tremezzo and Serbelloni and their respective villas of Carlotta and Melzi.
Lake Como is pretty much unanimously considered the most beautiful of the Italian Lakes. Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore may be bigger but Lake Como is surely the most impressive. It’s the deepest lake in Europe and is an enchanting and truly restorative

I stayed next at the wonderful Villa Camilla, the old family home of the Marchesi di Rozzano. The villa looks across the three parts of Lake Como and the beautiful mountains above and beyond. On arrival I went upstairs, up the polished floors creak wonderfully all the way up the sweeping staircase. It was like a museum and I was dying to explore every nook and cranny. Along its walls are hung a catalogue of horse paintings strongly hinting at the family passion. The bathrooms are an array of vibrant and surprising colours to counteract their sober and traditional adjoining bedrooms. The house is neo-classical in style while the garden, apart from a classically Italian lake terrace with lily pool and statuary, is designed in the romantic English style that invaded Italy at the time. I stayed in Bellagio at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. And very spoiling it was at breakfast to look up at the coffered ceiling, the frescoes and chandeliers of the ballroom where I ate. The walls were all soft corals and pinks, pale greens and lilac grey with white and gold, with the light from the seven large windows reflected by mirrors everywhere. HORSE ART AVAILABLE FOR ALL TASTES AND BUDGETS Equestrian art can be used for investment purposes or just to decorate the home. Whether you are an equestrian yourself or simply appreciate the power and beauty behind the animal, horse art may be perfect for you. You can turn to historic work by late, famous artists if you are looking for timeless pieces. However, you must take precautions and ensure the artwork is still in tact. It is possible that overtime historic paintings have been over cleaned and were repaired with new paint. If you are looking to add a historical equestrian painting to your home, be sure it still maintains its original glory and will last in your home for years to come. Another viable option for answering the equestrian art home decor trend is turning to new artists who are passionate equestrians themselves. Artists such as Tammy Tappan have a long term love affair with the animal. Tammy’s passion is evident in each stroke of her painting and meticulous carving in her sculp

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH
BRUSCHETTA
94
Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com
As soon as the weather turns, I fall head-over-heels for various root vegetables, squash, and pumpkins. This appetizer is a sweet and savory delight that will win over a crowd at your next gathering. Butternut Squash is one of the most common variations of winter squash. You can find it at every grocery store and most farmer’s markets. The base for this appetizer is my Almond Pesto. I simply love the bright green color of the pesto combined with the deep yellow flesh of the Butternut Squash. Make sure to head on over to my blog to grab that recipe, www.sliceofjess.com!
INGREDIENTS: • 1 Butternut Squash, cubed & roasted
• 2-3 fresh Sage Leaves, minced
• 1 French Baguette, thinly sliced & toasted
• Olive Oil, as needed
• Almond Pesto, as needed
• Red Pepper Flakes, to taste
• 3-4 ounces Feta Cheese, crumbled
• Salt + Pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS: 1.
Slice the baguette into smaller bite size portions. Slice at an angle to create more surface area on each slice.
2. Brush both sides of the bread with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in a 450 degrees oven for 10 minutes or until edges are golden in color. Once toasted, remove from oven and set aside. 3. Slice the uncooked butternut squash in half and remove the seeds. Start slicing the inside flesh into small cubes, around the size of a bouillon cube. Place your cubes in a mixing bowl. Make sure to cut off all the skin portions and discard. 4. Once the squash is cubed, toss with a small amount of olive oil, salt, and pepper. 5.
On an oiled baking sheet, roast the squash cubes in a 450F oven for 15 minutes, turning once halfway through. Your squash should be browned, soft in the center, and have a slight crunch to the outside.
6. Now you just need to assemble the bruschetta. First place down the toasted baguette slices and spread a small amount of almond pesto on each piece. Then layer with the squash, feta, and sprinkle with sage and red pepper flakes. Serve immediately. RECIPE NOTE: You can purchase squash already cubed at the grocery store. This is a great way to save some time on prep. Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

GOLF COURSES
WORTH TRAVELING TO We all have our go-to courses in the communities where we live, the ones we belong to as members or the public courses that we regularly make tee times at. And while we all love, appreciate and keep coming back to our favorite local courses, there’s also nothing quite like the fun of planning a golf trip and experiencing a new golf course. We’re lucky that we live in a country that has no shortage of luxury golf courses, many of which offer once-in-a-lifetime playing experiences. So what luxury golf courses should you put on your bucket list? Here’s a look at six golf courses that are most definitely worth traveling across the country for:
Luxury Golf Courses Worth Traveling To
From sea to shining sea, here’s a look at some luxury golf courses to work into your next trip itinerary:
CYPRESS POINT CLUB (PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA): Jagged coastline, challenging bunkers and spectacular views all around. These features — and more — describe Cypress Point Club, an amazing course carved out of the bordering terrain of the Pacific Ocean. What’s nice about Cypress Point is that you don’t need to be a pro to score well on it. It features several manageable holes, so even the weekend golf warrior can play to their handicap on it. OAKMONT COUNTRY CLUB (OAKMONT, PENNSYLVANIA): If you’re looking to play a luxury golf course that’s sure to challenge you — both physically and mentally — we’d suggest heading east to Oakmont, Pennsylvania, where the Oakmont Country Club poses a stiff challenge to even professional-level talents (the course hosted the 2016 U.S. Open, of which only four golfers finished under par for the tournament). The course features a plethora of deep bunkers, narrow fairways and deep rough. But amid its challenges, it’s one of the most beautiful courses in the country.

PINEHURST (PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA): Pinehurst is one of the oldest courses in America, having been played by golfers since 1895. The course consists of numerous courses, each of which offers golfers a different experience. In fact, the resort is home to nine total courses, but by far the most popular is Course No. 2. The course will host this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship and the 2024 U.S. Open. WHISTLING STRAITS (NEW HAVEN, WISCONSIN): Over 1,000 bunkers don this lakeside course, which once served as an army base. The fairways are rugged, the greens roll fast and the hills and Lake Michigan sights are something to behold. For a real experience, consider playing this course in the evening, when you can catch the sun setting over Lake Michigan. SHADOW CREEK (LAS VEGAS, NEVADA): The dry, desert area of Las Vegas isn’t typically known for being green. But you’ll be amazed at the beauty of Shadow Creek, which sits in the foothills of the Red Rock Mountains. One of the most expensive to build golf courses in the country, the terrain required a complete reworking to create the 18 holes that sit there today. Rolling hills and canyons were crafted on an otherwise flat desert terrain, and you can’t beat the mountain views that this bucket list course has to offer. PRIMLAND GOLF COURSE (MEADOWS OF DAN, VIRGINIA): This course might be the closest you get to playing the Scotish highlands. With mountain views at every turn and beautiful, natural hills, Primland isn’t just breathtaking — but it’s playable to all different skill levels of golfers to. And while it’s beauty and location makes it a bucket list course, many golfers seek out Primland time and time again for a memorable round. Volume 3, Issue 5 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

about town asheville Capella on 9 Maker’s Mark Launch Party Guests of the Capella on 9 Maker’s Mark Launch Party enjoyed a sun-soaked evening on the ninth floor of AC Hotel Asheville. A variety of Maker’s Mark concoctions were offered including neat tastings, a salted caramel Maker’s Mark float, and of course, Capella on 9’s Ole #4 Old Fashioned containing their private select whiskey (Come belly up to our bar and give it a try!). To fill their bellies, attendees enjoyed seared scallops, pork tenderloin, sliders, wings, and cucumber canapés. And what’s a party without music? Oil and Water Band provided the tunes for the evening. A highlight of the evening was the Maker’s Mark photo-in-a-bottle wax dipping station—the perfect take-home memento!
